Travel with Apple TV - Wireless Bridge?

I travel extensively and travel with Apple TV, MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad2. After losing about 10 Apple Remotes, I now try to use my iPhone or iPad as the remote to my Apple TV. In fact, it's better than the Apple Remote!
All is wonderful as long as the hotel uses ethernet to connect to the internet. If that's the case, I plug the ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro and create an ad hoc network to share the connection to the other devices, making them all on the same network.
If the hotel only has wireless connections, it only works for one device. I can share the wireless connection through my MacBook Pro, but then I can only plug in the Apple TV, thus not being able to use the Remote application for my iPhone or iPad.
I've been looking at Wireless Bridges. I asked at the Apple Store if the Airport Express or Extreme would work and was told it would not. Does anyone know if a wireless bridge would work? I would bridge the wireless connection to the ethernet port of my MacBook Pro, then share the ethernet back out wirelessly.
Suggestions/ideas?

There is only one account created on this computer, so that makes it the admin. account, right?
Even if your user account has admin privileges, apps don't run as administrator by default. You have to authorize it with your password for that to happen. If you right-click on the iTunes icon, there should be a "Run as Administrator" option in the popup menu.

  • Traveling with apple tv

We thought that we could travel with our apple tv so we could access Netflix.  We have been struggling to do make it work.  It keeps looking for our desk top.  Is there anything we can do?

What do you mean it is looking for your desktop?  The ATV doesn't care if a computer is accessible on the network or not.
Is the ATV active on the network?
If so, simply use the Netflix app on the ATV to stream whatever is desired from their catalog.

  • Travelling with Apple TV?

    Hello everyone,
I'm temporarily living in Australia for the next year or so, and I've brought over a UK purchased apple TV. I also have a UK registered iTunes account.
Everything seems to work OK except that streaming content purchased directly from iTunes is slow (e.g. 30-50 minutes before starting to watch a TV show or movie whereas this took roughly ~30 seconds at home).
If we take connectivity speeds out of the equation (I'm getting ~10Mbps) do any of the following factors affect the streaming rate?
Having a UK registered iTunes account - in this case do I convert the iTunes account to Australia (and does this have any other implications?)
Change the settings on my modem/router to use a different DNS
    Other - all suggestions welcomed!
What other experiences are out there - this can't be an uncommon scenario for people out and about on business travel/holidays etc etc.
    Thanks!
PS this is last years apple tv model.

    Thanks, tzbikowski
I didn't realize that the USB was only for servicing. Curious.
Optical likely isn't an option for the stereo, unless I found some sort of optical-input DAC, which I don't currently have. (I can now go USB to HagUSB for S/PDIF input to my Resolution Audio DAC, or AirTunes via Airport Express analog to standard inputs on the pre-amp.)
My idea was to be able to view, say, concert videos on/with the Apple TV, with the sound coming out on the stereo. I have a 5.1 setup for the TV, but the stereo rig sound sooo much better.

  • Connecting printer with a wireless bridge

I have an airport extreme base station. I am trying to connect a HP Photosmart 3200 printer. It has built in networking and I have a motorola wireless bridge to plug it into. What do I need to do? The tech at motorola said to see the range of the router ip addresses and to see if it was compatible with a DHCP wireless bridge. We did connect the bridge to my laptop and gave it the webkey. She wanted to assign it an IP address, but I wasn't sure it needed one. There is already a printer plugged into the USB and the printer does work with both my mac and wireless toshiba laptop when connected with a USB cable. TIA

You need to do two things.
Configure the Motorola Wireless Bridge to connect to your wireless network.
And then by connecting the printer to the bridge you need to configure the PhotoSmart 3200 to join your network.

  • Will USB mobile broadband work with Apple TV?

I am considering to get USB modem so I can use the apple TV anywhere. But I have not purchase the USB modem yet. Click below for more info on USB modem:-
    http://threestore.three.co.uk/broadband/
I was thinking - USB modem is to be connected to my laptop (via USB port), Apple TV is to be connected to my laptop (via ethernet cable).
The questions are when I switch Apple TV on:-
    1. Will Apple TV automatically find the internet?
    2. Will the USB mobile Broadband work with Apple TV (Wireless via my computer)?
    Please advise.

