Trashing old movies

How do you go about safely trashing old movies that you are finished with? They are "hogging" all my disk space.

Open your Capture Scratch folder, find the footage you're done with, drag those clips to the trash, empty the trash. If you've exported QuickTime movies of your projects, you can trash them too.
I find it easiest to identify clips if I'm using column view in the finder.

my iphone won't allow me to trash old email messages -- I get the little window that says "Unable to Move Message -- The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash." AT&T can't help me -- no one else has this problem, even though we're all on the same server from my company. I have restored to factory settings, but it didn't help. My email account settings are correct, the same as on my computers, and I can trash old messages on them.
    What do I do now?

I have had a similar problem recently and followed advice here. Specifically, I used the brute force approach. As suggested by this site, I strongly urge you to backup your mailbox before trying this fix - just to be on the safe side.

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.

  • Why can't I play an old movie purchased from iTunes and later uploaded to iTunes from an external hard drive on my Apple TV?

I bought Ratatouille some years ago from iTunes downloaded onto a 1st gen Apple TV, and subsequently to an old MacBook.  I had backed that MacBook up to an external HD.  A couple computers from that time and now I have a new gen ATV.  I noticed that all my old movies showed up to stream on the new ATV's system except Ratatouille.  So today I decided to upload the movie onto my new MBP's iTunes.  But the movie won't show up on ATV.  Again, this is an iTunes-purchased movie so it has nothing to do with format.  I can play the movie through "home sharing" but I shouldn't have to leave my MBP open to play the movie - it should be available on my "purchased" selection that can be played at any time.  Any suggestions how to resolve this issue?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, best to contact itunes then so they can look into it

Why the ISTORE of Malta is not up to date with the latest movies and series like the UK & USA and why old movies are being uploaded .
I believe the apple should be universal in all the products and a small island like Malts should have the same products for sale on ISTORE like of the UK and USA.

The iTunes and App stores are inherently different in different countries.  Local laws on copyright and other limits on the distribution of intellectual property make it impossible for Apple to simply put everything in every store.  Sometimes, the owner of the intellectual property does not allow it to be distributed everywhere.  Keep in mind that Apple does not own the music, books, movies and such that they allow for sale in their store front, so they do not necessarily have any say in what may, or may not appear in what store.

  • Burning old .mov files in iMovie HD6 (iDVD)

I have a number of old "movies" in the .mov format originally produced in iMovie02 and iMovie03 that I would like to burn again using the DVD burner in iLife06.
Unfortunately the old .mov file when I do burn it produces a result with large pixels, etc
The problem I think is that I need to somehow convert the .mov to a .dv file that the new iLife06 (iDVD) likes...
Is this possible? Is there a way to convert old .mov files to .dv files or should I try something else?
Many thanks for yet another dumb question!

Have you tried importing the files into iMovie yet? iMovie should automactically convert the files to DV.
Not knowing anything else about the xxx.mov files I suggest that.
Can you remember when you exported them from the old iMovie versions if it was at "full quality"?
What program did you use to burn the xx.mov files?
Hopefully you can view them on a TV monitor once they're converted to dv inside iMovie and report back how they look.

  • Old mov files pixelate on Quicktime 7.6

Just updated to Quicktime 7.6 and found that old mov files (over 5 years old) now have a lot of pixel distortion over the video during playback. This did not happen on previous Quicktime version as I viewed some of these files within the last two weeks.
Can anyone help with a fix for this?
Can I install an old version of quicktime just to play these older files?

Cinepak is completely out of date, and from 18 years ago.
Cinepak is a video codec developed by Peter Barrett at SuperMac Technologies, and released in 1991 with the Video Spigot, and then in 1992 as part of Apple Computer's QuickTime video suite. It was designed to encode 320x240 resolution video at 1x (150 kbyte/s) CD-ROM transfer rates. The codec was ported to the Microsoft Windows platform in 1993. It was also used on first-generation and some second-generation CD-ROM game consoles, such as the Atari Jaguar CD, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and 3DO.
It was the primary video codec of early versions of QuickTime and Microsoft Video for Windows, but was later superseded by Sorenson Video, Intel Indeo, and most recently MPEG-4 and H.264. However, movies compressed with Cinepak are generally still playable in most media players.
Cinepak is based on vector quantization, which is a significantly different algorithm from the discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm used by most current codecs (in particular the MPEG family, as well as JPEG). This permitted implementation on relatively slow CPUs, but tended to result in blocky artifacting at low bitrates, which explained the criticism levelled at the FMV-based video games.

  • Creating Artifacts for "old Movie" look

I'm trying to create a symbol that will go over a silver screen in a project i'm working on. The symbol I want to repeat over and over and create an artifact look. Like how in the old moves you would sometimes get those lines on the sides or splotches.
I've tried doing a mask (So that only a certian amount of space is visable.) but it jsut flashed black and white.

Also, and I know I'm going to get flac for mentioning this, Matrox has a pretty good "Old Movie" effect.  We've got the RT.X2 card and I used the effect for some footage a client needed for a Western-themed event.  It let you control the amount of dust and scratches, the jitter effect and the grainness as well as making it pure black and white or sepia colored.
If you're looking for a free method, you can create the effect manually using After Effects, but it takes some effort.  I'm pretty sure there are some tutorials out there to show you how to do it.
    Take a look at this:

  • MAIL - freeing up space (trashing old attachments)

Hey folks - I thought I remember reading an article in Macworld a few years back about "cleaning up" Mail. That is, freeing up space on your computer by trashing old mail attachments lurking in the SENT and TRASH (and other) mailboxes. Does anyone recall or know how to do this? Thanks!

