Trashing "previous systems" folder - applications in use by current system

Hi, Ive made a total mess of reinstalling tiger (probably cos I didnt do a clean install).
everything is working fine, but now ive got a "previous systems" folder on my hardrive that weighs something like 40GB. I was advised it was okay to trash this folder as so long as i'd got any user prefernces out of application support and copied them to the new system. I did this, but next time I went to open my email I was told I couldnt because the application was located in the trash. i tried opening text edit also, and the same problem. so the new system is clearly running applications out of the previous system folder. why?
can someone please tell me how to sort this out? my harddisk is now overflowing due to this folder, and I dont know what i can and cant delete from it (or even where to put the stuff I DONT delete). Help!

There may be a way to get the previous Home Directory files from
the old Previous System folder; and under certain conditions, this
is possible. The error in your current situation appears to be due
to not selecting to save old user accounts & settings in the new one.

There are times where it is preventative to have a backup clone on
some external bootable hard disk drive; and test it before proceeding
in an upgrade or update, then you could revert back by bringing the
clone back into the computer's hard disk drive, if needed. Without a
cloned system, or ideally a complete hard drive clone, this is harder.
Good luck & happy computing!

Ok, I was trying to change the folder background on my home drive in finder.
I Changed the background in the Home drive and then went to 'Show info' and clicked 'apply to enclosed items' in 'sharing and permissions'
Ive had over 300 messages saying

I tried repairing permissions, but that doesnt work. Im constantly getting random permission error messages, my plugins in logic dont work properly and are generating error messages, audio wierdness in logic, all kinds of stuff
oh if i could turn back the clock. What have i done?, and how can i fix it?

Hi, thanks for your reply, and sorry if  my description was unclear. I started by changing the folder background here:
Then I went here (apply to enclosed items). You can see on the shot ive taken, permissions state 'you can only read' , and under name 'fetching'.
Then, after a few minutes, i got around 300 of this (**** refers to all the 300 different filenames that came up)

Was the WS-X6708-10GE inserted some time after the router was last reloaded?  Cisco's PFC/DFC FAQ states that mixing different types of PFCs and DFCs affects OIR (online insertion and removal) - i.e. the router needs to be reloaded with the line-card installed in order for that PFC/DFC combination to work as expected (or even to work at all) - and although I couldn't find PFC3BXL+DFC3CXL as an explicit example of such situation, a reload might be worth a shot if the downtime is not too much trouble...

  • Do I need my previous system folder?

    Hi guys,
I reinstalled OSX a month or so ago, but retained my 7GB "previous system" folder. Do I need it? Does my current system use it at all? Or can I erase it to reclaim some free space?
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Alec,
After an Archive and Install, the Previous Systems folder contains the prior OS X system. You will never be able to boot from this previous system folder, and therefore from that aspect it is completely useless. The Previous Systems folder may contain third party items, but when you are satisfied with the performance of your new system it is unlikely that anything of value will remain.
I got rid of mine after a couple of weeks. Be aware that the mere presence of this folder may lead to problems in the future.
This is what Apple says about the Previous System folder: You might wonder, "What do I do with the Previous System folder?" It may contain items that you need. To determine this, once you've finished configuring, installing, and updating your applications, compare the Previous System to the new System. If there are things in the Previous System folder that aren't in the new System folder, just copy them over. If you're not sure what some items are (and don't seem to need them), leave them in the Previous System folder. Once you're comfortable that you've got everything you need out of it, you can delete the Previous System folder (or leave it around if you're not low on disk space).;~)

  • Upload System folder to use Classic in OS 10.4.6?

Hello, I have recently upgraded my old iMacs (400MHz & 500 MHz) to OS 10.4.6 and they both seem to run fine, except one thing, they don't have Classic. I have Classic ablility on my iBook G4 which uses OS 10.3.7.
My question is there anyway to just download the "system folder" that Classic uses in my OS 10.3.7 and upload it onto both the computers in order to use CLassic?
This is important since I am going to by upgraded the two iBook to OS 10.4.6 and that would be great to have Classic without trying to install OS 9 then OS 10.4.6, to just use Classic, and that opens up another can of worms when trying to back up the new address book and emails, etc. But I hope there is a way. Help if you can, thanks.