I'm sure it should be someone answering this question who has actually tried this, but given that the tv is not overly portable I'm not sure you will find too many who have.
FWIW, you can use an tv with a direct ethernet connection or ad hoc wifi network between the computer and the tv, so I don't see why a mobile account rather than a static one should make any difference. You would need to set up internet sharing and all that, but my guess is it should work for you. Be aware though, I haven't actually tried this.

  • Setting up a netgear n300 as wireless bridge/access point with airport extremee

I just replaced my netgear wireless router with the airport to allow our many devices on the network without knocking each other off and also increase the speed.  But would like to use the netgear as a wireless bridge or access point so that I can still connect my NTFS formatted hard drive to be shared on the network.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I can not seem to find my netgear router with 192.168.1.1 as that comes up with another device.  I have tried doing this with a windows laptop in another room but can not seem to make it work.  I am now hooked up directly to the airport thinking i need to do it that way and still no luck. Please help.

As long as you intend to do this over ethernet it will work.. you cannot easily wireless repeat or bridge to an apple router.. you would need specific hardware to do it.
What is the exact model of netgear you have?
The setup method depends on the functionality of the router.. but lets assume it does not have a bridge or WAP mode.
    You use WAN bypass.
    1. Setup the Netgear with IP address in the correct IP range for the rest of the network.. it is hard to talk generalities so lets say the apple is main router and your network is now 10.0.1.x .. then set the Netgear to 10.0.1.250 (apple uses IP 2-200 by default) you can use any value you like outside the DHCP range. Up to the limit which is 254 as long as you keep track of all static IP devices. Apply this setting and power cycle the router.. and you might need to power cycle the computer as well to pick up the new IP.
    2. Turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear. You may lose connection to the netgear now.. do not worry about it.. (this can be combined with one.. if you firstly turn off dhcp before you change the IP.. but whatever is possible.. at some point you will need to change around and if you forget what IP .. you will be in a mess.. so write it on a label and stick on the base of the router.. also without dhcp you will either need to reset router to factory using reset button or use static ip on the computer. )
    3. Plug ethernet from LAN of the main router to LAN of the Netgear. Reboot the whole network is often necessary.
    4. In your computer plugged somewhere in the network.. open browser and go to the address you set.. 10.0.1.250 in my example.
    5. You can then setup the Netgear to do whatever you like.. DIsk access is fine.. wireless is fine.. it just cannot be a router.
Many many reboots if you get lost. Hit reset and start over.

  • Problems with wireless bridge

I have an iMac, and I'm using its built in Airport function to share the internet connection with various devices.
I just purchased a WET610N for use with my DirectTv HD DVR which isn't wifi enabled. I took everything out of the box, put the CD into the computer and started the configuration process.
I hit a snag right off. I can't physically plug the WET610N into anything to configure it. The instructions say to plug the wireless bridge into one of the spare ethernet ports in your router.  The iMac only has one ethernet port, the one that runs from my DSL modem into the iMac.
My DSL modem only has one ethernet port too.
The DVR can't see the bridge when it scans for it. The instructions say that it needs to be configured for my network before it can be seen by any devices. I'm at a loss as to how to get this up and working. But, I figure that someone out there has done this before.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

    David Skoglund wrote:
I did. None of their instructions deal with using the built in Airport fuction. They all assume you've got an external router with multiple ethernet ports.
This is why I'm asking on the Apple boards.
I see, I'd recommend using a router instead. While an iMac can act as a router not many users try this route so finding someone that knows the ins and outs of how to set it up might be slim. You can also try posting on the Snow Leopard forums, perhaps someone there may know.
However if I were you I would simply get a router.

  • Does Bridge Mode Work only with Apple Router?

Can I use an Airport Extreme Router, in Bridge Mode, as a wireless bridge in a network that does not use an Apple Router?
Situation:  Wifi Hotspot from Smartphone connects to Dlink Wireless Bridge in other room allowing Wifi access to printers having only Hard-Wired Ethernet connections.  Trying to do the same with an Airport Extreme, with same network name and password, in bridge mode, to provide a PC internet access through the Ethernet connection to Airport Extreme.  Cannot seem to get the Airport Extreme in Bridge Mode to function as a wireless bridge on this network.

