Traveling with Tiger, revisited

It occurs to me, I never finished asking this question and the original has been archived:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1734821&tstart=0
I have made, and we traveled with, a copy of our retail install OS X disk.
Our install disk is version 10.4.6. Is the assumption that if we have to reinstall OS X, I use the disk, reinstall to 10.4.6 and then do an update of OS on the road?
Is there a way to avoid this update step and make an install disk of 10.4.11?
Thanks,
Mrs H

Would that involve installing from the install disk and then going to the combo updater as I did when I initially updated to 10.4.11?
I'd just get a portable drive to do complete bootable backups on the road if they are that critical in what you do.>
Good point though one more piece of electrical equipment is more than I care to contemplate. However, your point "if they are that critical" leads me to wonder - could I just continue to work using the OS version on my install disk until I get back home. The work we do on the road is mostly writing (Using Office 2004) or Safari searches. The photo stuff we do with iLife on the road and save Photoshop for home.
Do you know if any of these would be troubled by reverting to the older version of the OS (10.4.6)?
Thanks,
Mrs H

  • Traveling with Tiger - what to bring?

We will be traveling for a while and taking our iBook G3 dual USB. We have the iBook primarily for travel - if it is stolen or dies, it's a less costly loss than our MBP (and has only travel info/data on it so the loss would be less worrysome.)
We've never had software trouble and prefer not to carry CDs, but I've wondered - should I take copy of Tiger install disk (retail CD) with us just in case. But then, if we were to run into trouble, what do we do with the install disk anyway? As I said, I've never had software trouble...
    Mrs H

Thanks to all for you replies.
I guess I wasn't clear enough on my initial question. I really just want to know about Tiger issues. If I run into OS X software issues will the install disk help me? I assume inserting it - (will I be able to open the CD/DVD tray with the function key?) holding down C key and power button will allow me to get the computer started and allow me to run Disk Utility? Is this how you do it???
As I said, we have never had any issues, but I am just trying to cover all bases before we go to places without support by phone and without internet.
To deal with your other pieces of advice, and thank you for the replies, here's what we take with us as far as computer stuff goes-
We are photographers. We believe in redundancy for security and safety. We travel with 4 cameras, 3 external HDs (JOBO brand) 40-80GB each for the photo files along with all their cables, 10-15 flash cards for the cameras, a card reader to transfer files to the camera if perchance we need to download a photo for e-mailing, etc. We do not carry a 12v converter - all of our electricals are 110-240 voltage and work wherever, but we do need to carry all those different adapter plugs.
We also travel with 2 memory sticks for the work we do on the computer - journals et al.
In addition we travel with 2 PDA's that run on AA batteries for those times we are without electricity or if the computer fails. And 2 keyboards for the PDA's and 2 flash cards to save the PDA work.
Oh yes, the Ethernet cable-especially in Japan, we've had plenty of hotels without wifi.
So it seems like taking a copy of the OS X retail install disk is not a big deal, I just need to know what to do with it and how to know when I need to do it...
(We always use BullFrog sport gel spray SPF 40.)
    Mrs H
PS By the way, all this stuff, along with all our bicycle gear and tools means, as you might have figured, that we take very little else.

  • Traveling with my MacBook Pro & moving files

I have a desktop Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I want to travel with my MacBook and take some files with me. Not a strange request...right? But having trouble finding how to move some apple files and which files to move.
    Specifically I want to move:
    Address Book
    Ical
    Mail
When I return I will want to move these files back to my desktop. When I used Entourage, I only needed to move the entourage database. easy.
Is there an easy way to move the associated files for Address Book, Ical &
Mail. or do I i have to hunt though all the Library files and prefs??
    Advise??
Also do both MacPro and MacBook Pro have to be on the same OS? (currently one is Leo, one is Tiger)

ok, if you do not need to access your mail, contacts, ical over the net and both your macs are on a local network at home, then you may want to look at:
http://www.address-o-matic.com/ for syncing your address book between both macs when at home on the same local network for example
http://www.busymac.com for the busysync product for syncing your ical between both macs at home on the same local network - although busymac has just released an upgrade which will allow you to sync over the web
as for your email, if your isp allows for an imap account, then you are set, just set up the imap account in mail on both macs and changes on one mac's mail will appear on the other.
the above is not an integrated solution you will note, and will not allow you to view your data online.
.mac will offer you an integrated solution and way much more than syncing of ical, contacts, and mail rules and signatures - note that there is no syncing of emails per se, a .mac account being imap, again changes on one mac's mail will show up on the other. you will also be able to sync bookmarks, access contacts, bookmarks and email online, publish photo albums and videos to the net and share them with friends, sync your entire preferences between both macs, using backups, and idisk. you may want to look at this link to review all the features for .mac: http://www.apple.com/dotmac/
then again .mac may not be what you are looking for, and you may want to focus on individual solutions as outlined above for contacts and calendars.... your choice.
    hope this helps

