Traveling with G4

I am traveling to Abu Dhabi this month and would like to confirm that my Powerbook G4 can function on their electrical system- which is the same as the UK 220/240 volts at 50 Hz. Can anyone assist?
thanks- pt

You will not have a problem, it will work fine with the 120/240 brick.
Just may need to get a plug adapter at the hotel's front desk.

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

I am unable to see the airplay icon on my macbook air, iphone or iPad which would enable me to use my Bose speaker through airplay. I set this up in the UK but have taken my macbook and bose speaker travelling with through Thailand. Ive wifi in my room and am able to access the internet on my laptop, Ive also been able to through the Bose Soundlink air wifi set application connect the bose speaker to the Wifi too.
I am only able to play my itunes through my macbook speakers and cannot find the airplay button which should be next to the volume slide once turned down to less than 1/3 of the volume..

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • Travelling with access to no external drive - show what's available now

Ok this is kinda like another unanswered post I have.
If I am travelling with my MB and want to listen to my music in itunes it still shows my entire library which is 80% not available because its on an external drive at home.
How do I get itunes to only show what is available on the laptops internal drive?

Good stuff.  Thanks.  Agree in principle re: "TBolt for displays; USB3 for storage".
I did get a USB 3 hub.  (Amazon link.  There is a 7-port hub as well.)  Highly recommended (at least for rMBP users).  This works well with how I use Aperture: I have several external drives with mostly Referenced Originals and some Libraries.  Since I rarely use more than one of these at a time, it doesn't matter that the hub throughput is limited to a single USB 3 channel.  The USB 3 hub, for me, functions as a quasi-data-server for Aperture, and takes up only one of the two USB 3 ports on the rMBP.  (Fwiw, with the rMBA I don't think there's much reason for storing Referenced Originals on a fast drive; because of the efficiency of the way Aperture caches, USB 2 may be fast enough.  I haven't measured this yet.)
I mentioned eSATA only because almost all my external drives came with eSATA ports and cables.  I have never used eSATA.  At this point, I don't plan to.
I have moved a few drives into USB 3 enclosures (purchased from OWC).  With the USB 3 hub, and the newly-available Apple TBolt-FW800 adapter (which supports daisy-chained FW devices), I am no longer in any practical way limited by the four ports on the rMBP (2x TBolt, 2x USB 3).  Whew.
I backup my system drive wirelessly to a Time Capsule every night (by design, the machine doesn't have access to the TC during the day when I'm working), and use SuperDuper to backup all Libraries and Referenced Originals to specific sparse bundles kept on leap-frogging external drives, with one always off-site.  At this point I make no practical distinction between FW800 and USB 3 drives for back-up, as they are all fast enough and the back-ups run unattended.  (But USB 3 seems to be much faster.)

  • LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me. Only have a problem with one. Is there a fix?

LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me between the locations. Only have a problem with one that inappropriately ejects when the Air sleeps (and only sometimes). Is there a fix? I've read others who believe that the problem is with the operating system (I'm using 10.9.2). But my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's. Any suggestions about how to fix?

Lacie doesnt make HD, thats a Seagate inside the box.
    Is there a fix?
Yes, get a 4TB max HD,    6TB drives are both new and have known issues,  ...in fact so do most all 4TB drives.
my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's
    You mean Seagate
Large external hard drives are great! Large external hard drives are horrible
It is a common premise that people are overjoyed at the dropping prices per terabyte on external hard drives, and the first thing that enters most peoples minds is "great, I can put all my stuff on one drive,... all of it!" However considerations need to be made in creating a giant single choke point for not mere data loss, but seriously large data loss. If there is at the very least yet another redundant copy, this is fine, otherwise do not consider it whatsoever. Some 3TB and 4TB drives of all mfg. have, at the time of this writing, reliability concerns currently and best recommendation is staying at 2TB drives or less.
Advantages and disadvantages of larger 3TB and 4TB external drives must be weighed

  • Traveling with Mac Pro problems!!!!!!