Are both of your AirPort Extreme models the "ac" version?
So Base Station (2) would be set to bridge mode, hard wired to Station (1).  Base Station (2) - I believe in this configuration will broadcast the wireless signal from Station (1), the router, with all DHCP addressing handled by Station (1).
No, Base Station 2 would not broadcast the wireless signal from Base Station 1. Base Station 2 would broadcast its own wireless signal, which it derives from the Ethernet connection coming from Base Station 1.
You don't have to worry about "bridge mode" if you use Apple's "wizard" to set things up in AirPort Utility.
If the wireless on Base 2 is configured to use the same wireless network name and password as Base 1, then Base 2 will act like an "extender", and it will seem as if you have one "big" network. This type of setup is called a Roaming Network.
Base Station 2 would only broadcast the wireless signal from Base 1....IF....Base 2 was connecting using wireless. But, you changed the question to ask about Base 1 and Base 2 connecting using Ethernet.

  • Need Help With Wireless Bridging

Hello all, I have recently perchased high speed WiFi for my house so I could do some gaming on my Xbox. Problem is my roommate, who is a tech support professional, set the modem up in his bedroom, my Xbox is old and requires a wireless adapter to pick up signals but since the modem is so far away from it it barely recieves the signal. So currently I'm paying for nothing so I confronted him about this issue and he attempted to fix it by wirelessly bridging a router to the modem but after a month he hasn't succeeded and has given up so now it's up to me and I have no clue where to even begin. The modem we have is a Cisco DPC3825 and the router is a NetGear Wireless-N Router WVR2000 V2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Denver: I did not actually understand what kind of bridging you want to do?
The modem already has a wireless transmitter. I think you mean the router is picking up the wireless signal and provide the xbox with connectivity via wired cable. is that right?
If correct, It looks like the issue is with the distance/barriers between your modem and router. You need to try to eliminate some barriers in between to get better signl. Try also to put the devices as close as possible to each other.

  • Is there ANY wireless mouse that will work with the iPad 2 and Apple's Wireless Keyboard?

I have the iPad 2 and Apple's Wireless Keyboard and would like to purchase a wireless mouse that will accommodate my Apple products. I do understand that Apple's Magic Mouse is not compatible with the iPad 2, but would like to hear if there is any possibility that i could use a wireless mouse with my iPad.
      Thanks :)

You don't have to purchase a mouse. You already have one, it's wireless and the only one that will work on an iPad.

  • I already have a wireless BT router but still I need an airplay together with apple TV?

I would like to buy apple TV. As I already have a wireless BT router Do I still need to purchase an airplay together with apple TV?

The router does not need to support AirPlay. It doesn't get involved. AirPlay is just a protocol that both end-devices (e.g., the Apple TV and an iPad) have to support. All the router sees is IP packets addressed to one or the other. The router does not get involved in the AirPlay protocol.

  • HT5633 Wireless keyboard with Apple TV Box

I think it does fully support wireless keyboard, but only for English.  As Apple tells you in the link I gave you earlier:  "Apple TV uses the U.S. English keyboard layout regardless of the keyboard's hardware layout"
Hopefully they will fix it in the future.

  • HT5439 Has anyone had the Network time and date error with Apple TV when traveling?

Has anyone had the Network time and date error with Apple TV when traveling?

    Jasion,
Maybe a bit beside the question, but it is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • Trouble with wireless bridge......

I am having extreme difficulty setting up Cisco Aironet 1310 series devices. here is an overview:
We have our main network with an ip scheme of 10.1.1.0/24 on one side and an office across the street that is on 10.1.2.0/24.
I want to connect these 2 networks via wireless bridge. We do have a PTP T1 between the 2 sites that is used to carry VoIP traffic and data, but I want the data moved to the wirless bridges.
I put the bridges on their own network of 192.168.1.0/28 and I am using 2 switches with their own VLANS on the same network as the bridges.
No matter what I try, I can't get traffic to flow properly.
does anyone have any suggestions or can they point me in the right direction. It is driving me crazy!
thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the response.
AP's are running in "root" and "non-root" mode and they are able to talk to each other ok. Just can't get the traffic to flow from point A to B (the main network, through the wireless bridges, over to the remote network and back again), then back from B to A. The traffic either loops or bounces back and forth between the firewall and the switches. I suspect I need t tweak the gateways on each of AP's as well.
Right now, the gateways are set to point to the VLAN set on the switch of the opposite side. This way, traffic hits the AP and is forwarded through to the opposite VLAN.
I am using seperate VLAN's to seperate the traffic but have not tried to associate with a specific SSID as of yet.