  • IChat not working with Tiger user

I recently received a new Macbook with Leopard already installed on it. I have 2 friends who also own Macbooks, who I iChat with.
One of my friends received her Macbook when Leopard just came out, so she had Tiger on it previously . The other friend has had her Macbook longer, and does not have Leopard, just Tiger.
When attempting to start an iChat with the friend with Tiger, it would not work. The weird thing about it though is that it has worked a few times before, if we kept trying and I found if I restarted my computer.
However, now the friend that previously had Tiger had problems with her Macbook and received a brand new one with Leopard already on it. Now it does not work for her to start an iChat with the Tiger user, although she had no problems with her old computer.
    Sorry it's confusing!
But in conclusion, it seems that iChat is not working between a Leopard and Tiger user. The confusing part is that we have gotten it to work before...so I'm really not sure what the problem is.
What can we try to get this to work all the time, without her having to upgrade to Leopard?
I usually get an error response saying there was no data received for the last 10 seconds, and she gets different things about Bandwidth, and saying she cancelled the invitation when she didn't.
    Thanks

Personally, I think it's Leopard that is at fault here. I had Tiger and my family and I would video iChat all the time. But then we downloaded Leopard. We discovered we could no longer video iChat.
My son used 4 different computers (all Macs of course), trying same network and different networks. What he discovered is that the ONLY way video iChat now works is if computers are on the same network. Well, how absurd, because the idea is to be able to video iChat with anyone, not just family members in the same household on the same network.
Apparently, somewhere, Apple (Leopard) bragged about their new improved iChat video on a network. Well, I think they forgot that not all of us are sitting in an office wanting to spend the time to iChat video with co-workers, but have friends and family in other areas we'd like to video iChat with.
So through a process of elimination, it all led back to Leopard as being the culprit, because Tiger to Tiger worked perfectly, and even Leopard to Tiger works IF you are on the same network.
I really do hope Apple supplies a FIX for this problem. I, for one, am VERY disappointed in the fact that I now have Leopard and can no longer video iChat with friends across the country.

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

  • Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

I set this up in the UK but have taken my macbook and bose speaker travelling with through Thailand. Ive wifi in my room and am able to access the internet on my laptop, Ive also been able to through the Bose Soundlink air wifi set application connect the bose speaker to the Wifi too.
I am only able to play my itunes through my macbook speakers and cannot find the airplay button which should be next to the volume slide once turned down to less than 1/3 of the volume..

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • Install OS 9 on PowerBook G4 with Tiger

I have a 2003 17" PowerBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. I need to have Classic on it. The original PowerBook restore disk will not install OS 9 or anything else because, it says, the operating system on the computer is newer than the restore disk's. I want to just install OS 9 so that I can have Classic, but have not found a way to do this. The PB G4 is not OS 9-bootable. Any ideas?

On the PB G4 Restore Disk there is an installer for additional software and classic support. However, it doesn't work. When I run it, it goes for a minute, then opens a window requesting I insert the disk with a matching design on it. What it's requesting is the same CD that's already in there, but since it doesn't know it's there, I eject it and re-insert it. Still it does nothing. The only option is to Quit. There is nothing from the regular OS X installation to install Classic.
So, is my only option to use the Restore disk on a Firewire drive, install OS X and Classic on it, then copy it over to my regular boot drive?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Travelling with access to no external drive - show what's available now

Ok this is kinda like another unanswered post I have.
If I am travelling with my MB and want to listen to my music in itunes it still shows my entire library which is 80% not available because its on an external drive at home.
How do I get itunes to only show what is available on the laptops internal drive?

