Traveling with iPad 3G

I am taking a cruse and will take my i pad with me, my question is will I be able to connect to the 3G network outside the U.S.and does my data plan cover this or will I be charged extra like with the i phone?

Presuming you are using AT&T, see:

  • Traveling with iPad in Italy

I am traveling to Italy this summer.  I have purchased a power converter, should I anticipate any problems charging my iPad or iPhone?  Can I use a multiple plug with the converter and charge both devices?  Thanks.

The iPad needs 10w and the iPhone 5w
The ipad Apple powerpack will happily charge both
it is 110-240v 50/60 cycles so will work anywhere on the planet with a suitable
    pin convertor
( it will not damage the iPhone which  will only take the charge it requires )

  • Car travel with ipad

I am car traveling across the country with my new ipad and will have to leave it in the car at times.
What is the best way to do this?  I will be out West where it is 95 degrees.  If I take it hiking it will be in
my backpack in the sun, also.

The best thing to do is not leave it in the car at all. A car's interior can easily rise above 120 degrees and often more, temperatures that will not be good for your iPad and well above Apple's statement of allowed nonoperating temperatures (113 degrees max). If you do have to leave it in the car, make sure at least that the windows are open a bit and use a windshield screen so as to try to keep the temperatures down.
As to a backpack, it's unlikely that your backpack would get hot enough to damage the iPad, but keep your iPad insulated in something, use a light-colored backpack if you have a choice, and try not to leave the backpack sitting in the sun for a long time.
    Regards.

Any computer can be hacked.  Passwords can be bypassed.
I would reduce the amount of sensitive information on your iPad to the absolute minimum.
According to media reports, law enforcement officials (who can sometimes also be criminals) have tools to hack into handheld devices.

  • Traveling with IPAD through Scandinavia

Has anyone had experience traveling through Scandinavia using an IPAD?  I understand that you need to be careful about roaming as that can be very expensive.  Do you recommend ATT vs. Verizon?  Any particular IPAD usage that you found to be indispensable?

For an iPad 3 it does not matter. If iPad 2 you need a AT&T model.

  • Travel With Ipad

Is the Ipad able to be plugged into 220 plugs in Europe like the Iphone?

Re: iPad use when traveling in Europe.......Would it be better to get/use an iPad there instead of my iPhone? All I want to do is email, but don't want the long distance charges on the phone, (so I'll turn off my "push"). I'm not the most savy user, but it seems like iPad's separate billing system is good for traveling?

  • Travel with iPad to China

Do I need a converter to use my iPad in China?  I have a plug adapter, but do I need a converter to change 220V to 110V in order to use my iPad safely?

Yes. But to be sure look at the small writing on the charger. It should say 100 volts to 220 volts or similar.

I am unable to see the airplay icon on my macbook air, iphone or iPad which would enable me to use my Bose speaker through airplay. I set this up in the UK but have taken my macbook and bose speaker travelling with through Thailand. Ive wifi in my room and am able to access the internet on my laptop, Ive also been able to through the Bose Soundlink air wifi set application connect the bose speaker to the Wifi too.
I am only able to play my itunes through my macbook speakers and cannot find the airplay button which should be next to the volume slide once turned down to less than 1/3 of the volume..

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • Can I use iPad (in contract) in other countries while I am travelling with there local SIM? Or, only WiFi will be available when I travel?

Can I use iPad (in contract) in other countries while I am travelling with there local SIM?
Or, only WiFi will be available when I travel? Or, nothing will work?

Either will work. 4G only works in Canada and the USofA. In foreigh countries the New iPad will fall back to 3G if you have a local sim and iPad data plan from a local provider.

  • Traveling with your iPad? A warning.

If you are planning on traveling to/through Israel with your iPad, don't. Israel has banned the iPad there and is confiscating them from travelers. The problem is purported to be the WiFi frequencies used by the iPad. (Yes, the same frequencies that seem to be OK in laptops and smartphones, which are NOT banned).

    Jake81 wrote:
Israel is banning iPads for the same reason some universities such as Princeton are banning them from their networks. The ipad's wifi signal operates on a frequency that doesn't play nice with other machines on the network.
Not exactly.... Israel is not allowing iPads because of a radio frequency concern, while Princeton is requiring students with iPads to follow certain steps to make sure they do hold onto their DHCP lease longer than they should. Princeton has asked Apple for a fix and in the meantime has advised their students to follow certain guidelines to make sure it renews the lease when appropriate. Only in extreme cases will they prohibit an iPad from accessing their network- if the student follows their guidelines they will have no problem.

  • Is it safe to use the Belkin power strip with USB ports to charge my iPad? Or is the iPad USB adapter the safest route to take when traveling with device?

Is it safe to use the Belkin power strip with USB ports to charge my iPad?
Or is it better to travel with the Wall Charger provided with iPad?
Concerned about safety of the device. Thanks for your thoughts.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

  • IPod Classic won't charge with iPad charger

I have a 120GB iPod Classic and tried to charge it using the charger from my iPad 2. No luck - the indicator doesn't show that it's charging. The iPad 2 charger works fine on my iPhone 4 and I read that it should work with the iPod as well. Shouldn't it? Any thoughts? My goal is to be able to travel with just one charger. Thanks

It should work.  See here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3044169?start=0&tstart=0

  • Macbook pro with monitor VS imac with ipad

Hello and thanks for helping me out!
I have an older MacBook Pro, via 2007.  It hasn't been updated, has the old processor, etc. I use it for storage of older pics and music now.
Main focus: I am now much more into Photoshop CS5, do travel quite a bit, NOT a gamer so please dont mention it!
    I am deciding between:
13" Macbook Pro (for portability when traveling, etc)  with a 23-27" screen at home for editing. (not willing to dish out 1K for an apple screen, looking at Samsungs for ~$400-600)
    OR
iMac 21.5" for an at home setup,  with an iPad 3 (whenever it comes out) for portability (probably no on the road editing)
Any thoughts, ideas, things to consider??
    Thanks for ANY help!

There are many iPad cases that feature Bluetooth keyboads, like this, so that takes care of that problem.
The biggest downfall IMO about iPad is that it runs iOS, and granted while it has more capabilities with Apps and iBooks 2, it's still iOS. So it's not nearly as advanced as OS X is. However, not everyone needs a full OS suite while traveling. And if you want to travel light, iPads are the way to go, since the 13 inch MBP is 4lbs and it goes up from there.
If you can go all out, check out the Modbook. Has the Steve Wozinak seal of approval

  • Want to save high volume of photos while traveling from ipad to external hard drive. Is there a way to transfer from iPad to directly to external HD using any adpators, connections etc ? I don't see a way yet.

I am a photographer now using iPhonea4 and iPad2. I will be travelling and want to store images on an external HD. How can I transfer the images off of iPad2> I have the AV adpaters. Can it be done? I can easily transfer to my Desktop while I am home but this is testing the idea of travelling with and backing up images on the fly while on the road.

No they will not come from an SD card.
I wanted to only have to carry the iPhone4 and not the large DSLR. I usually shott with the iPhone and then transfer to the iPad for processing. Images mount up very quickly. I understand about wi-fi, Dropbox, clouds and photosynch. I was looking for a way to go directly from iPad2 to an external harddrive like WD passport which I am using at home.
I would appreciate any suggestions but so far do not see any provision for storage on the fly.
