Trashing untrashable file

I have a user that has a file in his trash that we can't delete. I found a way to trash in OSX but OS9 doesn't have a terminal that I can find. Can you tell me how to delete a file that won't delete? His computer is a 350 mgh G3 PowerMac blue and white with 576 ram running OS 9.2.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
PowerMac G4 1.25GHz 80 gb hd 768 RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for ALL your input. I really appreciate it.
I tried all your suggestions. When I tried the Norton Wipe Info approach, I discovered that the folder is holding an invisible PC file (Thumbs.db) that must be locked. You see, we work in a printing company and we deal with PC files from time to time. There must've been an occasion where my user copied some PC file over to his HD that was locked. When he tried trashing it, it wouldn't go away. Now it's there and I can't get rid of it because I can't see the file by just opening the folder. Is there a way to see hidden files and folders on OS 9? Then do you suppose I can unlock the file on a Mac? I tried sharing the computer to our network and I don't know how to connect his computer because of password issues. That's a long story in itself. I was hoping that if I could share it, I would be able to see the folders on the PC we have and unlock the file and then delete. I can't move the folder to our network because it'll just make a copy of the folder and that's not accomplishing anything. Is there any answer to this problem?

  • Cannot trash a file

I have a .GZ file on my desktop that I cannot put in the trash. Everytime I try I get the message "the item is being used by another task right now. (other tasks include moving, copying, or emptying the trash.) Try again when the other task is complete."
The file was generated on the desktop when I started to download the latest Netscape browser software. I aborted the download. Now I am left with this untrashable file. Any suggestions anyone? It's been on my desktop for 3 days now...

Rename the file so that it ends in .rtf, and then open TextEdit. From here, create a new document and save it to your desktop with the same name as the unwanted file; confirm your action, and then throw away the TextEdit document.

  • I trashed a File and Can No Longer Connect

I trashed some file or something and now I can't connect to the internet. I have the 800MHz G4 (2.1) running OS 10.3.9. There was an icon of something mounted on my desktop that bugged me and I trashed it along with something or other else and lost connectivity.
What are the necessary files to have connectivity to the Internet? I was thinking I could download them on my other machine and load them onto the G4.
    Thanks
    Tom

Since you don’t know what files those were I would suggest that you do an Archive and Install to recover them. This will set aside your old system file and replace it with a new clean system file, while maintaining all of your other apps., data and docs. Clean and simple.
Follow the instructions here: Archive and install http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710.

  • Finder flashes, can't access trash, desktop files disappeared...

Running a fairly new iMac with 10.7.4 and came home to find that the finder flashes, I can't access the trash and the files on the desktop disappeared.  Haven't downloaded anything (and my kids also claim not to have).  Suggestions?

My fault they used to be called "Accounts" now "Users & Groups" in System Preferences.
Do that but then try this.... it really sounds like Finder prefs got wonky...
(if you can't do this in normal mode or if you're still in Safe Mode do it in Safe Mode)
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Why is my hard drive randomly trashing unselected files?

    Hey all,
I've noticed that everytime i plug in my hard drive, a selection of files end up in the trash, and these are files that i have not deleted. i made the mistake of emptying the trash and lost a whole lot of files from my hard drive.
when i unplug the hd the files are no longer in the trash, but when i plug it back in the trash is full. this is a problem because the files i do delete to free up the space on my hd seem  to end up in the trash with files that i havent deleted at all, and the only way to free up space on my hd is to empty the trash. how can i resolve this problem of making sure only the files i delete are in the trash and not importrant unselected files?? Help!

Why do you even think it needs defraginng, your iMac is not an old MS Windows machine?. Defragging HD's is a very antiquated and unneccessary thing to do. Even current MS Windows machines don't need it.

As I see it - it must be a New Feature to iMovie'13 (vers. 10.0.x) or does this work long back in time ?
To set iPhoto right - has been working for quite a while - but reg iMovie - Anyone knows ?
Any other program that can be cured this way ?

You need iDVD to make a video DVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • I created a partition on my iMac drive. I have trashed the files that were in the partition but I can not trash the icon. I tried with Disk Utility. Any ideas?

I created a partition on my iMac drive. I have trashed the files that were in the partition but I can not trash the icon. I tried with Disk Utility. Any ideas?