Good stuff.  Thanks.  Agree in principle re: "TBolt for displays; USB3 for storage".
I did get a USB 3 hub.  (Amazon link.  There is a 7-port hub as well.)  Highly recommended (at least for rMBP users).  This works well with how I use Aperture: I have several external drives with mostly Referenced Originals and some Libraries.  Since I rarely use more than one of these at a time, it doesn't matter that the hub throughput is limited to a single USB 3 channel.  The USB 3 hub, for me, functions as a quasi-data-server for Aperture, and takes up only one of the two USB 3 ports on the rMBP.  (Fwiw, with the rMBA I don't think there's much reason for storing Referenced Originals on a fast drive; because of the efficiency of the way Aperture caches, USB 2 may be fast enough.  I haven't measured this yet.)
I mentioned eSATA only because almost all my external drives came with eSATA ports and cables.  I have never used eSATA.  At this point, I don't plan to.
I have moved a few drives into USB 3 enclosures (purchased from OWC).  With the USB 3 hub, and the newly-available Apple TBolt-FW800 adapter (which supports daisy-chained FW devices), I am no longer in any practical way limited by the four ports on the rMBP (2x TBolt, 2x USB 3).  Whew.
I backup my system drive wirelessly to a Time Capsule every night (by design, the machine doesn't have access to the TC during the day when I'm working), and use SuperDuper to backup all Libraries and Referenced Originals to specific sparse bundles kept on leap-frogging external drives, with one always off-site.  At this point I make no practical distinction between FW800 and USB 3 drives for back-up, as they are all fast enough and the back-ups run unattended.  (But USB 3 seems to be much faster.)

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • A G4 running/booting off a lacie with TIGER 10.4.7

i have amongst many G5's , a G3 pismo and a G4 400MHZ desktop that i wish to have boot off of and run as if Tiger was their OS.
The pismo cant run tiger itself i think but could it boot off of TIGER if that was on an external 7200 firewire HD?
could the G4 run off of the Ext fw HD with TIger on it.
in other words the FW LACIE would run OS 10.4.7 from the PISMO and G4.
this way couldnt i run photoshop CS2, GB2 on these other computers??
    thanks

    Hi, Glenn.
The "PowerBook G3 (FireWire)" — aka "Pismo" — is compatible with Tiger. See "Mac OS X System Requirements."
Certain older Macs cannot boot from an external FireWire drive, as specified in "FireWire Booting: What Computers Support It and How To."
    • The Pismo should boot from a FireWire Drive.
    • The G4 may: the G4 will not if it is a "Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)" model. To see if the G4 is that model, consult "Power Mac G4 Models" for models introduced before July 2001.

  • Canupus 110 video convertor will it work with Tiger and i Movie HD 5 or 6.

I am going to buy a video convertor box for my i Mac G5. I am just having way to much probloms with my Director's Cut 2. I got my Mac Christmas and it came with Tiger already built in. I am wondering will the Canupus 110 work with i Movie HD and Tiger thanks.

    Hi C
Sorry You had to wait. Took a while to make a test environment (iLife6 was
    late).
Now I've tested my Canopus ADVC-300 (have no 110) and Mac OS X.4.5
    QT 7.0.4 and iMovie 6.0.1.
    Result: Worked like a Charm.
If You consider buying a new one. Look at the 300 - and more so if You have
old VHS or other analog tapes. They often have drop-outs and I get the
feeling of that this one fix it one way or another. I'm very impressed.

LaCie 6TB drive ejects when Air sleeps: I use two 6TB LaCie drives - home and office with my Air, which travels with me between the locations. Only have a problem with one that inappropriately ejects when the Air sleeps (and only sometimes). Is there a fix? I've read others who believe that the problem is with the operating system (I'm using 10.9.2). But my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's. Any suggestions about how to fix?

Lacie doesnt make HD, thats a Seagate inside the box.
    Is there a fix?
Yes, get a 4TB max HD,    6TB drives are both new and have known issues,  ...in fact so do most all 4TB drives.
my problem suggests that it's with one of the LaCie's
    You mean Seagate
Large external hard drives are great! Large external hard drives are horrible
It is a common premise that people are overjoyed at the dropping prices per terabyte on external hard drives, and the first thing that enters most peoples minds is "great, I can put all my stuff on one drive,... all of it!" However considerations need to be made in creating a giant single choke point for not mere data loss, but seriously large data loss. If there is at the very least yet another redundant copy, this is fine, otherwise do not consider it whatsoever. Some 3TB and 4TB drives of all mfg. have, at the time of this writing, reliability concerns currently and best recommendation is staying at 2TB drives or less.
Advantages and disadvantages of larger 3TB and 4TB external drives must be weighed
