Traveling to the UK - GSM/CDMA Confusion

Everything I've read online tells me that the Droid Bionic isn't capable of using the GSM network in the UK (where I am traveling). This includes the VZW Trip Planner, which tells me my phone won't work in the UK. However, when I called Verizon's Global Services, the representative I spoke with told me that my phone would indeed work. I'd like to get this figured out before my trip as it's one less thing to worry about while there. Was she mistaken, or has something changed? Thanks for any insight you can provide...

I'm surprised someone at VZW Global Services told you a CDMA phone would work in the UK. In general, Verizon's phones don't work on GSM networks. I don't know anything specifically about the Bionic, though. Perhaps it could get EVDO service in the UK?
I recently traveled to the UK, and found it very easy to use Verizon's global services, which will basically give you a loaner to use while you're out of the country. It looks like you've found them already. What they will do is send you a replacement phone to use on your trip. You can activate it before you leave (which will deactivate the Bionic) and sync your contacts and calendar, either with Backup Assistant or via Google. When you get back, you just reactivate the Bionic and send back the loaner (FedEx prepaid by VZW).
They'll charge you about $20 to ship the global-usable phone back and forth. To my surprise, after I'd been back for a week or two I got an e-mail saying they were then refunding the $20! You'll need to look into signing up for a global voice plan and a global data plan, whose monthly fees are prorated for the actual time you have them on your account. The global voice plan will bring the cost of calls down from $1.29 to $.99/minute, still not cheap, but texts are fairly inexpensive.
On the whole I found this to be a pretty simple process, and the Global Services people I spoke with were knowledgeable. The only downside was that at the relatively late date I called to reserve my phone, they had no Androids available and I had to take a Blackberry. You should definitely contact them again, and if they still say the Bionic will work in the UK, nail down the exact details of what kind of network it will connect to and how speedy the data service will be. It won't be 4G, I guarantee. The Blackberry got 3G most of the time, but I will say that it was surprisingly spotty for being in the middle of London.

Hey Guys I Travel to the States and I am from Germany. I want to buy an iPhone 4S 8GB white Version unlocked GSM. Can I use the iPhone in Germany with every SIM Card?

As long as you buy from an Apple retail Store (Apple owned ) an unlocked iPhone 4S it will work on GSM services worldwide
    from Apple.com
If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible micro-SIM separately. When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4s from a local GSM carrier.
The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
However the warranty will NOT be valid outside the US .If you need warranty or post warranty service you will have to return the iPhone to the US in person ( cannot mail in to US )

  • What is the best  Gsm or cdma iphone5 ?

what is the best  Gsm or cdma iphone5 ?

All iPhones (with the exception of the iPhone 4 CDMA) will work on any GSM network worldwide as long as the device is unlocked.
LTE coverage is limited by the carriers roll-out and the model of iPhone. The A1428 is designed to use the LTE bands used by North American GSM carriers.  The A1429 utilizes the LTE bands used in the rest of the world.

  • GSM & CDMA and the unlocked 4s - Technical or Business based limitation?

So there are many threads about the GSM & CDMA with CDMA only being available on a locked phone and that GSM roaming is at the indulgence on the carrier. I am in Canada so the carrier choices would be different.
My question is whether this is a technical limitation or based (presumably at the request of Verizon in the US) on official CDMA carriers not wanting the 4S to be used on different networks? Will an unlocked 4S never be able to have CDMA enabled or is there no legitimate way to do it? (I am not looking for "sure someone will be able to jailbreak it and turn it on" - though I guess this would answer the technical question, more along the lines of if 6 months down the CDMA is no longer officially locked but you bought your unlocked phone too soon, too bad or you.)
As for why I am asking: I need to wade through Canadian carriers and their plans and figure out which way to go if I get a 4S.

Existing GSM iPhones will not work on CDMA networks because they don't have the right type of cellular radio. It doesn't matter if they're locked or unlocked. It would be like trying to get an FM signal on an AM only radio. It's just not possible.
The iPhone 4S has both CDMA and GSM capabilities. CDMA phones are not locked in the same way that GSM phones are. But, technical details aside, Sprint phones will not work on Verizon's network and vice versa. It's not clear, to me at least, how this will all play out with the 4S.
AT&T has only ever sold locked iPhones which they won't unlock. I haven't heard that they plan on doing any differently. The unlocked GSM iPhones that you can buy at the Apple Store can use any GSM SIM.
So if I'm a Verizon iPhone 4S user, would I be able to use the 4S if I went to Ukraine and bought a SIM card from an MTS store for their network?

  • A1429 GSM or GSM+CDMA

    Hi,
I'm from Indonesia and I bought an iPhone 5 about nine months ago. The seller said that this phone A1429 GSM model. But yesterday I updated my iPhone manually download the firmware "iPhone5,1_7.0.2_11A501_Restore.ispw" which they said it for GSM only.
But after I download those firmware and try to update my phone, itunes reject the firm ware and said "the firmware is not compatible with this model".
I do some research and I tried to download "iPhone5,2_7.0.2_11A501_Restore.ispw" (GSM+CDMA) model and it works to update my phone.
I'm wondering which model that my iPhone 5 have? it is all iPhone 5 A1429 in SouthEast Asia (especially in Indonesia) use GSM+CDMA firmware to update it? or they just gave me the GSM+CDMA iPhone 5?
Why did Apple made the same model number A1429 with different hardware.. This is so confusing...
In my country doesn't have 4G LTE network yet, but I didn't planning to change my phone in 2 years from now. I just want to make sure that my phone do have 4G LTE network..
    Thanks..

