Trash

When I place files in my trash bin it still shows empty, then when I click on it the contents show plus a folder called recovered files.
This only began this AM whilst I was installing a network printer, help please
Robert

Sometimes a simple reboot of your system will resolve the issue.
If not open Terminal.app and paste the following:
sudo rm -R ~/.Trash
enter your password, (note: no echo)
then paste:
killall Finder
then paste:
exit
to end terminal and quit.
I'd also open Disk Utility and run "Repair Permissions"--it may not help, but if the trash is screwed up something else might be, and it certainly won't hurt anything.

  • Adobe Stock Photos Stuck in Trash and Photoshop CS2 won't run!

Okay, I apparently did something stupid. I'm not even sure how this happened, but I realized that Adobe Stock Photos folder was sitting on my desktop (I'm using OS X 10.5.6). I don't know when this happened and I didn't think I needed it so I dragged it to the trash. NOW I cannot run any of my Adobe software (includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2 and GoLive CS2).
I can see the folder sitting in my trash, but it won't let me drag it back out. So, just as a test, I tried dragging out the one other file (.jpg) and I can't get that one either. I know this isn't a Mac forum, but I'm desparate and cannot find anything to help me.
Probably I am going to have to reinstall everything and (of course) I can't find my CDs!!! Please don't get angry if I'm asking the wrong question. I've done an internet search and I cannot find any solutions.
    Thanks, Anne

Adobe stock photos does not even exist anymore.
Have you tried deleting your trash? I have no Adobe stock Photos on my computer and everything works. try restarting the computer.

  • DOWNLOADS FROM TRASH FOLDER

I have founbd a further problem somewhat related to my previous posting today.
My Windows live Mail is downloading the emails which BT has been moved to the trash folder.  Surely if they have been regarded as trash, it should not be possible for them to be downloaded.  I thought only the inbox was downloaded.
If this is not the case, how do I stop what BT regards as trash, from being downloaded.
    Thanks again,
    Geoff.

Have you checked your BT Mail settings? There are options to switch spam filtering on or off under "Spam settings for POP users".

  • Unable to delete file from trash because it's "in use" not locked.

I'm unable to delete a file from trash. I keep getting the following message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item is in use."  I've confirmed the file isn't locked and I've tried renaming it but still no luck. I'm running OSX 10.8.4. Any thoughts?

Check the 'More Like This' discussions on the right hand column.  I suspect you may find the answer there.
    Ciao.

  • Cannot delete file from trash - tried EVERYTHING

Wow. I have an incredibly stubborn file (named :VBL followed by a bunch of non English symbols) in the trash that I cannot get rid of. I have tried all the usual methods of deleting, secure deleting, using Cocktail, and literally _EVERY SINGLE METHOD_ listed on both of these websites:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
    http://osxfaq.com/Tutorials/LearningCenter/HowTo/Trash/page2.ws
All to no avail. There still is one file in my trash that will not go away. Any other alternatives?

That worked!! Thank you so much. Can't believe I went through all those other methods and it was as simple as a Windows chkdsk. I wonder how it even happened that the Windows partition created an undeletable file in my OS X partition??
it actually wasn't in the OS X partition. it was still in the windows partition but due to some file system errors in the windows partition it became visible (but not deletable) from OS X.

  • 2TB Ext. Hard Drive is corrupted?, error code -50 and then error code -35 when i try to empty out my trash

