Trashing sidebar preference plist in Lion?

Trying to find ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist in Lion so I can get rid of a rogue favorites folder that will not respond to drag-and-drop or right-click mouse command.
It appears there is no Library folder in the Users folder where this would normally be found, and the main Library folder doesn't have this plist file. Any ideas?

The ~/Library folder is now hidden.

  • Trashing Printing Preferences

I have a laptop that I print from wirelessly to my Epson 810. Once in a while, It won't print and the printer window says the printer is "offline". I usually have to trash my printing preferences plist and that solves the problem.
It did the same thing yesterday and I trashed the Printing Preference plist but this time it did not rebuild the preferences. I've even restarted the computer. It won't rebuild the printing preference and it won't print.
    Any ideas? thank you.

My name is Syd and I work for Epson America, Inc.
In your later post, clicking the add button does not see the printer at all on your wireless network? From this description the printer is dropping off the network. We would recommend trying powering the printer off for 1 minute and then power back on. Hopefully your router will re-identify the wireless printer and you should be able to add again. If this is does not resolve the issue or it continues to show offline status, we would recommend contacting Epson tech support via phone as there are many variable involved and they could help determine the issue more quickly.
    Hope this helps,
    Syd

  • PSE 13 crashes whenever I try to save a file.  It worked last week and no longer works.  I tried trashing the preference file.  That didn't fix the problem.

I installed PSE 13 three weeks ago.  It worked well for a while, then started to crash whenever I tried to save a file for the web.  I trashed the preferences.  That didn't seem to help.  PSE 11 still works well on my Mac, so I think it's a software problem.  I also ran the permissions repair on Disk Utility. I have Yosemite on a MacBook Pro with 4 GB of RAM.

I've not used Keynote 5.3 in OS 10.7.5 in quite some time, but I do know that in more current OS versions there is a Saved Application State folder in the Username/Library folder which can get corrupted/ messed up when an application crashes. The User Library folder, as I recall, is hidden in the Finder, but accessible by pressing and holding the Option key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder.
"com.apple.Keynote.savedState" is the folder, or perhaps file, you want to find and delete- making sure Keynote is not open at that time, which if it can't start without crashing will not be a problem.
This is a "trick" I've used with other applications that got stuck in a loop of trying to restore a pre-crash state, and obviously couldn't start as that state led to the crash. I do not see that savedState file for Keynote on my 10.9 computer, but that is where I would look.
    Good luck!

  • ICloud mail settings not saved in System Preferences on Mountain Lion

I note that iCloud mail settings not saved in System Preferences on Mountain Lion even if I tick mail in Icloud then close system preferences then open system preferences and it is untiked again?
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Cheers
    Paul

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    Just an FYI.....
When the history is cleared, the cache is cleared as well.  The favicons also go as a result of that process.

  • Is it possible to reinstall the System Preferences without reinstalling Lion?

My System Preferences application works fine, except for the Network panel.  When I try to start Network the system essentially hangs, i.e., I get the spinning color wheel and I can do very little else without large delays.  All other panels work as expected.  I have tried this many times through numerous reboots and power cycles.  the problem first appeared last Saturday when I plugged in an ethernet cable for the first time in several months; ethernet had previously work fine.  So, can I reinstall System Preferences without reinstalling Lion in its entirety?  I have a 2007 Macbook (white) that cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Yes, I did too the first time. These improvements creep up on us.
Stephanie, I just responded to another posting of yours with a Time Machine question. Multiple postings divert resources and you may end up with contradictory information.
An install from the (grey) 10.6 disk will not erase your data. However, if you are using a TM backup that will write over everything and current data will be lost.
As I understand your two posts, I suggest install the operating system from the 10.6 disk.
Copy what data you can to your external hard disk.
    Restore from the TM backup.
A restore from the Time Machine backup as I say will delete everything you have and replace it with the backup you select (depends on date). You can then transfer any files you copied to the hard disk if these are needed.

