Trash problems

Hi,
i deleted an old copy of Iphoto and moved to the trash.
When trying to erase from the trash...it states that certain items are in use and will not delete.
I have tried from finder to secure delete and this does not work either.
Any suggestions please?

Keep the drive mounted.  Reboot and see if you can emptry the trash then.
If that doesn't work try Trash It!.

  • File to Trash Problem

I have Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro with two hard disks. I have files on the secondary disk that will not delete. It gives an error code of 1407. When I check file information, the file is locked. I unlock it but it does not stay unlocked. Any suggestions?

    See if these helps:

And I assume you meant error -1407 (Expected a folder, got a file).

  • Can you help with a Trash problem?

I recently upgarded to 10.6.8 and all has been well.  But now I am having a Trash problem.  I can't drag to trash.  A list comes up, showing 'preparing to move to Trash', with a blue and white flashing line, apparently for every item..  But it has been running every time the machine is awake, since yesterday.  There is no way to delete it and, in the meantime, I can't put things in the trash or empty it.  It seems to be stuck in 'preparing' mode.  Can anyone tell me how to deal with this?  Please?

Sorry, I should have read the side bars first, but didn't notice them.  The old eyes don't work as well anymore.  Anyway, I resolved the problem by following previous advice and apologize for taking up your time to read my problem.  Thanks!

  • Can't drag icon on Desktop to Trash, + another Trash problem

"The item "FB814B00" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted".
I have two such files on my Desktop, different only in the name number:
I have been using MS Office Excel but Excel is presently not running. When I drag the files to the Trash, a "+" sign attaches to the icon, indicating that it is about to be copied somewhere. If I Double-click on it, nothing happens. I can drag other files to the Trash.
Also, if I try to empty the Trash I get:
" The operation can’t be completed because the item “P6290780.JPG” is in use." Stop Continue. Pressing "Continue seems to do nothing. I have searched for “P6290780.JPG”  using Spotlight and have four of them: Two on my Carbon Copy cloner bootable Backup external HD; one in iPhoto as a
Thumbnail and one in iPhoto in a folder called "Masters". I cannot find an open opy of that file.
Now, I have just noticed that there is only one file in the Trash. It is “P6290780.JPG”. Spotlight did not find it.
This seems to be a Mac problem rather than an MS Office problem.
    Any ideas please?
    iMac mid 2011, OS 10.7.1

Solved both problems by Restarting the iMac.
I have had a Mac since the dark days of 1996 and an Apple speaker at a big London exhibition advised restarting the machine about three times per day. This was, as I remember, to clear out accumulated corruption etc. As a result, I did that (but every two days). When I got my new iMac (mid 2011) and Lion 7.1 I thought that those days were gone, but presumably not. (My Mac had been running for about 7 days since the last restart.)

  • Many Trash problems with leopard and no fix

    Hi
I posted that my trash is not emptying under any circumstances no one seemed to know how to solve this. i noticed that there are several people with trash issues (some not emptying until restart, others cant see the trash) i just hope that apple fix this with an update or something. meanwhile i am using a program called onyx to empty my trash and it works fine.

I am not an expert on this but i had a problem similar to what you experienced. I deleted tens of thousands of stuff at one go and it got stuck at one point. But the difference between your experience and mine is that it gave a dialog saying it cant find the file xxx to delete and also that i should click continue to proceed further. needless to say, i had to do that twenty to thirty times with each tiem a dialog popping up with same message but different file. when done, it seems to have deleted all other files except the ones it showed in dialog box. So i opened trash again and option clicked it and everything went away without any dialogs. hope that helps.
I dont know if that applies to secure emptying the trash.

  • Aperture 3.0.2 Trash Problem

Have been using 3.0.2 since it was first released and it's been working correctly but all of a sudden now when I empty the Aperture trash it does NOT go to the finder trash, it just disappears. Anybody know what my problem might be?

According to everything I read, and the way it used to work, when you empty Aperture Trash it is supposed to then be available in the finder trash. I have used the reject option but prefer to use trash because less stored within aperture is better for performance. But I liked having the option of still seeing the deleted photos in finder trash as a backup in case of a mistaken delete.

  • Bridge CS4 trash problem

    Greetings -
Trying to do a major editing job and Bridge wont let me trash files. Can't seem to find anything relevent in Help and a search here came up with nothing. Keep getting a popup stating I don't have sufficient privleges. Have no idea what this is about. More than a mere annoyance.
Hope someon here can point me in the ight direction.

