Trash not empting

My trash is not emptying under secure empty or empty trash. it is just running and running. I can't force quit and I can't restart computer. I am not sure if I should just shut it down? I can't even open the trash. I am running Mac OSX 10.7.5 Forgot to say that Emptying trash is still running for over 2 hours and won't stop the progress line has not moved..

Hey sj0815,
If you're still experiencing issues emptying your trash, I'd try out some of the following solutions:
Solution
Try these steps to empty the Trash:
Hold down the Option key while emptying the Trash.
Start up the computer with extensions off and empty the Trash.
Start up the computer from the Mac OS disc and empty the Trash.
Verify and repair the disk with Disk First Aid or other appropriate repair utility.
If the file is locked, hold down the Option key while choosing Empty Trash from the Special menu. If it is a hard disk error, it is important to repair the issue since it may become worse and other files may be damaged or lost.
To repair the hard disk's directory structure, start up the computer from the Mac OS disc and verify or repair the hard disk with Disk First Aid. If Disk First Aid finds an error but is unable to repair it, consider backing up the hard disk and reinitializing it with Drive Setup or other appropriate utility.
There is one more technique you can try, but depending on the cause of the issue, it may not work. If the following steps don't help, or if the issue reappears, you should initialize the hard disk to completely correct the issue.
The following file and folder names are not important, just the concept.
1. Create a folder on the desktop called Test.
2. Drag the file in question from the Trash to the Test folder.
3. Open the application program used to create the file. (If you do not have the original application, use SimpleText.)
4. Create a new file, and save it to the desktop with the same name as the problematic file.
5. Drag the file you just saved from the desktop to the Test folder. You are prompted to replace the file. Replace it. This should eliminate the file.
If this technique does not work, and emptying the Trash still does not erase the file, back up hard disk and reinitialize it using Drive Setup or other appropriate disk formatting utility.

Application "FINDER"not responding,Desktop files disappeared & " also "Trash" not working svn after relaunching several times.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Why does the trash not fully empty?

Why does the trash not fully empty?

    try this:
in the finder, choose empty trash from the finder menu while holding the option key.
if that doesn't work, see this article on how to resolve Trash Problems.

  • Trash not supported? What does that mean...?

Trash not supported? What does that mean...?

When you trash something from within FCPX -- it is completely deleted (from Events or Projects); it is not sent to the system trash - there will be nothing to recover if you make a mistake. If you archived your sources outside of an Event, the originals *will not* be deleted. Do not delete an Event that contains original source media unless you are sure! You will lose it.

  • Aperture trash not emptying into Finder Trash

I'm new to Aperture but am seeing some behaviour when deleting images / projects / folders that I am suprosed by.
When I move Aperture items to the Aperture trash folder and then empty the Aperture trash folder, they are removed as you would expect from there BUT don't appear in the Finder trash?

    Hello Jared,
That problem is quite often caused by the System Trash not being writable: Have a look at this help text, and see, if  any of the solutions apply to your situation:
    Solving Trash Problems
Where is your library located, on your system volume or on an external volume? If the library  is on an external volume, you need to check the permissions on the volume's trash bin, else the trash bin in your home folder.
And can you please post more information on the MacOS you are using and your Aperture Version?

  • Deleted messages (in Trash) not showing "from" & "subject" in list - IMAP

I have searched high and low for this issue but cannot solve it. It is easily reproducible and occurs on two Intel Macs I have, both running Leopard 10.5.5 and Mail 3.5, both w/ IMAP on two separate gmail accounts.
Basically, when I delete a message from the inbox, it goes to the trash, but when I click on the trash icon, the message is there but it is without the "From" and "Subject" fields. It is not 100% of the time, but sometimes more often than not. It is as if Mail can't get the right header info from Gmail. Restarting, restarting mail, etc. doesn't work. Reindexing did get the messages fixed but then new messages just repeat the same problem. Any suggestions?
If I were to double click on one of these messages (bringing it up in its own window) it would show all of the relevant info. However, if I reply to a message from the list view, it doesn't populate the From or Subject field. Its as if it doesn't read the data.
Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone seen this before?
    Thanks,

I'm seeing something similar, yes. Sometimes the headers in the message list of one of my IMAP mailboxes are missing. The header info is displayed correctly in the body panel, just not in the list panel. This makes me think it's not a problem with the IMAP file, but something locally. I've rebuilt the mailbox (1000+ messages). This resolves it but the problem then reappears at some point later.
It only seems to happen in this one mailbox for me.

  • Trash not working correctly

I do not have the finder options "Empty Trash" or "Secure Empty Trash". Everything I delete is emptied immediately. I do not have the finder option "Empty Trash Securely" checked. Can anyone help me with this issue?

Select the icon of your home folder (a house with your name) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open the Info dialog.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?

  • 2 photos indicated in trash not there

I have 2 photos indicated in trash inside icon parenthesis (i.e. (2) ) but there are no photos in my trash. I have emptied iPhoto trash.
How do I delete the (2) indicated?
    Thanks.

Yes but I don't think that would be relevant in this case.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Help to restore iTunes files from trash, not deleted.

