Traveling with an iPad

I will be traveling and will bring my iPad in order to blog while on the road. Is there a way to transfer my photos from my point and shoot camera to my iPad? Thanks.

There sure is... it is called the Camera Connection Kit...

  • Traveling with your iPad? A warning.

If you are planning on traveling to/through Israel with your iPad, don't. Israel has banned the iPad there and is confiscating them from travelers. The problem is purported to be the WiFi frequencies used by the iPad. (Yes, the same frequencies that seem to be OK in laptops and smartphones, which are NOT banned).

    Jake81 wrote:
Israel is banning iPads for the same reason some universities such as Princeton are banning them from their networks. The ipad's wifi signal operates on a frequency that doesn't play nice with other machines on the network.
Not exactly.... Israel is not allowing iPads because of a radio frequency concern, while Princeton is requiring students with iPads to follow certain steps to make sure they do hold onto their DHCP lease longer than they should. Princeton has asked Apple for a fix and in the meantime has advised their students to follow certain guidelines to make sure it renews the lease when appropriate. Only in extreme cases will they prohibit an iPad from accessing their network- if the student follows their guidelines they will have no problem.

  • Travel with an ipad

I am going to Great England in August. Will I have any problems charging my ipad ? What specific items will I need to avoid a problem ?

Well, now I'm puzzled. I got a Targus World Power adapter at Best Buy, and it's got the different plugs used in various countries, but the instruction manual says (in bold print)
THIS PRODUCT IS NOT A VOLTAGE CONVERTER
I know the UK's power comes out at 240 volts. Will I burn out my iPad and iPod without getting a voltage converter?
The Apple charger "block" works on the same principal as the thermos bottle (which somehow knows whether you want to put hot or cold liquids in it).
In other words, the iPad charger block automatically takes either 240 or 120 volts.  However, you will need a different wall plug.  I think there are about 5 or more models worldwide. Get the correct one, plug you US charger plug into it and then plug the whole package into a UK wall plug.  AFAIK, the same principal works with most if not all of the newer electronic gear (any laptop, any electric shaver, etc, etc).  The only item I've had a problem with in over 50 years of international travel is 110 V emersion heaters.  Plug one of those babies into 240 and they're toast in a second or two.

  • Travel with 3G ipad

how can you use ipad 2 3G in Punta Cana?

If you have the AT&T iPad, it is unlocked and should work with a SIM from any GSM service provider. The GSM cell service provider in la Rupublica Dominicana is Orange Telecom (France).  If you have the Verizon iPad, you can roam on Verizon's CDMA network there.
For GSM service you will need a microSIM, so you may need to go directly to an Orange customer service office to buy one. Or you can buy a regular SIM from any Orange Cell Store you see and cut it down to size.
I have this one. It works great.

The electric service in the Dominican Republic is the same as the US. You will not need adapters.

Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?
Check with your carrier about roaming charges.  They are usually prohibitive.  Best to get a local SIM.

I am unable to see the airplay icon on my macbook air, iphone or iPad which would enable me to use my Bose speaker through airplay. I set this up in the UK but have taken my macbook and bose speaker travelling with through Thailand. Ive wifi in my room and am able to access the internet on my laptop, Ive also been able to through the Bose Soundlink air wifi set application connect the bose speaker to the Wifi too.
I am only able to play my itunes through my macbook speakers and cannot find the airplay button which should be next to the volume slide once turned down to less than 1/3 of the volume..

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • HT1665 I have a World Travel Adapter Kit for use with my iPad. can the plug adapters also be used on the Mac Pro charger to charge up my laptop when travelling or is a special converter needed.M

I have a World Travel Adapter Kit for use with my iPad when traveling abroad. I know this charger can be used on an iPhone, can the plug adapters also be used with the charger of a Mac Book Pro or is a special converter required?

Is there any concern about the type of travel adapter kit? For instance, some instructions indicate they are for heat creating appliances (hairdryers, curling irons, etc.). I bought such a set, but do they present any issues if used with more delicate electronic circuitry (for iPads, iPods, or with camera battery chargers). I am leaving for the UK on Monday and need to get it right - are they too strong for the Apple products if they are not to be used with computers? What other options are out there?

  • Is there a PORTABLE wireless router that I could travel with to convert hotel LAN lines into wireless signals for my iPad?

I travel regularly to Asia and I have been trying to compile everything I need into my iPad.  Unfortunately, most of my hotels do not have wireless in the rooms just an LAN line.  Does anyone know of a router (as small as possible) that I can plug an LAN line into that will convert it to a wireless signal I can access with the iPad.  What I don’t want is to have to plug the router into a computer and program it forevery different LAN line I encounter.  Thoughts???