I'm not sure if this is a "big discovery" or not but I actually did copy the system folder and applications (Mac OS 9) from my iBook G4 running OS 10.3.7 to my iMac G3 running OS 10.4.6. I buurned it onto a CD and to my amazement it works!
I went into Classic in preferences and it found the Macintosh HD (I had restarted a few times, while going through to each step)
I put the system folder and application of OS 9 in to the Macintosh HD just like they were on my iBook.
When it was in Classic and it found the folder, I started it up, it said something about needing to update the folder, and it wouldn't affect boot folder (or something of that nature), so I clicked OK and it started up and I was running Classic.
That is only the half of it. And I had called up a person in Tech Support at Apple earlier in the day and they told me I would need to "Install" off the original 2nd CD (additional software)and that would give me Classic. But I bypassed that and just took the folder from my iBook and put it onto OS 10.4.6.
    I restarted.
The whole reason for me doing this stuff with classic was to be able to use my mother's "Mail" application (Outlook Express 5.02) and get her emails and address book back with all of her "groupings" (she has like 10,000 email addresses).
So what I did from there was to get the copy I made of my mother's stuff (I had made a copy of Microsoft User Data, Contact Export, and the Mail application). I then proceeded to swap out the Microsoft User Data That I had on the new OS 10.4.6 with that folder from the OS 9.2.1 and put the old one in documents with the new one on the desktop.
I went to Classic in System Pref. and started it up.
I then went into the Identities folder in the Microsoft User Data (old one), Main Identity, then Messeges (outlook express file). Clicked on it and it said something like "rewriting strings" or something along those lines. It said something about starting up the email again and I ignored all of it because at this point I could see that I successfully got my mother's mail back in classic.
I looked and saw that her address book was there with all her groups. (I should note that I already knew the mail would work because I checked by uploading the same files/folders onto my iBook with Classic's help).
But now I had an operational mail off of my iBook and back onto my mother's computer.
I then decided to press my luck and see if the computer could boot off the OS 9 system folder. I went into Start Up Disk in System Pref. and sure enough OS 10.4.6 was there along with the new OS 9.2.2 system folder. Hmm, should I try it will it work? The guy online I think said it wouldn't work and the "pot-head" guy in Apple Tech Support (he did sound stoned) said I won't be able to do any of this. F*ck it.
    I restarted on OS 9.2.2.
It actually booted up and I was on the desktop and I went to see if I could actually use Outlook on this desktop and clicked on it, there was an erroe that said I needed to copy the identities folder from Users:my name: basically just get the identities folder, and move it to the outlook express folder. I did so by copying (option key).
I went back to the outlook express, clicked on it and started it up. It worked, it works, just like it did originally (I should note I already had the Mail set up in OS 10.4.6 to our ISP and it is a POP account, it was set up before I tried any of this). I sent myself an email to anotherr account and it worked.
I had talked on the phone with tech support people for at least a couple of hours, coming to the conclusion that I had improperly backed-up my data (emails, etc.) on both (my iMac G3 was running OS 10.2.8 and OS 9.2.1 before I zeroed and formatted it to OS 10.4.6) OS 10.2.8 and OS 9.2.1 and since I didn't have Classic in OS 10.4.6 I coudn't look and see what had and would have to reinstall from the original install CDs then upgrade to 9.2.2 and then "upgrade" to OS 10.4.6 to even have a chance of seeing what I had; and even though I told them what files I had they couldn't tell me if it was correct. My mother was freaking out on me, I won't go into details but she was extremely upset with me. I felt horrible I couldn't even load the stuff from OS 10.2.8.
I thought I had failed and resigned that it was lost. Then a couple of days later I thought "hmm, I see that my comp has Classic I wonder if it would work if I uplloaded it onto my comp" I found out that both of the back ups I made worked, and that I could import the stuff I had in OS 10.2.8 into my Mail (1.3.9) on OS 10.3.7 on my iBook G4.
I am absolutely ecstatic about the fact that Classic works beyond the bounds of what you guys and everyone else said. I would have wasted a lot of time reinstalling all the OSs onto the computers just to have CLassic and now that I'm upgrading four Macs in my house to OS 10.4.6, I can now have classic without absolutely taking HOURS to upload the installers and do damage control. But thanks to you guys who helped and actually I still need help with exporting and importing messages and exporting my address book in OS 9 but now it is easier and alleviates future problems with other systems (I think ). Thanks anyway.