I am going to college soon for photography/graphic design/video editing. As a side note I am still advancing with editing as I only have FCE right now. I need to get a new computer and I am torn between the Macbook Pro 17" and the Mac Pro. I will be going to Savannah from the midwest, meaing I will be flying mostly but i could drive sometimes. Does it pay to get a mac pro for the expandibility and then travel with it? Wouldn't that run the risk of damaging it if it was shipped? What about the display? Then again, if I get the macbook pro, I will be limited on running certain programs eventually right? Does any one know if Final Cut Studio 2 will run on a macbook pro 17 inch? I need something that will last about 4-5 years with college and that I can have a decent chance at traveling with to and from college. Thanks for any help!

If you are going to college with a MacBook Pro, max the RAM, get hard drive bigger than stock; for your specific needs, I'd say no smaller than 500G. In addition, make sure you get an external drive for backups. You really don't want to be in the middle of a school project, or 2 hours from due date with your backup at home, or worse yet, no backup.
I know some people like incremental backups or a clone that overwrites the last clone, but I recommend a full backup added to the last full backup. I've heard over and over people relied on a backup that turned out to be corrupt. I have full backups from several years ago of my documents folder (IMHO, system files and preferences are much easier to replace, so I don't backup those as often.) on different external drives and optical media.
For your current needs, it looks like portability is more important and practical. (I found that having my own portable made class notes, study groups, and computer lab time less frustrating.) Anyone I've met who uses high-end cpu/graphic intensive applications regularly, won't find that a portable computer meets their needs for as long as a desktop system - even a high-end portable. So, you might find yourself needing, not just wanting to upgrade sooner than you initially project.
    Good luck on your decision.
Oh yeah. I don't want to forget to remind you that laptop theft on college campuses are high. Look into security options. If you have an iPod, they are more desired and easier to conceal than laptops and will disappear.

Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh
Just download and install 5.7.1. Don't worry about earlier versions.
You'll need to enter your serial number to license the software.

  • Traveling with the imac 24"

    Hi everyone,
I have the late 2006 iMac 24" and i'm looking to bring this along with me for an overseas assignment. I've read about the iLugger and i've read about shipping the iMac using the original box that came with it.
Has anyone had any experience on traveling with the iMac 24". What are my best options for air travel with this? Appreciate your responses.

If I had to travel with my 24" imac, I would use nothing less than this:

  • SAP ME ADS Printing - Traveler with dynamic table

Does any one have an example  traveler template that uses a dynamic table to display all the operations on the traveler? Ie one template that works for different routers.
The problem we are having is due to the xml tags for each operation being different eg <operation0>, <operation1> etc which the dynamic table in Livecycle Designer doesn't seem to like.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    Hi Stuart,
    We are using ME15 SP03.
We have already read that document cover to cover and we can print a traveler with SFC or Shop order header data etc. We can also print a fixed list of operations but what we want to do is have a single template that has a dynamic table that prints all the operations regardless of how many there are.
Paragraph 6.11 of the document tells you that if you have multiple operations the binding should end with .Router_Step_ID0 , .Router_Step_ID1, Router_Step_ID2 etc etc
This would mean that I would have to create a template for each different material that has a different number of router steps as you effectively hard code each step ID
The first system I ever worked on (Visiprise 4.2) had the capability of using one template that automatically shrunk / expand based on the number of operations but I just cant see how to do it in LiveCycle Maybe I'm missing the obvious.
    Thanks
    Kevin

Can I use iPad (in contract) in other countries while I am travelling with there local SIM?
Or, only WiFi will be available when I travel? Or, nothing will work?

Either will work. 4G only works in Canada and the USofA. In foreigh countries the New iPad will fall back to 3G if you have a local sim and iPad data plan from a local provider.

This is a simple request: Verizon - please exchange my Ellipsis Jetpack for an LG G Pad 8.3 tablet.  The Jetpack I purchased on July 9 (to travel with for 3+ weeks) failed to work since day-one, repeated attempts to fix the device with tech support and personal visits to various stores in multiple states did not fix the trouble. After requesting alternative solutions which included an exchange (see above) the only solution offered by Verizon personnel is to replace the unit with a used reconditioned Ellipsis Jetpack or cancel the Jetpack service, pay the cancellation fee of $175 and buy the GPad and activate a new contract for that device. All of this for something that has failed to work and didn't provide the intended benefit when needed.