  • Networ Interfaces in preferences.plist

    Hi Community,
there are more than one network interfaces called "Ethernet 1" in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist with different settings. The interfaces seems to be handled by a unique Hex Code. Some of these interfaces are marked as inactive but there are two interfaces belonging to the same interface name "Ethernet 1" who aren't marked as inactive. They have different values in the NetBIOSName for example.
Which of these interfaces will be currently in use or what is the meaning of these multiple interfaces in that plist?
    Thx & Bye Tom

You'll have to search Secrets for such esoteric default settings. Alternatively, install Xcode Tools and use the supplied Property List Editor tool. As for remote management of computers, I suggest posting to an appropriate server product forum, such as Apple Remote Desktop. Your objective is more in the realm of server administration and not vanilla networking. Sorry, but that's about all I can provide.

  • Sometimes, trashing the Preferences is not enough!!!

    I have a new PC (i2600 K, windows 7, CS 5.5, two 24 inches screens – a dream machine…)
I installed CS 5.5 and I have noticed 3 or 4 days after that each time I switch from an application that is running too, Indesign always took around 10 seconds to regain focus. And that happens with all the software (Illustrator, CorelDraw, Word 2010, MathType, Photoshop, etc. (it was even happening from changing from the automatic windows scrensaver back to Indesign).
I was desesparated. Having to wait 10 seconds after changing a linkeg graphic drives anyone crasy as everybody can imagine.
I TRASHED THE PREFERENCES AND EVERYTHING WAS OK FOR AROUND 10 MINUTES AND THE PROBLEM STARTS AGAIN. After two days I have decided to uninstall CS 5.5, and cleaned everything with the Adobe Cleaning Script.
No way. My nightmare started again.
Next I formated the disk, reinstalled Windows and all the other software needed, started to work and everything OK. I have used ID during two days and everything OK.
    AND THEN…
I went to get my script collection that I have been collecting for some years (around 50 scripts – many of them coded by the nice guys of this forum) and transferred them to the respective ID folder and started to work again. After 10 minutes the problem happened again.
So the bottom line is this: if ID behaves erratically and trashing the preferences and all other stuff does not work try cleaning your script folder.
Did anyone ever see this behaviour in ID? Does anyone have an explanation?
    Best regards,
    Maria
PS. All my the scripts are nicelly arranged in folders by scope…

    No, Peter.
I always prefer to keep my computers the most simple thay is possible...
Tomorrow i will start to add my old scripts one by one to the right place to find the one that causes the problem...
Much of my scripts have long descriptive names....
    Thank you

  • TAKE HEED !  A/D Converter Problems Cured By Trashing The Preferences.

Recently my A/D Converter refused to allow me to capture analogue video in FCE.
It played back the FCE timeline onto my TV OK and iMovie of course worked perfectly with it.
I checked every possible setting on the converter and FCE over and over again. No plug or connector was left untouched.
    All to no avail.
Eventually I trashed the preferences and everything worked perfectly!
I frequently tell others to delete the preference files at the first sign of trouble. On this occasion I felt it was not appropriate.
A pity, as it could have saved me a couple of hours of hassle!
    Ian.

Great advice Ian. Think trashing the prefs on my 86 Chevette will get it to run like new, again? Nah, probably not ....

  • How to load/refresh default preference plists

    Hi guys,
I am facing the following problem at the moment: we got a couple iMac clients in a computer pool bound to an AD, which as a default disables the secondary mouse button on the AD user's account on first login.
So I came up with the idea of running a script on startup which basically runs the terminal command
    defaults write com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse Button2 -int 2
which works fine, but sadly it only takes effect after the next login. What it does is essentially manipulating the file com.apple.driver:AppleHIDMouse.plist in the user's Library/Preferences/ directory.
So I'm trying to figure out now how to reload this plist file to have it's changes take effect right away. Unfortunately the mechanics of these preference plists are not well documented.
Does anyone know how I can make the system reload defaults/preferences from this file?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jo

  • Trashing of preferences has become par for the course

I have noticed with disquiet the ever increasing recommendation of trashing preferences in this forum. Is this the "universal cure" for ever so many things now?
This is very cumbersome and annoying for anyone, even when following Peter Spier's much referred to post.
Trashing of preferences should really be necessary only very occasionally, if at all. InDesign seems to "corrupt" all too easily.
Why has InDesign become such a mimosa? CS5 in particular. This forum is rather full with myriad problems in CS5 which seem to have little to do with the users.
Too many things in CS5 don't seem to work as expected especially when migrating older documents. Or, things which used to work fine in CS3 or CS4, now cause problems. The answers to these problems are often quite flippant.
I have been following all things InDesign CS5 assiduously for a while now as our studio should be getting CS5 very shortly.
Many posts are not encouraging at all.
The power of inx also seems gone with the new procedure in CS5.
Is all this progress? Were the new features brought to maturity properly?