I didn't read that article but you might find this page helpful

  • Unpleasant surprise after buying my first iMAC- what do I do with old movies?

I just switched to the MAC after using Windows since it came out based on the promise that everything is so easy to perform with it...
I have many short movies (most just a few minutes long, a few 10-20 minutes) in different formats created by different camcorders. These movies are my most valuable electronic assets that I have and I want to safe keep them in some format that is "standard" and will be readable hopefully for many years.
I assumed that I can just move them into iMovie, have them safely in easy to manage/backup libraries. As I started looking into this I am seeing that there are all kind of format compatibility issues and that I might have to convert the movies one by one with 3rd party software and that it can take hours to do that for each. I know nothing about the technical aspects of movie making/editing. I didn't have this problem on Windows where all my movies and pictures could be easily viewed with the application that came with the Camcorder. The Camcorder doesn't seem to have a version of the application for the MAC. The file formats that I see are: VOB,IFO,BUP; NVC; m2ts.modd,m2ts.
I have one more week when I can return the MAC. It seems that I asked for a major headache that I was not aware of. Could someone enlighten me (or point me to relevant info) re. options I have for saving, viewing movies on the MAC? Maybe I just don't understand what I am dealing with. Thanks in advance.

Since the last post I looked at my old movie clips on tape and their DVD copies. It seems that the original tapes are better quality than the DVDs. Since I no longer have the old Camcorder that produced these tapes but I have a VCR, I looked around at what is that I could use to copy the clips from the tape directly to my hard drive. I found the following info on a website:
"To transfer VHS tapes directly to your computer, I would recommend using a video capture adapter that will be the connection between your computer and the VCR. Video capture adapters on Amazon will typically cost between $7 and $10. The great thing about a video capture adapter is that you will be able to connect to a VCR (or a camcorder) and transfer your videos directly to your computer.”.
There are lots of video capture adapters.  A sample video capture adapter at Walmart:
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Elgato-Video-Capture/13920315#ProductDetail
"Use this Elgato Video Capture to transfer video to your Mac from a DVR, VCR camcorder or any other analog video device. You can use this adapter to create digital copies of your outdated VHS tapes, further preserving precious memories. The adapter will format the video as an iTunes-ready H.264 or MPEG-4 file. There is no easier or more convenient way to transfer home video to your computer. Elgato Video Capture captures your analog video in the universal H.264 format and sends it to your iTunes or Windows Media Player library. No lengthy re-encoding is required, so your video is immediately ready to playback on your computer; to sync with your iPad or iPhone; to upload to YouTube; and to edit in iMovie or Windows Live Movie Maker."
In the prior postings I was advised to convert the movies to MP4. The above device delivers MPEG-4 formats. I looked up the difference between MP4 and MPEG-4 and found the following:
Key difference: MPEG-4 is a method of defining compression of audio and visual digital data. MPEG-4 can be used for compression of AV data for web, as used for streaming media, for CD distribution, as well as for voice broadcast television applications. The MP4 is a container format. This means that it can be used to store audio and/or video data.
This is very confusing. If I'd use the above described video capture adapter, would I achieve the same result as I would achieve with a converter (Handbreaker) and would I be able to import the files into iMovie?
    I'd appreciate some clarification. Thanks.

  • My old movies now only play the audio

My old movies that used to work just fine on my 60 GB Ipod are now only playing as audio files.
The problem started about a month ago, not sure why. Probably windows, lol. When i went to the video list all of a sudden EVERY song and video was being displayed as a video. However, the tracks that were truly videos were playing as audio only. So i went to video settings and made sure that it wasn't on tv out. The problem persists. So then i connected my ipod to my computer and under the ipod summary screen it says i have audio, photos, but no video. So i went to "get info" on the videos to see if they had changed into audio files but it still says under "summary" and then "kind" that it is a MPEG-4 video file. So then i tried playing it in itunes and IT WORKS FINE! I will mention again that all these videos were playing just fine before. What is going on!?!?
    HEEEELP!!!!
    -   Windows XP   Windows suks.

Go to edit-->preferences with the iPod showing up in iTunes and hit the iPod tab. Then hit the podcasts tab under the iPod. Make sure transfer all podcasts is bubbled. Now go to the videos tab and make sure transfer all videos is selected. Click okay.
    See if they now appear

Want to convert old movie files to put in Itunes.
What does "old movies" mean to you? File type, audio and/or video compression format(s)?
Can't upgrade QT player preinstalled, so downloaded QT Player 7 and purchased QTPlayer 7 Pro registration code.  Can not get it to upgrade.
Did you follow the instructions found here?
If you have a fix, you can email me direct at [email protected]
To which fix do you refer? Activatng QT 7 Pro or converting the files? Even with QT 7 Pro activated you may need to modify your QT codec component configuration depending on the file type and compression formats used to encode your "old movies." There may be many different problems here with each having one or more "fixes." Please try to be more specific regarding your questions. Converting a muxed VOB MPEG2/AC3 file would be very different different from converting an AVI DivX5/MP3 file depending on which application you are attempting to use.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.