    Jones1280,
Thanks for reaching out to us today. I can understand your concern. We do offer a Worry Free Guarantee on all of our devices. If the devices do not work the way you are looking for them to work you can always take them back to the store within the first 14 days to exchange the device. After the 14 day Worry Free Guarantee if the devices are melfunctioning we would replace the device with a Certified Pre-Owned device under the manufacture warranty. These device go over a 100 point inspection to make sure that they are working like they are coming out to the box for the first time.
What kind of issues are you having with the Jetpack? Please provide me with some details on what is going on. I would love to get this device up and running the way it should be. Please keep us posted.

At work we have many who travel with train alot, where the internet is very unstable at best. And  they have trouble getting their e-mails.
So the question is if there is a way to increase the mail cache in iOS 7, to lower the dependency of a very poor internet connection.

I don't think so. Unless it's in the settings, there's not much that can be done.
are they using wifi on the train? If so, maybe switching to cellular. There are devices like the Mifi, which is a battery operated portable wifi hotspot that they can connect their device to.
If the wifi on the train is solid, I know I've had issues using certain hotspots. For example, my yahoo mail simply will not pull down via the mail app if I'm on some AT&T hot spots. But if I go in via safari then it works. So if the signal is good, maybe using a different way can help.
Or maybe looking for a mail interface that isn't apple's. There are others in the app store that may have better function or more control.

It occurs to me, I never finished asking this question and the original has been archived:

I have made, and we traveled with, a copy of our retail install OS X disk.
Our install disk is version 10.4.6. Is the assumption that if we have to reinstall OS X, I use the disk, reinstall to 10.4.6 and then do an update of OS on the road?
Is there a way to avoid this update step and make an install disk of 10.4.11?
    Thanks,
    Mrs H

    Limnos wrote:

Would that involve installing from the install disk and then going to the combo updater as I did when I initially updated to 10.4.11?
I'd just get a portable drive to do complete bootable backups on the road if they are that critical in what you do.>
Good point though one more piece of electrical equipment is more than I care to contemplate. However, your point "if they are that critical" leads me to wonder - could I just continue to work using the OS version on my install disk until I get back home. The work we do on the road is mostly writing (Using Office 2004) or Safari searches. The photo stuff we do with iLife on the road and save Photoshop for home.
Do you know if any of these would be troubled by reverting to the older version of the OS (10.4.6)?
    Thanks,

  • Travel with Apple TV - Wireless Bridge?

I travel extensively and travel with Apple TV, MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad2. After losing about 10 Apple Remotes, I now try to use my iPhone or iPad as the remote to my Apple TV. In fact, it's better than the Apple Remote!
All is wonderful as long as the hotel uses ethernet to connect to the internet. If that's the case, I plug the ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro and create an ad hoc network to share the connection to the other devices, making them all on the same network.
If the hotel only has wireless connections, it only works for one device. I can share the wireless connection through my MacBook Pro, but then I can only plug in the Apple TV, thus not being able to use the Remote application for my iPhone or iPad.
I've been looking at Wireless Bridges. I asked at the Apple Store if the Airport Express or Extreme would work and was told it would not. Does anyone know if a wireless bridge would work? I would bridge the wireless connection to the ethernet port of my MacBook Pro, then share the ethernet back out wirelessly.
    Suggestions/ideas?

There is only one account created on this computer, so that makes it the admin. account, right?
Even if your user account has admin privileges, apps don't run as administrator by default. You have to authorize it with your password for that to happen. If you right-click on the iTunes icon, there should be a "Run as Administrator" option in the popup menu.

  • Traveling with 2nd mac; need to sync iphone

I sync my iphone 3G to my imac 21" at home. I'm traveling with a MacBookPro. I purchased a movie on itunes to watch on my iphone on the plane flight home.
Is there a way to sync a single movie to my iphone without erasing everything currently on my iphone?
    Thanks.

    No.
The iphone will sync pics and itunes content from one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will first erase the itunes content from the iphone, then replace with content from the new computer.