I need to move 35,000 podcasts, 654 GB, from my trash back to my iTunes library on an external hard drive (EHD). They are NOT deleted from my trash.
I am running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 until I can clear enough EHD space to backup/upgrade to Mtn Lion.
11.5 iTunes is my current version on my 640 GB early 2009 24” mac.
    I have tried:
    Undo - command + Z
Selecting all in trash and dragging it to the:
iTunes Music folder on my EHD
Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD
The upper left corner on the iTunes window
The iTunes icon in the dock
There is no restore option when I Right Click on anything in trash, single or more than one file.
In iTunes: File, Add to Library, selecting the recycle bin or the file under it. Nothing happens. I do have checked on iTunes Preferences, Advanced, Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
Dragging 40 files from trash to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder on my EHD.
This returned the files but without essential data like the release date/description, which totally messes up my library.
They are no longer listed in date order, and I cannot see if I have the most recent without scrolling down down through sometimes over 200 pods in that album, and even then there is no date order, which orders all podcasts. All the tags/descriptions/comments I spent thousands of hours on are gone.
I just recieved in the mail yesterday my Data Rescue 3 software for an earlier problem,
I do not know if it will help retrieve all the essential data.
I cannot move the files to my desktop because the size, 654 GB, is bigger than my 640 GB mac. Plus, I know from experience this does not preserve the essential data like release date.
My iTunes EHD has 485 GB free out of 1.71 TB.
I can order another 3 TB EHD to arrive in 2 weeks, which I will eventually need, but my husband aint going to be happy. As an old photographer trying to join the digital age, I already have 20 TB storage, mostly for photos, which has put us in debt.
Please, does anyone know how to restore podcasts from trash while retaining metadata?

    Thanks for your sympathy, dclkdm.
    For anybody else out there,
I have had some luck retaining info such as release date, plays, and rating by
dragging podcasts to a Finder folder in iTunes,
    in iTunes Media,
    Automatically Add to iTunes.
So far, I have retrieved all my lost podcasts with Data Rescue 3,
but have not tried to consolidate everything into one library yet.

  • "move to trash" not working in preview

Since I move to OS Lion, the option "move to trash" no longer works in Preview when viewing a .pdf file. I have administrator privileges and the files are not "locked". Is this a bug? Can you help me.
    Thanks in advance.

For me an easy solution worked fine, and inmediately
Check your permisions are correct on your user files.
Navigate to your main hard drive (usually Macintosh HD) and select your /Users folder.
Press  “Cmd+I” to bring up the Get Info window.
Expand the “Sharing and Permissions” arrow.
Next to your username you should see “Read & Write”.
Click the small Gear icon  and then click “Apply to enclosed items…”
    http://www.fixkb.com/2012/09/mac-asking-for-password-when-moving-files-to-trash. html
On that site  is also another solution with terminal, also working for many. Seems you lost rights over your trash, and diskutility couldnt fix it, this helps.

  • I have used recovery software, but am unsure how to identify my deleted (from trash) notes. Anyone know? Thanks.

    Hi there,
Emptied trash, but need to get some notes back. Did a scan with minitool Mac
data recovery, but with so much available for recovery, I'd like to be able to identify
what partition my notes would be in and what the file would look like.
Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

No matter Emptied Trash data can be recovered. SCAN your drive with Data Rescue or Stellar Phoenix Mac from their free demos,if you find your notes back on preview then use any one of them which actually shows recoverable files on preview to recover your lost data.

  • Deleted Emails Do NOT go to trash (not sure where?)

Hi. Before LEOPARD upgrade - when I hit delete for emails (POP earthlink account) they did not go to TRASH -- I ended up finding them under user/library/mail/POP/deleted messages. THEN when I upgraded to LEOPARD I could NOT hit delete to delete emails -- had to drag them to TRASH (on my MAC - but not the EARTHLINK account) -- I then unchecked the"move deleted msg to a separate folder -- and now I CAN hit the delete button to delete -- BUT 1/they don't go to TRASH and 2/ they are NOT in the user/library/mail/POP/Deleted Message -- as pre-LEOPARD
Went to Apple Genius Bar - and was told at different times different things -- neither work -- 1/this must be a problem that they will have a patch for later? 2/for me to re-enter my account info and that this should fix it (did not)
    Any suggestions?

Hi Ernie -- I wanted to let you know that you were correct and resolved my problem. I went to the Genius Bar -- and the issue at hand was as you said -- that my DELETED MESSAGES FOLDER did not have the .mbx suffix - so needed to create it. 1/ I went to mail and re-entered my account info (just to reset it) -- did not completely clear as this could have erased all of my messages. 2/ I then sent a mail to my SECOND POP account -- and then hit delete -- this created a new mailbox under trash. (for some reason this worked THIS time) 3/ I then went to LIBRARY/MAIL/POP2/DELETED MESSAGES and then this account DID have the correct Deleted Messages.mbx suffix. SO POP2 - working fine 4/ Backed up all emails (just in case) 5/Tried to delete a message in the POP1 account -- still would not work -- so COPIED the POP2 account Deleted Messages.mbx to Desktop and then replaced the existing POP FOLDER DELETED MESSAGES from the FIRST POP account with this.(perhaps there was an easier way to do this)? Then we ran rebuild.
Thanks so much -- as you really helped pinpoint the problem - so when I went to the Genius Bar - I could tell them WHERE the problem was! Happy Holidays.

  • IMAP Trash Not Synchronizing

If I delete an item from my Inbox in Thunderbird it moves it to the Trash folder. However, that folder is not synchronizing with my IMAP server so the email still appears in the Inbox on other devices and does not appear in the Trash.
I've searched forums and the settings for a solution for the better part of this morning and I haven't been able to figure it out. Is there a solution to this issue?

I don't think so. You might look for an add-on which places a button into the toolbar, to makes this a little more comfortable.
