Traveling to Europe/India - How to use iPhone 4?

Hey everyone!
I searched the forum but could not find relevant information.
I have an iPhone 4, and traveling abroad for a month or two. I heard that I need to Jailbreak it, then install ultrasn0w to unlock the phone.
Then when in India, I know there are no MicroSIM available so I need to use a simcutter - would that work? Which carrier is the best to go with? Pre-Paid? How much should I spend (Europe or India)? Is that all? Will data work? Please advise. Thank you for your help and time!

So you are willing to bypass all the security on the phone, void your warranty and mutilate a SIM card just to get your phone to work there?
Well first we cannot help you with jailbreaking options as that topic is against the TOS of this site.
Think it would just be easier to get a Pay as You go phone when you get there and use iPhone in WiFi only mode. Can usually find one right at the airport after landing.

Apple power supplies are made to use from 110 to 230 volts without any converter required
You will need adapters to get the pins to fit the wall sockets but that is it

If you got the phone from Softbank in Japan the phone will work in Singapore but only roaming with Softbanks sim. They do not unlock iphones bought from them.

Because it behaves differently depending on whether the phone is locked (in standby) or unlocked (in use) when the call comes in.

There are no officially unlocked iPhones sold in Japan & none of the Japanese carriers...which include Softbank...offer official unlocking for the iPhone. I'm from the US, and there has been no alternative because Apple doesn't want people to be able to tether on the iPhone just yet. Apparently they will be releasing tethering to iPhone users here soon, but Apple took Netshare down because of that fact.
Now I don't know if there is anything else available in Paris, but you might want to contact Apple or your cell carrier and ask them, they would have a better idea about it.

Hello, I was wondering if there's any app/workaround on how to make iPhone act like a regular USB Flash Disk... just like Blackberry which allows itself as Data Storage...

Using an external drive is one option. What did you use to backup the important data on your Windows PC?
Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform but even more important with Windoze due to constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.
An Apple store can help you with this along with helping you with backup options for your Mac.

I will only answer here, not to the email address you gave. Also not good to give serialnumbers, imeinumbers here....
The phone was probably not unlocked. Or maybe hacked and it will be locked again after an update.
If the phone was not unlocked officially, you have to go to the provider in the UK, where it was used before, because only the provider-it-was-locked-to, can unlock it.
If it was jailbroken/hacked I do not know what to do.

So this is actually for a friend who has an iPhone 4S and is going to Amsterdam this summer. She wants to bring her iPhone to use it for reading preloaded eBooks and listen to her music. Now she is TERRIFIED of incurring international data charges. She wants a foolproof method to disable it's service without using Airplane Mode. She is afraid she will be out drinking one night and accidentally turn Airplane Mode off or restart her phone and it's turned off as it powers up and as her apps update she goes bankrupt. She also still wants to be able to use WiFi when she is out there.
Now I was thinking she could replace her activated SIM card with an unactivated one from AT&T (her carrier). I am just concerned about a couple things.
First since the iPhone is activated will it freak out on her when she inserts this unactivated SIM card.
Second will she have to restore it before inserting the SIM card?
Third will she be able to connect it to iTunes to add music or perform a restore if something should happen to it out there?
Or if the SIM card trick is a no-go, what other ways are there to foolproof deactivate her phone?
Any help or ideas you could give me to pass along to her would be great. She was actually on her way to buy a new ipod and an ereader when she told me and I stopped her in her tracks. I had a European buddy come HERE and buy an unactivated iPhone and wanted to use it as an iPod and we did this SIM card trick but I don't know if it translates to Activated to Unactivated.

Just take out the sim card. If the iPhone is unlocked, she won't have to worry about charges.