  • After 10.5.3 update I have a "Previous Systems" folder (1976-04-01_0145)

After my terrible experience with the 10.5.3 update on Friday (and getting locked out of system, see thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1542395&tstart=0) I have my machine up and running again.
However, I've now discovered that I now have a 'Previous Systems' folder - which is essentially an ENTIRE system, with apps, utilities, etc. - on my machine and it is dated 1976-04-01_0145.
Because of this duplication I am barely able to run my machine as the startup drive is out of memory, all of my apps thing I've never used them before today, etc. . However, I am terrified of deleting one or the other of these two system folders.
I can't even properly backup as the scan takes FOREVER.
    Help! What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.

  • System extension cannot be used - rtl8187bl.kext

    hi,
sometimes when i use system update i get this error message:
title: system extension cannot be used
message: the system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/RTL8187Bl.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
i'm pretty sure its a driver for network device (ethernet or wifi), both of them works fine for me, and i have no idea how to update/reinstall drivers under MacOS.
    any idea/tip/guess can help,
    thank you.

    See the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • System Extension Cannot Be Used message pop-up

I just upgraded from an iMac power pc to a new iMac with snow leopard. I have an HP Photosmart B8850 printer and uninstalled the previous software driver and installed updated software. The problem is that I get a warning box with the message [ System Extension Cannot Be Used. The system extension “/system/Library/Extensions/hp/photosmartb8800series.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the products vendor for an update.] It appears that Library/Extensions is empty. The printer seems to be working properly. Do I need the system extension? If not, how can I keep the warning box from popping up?

If you are looking in /Library/Extensions for this file as your message seems to indicate, you are looking in the wrong place. Go to your Finder's Go menu and select *Go to Folder...* then type in /system/Library/Extensions
    Best of luck.

  • Blessing Cloned OS 9 System Folder

I have a strange problem. I cloned over my OS 9 drive to a larger hard drive. My original OS 9 drive will boot OS 9, but the clone drive will not. In my OSX System Preferences, Startup Disk sees it as a bootable OS, and the Classic Pane sees it as bootable for Classic Mode (I tested it, it works). But if I tell Startup Disk to start on the cloned OS 9, it won't do it. Instead, it will try booting, fail, then reboot using the original OS 9 volume. If I reboot while holding the Option Key, the cloned OS 9 volume does not appear.
I seem to remember using a repair utility piece of software once (when I'd cloned over the OS 9 from a previous drive) which came up with a message that it was blessing my OS 9 system folder, but I can't remember which software that was, it was so long ago.
I have gone into Terminal and typed:
    bless -folder9 "/Volumes/HD Volume/System Folder"
where "HD Volume" is my cloned volume name. No luck booting the cloned OS 9.
I have gone into the cloned OS 9 system folder and removed the Finder and System Files, closed the System Folder window, put those two files back into the System Folder. (It was something that several people seem to do when I googled "bless OS 9".) Still no luck.
I have tried simply copying the Finder and System files from the original to the clone on the desktop level. No luck.
Why is the OSX System Preferences able to see it as a bootable drive plus able to launch it in Classic Mode, but I can't boot from it? How can I make this cloned OS 9 boot?
BTW, the OS 9 version is 9.2.2, and I've not had any problems booting from the original OS 9 HD (nor any problems using that original OS HD for Classic Mode).

