Traveling-do I need a dial up?

We have a network at home that allows me to access the internet. I am traveling to a location without wireless access/network and would like to be able to access the internet and check email (I use entourage). Forgive the silly question but do I need to set up a dial up account? If so- how do I do this? Are there ways to get a temporary dial up account? Thanks.

Depends where you are travelling to. I suppose you have built in airport in your ibook. I have travelled through a lot of countries and used the net via that means, lots of airports/cafes/hotels have open networks set up for this purpose. So if you just need it for mails etc, just pop into a cafe for a coffee and a surf. Hope that helps...

what is the charging procedure for european travel? do  need to use a converter or just an adapter?

The only thing would be an adapter, for example World Travel Adapter Kit from the Apple Store.
The power supply will accept the 240V input in Europe.

  • Need a dial up modem for G3 Beige Tower

I have an ethernet card for my G3 Beige Tower but I need a dial up modem so I can hook it up for my mom. Anyone know where I can get one? Milwaukee

The internal 56K Apple/GV modem card that was a Build-to-Order option for the beige G3s offers the convenience of no additional desktop clutter, no extra power supply to bother with, and nothing to turn ON/OFF. It plugs into the brown slot on the audio or A/V personality card. You can see one listed on this page, but the $99.77 price tag is absurd, in spite of its scarcity now. When I stopped buying them a few years ago, used ones could be purchased for about $35. The internal 56K modem card functioned identically as its external Global Village 56K counterpart. If you have the time to keep checking eBay, you may find an internal Apple/GV 56K card eventually show up for auction. Just be sure that it matches the photo shown on the page I linked. Some sellers (mistakenly or not) identify the software-based "Apple GeoPort" modem card as the 56K modem card - which it definitely isn't. For a reliable 56K external modem, the US Robotics 56K v.90/x2 (model 5689-03) was always my choice for the internet and downloads. The Global Village TelePort 56K v.90 external modems with attached modem cable are also a good choice for the beige G3s. These modems are discontinued, but you can find them showing up at eBay or thrift stores. The current US Robotics v.92 external modem (black color and marketed for PCs) can be used with your beige, but (as Jan wrote) you'll need to find a Mac modem cable (DB-25 to mini-DIN8) for it. Additionally, a custom INIT string must be used to disable a couple of unsupported v.92 features, in order for it to function properly. After much trial and error, I arrived at one that did the trick.

i want to use my phone whilest away traveling. do i need to get my phone unlocked, if so how do i?

You can either use your carrier's international roaming plan, or if you have an unlocked phone, you can use local SIM cards from any compatible GSM carrier. If your phone is locked, you will need to contact your carrier to inquire as to the requirements and fees to have it unlocked. Not all carriers offer unlocking.

I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN software? And is it needed at the receiving end?

As long as you only enter your password in secure web forms, connect to secure mail servers, and don't mind if a stranger is watching which Internet servers you connect to (but can't see what you do with them), a VPN isn't necessary.

Unless you live in the country and have a credit card with a billing address in the country-you don't.

  • Need to dial 5 extensions at the same time in case of emergency

Hi, our company uses Communications Manager 8.6.2 and has a requirement which I haven't been able to fill using normal methods.
We need to call 5 mobile numbers at the same time when an emergency exists at our location.  Only one of the 5 called numbers has to respond to the call for help in our 3 km long, 2 kilometer wide company site.
Thought 1 line number with remote destinations would work but this doesn't seem to handle multiple mobile numbers well. Strangely, it doesn't ring all lines at the same time. It will ring max 2 mobile phones at the same time in our test. There were enough free lines on the PMX to dial out to all phones during the test period.
Doesn anyone have this situation and how did you handle it?
    Thanks,
    Randy

Hi,  Thanks for the quick responce,  unfortunately we dont have contact center installed. Actually we would like one DN number for these 5 people, because these people are continually moving around their respective areas, there is no physical local endpoint.
When the number is dialed it should ring out to the 5 mobile numbers, when one answers the others should stop ringing.
We could in theory install the uccx solution but this will cost some time to get up and running and at present we do not have any additional need for uccx.

  • Overseas Travel - do I need a power converter or not?

I've got a MacBook Pro from just before the unibody models. I'm going to Germany at the end of this month and need to know: Will my Apple branded Magsafe battery charger work with a European plug adapter or do I need to buy a power converter to step the voltage down from 240 to 110v?

    Scott:
Your computer is equipped with dual voltage and your power supply will be fine. I suggest you get an adapter for the plug before you leave the US. I searched all over London once before finding one in a little hardware store (and ancient one at that).

  • UK iphone user - travel adapter advice needed

    Hi,
We're heading off to Mexico shortly from the UK for a two week vacation. Since I intend to take my iPhone 3G with us for emergency use and to take advantage of the free wireless in the hotel (with data roaming switched off), I need some guidance re: charging the phone.
I realise that Mexico use US style plugs and voltage - will a travel adapter alone be sufficient, or will this fry my UK iPhone 3G phone. Would a step down converter be necessary?
The only other appliances I'll be taking are a dual-voltage hairdryer (so not an issue), and a Panasonic TZ5 camera and I need to check about whether a travel adapter is sufficient for the camera battery charger as well.