1 A USA iphone will not be covered by warranty outside US .The warranty is NOT international
If you are not concerned by this any fault will require you taking it back to the US for service ,warranty or post warranty .
    2. The European version is the A1429GSM model not sold in US ad the US models will not work on LTE outside NA despite some  commonality of bands .The bands apparently have to be the same set
    3. An unlocked A1428 GSM will work on 3G ( not a sim free  but must be a non carrier locked from Apple )
4 A1429 CDMA will work if the sim slot is not locked by the US CDMA Carrier on 3G in Europe with a local sim
Note there is NO CDMA in Europe it is all GSM

  • I am travelling to the Philippines next week and I have been told my iphone and ipad chargers will work with the 220v there.  Do I need to be concerned and buy any type of converter?

I am traveling to the Philippines next week and am confused on whether I need to buy a converter to be able to charge my Iphone (and Ipad).  I was told I did not as the chargers were universal and automatically converted anywhere from 100 to 240v depending on what you plug into.
I would just like some more confirmations if any one has traveled internationally.
    Thank you.

No, but most international airports I have been to have convenience stores that sell the plug adapters.  And there are always other shops with the adapters so it is easy to get exactly what you need after you get there.

  • IPhone 4S GSM/CDMA?

I heard unlocked iPhone 4s supports dual GSM/CDMA supported.
Then why does Apple website says iPhone 4s can only support GSM?

If you read further on the Apple website, you'll see that unlocked phones are GSM unlocked only.  CDMA phones are locked to their carrier.  The GSM portion CAN be unlocked for international roaming.

  • Why my iPad 4G GSM-CDMA model cannot recognize my ruim cdma card?

    Oohh.. That bad news! :-(
So what I should do if I want use cdma if ruim is not supported.. :-(
Should I go to carriers and ask them to inject my iPad? If that so, then the worstnis the carriers in Indonesia until now cannot inject it to iPad or iPhone.. :-(

  • HT3669 My Epson Perfection 1200 scanner functions as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimet

Epson Perfection 1200 scanner continues to function as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies/film negs the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimeters. All the communications seem to recognise the scanner and the mode for the intended scan but the necessary overview scan is not completed, nothing comes up on the Image Capture scan window. If I unplug the film adaptor I can get a document scan. When I plug in the adaptor again the Image Capture details change which allows me to select the type of scan required but when the scanner attempts an overview scan it is unable to complete it.
I have had the scanner from new (12 Years) and have previously scanned slides and film with the adaptor but maybe this was before I upgraded my computer (imac 27").
Do I have to buy a new scanner?  It seems so close to working correctly.
I have downloaded the Epson recommended driver (5.4) and have Epson Perfection 1200 6.6 Universal showing in the Applications List.
Any thoughts or observations would be much appreciated before I go out and spend money an new hardware.
    Thanks

I have same issue - have you solved this yet?

Just an adapter to change the US plug style to the one in the country you are going to. The AC charger will do the rest. It is rated for 120-240 volts and will adjust on  its own.

    Hi,
I want to know is there any way by which we can know the entire path or the hops travelled by the client request packet to reach the web-server.Say suppose the client machine is part of a large network in a corparate where there is a a personlaized WAN. I want to know whther i can achive this using the servlets.
and i even want to know some information about the client's NIC Card Physical Address. If at all i use the HttpServletRequest.inetAddress() gives the public IP of the Client which is shared in the network.
Please suggest me a way by which i can do this.

  • I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic but Logic won't send midi data out to the MOTU Traveller to the Piano Disc player

    Hello All,
I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic Pro 9.1.8  but Logic won't send the midi data back out to the MOTU Traveller and thus to the Piano Disc player. I got it to playback one time but have no idea how and when it did it was looping or something because the velocity was way high coming back in and the damper pedal was slamming down. When I play a key on the piano the midi "in" light on the Traveller lights up. When I play the track back on my computer no lights blink on the Traveller and when I did the apple midi studio test in utilities when I play a key I get the confirmation signal noise and the Traveller blinks when I click on the down arrow of the Traveller in the Apple midi studio test the midi out light on the traveller never lights and the signal light on the piano does not blink either. No outbound signal at all...
I have messed with every possible parameter I can find and and have had help from one of Piano Disc's premier editors but no luck. The piano was prepped for me on Logic so it would work with my studio.  I'm positive it's my fault and I'm overlooking something really simple and stupid but what!??!
Somebody please help.  Thank you all in advance for ANY ideas you might have!

    Blues Piano,
I'm not sure if this will be a help or not.  I'm so Logic Pro wet behind the ears that I make newbies look experienced.  However, I'm not expecting many on the Apple support forums have a PianoDisc system, much less one with the new optical record strip.  While I don't have any record strip on my PianoDisc, I do have a PianoDisc iQ that's only a month old.  I've been playing converted paper scrolls from hundred year old player pianos through it via the MIDI in port of the PianoDisc CPU.  I've found I have to open the MIDI file in Logic Pro (10.0.4) then go to <Track><New External MIDI Track> then copy the existing track to that new external track.  Only then can I see in the Track inspector (defaults left side of screen with the Icon for the instrument) the "Port" parameter.  Then I can select my external MIDI device in that Port selector.
I've also encountered problems with the PianoDisc not using enough force on the notes or using too much force.  To get around this problem, until I understand Logic better, I've been setting minimum and maximum volicities.  To do that I right click on the track and select "Select All."  Then I right click again and select "MIDI" then "MIDI Transform"  then "Velocity Limiter."  In the resulting pop up window in the center is a drop down and you can play with the velocity from "MIN" to "MAX" along with "ADD" "SUBTRACT" etc.
I hope this helps.  I envy you your Mason & Hamlin.  If you need more help on this just email me at pfleischmann at mac dot com.
