Trash - How long to empty?

I wasn't sure where to log this inquiry and I hope this category will work. I dumped a few old libraries that I no longer needed on my system drive. As a result there are about 280K files to delete. The system has been processing about 200 per hour. Is this a normal pace?

Thanks David Shanahan that certainly fixed the issue. It deleted the folder in about 10 minutes. It was running all night and day...until now.
Thanks again, I learned something today.

That's not how it works. Once a device (including a computer) is associated with an Apple ID it cannot be switched for 90 days. See this Apple KB article for more information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420.

  • How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put things in the Trash? Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash.

How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put items in the Trash?  Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash. I have a MacBook OS X 10.5.8

The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".

  • How do you empty the trash in the Classic Environment?

There was a large file on my desktop, called ".tif" (no filename, just ".tif" and nothing else). It was apparently created by the VueScan scanning software. It was not an image I asked it to scan, it's just some sort of test image. It only appears to applications running in Classic. It does not appear to OSX applications, and the Find command in the OSX Finder can't find it.
Using Sherlock 2, running under Classic, I was able to find this file, but the only thing I could do with it in Sherlock 2 was move it to the Trash. So now, it's sitting in the Trash of the Classic environment, but OSX doesn't see it, the Trash in OSX is empty.
There is no "Empty Trash" command in Sherlock 2, or any other Classic program that I have. All of the third-party utility programs that I have for OS 9, such as Norton Utilities, DiskWarrior, etc., won't run under Classic. When I try to run them, I simply get a message, "That application is not supported by Classic."
So, how can I get rid of this file? It is only visible to the Classic environment. Are there any utility programs that run under Classic that can cause the Classic environment Trash to be emptied?
    Thank you

Hi, Bob. I have no way to replicate your problem and test this suggestion on my Mac, but I'm confident that it will work. Download File Buddy 8 and use its Find command to search for a file whose name is .tif, including both visible and invisible files in the search. (The "." at the start of the file's name makes it invisible in OS X). Once you find it, select it in File Buddy's hit list — make very sure you're selecting the right file and only that file — and use the Delete command in FB's File menu — not the Trash button in FB's toolbar. "Delete" will remove the file instantly and irrevocably, no matter where it resides, ignoring the usual rigmarole associated with the Trash.
File Buddy is to the Finder what Photoshop is to QuickTime PictureViewer, or Word is to SimpleText. Anything FB can't do to or with your files (and much of what it can), you should be scared of doing. But when you need it, there's no substitute.

Usually rebooting clears it so you can empty the trash, otherwise:

  • How do I empty trash after deleting music, apps and photos from my iPhone to make more room for upgrading to iOS 8.1?

How do I empty trash after deleting music, apps and photos from my iPhone to make more room for upgrading to iOS 8.1?  It says I don't have enough room to upgrade so I have deleted some of everything but do not see an improvement in my storage space. Help?

    No need to empty anything.
You can update by connecting your phone to iTunes on your computer. This way you bypass the space limitations.

  • How will i empty my trash that is "in use"?

When I try to empty my trash it says "this operation could not be completed because the item ...... is in use". How will i empty my trash?

Quit the application associated with the item in the trash before you empty the trash.
If that doesn't help, hold down the Option key and empty the trash at the same time.

  • Why does trash take so long to empty?

I had some stuff in my trash to empty today. About 2 gigs. It's been emptying for over 2 hours!? What's going on with Leopard? I have had this before. I am not trying the secure empty feature. Thanks
    Cheers

if some stuff takes so long to empty here is a small trick. collect all the items in a folder that you want to trash on your desktop. open terminal application in utilities folder. type
    cd Desktop
for changing directory to your Desktop. then type the following without brackets.
rm -rf (name of the folder)
the folder will be deleted immedeately.

  • No longer asks if I want to delete photos on camera. I cannot move photos to trash. how do I delete them?

no longer asks if I want to delete photos on camera. I cannot move photos to trash. how do I delete them?

it is rrecommended that you never have iPhoto delete your photos - import them and be sure they are safely in iPhoto and then after one (or more) backup cycles use the camera's format command to reformat the memorycard and delete the photos
As to the lack of being ask
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