    After checking 'get info' for
both image files and the disc, I noticed that under Sharing and Permissions
for the disc that there are two items, Test and Everyone, listed under You
have custom access. Test has 'read and write' listed and Everyone has 'read
only'. Not sure just what that means, as it's nothing I had set up.
If I compare this with my set up and choose the disk where the system is
installed on it shows system and admin as read and write and everyone only
read. (and I have also a stand alone with me as administrator)
When in the user section (all content from my user folder on this disk) it
shows me as user for read and write and both staff and everyone as only
    read.
If you have a user account created for testing and called that test and this
shows only test it seems to me that you are logged in under this user
    account.
In the system preferences under the tab Accounts you can check this and also
change it if you have admin rights (as you stated to have that should not
    give any problems).
For the image file 'get info', under Sharing and Permissions, it shows 'you
can only read'  - Test and Everyone.
Meaning you have no rights to change or trash that file.
In File Sharing in System Preferances, everything is unchecked.
To my knowledge checking file sharing on and adding other user could give
you access to those files. However, as administrator and only user it would
be best to operate from your own user account and after heaving logged in
from that account check if you are able to see all read and write
    permissions for the files.
Not sure if this has a bearing on the problem, but the image files are on a
sperate drive from the system and Bridge drive. Just for grins I turned on
File Sharing in 'Sharing' Preferences. No change.
I assume you also did a get info for that disk because if the files are on
that disk it should say that you have read and write permissions and that
should also be for the files on it.
Sorry for the long winded post. I'm just starting Light Room, and am in the
process of revamping my workflow to try and get better control over my files.
Pretty ugly mess after 10+ years of bad and sloppy habits.
I wonder if you are able to trash the files in Lightroom because that would
be a surprise for me. Still think it is a user account and read write
    permission problem

  • Deleting trash problems

    Hello !
I have a problem when I try to delete a single item located in my trash. I got an error code -36.
I give you a picture of the trash just below, then you see what's in there.
I tried the secured deleting of the trash, but now way...
I tried "Trash it" and it was ok for trashing everything else but the directory "bundles (désactivés)" below.
Thank you for you answer !
    Nicolas

    Hi !
Sorry, but that didn't help me at all. Tried all the techniques described in the document you suggested to me.
I thought the "sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash" would give me the solution...
Any clue ? The file and the directory that is in my trash is something that has to do with the mail application.
    Thanks for your answer

  • Mail Trash Problem

    Hi
I'm using Mail with my .Mac account and after opening mail this morning, I tried to delete an email message and found that my TRASH had vanished! There is no TRASH folder on the left hand pane. I don't know where my deleted mesage has gone as it would normlly be stored in TRASH.
I've checked in PREFERENCES>ACCOUNTS>MAILBOX BEHAVIORS and "move deleted messages to the TRASH mailbox" is checked.
Can someone please help me to restore my trash? Many thanks!
    MacBook 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Ben.
I don’t really know what’s going on here, but this being a .Mac account, re-creating com.apple.mail.plist would be painless, and hence worth a try.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.8 trash problem

After the upgrade to 10.4.8 the trash menu pops up OK from the dock on control-click or right-click but the menu items do not work. In fact it "freezes" the dock and requires returning to finder menu to rectify problem.
Trash can now ONLY be emptied from Finder Menu.
Is this a bug or what?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I have no problem emptying the trash from either the Finder menu or dock. When you right-click on the dock trash, is the "empty trash" item in the contextual menu greyed-out?
The 10.4.8 update (I used the combined update rather than the delta version) ran smoothly. I have not seen any problems yet with my system.
Did you repair permissions using Disk Utility from the Utility folder after the update/restart? Important to do so.

  • Trash Problems - A solution?

I am not very knowledgeable about the Mac and recently installed Leopard. I have been having difficulty removing Camera Raw files from my computer. When I would go to the trash bin and click on empty the trash bin, I would get this query "remove trash securely" which I had never seen before, nor which I understood its significance. Anyways it didn't matter how many times I clicked on this the program would get locked up and I would have to force quit. I also noticed problems with other files which would take a long time to remove. Last night for some mysterious reason the files were removed and they reappeared again when I came back to the computer this morning.
So I downloaded Trash It and this seems to work. I tried unsuccessfully to use some Unix commands that were on one of the websites. Since removing the files I changed the preferences in finder so I could just trash files and not do it "securely". Hopefully these two moves will solve this problem. There definitely seems to be a problem with Leopard's remove trash features.

  • Emptying Trash Problem

I have over a thousand items in the trash and cannot empty it because it keeps warning me that constant frames, capture scratch, autosave vault etc are in use. I have moved my video files to a raid array and reconnected the media so don't need these files. I can't even drag the files out to the desktop from the trash as it leaves a copy in the trash. It has been suggested for me to use some software that will force the items to delete from the trash, but does anyone have a recommendation or suggest what I can do?

HOld down the OPTION key when emptying trash. If they are still there, use the Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • RE:  iPhoto emptying trash problem

I have been having trouble with this. After I select the empty trash bin,
the iPhoto stalls and do not respond. I have no other way but to force
quit. I have a lot of photos in the trash bin, approx 2-3Gb. Please help
to provide some tips on how I can empty them. Thanks!

Flag ehm so you can find them again and restore them to the library and delete in batches of 100 or so - iphoto does not handle large deletes at one time

  • Desktop to Trash Problem: "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."

Suddenly today I get a dialog box stating "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this," whenever I attempt to drag a file from the desktop into the Trash on the dock.  How can I stop this and return to a normal function of dragging desktop files into the trash?  Thanks in advance.

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
