Trash is stuck in "perpetual empty" cycle

My trash can is stuck in a perpetual "empty" cycle so that anything I place in the trash is immediately deleted. How do I reset it so that I have to empty the trash manually?

1. Minimize all open windows/apps, or just click on any free space on your desktop.
2. Click Finder (in the menu bar, at the top) > Preferences... > Advanced tab
3. Uncheck "Empty Trash Securely"
4. Check "Show Warning before Emptying Trash"
Et voila!
After that, if you use Finder to emtpy your Trash, you'll be given options for both.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Assuming yo mean the Mil trash folder, go to Settings>Mail the account and delete the account fro the iPod and reenter the accont settings.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Strange file in trash and it won't empty

I have a strange file in trash and it will not empty.
There is an alias file that has a strange name and a date of dec. 31, 1903. It will not go away when I empty. I put other files in the trash to see if they would be deleted and they do, but the other will not be deleted.
In the name of the file there is small characters that say "null" then õ's as well.
I took a few screen shots and posted them on photobucket, Take a look. Any suggestions or theories?

On the Mac there are actually multiple Trashes. The user Trash ".Trash" in user's home folder, and multiple (depending on number of volumes in machine) ".Trashes" folder(s) one each in root of volume. In the ".Trashes" folder there can be a trash folder for the user.
It looks like you have a corrupted/illegal character file which you can't delete via the UI. Via the terminal you may be able to. But... you have to go to the "trash" where the file actually is - and it may not be in "~/.Trash". But in the Mac desktop you will see it in your Trash icon.
Have a look at my post here

and the rest of the thread.
Get into Terminal and check your home trash folder, see if the file is there then go to the other trash folders ".Trashes" and look for it there and kill it with "sudo" command as shown in my other post here.

  • Ipod 3g stuck in perpetual restore mode.

While updating my ipod 3g - as prompted to do by Apple - my ipod became stuck in perpetual restore mode. I dont care about losing data but it wont restore. I get a message that I need to restore and then click ok adn get a message to restore and update. After 29 minutes the updated software is downloaded but the ipod does not restore it just goes through the same motions over and over. (Like a twilight Zone Episode) - Now I would say that Apple broke my ipod with their update, shouldnt apple fix it?? Do they? - I see many fixes on the net that require some stuff to be downloaded on my computer but dont feel comfortable doing that.

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.

how exactly did you manage that? did you do it from terminal. or did you manage to do it from finder somehow?

this most likely means that a new .trash folder was created. either way, log out/in and trash the Trash folder normally (just drag it to Trash). you should be able to do it.

  • The trash file in my email empties by itself every few days. how do i set it so that the emptiing of the trash is left up to me?

the trash file in my email empties by itself every 3 or 4 days. How can i empty if myself manually?

I too have this problem. I just transfered my entire library to an external drive it worked great for a couple of days until I accidently opened itunes without holding down the option key. Now iTunes can't find any of my tunes even though I choose the library on the external drive.
I have tried throwing away the itunes library on my harddrive and then reopening itunes with the option key and selecting the library on my external drive. This did not work.
I can't believe apple didn't think this through. There must be away for it to figure out where my music is!

Usually rebooting clears it so you can empty the trash, otherwise:

One thing to try: Hold down option key, then press and hold Finder icon in dock. Select "Relaunch".

  • Trash won't open or empty through dock

As the topic says, my trash won't open or empty using the right-click menu in the dock. However, it will if I use the finder menu option, and the dock icon will update iteself. (Mac OS 10.7.1)
I can't think of anything short of an OS bug or a messed up process. Logging out, restarting...the issue always comes back AFTER A WHILE.
    Any ideas?

  • Updated iOS, now stuck in a perpetual restore cycle.

So I start up iTunes this morning to update my podcasts. I update and i connect my iPod to sync them. It says I have an update for the iOS. So I go through the process and let it reboot. Now I have been in a seemingly neverending cycle of attempting to restore, getting a "Preparing iPod for restore" on Windows iTunes, and eventually getting an error window with a 1604 error code. Nothing seems to fix the issue. If anyone can't give me a fix, looks like I will have to venture to the Apple Store tomorrow. *sigh* Great work idiots at Apple!