okay so a few days ago i received and email for one of my colleagues to do some final editing to a music video. the folder contained 2 videos a rough chops and the main which was about 2-3GB which i dragged on to my external hard drive . and at the time i was trying to install a trial version of parallel lines and me being a newbie to the software i didn't know i need windows installments for it to run lol but yeah... so i was just getting frustrated with the software i kept installing it uninstalling it and then i was thinking my the problem might be because my MacHD space is low (less then 40GBs on my MacHD), so.. i installed it on my hard drive where all my important files are (I'm a graphic designer and do light video editing) video projects and many photoshop projects form 2007 and logs and just a bunch of important files in my hard drive. so because i was so frustrated with the software i wasn't thinking and i installed it on my external 2TB hard drive. and when i realized parallel wasn't working i gave up, uninstalled the program form the hard drive and for some reason when i did that and i tried opening the video my friend had email to me and for some reason it did load up but a few seconds maybe about 10sec in the video is froze and closed my media app (VLC) and when i tried opening other video files it would freeze every few minutes but those specific files i had drag in last were not playing after at least 5 secs and eventually didn't open at all so i restart my computer login and now i get scared i see that my MacBook Pro isn't reading my external hard drive so i search threw forums... i unplug from the wall plug my external hard drive back in my computer and it loaded up but when i opened my external hard drive all my files had that plank white paper icon on my folders (because i have everything organized but subject when you open then drive folder. so... i go in to my projects and nothing, i open my edited photos and nothing... my hart feels like its about to drop and i keep opening files and there is nothing in them, but in "get info" of my drive it shows that there is filled so i go to "disk utility"... i "verify disk" passes ..."repair disk" doesn't past.... i look it up in forums... so i reboot my computer and go to the safe recovery menu. go threw the same ting "disk utility"... verify, pass... repair, pass... so now i feel relieved. i login files in the ext. hard drive load up i tried again to open the files and same thing happens... so now I'm thinking its the files i drag the files to the trash and try to empty and its gone i reboot the computer and my drive didn't load up so i tried unplugin it and back in... drive comes up i notice theres trash.. i tried emptying it and i get the error code -50. and no files are popping up on my external drive and i try to repair/unmount disk and the verify disk doesn't pass and when i click repair disk it doesn't past and another error code pops up -35.... so i felt my drive alone for a few days and yesterday i go the files deleted from the trash and now I'm not getting any codes but when i try to unmount.verify/repair the disk. keeps letting my tits need to be repaired so i click the repair button another error unable to unmount volume to repair...
what do i do? my files still don't show up. and I'm very sorry for the long paragraph but i have to be detailed for you to understand my situation

  • Power Mac 10.5.8 Cannot Eject Drives or Send Files to Trash

    Hello,
I'm posting to the forum for a friend. He is using a Power Mac OSX 10.5.8 with Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5 processor. The past two months he has been having issues deleting files and ejecting drives (flash drives and external hard drives). He will move files to the trash and the animation (poof of dust) and sound will occur but the actual file is not deleted. Also, when he tries to eject any drives, an error message appears stating the drive is in use by other applications. However, no other applications besides finder are open, and when I check the task manager, none are running in the background. This error has caused one of his external hard drives to become corrupted. We recently updated the computer and after the update the permissions were messed up and we couldn't even create a new folder due to insufficient permisions. We're currently running all available first-aid commands from disk utility. If anyone knows what the issue might be, please respond.
    Much appreciated, blessings.
    Isabel

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • How do I uninstall from iMac? I keep getting malware saying my pc (wrong!) has suspicious programs, etc., even though I have drug it to trash and reinstalled several times.

Earlier today Firefox crashed. Later a window came up, with the rest of the screen grayed-out, saying there is suspicious programs on my 'pc' (wrong because I have an iMac) and it will run a scan to see if there are any suspicious programs. I immediately quit Firefox, with an additional window popping up asking if I really wanted to quit the page, that data may be lost. I quit. I tried restarting my computer, but in opening Firefox, it did the same thing. I then tried to delete FF by dragging it from my appl. folder to trash and reinstalling using Safari. Did this several times with the same result...still get the popup window saying the same thing each time.

  • Is this a copy of my hard drive?  Can I trash it?

    Hello Helpful Apple People,
I recently hit too many of the wrong keys at the same time and I ended up with this icon on my desktop:
I'm not sure what it is, but I believe it's a copy of my hard drive?  (My original hard drive is still on the desktop.)  I'd like more than anything to throw it in the trash, but I want to make sure that before I do, that won't ruin anything.   Thanks.

    Thanks, Niel.
Can you explain what an alias is and why someone would want one?  Why is it useful?
    Jim

  • HT1449 Ok. I have an '06 Macbook Pro still running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.6.1. I did everything in this article leading up to step 14. I thought I trashed the right file, now I can't access my music which is on my external drive now. Help!