Yes, your iPhone charge can work just about anywhere.
Personally I use the Power Monkey Explorer (http://www.powertraveller.co.uk/) for travelling. Main reason is that it includes a battery pack that can charge the phone when mains is not available (can recharge the phone twice on a full charge) and the power adaptor to recharge the battery can also be used to recharge the iPhone directly (as well as a load of other items). The main drawback is it costs, cheapest place I have found so far is www.scan.co.uk

  • Preparing to travel with LR -- Need Help

Have clone/copied all my LR files (catalog, etc. and photo files) from the external drive on which they regularly reside onto a smaller, traveling HD. But iin opening LR from that Traveling Drive, I am faced with all those frustrating question marks signifiying missing or offline files. Trying to have the program find the missing files has been unavailing. What should I have done and what do I need to do? Would greatly appreciate someone walking me through this.
    Thanks.
    jack

If the copy indeed follows the original, you should be able to connect up the top level folder, by showing LR the new path where said folder now resides. Control or Alt click on it to bring up the dialog.

I travel a lot.  I frequently need to access my work computer. Our system is windows based.  Do I need to run windows in the back ground?  What is the best way to accomplish this or should I just buy a windows based ultra book?
    Thanks for your help

What are you using to write to Excel files? (Tab-delimited file with .xls extension?)
Are you using "Get Date/Time in Seconds.vi"?

  • Need to dial a phone number from Cold Fusion

My boss asked me if there was any way that a phone number
could be dialed from Cold Fusion. We have a website where at some
point we want to just click a button and dial that phone number. My
guess is that the conversation will then be carried through the
computer's microphone and speakers and using the computer's modem.
Let me know if there is a way, or what would be the easiest
way to accomplish this, even if it has to be using VOIP, since
that's an option for this project.
    Thanks!

Is this an internal site or an public-facing site? If you are
talking about using this tool in your intranet and you have a
modern phone system in place, there may be an API to interfacing
with your phone system. We use a TAPI interface to create a phone
dialer so our callcenter agents can dial a phone number on their
phone just by clicking on a link. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch
of freeware/shareware TAPI COM objects you can use floating around
the interwebs (If your phone system supports TAPI).
If you are talking about a public-facing website, then I'm
afraid I can't offer much advice other than to check out the Java
Communications lead that Ted gave you.

  • I AM PRESENTLY CONSIDERING A NEW TRAVEL CAMERA. NEED SUGGESTIONS ON IT

I AM CONSIDERING A NEW CAMERA FOR TRAVEL I PREFER TO CARRY A SMALL COMPACT ONE THAT HAS AS WIDE A RANGE OF ABILITIES AS POSSIBLE.  YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL OCCUR. Ii HAVE TRAVELED WITH A LOT OF LENSES WITH ME AND I FIND THAT I ENJOY THE TRIP MORE IF I KEEP IT LIGHT.  I NEVER CARRIED MUCH ABOUT MOVIES BUT LATELY I HAVE TAKE UP AN INTEREST IN SHOOTING CLIPS. I WANT 1080 CAPABILITIES IN MY NEW CAMERA.. The MOST INFORMANT THING TO ME WOULD BE LENS QUALITY AND THE MATCH OF ZOOM LENS TO M.  PROBABLY ABOUT 16M  BUT 14 COULD WORK.  I  DEFINITELY WANT A SUPERIOR LENS IS OF THE UTMOST CONCERN TO ME.

I suggested this camera to another forum member only moments ago:
Check out the new Canon Digital Elph 110 Hs 16.1 MP. It's not the best over 200 ISO, and it's a bit noisy mechanically speaking, but it's got all the latest Canon goodies. It takes full HD video as good as some moderately priced HD camcorders did only a couple of years ago. My friend, a professional photographer and filmaker, owns one and he uses it when traveling. I've used it and loved it so much I ordered one for my self. I was amazed at the performance and userfriendlyness inherent in this tiny 135g pocket camera. I've seen it listed for as low as $129 from several vendors. The Canon PowerShot Elph 320 HS 16.1 MP is a step up and works better at higher ISO ranges (a lot less noise in the 400 to 800 settings), but it pretty much the same camera in specifications and performance---at twice the price!

  • Need second dial tone after dialing 9

Hello, I am trying to configure CCM so when user picks up his phone and dials 9 he is provided with a second dial tone. Usually this is a feature provided by the local PBX but I wanted to know if I can do this on the CCM.

    Hi Farid,
    Check your 9@ Route Patterns for this setting;
    Provide Outside Dial Tone
Check this check box to provide outside dial tone. To route the call in the network, leave the check box unchecked.
    From this CCM 4.1.3 doc;
