Trashed an app, but app icon in Finder sidebar won't "leave"

I downloaded an application called Error Codes; thought it would help me understand some of the error codes that pop up during iTunes downloads.  Wasn't helpful; decided to trash it.  The app, of coursre, was in the applications folder; I had its icon in the Finder sidebar too. I trashed the app, but I can't get rid of the sidebar icon; can't even click on it.  Tried dragging it out, it just flies back to it's spot.  How do I get rid of it?

Try holding down the command key when dragging it out of the sidebar. A "poof" should appear, indicating that when you let go it will vanish (poof!).

  • How do I delete a program I downloaded?  I dragged it to the trash from download, but its icon is still there?

I downloaded a program and don't want it.  I dragged it to the trash from "downloads" but the icon is
still there.  I want to get rid of it totally.

Still where? If in the Trash, then Empty the Trash. If in your Applications folder then select the application's icon. CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Move to Trash from the context menu. Empty the Trash.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How can i get coloured icons in finder sidebar?

Is there a way to get coloured icons in finder sidebar?
The greyscale icons are not really userfriendly ...
    Thx,
    Chriz

Finder, like the rest of Lion, has been visited by the color vampire
Apple says that its goal with the Lion user interface was to highlight content by de-emphasizing the surrounding user interface elements. You can see this most clearly in sidebar and toolbar icons, which are now monochromatic in most of the important bundled applications. But this has the unfortunate side effect of making interface elements less distinguishable from each other, especially at the small sizes typical in sidebars. I'm not sure the "increased emphasis on content" is enough to balance out the loss, especially in applications like the Finder.

  • Lost icons in finder sidebar, and folders that won't go away

I've somehow lost the icons for documents, movies, music and pictures in the finder sidebar...and i dragged some folders to the sidebar to use temporarily but they keep reappearing even after i've trashed them...is there a way to reset my sidebar to the default (and tehn i will hope that solves both problems)? Thanks!

    Hi AYS,
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Untitled cd now appears in my finder sidebar - won't delete

hi, all About 20mins ago a shortcut appeared in my Finder sidebar, for something called Untitled CD. Instead of having an eject button next to it, like an actual cd would have, this has a black and yellow wheel next to it. This is of particular annoyance to me, as i am now unable to burn any CD's. Instead a message pops up saying burn is currently in use by another program. I have tried everything to delete it, but it just wont go! Whats more interesting is that I have a macbook air, and the icon appears even when my external dvd drive isn't plugged in.

You have to hold down command, and drag it iut of the sidebar.

  • How to add app icon to finder toolbar

I may have done this back in leopard, I do not remember, but they are still there in 10.9.  You used to be able to add an application to the toolbar in Finder by dragging it there.
Now I want to do this with a new 10.9 user install, but the application icon will not add when dragged to the Finder toolbar.  How do you do this in 10.9?

That does not work in Mavericks.
You can launch your apps from the Dock or Applications folder or from Recent Items in the Apple menu  drop down menu.

  • App icons in the sidebar?

Just upgraded from 10.6 to Mavericks.  Lots of changes to get used to.
Does the sidebar in the finder window no longer allow the application icons to be seen?
I've always preferred to have certain apps in the sidebar rather than in the dock ... and now all I see is the same generic pencil-A icon for every single app, making them hard to distinguish in a long list.
How can I get the customized icon for each app to appear in the sidebar?

This does not sound correct. Can you post a screen shot?
    Command-Shift-3 takes the entire screen
Command-Shift-4 takes a portion of the screen. <--use this one
Use the camera icon to upload the image.
Start by running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility then restart in Safe boot mode and see if these simple steps help.
    To use Repair Permissions:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
    2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
    3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
    4. Click the repair permissions button.
    Safe boot
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
After logging into your User, do you still see the problem?
If yes, testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
    CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

  • I tried to download the latest version, but the icon (1 of 2) won't let me move it into the place where the old icon is shown at the bottom of my MAC screen.

I tried to download the latest version, and an icon popped up, which I dragged into the Firefox icon at the bottom of the screen, but another firefox icon appeared on the screen (it says 1 of 2 selected, Zero KB available) and when I tried to also drag that into the Firefox icon at the bottom of the screen, it wouldn't move into it.