The 500GB is ultra-ATA. The reason I bought this machine was because it was going to be the last OS 9 bootable machine made. At the time, I had way too many OS 9 programs I still used a lot to trust Classic Mode to work.
I was messing around with iPartition instead of re-cloning/re-partitioning my drive. I created a 10GB partition with it (checking the checkbox that is supposed to make it OS 9-friendly) then dropped my wife's relatively new OS 9.2.2 System folder on it. Still didn't work! So then I tried fresh-installing it onto that new partition (in Classic Mode, of course, since I don't have a working 9.2.2 to boot in), starting with 9.0 then upgrading with on-disc upgraders I have. During my 9.2.1 upgrade, the "Installer Engine unexpectedly quit" before it finished! Ugh!!
Do you happen to know if the 9.2.2 install discs that are sometimes available on Ebay are machine-specific or even bootable? I was considering doing that to have a bootable 9.2.2 readily available just in case.
I still have to try the master/slave relationships you mentioned, but what strikes me odd is that my original OS 9 boot volume (which worked fine) was on the same configuration that it is now with everything being Cable Select (well, that is was before I switched drive docks around--I haven't put them back in their original spots yet. Though it seems unlikely, that could be a variable in this mess).
Beyond that, it seems my only other hope is to use the Software Restore discs that came with the machine. That's a pain because it will only restore to the boot drive, which would mean I'd have to install OS X onto that new partition in order to get OS 9 on it!!! I could just abandon the idea of having OS 9 on a separate partition and put it on my boot drive, but I think that volume is not <190GB (I'm not on that machine right now to re-check it).
I wouldn't even care about OS 9 at this point except there's a version of After Effects with certain plug-ins that I sometimes need, and that version is prone to crashing in Classic Mode.
Going to the beach today, so it may be either tonight or tomorrow that I even have a chance to mess with this again.

  • System Folder errors after I changed all permissions on HD to read & write

    Hi,
Two things may have caused probs on my new 2010 iMac (Snow Leopard), and Applecare is shut so I would really appreciate some help as I have urgent work.
    1) INCORRECT PERMISSIONS
I have been stupid. I clicked on Macintosh HD and changed all permissions to read & write because I wanted to be sure I could open and edit all documents on other computers.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions from the install disc, but I am still getting system error messages, and my HP printer won't work.
The first message, in Repair Permissions, said: Warning: SUID file System/Library/Cores has been modified and will not be repaired. I have read a support doc on this which says no need to worry but I don't like it and would like to fix this.
More importantly, my HP printer won't work, displays error beside the document in print dialogue box.
Deleting the printer and readding it didn't work, so I downloaded new drivers and tried to install them, which is when I got the second system error message: System extension System/Library/Extensions/BJUSBLoad.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact product's vendor for an update.
I checked the permissions on the file and they were still wrong despite Repair Permissions, allowing everyone to read & write. So I have now clicked on the entire System folder and changed the permissions to: System read & write, admin read only, everyone read only.
Will this fix it or do I need to do something else, such as check ownership, to make sure all permissions on the computer are now correct?
    2) MEMORY STICK SHUT DOWN MY IMAC
Additionally (though I don't think this had anything to do with my problems), I inserted a Sandisk USB memory stick the other day and it immediately shut down the computer. When I inserted it into my Macbook it initially rejected it and gave me a message saying the device wanted too much power so it had ejected it to prevent damage to my computer. When I tried again it was OK. I totally reformatted the stick in case there was something harmful on it, but should I now bin the stick as faulty? Scared to use it again.
    3) IS IT BEST TO REINSTALL ENTIRE SOFTWARE?
If I do a reinstall of all the software from the install disc, will it wipe out all my data, such as Mail, documents, bookmarks and other apps?
I would back-up, but if I try and back up files on my external drive it will automatically do a Time Machine back-up and I don't want to do that in case it backs-up all the corrupted files. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind starting again just to be sure all is well.
Expert advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Sarah

Oh, silly really. I was in a hurry and working on docs that I needed to take to the office and open on another computer there.
But when I checked the permissions on the doc it said I could read & write but everyone else was read only.
I thought if I opened it on another machine I'd be stuck with read only access and not be able to work on there. I think I couldn't change it, so I thought to avoid any future problems like that I would change everything on machine!
    Yikes. Won't do that again

    Hi,
I think some of the Microsoft runtime DLLs are missing, which you can observe in the above pasted log :-
    INFO 2008-09-07 20:26:01
    File not found: C:/DOCUME1/ADMINI1.SBA/LOCALS~1/Temp/2/sapinst_exe.1064.1220804594/msvcp71.dll.