    Error 1604 is covered here:
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
But the restore loop is also pointing into this direction:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes): This issue is typically caused by out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software. Please followTroubleshooting security software issues if USB troubleshooting does not resolve this issue.

  • IPhoto Trash can is not getting empty.

I am trying to use iPhoto trash can method.  just click on emtpy trash can.  But it is not working. Recently, I cleaned up my library, and deleted about 13k photos.  When I click empty, shows status bar, and it appears stucked.  I need to force out iPhoto to realize, after restarting it again, that about 100 photos are deleted in about one hour.
I have tried the sudo rm -R methods but they work only for the system trash can.  Is there any command line I can use to empty really fast the iPhoto one?  There is a lot of wasted space and I have no idea how to recover it.
    Thank you.

IPhoto can not empty that large a trash
Open the trash and select all. Make a album with them, right click on the photos selected in the trash and return to the library. Then using the album delete in batches of 100 or so emptying the iPhoto trash for each batch

  • Safari gets stuck loading pages and cycles indefinitely

I am new to Macs. I am using Safari to trade stocks and many of the pages I use must be refreshed every few minutes. These pages are located in etrade.com, ameritrade.com, google finance and yahoo finance. At any single point, I may have up to ten or so tabs open in my window and refresh each as I need. However, Safari will have a tough time refreshing the pages most of the time and will get through about half of one, then get stuck and start cycling indefinitely. At that point, I need to stop loading, reload/refresh the page a couple more times, each time Safari getting further along and getting stuck again, until the page properly refreshes completely. I understand that I am using a lot of pages at once. But that should be no problem and should have no affect on the browser and other pages. I have a 2.93 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD hard drive. The computer has no software on it so far. No music, nothing so far. I've never had this problem with Mozilla or Explorer on PCs. Even this Apple page had to be reloaded, now that the problem has spread to all pages I browse online. I have no other problems with the notebook. Does anyone know what's going on with my browser and do I need a software update or need to get the computer flushed and everything reinstalled? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to the forums!
    Try this:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Two issues on Aperture: single photo won't show in viewer, emptied trash won't indicate as empty

Using Version 3.5.1. Several after-market edit plug-ins attached. Two new problems:
Very recently, when editing, the single photo viewer mode will start showing only black (blank), or shows the photo very briefly then goes black, or shows another different photo, or a damaged-looking photo. Multiple photo viewer modes still work ok. Problem goes away upon quitting and restarting Aperture, but then shortly soonafter recurs while editing.
Also, trash continually indicates 477 undeleted photos even after emptying. Additional photos added to trash get added to this count (i.e. it then indicates, say, 492 photos in trash, while showing only the actual 15 legitimate files in the trash folder), and then can successfully deleted the actual trashed files back to the mysterious 477, although with no photos actually left in the trash folder and the Empty Trash function still active for these 477 ghost files. This problem persists despite restarting.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

First of all, make sure you have a current, working backup of your Aperture library.
Is your Aperture library on your system drive or on an external drive? If external drive, how is the library connected? And is the library referenced or managed?
    Several after-market edit plug-ins attached.
Have you checked, if your plug-ins are the latest versions, and compatible with MacOS X Mavericks?
What trouble-shooting measures have you already tried? If you have not already done so, use the Aperture Library First Aid tools and repair the permissions and the database, see this page of the Aperture User Manual:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Accidentally moved backups.backupdb to trash, now stuck badly. NEED HELP!

    Hi everyone,
I recently bought a new macbook pro to replace my much older, aging one. I was nearing the end of migrating everything over and needed to reformat my TIme Machine drive to allow a new backup file to start on my new computer. So, hooking up my portable harddrive to my computer, I moved the backups.backupdb folder to the finder trash and tried to delete. Realizing it won't delete I tried to move it back to the drive but it started copying instead. Now realizing I'm in trouble I went on here to try and find an answer. I did that whole process of,
    cd /volumes/"Time Machine"/
    sudo -rm .Trashes
in Terminal, and let it work for a couple hours, only to cancel b/c it didn't appear to be working. Now I don't care at all about the files on the time machine drive, I just want them gone from the drive AND the files gone from my finder trash. I then went into disk utility and went through the process of erasing the drive. I let it sit over night, hoping that when I woke up, the drive would be empty. Unfortunately, it's been at the "unmounting disk" step all night.
I am in some serious need of help guys, I have no idea what to do.