  • My Finder Sidebar Won't Resize

My finder window's sidebar appears to be locked and I cannot resize it.  I've read that when putting my mouse in the line between the sidebar and the files area to the right it should change to a bar cursor that I can then use to resize the sidebar.  But the cursor never changes when I do this so I cannot resize the sidebar.  Any suggestions to re-enable this?

If you can't get this to happen...EDIT: Well it did not include the cursor as a cross in the image for forget the screenshot.
Then go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.

  • How do I create shortcuts in the finder sidebar for network folders?

I used to be able to cmd-T or drag/drop a network folder to the sidebar in Finder and have a permanent alias/shortcut. After the Lion upgrade I can not figure out how to do that. I was able to drag a shortcut to the desktop but when I clicked on it, I got an error that it was not available when in fact it was still connected.

    Hi all ...
Have finally broken down and switched to Lion....
one of the most convenient things for me as a photoshopper about Snow Leopard was to be able to have sort cuts in the finder side bar under "Places" so i could just drag the image i wanted to open to the left onto the App icon and it would open it from there.  NOW I have drag it to the dock to open or open the
dropdown menu... both slower.  I am not happy about this.... Is there a way to get this function back... I have looked and looked and can't find it!

  • Customizing Finder sidebar

    Hi all,
I just have a quick question. Is there a way to add custom apps to the Finder sidebar other than the one listed in the Finder Preferences? I have a gDisk (like an iDisk but instead of a .Mac account it uses your Gmail account) - is there a way I can add that "Disk" to the top of the Finder sidebar, just the same way as an iDisk does?
    -Thanks, William

Just want to add myself to the list of customer's disappointed about the sidebar changes.  The icons should definitely be in color and devices at the top... Now when I need to eject something I have to go searching at the bottom for it grr.
I'm sending Apple feedback about this.  Everyone should do that and hopefully they'll make a change

  • How do I restore missing Finder sidebar?

My Finder sidebar won't show Home, Desktop, Applications, All My Files -- even though they are checked in Finder Preferences.
I tried three suggestions I spotted in the forums, but didn't fix:
    1. Disk utility repairs
    2. Deleting 'com.apple.sidebarlists.plist'  (file not in Library)
    3. View - show sidebar.
    I have MBA, 1.6GHz, 4GB, v10.7.4
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,
I had the same problem and solved it a very easy way. Infact I felt pretty silly. Haha hopefully this solves your problem too.
Close all finder windows so when you click the finder icon it opens a new finder window, one with no sidebar. Then go View>Show Toolbar
Then once the toolbar is enabled, the view/hide sidebar toggle becomes activated in that same menu.
Good Luck! Let me know if that fixed it.

  • I've "successfully" installed the latest version of Flash Player. How do I find where it "lives" so that I'm certain it's in there. Also, do I put the App icon in the trash now? (I am on a Mac) Thank you!

I've "successfully" installed the latest version of Flash Player, as recommended by Firefox. How do I find where it "lives" so that I'm certain it's in there. Also, do I put the App icon that appears on my desktop, in the trash now? I am on a Mac and I am not technically inclined.
    Thank you!

Your list of plugins shows that you have installed Flash 10.2 r152 which is the current release version.

  • I downloaded iBook but the icon is not on my desktop and I can't find the app using search.  This is a bug, what's the fix?

I have tried downloading free books in an effort to bring up the app and they download but I can't find them either.
    What do I do?

Hi Carolyn:   Thanks for the suggestion regarding the screen swipe.  I did this before logging this question.
HI King:  You were spot on.
To the Apple community:  Thank you for the quick responses.  I empathize with Apple's challenge -- the technical support logistics are exponentially more difficult in supporting consumer products -- especially non-commoditized products -- than in supporting an enterprise products.  So thank you to the Apple community for reaching out to help the company as an adjunct.  It certainly is unique.
This does not alleviate Apple's responsibility to release note this issue, to insert a message on the screen telling the user to reboot or to create a fix in a future software release that allows the icon to show up without rebooting.    Thanks

My trackpad is responding the click on finder, i can use multitouch but not leftclick/1 click/touch. Aswell when i go to the findertab at the bottom with the mouse, app icons Does Not expand. I had no problems with it before, but I'm very confused.

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