A lot of issues seem to come down to preferences becoming corrupt. It's been a long time since this fix has done anything for any of my misbehaving documents.
Of course when there are issues and things aren't working as well as expected the two main fixes are the IDML export and the trashing of preferences.
I have to admit though, both of these two fixes haven't done anything for me in a while.
Only yesterday, I had a document that I couldn't change the paragraph style to edit the point size of my body copy. InDesign kept crashing. If that happened to me and I wasn't sure how to fix I'd post on here. Sure there would be an echoed "Reset your preferences and do the export to IDML".
But neither of these worked for me. Turns out the Master Text frame was corrupt. Thankfully, I have enough experience to troubleshoot misbehaving documents. I was able to copy and paste my text into another document and continue working just fine.
Resetting preferences is a necessary evil; in that it removes a lot of the things you spent time setting up ever so carefully. As I had created many styles common to my line of work, Headings up to 5 levels, Body with bullets based on, numbered lists, lettered lists etc.
But not all was lost, as I have a template file with all these headings listed and the paragraph and character styles precreated, with the corporate style guide for colours also exported to an ASE file. I can easily load up a number of styles and colours back into my pallete. Along with saving my workspace and updating it regularly and saving that workspace file to a safe location if it ever needs to be.
So yeh, there are times when you'll have to reset your preferences, or export to IDML - but that's not the be all and end all of fixing documents. I can understand how some people become frustrated. But you have to remember the documents are just data, lines and lines of code. It's going to get corrupted from time to time.
Just as a particular computer game, that is very popular, regularly crashes and also can damage the saved data file. It happens in a lot of software, a lot of platforms and to a lot of people.
The IDML export and the Reset Preferences has always been there as a route to get out of sticky situations. But you have to remember that it may not be the case that this will fix your issue.
So as a port of call, it's recommended you follow those steps. But if it doesn't work then there's something more at play and it's a process of elimination to find the wonky bit of the document that is causing the crash or ill effects.

  • Trash Safari preferences

How do I trash my safari preferences? It refuses to launch and I think that may help. I'm also open to other ideas.
    Thanks in advance.

Trashing the preference file did not solve the problem. Going into the terminal did not solve the problem. Doing a custom install from the OS disc did not solve the problem. I did however create a new user account per your suggestion and safari did start to work. I then duplicated info from the user account with the corrupted Safari app, brought the preference files and app support ect. to the new account (but not any old Safari file) and deleted the old one. So far so good. I still wish I new why the old one stopped working.

  • Com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist

My Dad's Safari 5.1 keeps on wanting to open PDFs using the QuickTime plugin. If we remove com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist, and start Safari, it recreates the file with the PDF mime type set to true. If we manually change it to false, and start Safari, it no longer uses QuickTime to display the PDF, but some time later, the plist has changed back to true. So far we have not got to the bottom of why the plist keeps changing.
On my Macs, after removing the plist, when it gets recreated, it is false. I did a clean install on my Macs, whereas my Dad upgraded from Snow Leopard. I don't really want to tell him to clean install !

    Dez,
Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin solved all of my problems with PDF viewing in Safari.
It is a free plugin for non-commercial use.

Dashboard widgets not working. I trash the dashboard .plist and redo all widgets then after a restart. Widget not working again.

    Yes hello,
My widgets are not working as well, i looked on forms and it seams that the 10.5 update fix there problems. I also did an archive and install from 10.4... One of the major reasons i purchased the upgrade was to use widgets to clip parts of safari, i'am totaly bummed because all forums i find end with the question un answered. i'am a little bummed becuase there are a couple of things that worked with 10.4 that are not working in 10.5 (like some meg moives not playing.
i do not wish to create a new account because i do not want to reinstall all my software, photoshop, final cut, dvd studio pro.. etc.
i hope to find the fix some how.
I have opened up the console application and when i select widgets load or delete them i see no activity in the console. I'am not familiar with the console app. or command lines.
is there any more info on this matter? is there any support from apple?