As the others have said, Airport Express is one option.  The catch as Allan said is that the configuration utility doesn't run on the iPad.  It is rumored that iOS5 may have the utlity, but that doesn't help you now.  If you can wait, then the Airport Express would arguably be the best for the iPad.
If you can't wait, you could get the D-Link DAP-1350.  You configure it through a webpage, similar to how you would other home routers.
    http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DAP-1350
I use the older DWL-G730AP 802.11g version and it's been very good to me for use by my Macbook Pro and iPad1.

Ever since I was with my iPad in France, it goes to the French app store instead of to the Netherlands' one. As a consequence, I am unable to download any app. Not in France, because my bank account number is Dutch (it says), not in the Nteherlands because I should buy in the Dutch app stoe.
How to get rid of this problem? I regularly travel from the Netherlands to France.

Can I use iPad (in contract) in other countries while I am travelling with there local SIM?
Or, only WiFi will be available when I travel? Or, nothing will work?

Either will work. 4G only works in Canada and the USofA. In foreigh countries the New iPad will fall back to 3G if you have a local sim and iPad data plan from a local provider.

  • Traveling to France with my iPad 2 ATT

I am traveling to France with my iPad 2 with 3G.  I realize I can use Wi-Fi for data, but I would like to use the 3G in France. I would like to do that my changing my micro sim in my ipad so I can use a local carrier in France and save some money.  Does anyone know about this subject and where I can purchase a micro sim in France.  Does anyone have any experience with this matter.

They're rated for world voltage. If you can find the teeny tiny print on your charging bricks it'll say 100-240W, which covers the world wide variances.
All you'll need is that adapter.

  • Experience of traveling through Great Britain and Germany with my iPad

I wanted to share my experiences regarding traveling through Great Britain and Germany with my iPad.
It should be noted that my son brought his netbook with iTunes on it so it was simple to get the carrier file for microsims. I think if you are travelling without an additional system for the update, a quick visit to an apple store would take care of it.
    *First stop: Scotland/England*
The day after I got to Scotland we found a 3 store. I walked in found a iPad specific sim hanging on the wall, took one and brought it to a rep who took my ten pounds and activated the sim. All in all, it took about five minutes. It popped it in when we got back to the hotel and connected the iPad to my son’s netbook, iTunes popped up, I told it not to sync and then it offered to update the carrier file. I clicked okay and a few minutes later I had 3G up and running with 250 megs of pre-paid data. In my last few days in London I did another 10 pound top-up as we found ourselves relying on the mapping functionality a lot.
Coverage-wise, 3 was quite good. The only places I had problems was when we were on a four-day hike along Hadrian’s Wall where I found the signal coming and going.
All in all it was a great experience and I give it an A.
    *Second stop: Germany*
Germany was a completely different thing.
Both Vodaphone and O2 shops do not have sims in stock. You need to pre-order the sims and have them mailed to a German address. On top of that, one of them (I can’t remember which) wanted 25 euro just for the sim. The reps in the store were always unhelpful, many did not even know that iPad sims were available form their respective companies and several mentioned that because “no one wanted an iPad in Germany” they didn’t see the point in carrying the sims. So no 3G in Germany for me.
On top of that, WiFi was not all that common. Even places that advertised free wifi often told us it was currently broken.
So, iPad travel experience in Germany: D-

I just returned from 1 of only 2 carriers(telcel main office only)where I live in Los Cabos, Mexico, I just paid $149 pesos/$11.60 US for a sim and I was told they needed me to bring my ipad in, after about 1 hour they finally gave me my sim, and then said at least 24 hours for activation. There is no easy way from what I have been told to add money/time, you can go to their main office and pay for exactly whatever plan you want, you must return to their office to renew using this method, the other way is to buy a prepaid card and supposedly enter the code into the ipad, but none of the cards denominations correlate with the plans that are offered. I have lived here 20 years so nothing surprises me anymore. It was basically a cluster---, due to the fact nobody seemed to have a clue about the ipad, I jokingly asked if I was their first ipad customer, they said I was their 2nd. So it seems to me, if you had planned to use this "magical ipad" for travels in different countries, you had better make sure you have wifi, or take your laptop instead. I am somewhat disappointed that apple wants to sell millions of these, yet does not make sure their carriers know what is going on. Either I misunderstood all the hype and ad's, or this thing probably is best used only where you know you can receive wifi. I bought 3 ipads, this last one a 3g, I can see I will have to bring my laptop on all travels if I want to be assured of having internet, it seems apple should concentrate a bit more on customer service instead of sales. I will update when and if I get a connection.
    buenos suerte…

Any computer can be hacked.  Passwords can be bypassed.
I would reduce the amount of sensitive information on your iPad to the absolute minimum.
According to media reports, law enforcement officials (who can sometimes also be criminals) have tools to hack into handheld devices.