As stated in my above Subject field. I have an older Macbook Pro and I was attempting to move my iTunes media file using this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
After getting to step number 14, I "thought" I selected the correct media file to trash from my system. Now I have my correctly copied Itunes file on my external drive that can't be accessed when I reopen iTunes. How can I get iTunes to open to my new destination now? I went to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and selected the new location then click OK, but it still won't access.
What am I doing wrong here?

I had the same problem and found the answer!
In Outlook, go to the Help menu, then Check for Updates.
I downloaded & updated Outlook, then it upgraded my database, and everything worked out fine for me!
    Good luck!

  • I am trying to delete Spotify completely on Yosemite. I think I was doing well so far but there's this file left in the trash that I can't get rid of because 'it's in use'(???)

Hello! Here's some information that might be familiar, I don't know:
I got my Mac late 2014
    Yosemite, 13-inch, Retina
    120 GB, 8 GB RAM
This would be the second time that I'm 'uninstalling' Spotify. The first time was a few months back, when it wouldn't play music and it said something like it's not available in my country (?! which is another issue altogether 'cause my sister can totally use it here). So I uninstalled it and I thought it was gone. Just last week, however, I installed it again because I realised it was working perfectly fine for some people so I wanted to try, and it still says not available on the website so I uninstalled it again. (Which may or may not just be a fault in my part because I didn't really look too closely.)Anyway, while trying to fix something on my Mac this morning, I found out that I somehow had Spotify running in my login items. And this was weirding me out because I knew it was already deleted! Completely! Here is a screenshot just to show you where it used to be and what I mean. I only thought of taking a screenshot after deleting all the Spotify items hehe (ALL, or so I thought! --wait for it--). Sorry, but you get the idea.
This time, I remembered that you don't completely erase a program by the usual way of dragging the icon to the Trash etc etc (that's what I've been doing until just last week) and that you should go to the Library and erase even the preferences files or something. So I did this to Spotify and suddenly there's this tiny file that won't go away that says that it's in use even though I know perfectly as far as my knowledge goes that it is not being freakin' used as of the moment.
And it just bugs me that I can't completely empty my trash because of this one sneaky little file that wasn't even aware had been running on my computer I know this isn't the saddest, most tragic Mac dilemma out there and, clearly, many people have had it worse, but please help me

That file could be set as a Launch Agent or Daemon in your ~/Library or /Library, You could try to look for it or Safeboot your computer and then empty the trash. Safebooting disables Launch Agents/Daemon and Third Party Kernal extensions. Here's the article to Safeboot OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

  • I put photos in trash and emptied it! Can I get files bacK?

I threw my entire photo library in trash (don't ask) and emptied it. I've been trying to recover files with Data Rescue II -- have run it three times and every time, it sticks when I get to "Scanning Drive, Postprocessing CBR Data"
The first time it said: remaining time = 16 mins. 2nd time: remaining time = 18 mins. This time it says: Remaining time about 17 mins.
I started it last night at 10 pm. It's been stuck on "17 minutes remaining" since I got up this morning.
ANyone have any suggestions for getting it to process the hard drive?
Is there any other software I should try? I stopped using hard drive as soon as I realized what I'd done. I backed it up on external hard drive and am running off of that. (I know, I should have backed up BEFORE I deleted everything. Yikes)
    Thanks for any suggestions...!

The File Salvage program is truly a god send. It had been recommended to me and admittedly I was a bit skeptical. Ultimately, I did decide to download and purchase the Sunday morning following my unfortunate mishap and try it.
I am so happy that I did decide to buy and try it.
The downside is that can be time consuming as it automatically assigns new generic file names / numbers to each file that necessitates the user to open each file to determine if it is a file that he/she wishes to rename and save.
The upside is that I got all my files back and of course my sanity, as well.

  • I recently tried to burn some photos to a disc.  It did not work, but then I ended up with a .fpbf folder on my desktop.  Can't trash it, and when trying to burn again, I get this "... can't be burned because the original items can't be found". Help???

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work.  Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it.  I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes.  Doing so, does nothing at all.  And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?".   When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD.  In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop.  I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?
    Thank you.

    Beavis2084,
Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
    Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).
I don't know what to do anymore...

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.