Do have a look at snote Note 684106 - Microsoft runtime DLLs to drill more in to the issue.

I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

If the OS X 10.2 on the hard drive is/was bootable, try this -
Restart or boot, then immediately press the X key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to boot using OS X. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to boot using the first usable instance of OS X it finds.
Once booted to OS X, you should be able to move OS 9's System file into OS 9's System Folder.
Note - in general, unless you know for sure what you are doing and that the results are desired, do not relocate or rename files in OS 9's System Folder or in OS X's System or Library folders.

  • Modem: System Extension Cannot Be Used

I made an error attempting install the modem extension from my iMac into my iBook so I could connect at more than 28,800. Now I get the following message at startup: System Extension Cannot be Used. The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/Applel2ModemFamily.Kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. In Network Port Configurations, the modem is grayed out. I tried to reinstall OS 10.4.8, but problem remains.
Is there any way to reinstall just this one extension?
I saw mention of doing an Archive and reinstall of the OS in another post. If I do that, will I need to reinstall all other applications, such as Virtual PC. I don't want to risk making them all not work, but would like to get modem capacity back.
Currently I have dialup on my iMac being shared via Airport
    iBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.42 Ghz, 1.5 Gig RAM

…will I need to reinstall all other applications, such as Virtual PC
No. See http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/ for details, especially the one about A&I.

  • "system extension cannot be used" message upon startup

Ever since I upgraded OS 10.3.9 to Tiger on w/my newly purchased OS 10.4.6 from Apple, my 12" Powerbook G4 displays a yellow triangle containing an exclamation mark beside which is the message
    *System extension cannot be used.*
The system extension "/Library/Extensions/VirtualPCOSServices.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
I assume this refers to something about Virtual PC (which I no longer use) that I had on my hard drive before installing Tiger, and even though I've since upgraded to 10.4.10, the message continues to appear. Is there anything I can do before reinstalling 10.4.6, or is that indeed the best solution, and will that solve it?
Thanks in advance for any help out there. - Rick

If you are looking in /Library/Extensions for this file as your message seems to indicate, you are looking in the wrong place. Go to your Finder's Go menu and select *Go to Folder...* then type in /system/Library/Extensions
    Best of luck.

  • Message displayed: System extension cannot be used  The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Received following message during installation of an iTunes update today (9/16/14):  System extension cannot be used. The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.  What is to be done about it?

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not experienced in the inner workings of the iMac system and its programs, so please follow my train of thought as I try to find and understand your reply.
You wrote that I should check out "Please see - AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error on installing iTunes update" and I did so.
There I found your reply of 9/1014 7:06 PM to j'ski stating: "There is a larger thread here which you may want to follow - system extension cannot be used AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext ."
And an earlier Post by Greg Earle of 9/10/14 5:57 PM stating: " You would have been better off doing open /System/Library/Extensions and then finding the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext kernel extension icon in the Finder window that came up and moving it to the Trash."
And a subsequent Post on 9/15/14 at 2:59 PM by Rob Maurer stating: "This method worked perfectly for me.  I am on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. Dragged the kext file to trash (I use EasyFind. Found the file, Revealed in Finder, dragged to Trash, entered admin password when requested). Downloaded iTunes 11.4 from the website. Installed from that download. Checked for that kext file in EasyFind again and found it had a creation date of 7/29/14 (the trashed one had a creation date from 2009). No more error messages.  ITunes opens fine.  Everything good. Will not update on my MacBook Pro until they fix this issue.
All of which leave me wondering - what is your answer/recommendation?  Do I drag the kext file to trash, download iTunes 11.4 from the website and install it from that download, check for that kext file again to see if it has a later date than the initial one?  And, if so, seed if iTunes opens okay or not?  And if so, do not update iTunes again until Apple fixes whatever is wrong?