If I understand correctly,  the partition will still be on the disk and therefore mounted on the desktop. You would need to remove that partition to remove the icon.
Be careful if you try this, don't upset the main Macintosh HD partition or you may lose the OS and your files.
And always have a full tested backup of your system before modifing disk partitions.

  • TS2942 I want to delete a file off a thumb drive but get error 1407 which won't let me delete or trash the file.  What do I do?

I want to delete a file off a thumb drive but get error 1407 which won't let me delete or trash the file.  What do I do?

Hmmm, what Format is the Thumb drive?
    In the Mac/AFP world...
      errFSNotAFolder               = -1407, /* Expected a folder, got a file */
Is there perhaps a colon or Backslash, or slash in the filename?

  • Plase help :( Imac trash noise. It makes noises similar to trashing a file.

    I have a 20" imac w/ 1.8 processor and a gig of ram.
My imac keeps making this noise, similar to trashing a file, but the sound is continuous and DOES NOT stop unless I reboot. And most of the time, when i reboot during that time, it wont recognize the harddrive. Itll restart with a folder with a blinking question mark.
if i dont reboot, sooner or later, the system will crash.
the sound is NOT the fan. Nor is it a sound that suggest that the hardrive is spinning. it LITERRALLY sounds like the trash sound, but continuous and will not stop. Ive never seen anything like this. Please help
    Thank you in advance.

    Welcome Clockwurk;
I suggest you boot from the Additional Software disk that came with your iMac and run Hardware Test. It should tell you if there is anything wrong. When you run the test, your fans will ramp up to warp speed, but that's normal. Before you do that, make sure that you back up the contents of your drive to an external disk.
Please let us know your results,
    Miriam

  • Strange behavior in CS3 WinXP not fixed by trashing Prefs file

My doc has many objects on multiple layers. 85% of the objects are strokeless filled objects, filled with only 5 different colors. A small number of the objects are not showing the correct fill color when placed over other objects. They show the correct color when moved. All layers are "normal" transparency, 100% opacity.
Tried trashing prefs file but that didn't help. Any ideas?

They are probably set to over print which is an object setting that stays with the file. However you should only be able to see the effet if you have Overprint Preview on and trashing the preferences should setyou back to the default of not having Overprint Preview on.

  • How to trash a file without move it to the trash?

Hello everybody, I'm new on OS X world. I've a question about the trash procedure.
If I delete a file from USB pendrive (to increase free space) it is moved to the trash icon on the dock.
Until I don't empty the trash, the file still use pendrive space.
It is possible to delete a file without move it to the trash?
    Thanks in advance

It is, but only using a Unix command in the Terminal.  This is not a route that I like to recommend, as I've seen people mess up the command and do some real damage.
My first question is, why don't you want to empty the trash?  Note that you should not be storing anything in the trash that you are not ready to delete, for many reasons.  It's very easy to empty the trash without thinking about it, and nothing that is in the trash gets backed up by Time Machine (or most other backup software).  If you want a temporary repository for things you think are trash, make a folder on the desktop for that purpose.
Now, that said, if you still feel the need to do this and are willing to brave the wilds of the Terminal, type "rm" (without the quotes), add a space and drag the file onto the Terminal window.  Then hit return to execute the command.  That may not work for all files, since some files are actually folders in disguise and the "rm" command will not delete non-empty folders without some additional options.  In that case, you do "rm -rf" instead of just "rm"...  and hold onto your butt, since that command is extremely dangerous.  Mess up the file path you give that command and you could wipe your entire home folder or more.

  • When I move a file from the desktop to trash, the file only moves to the trash after I open the trash

So if I have a file on the desktop and I delete it, it makes the 'throwing it in the trash' sound but the trash can icon stays empty (if I don't already have something there) until I click on trash, and the file still appears to be on my desktop until I click the trash. If, after I've moved something to the trash, I then drag the file that seems to still be there around the desktop and drop it somewhere randomly, the file moves itself from the trash back onto the desktop! Can anyone help?
    Thanks, Dan

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have Time Machine setup to backup your hard drive? If so you can use it to recover the files.
If not you will need to use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. It lets you run the application to check the drive for files that can be recovered before having to purchase it. There are other similar applications out there also. You can go to VersionTracker.com and search for "file recovery" to get other possible apps.
There are recovery services that can do the job for you. They are pretty expensive but if you can't get the recovery application to work they are another option.
Try to use the computer as little as possible beforehand so you don't run the risk of overwriting the deleted files.
