Travelling abroad from UK

Hello All,
I have a friend who is going to be in Morocco, then Egypt, and Algeria during the course of the next year. I want to get him a UK telephone number aligned to his Skype account (running on a laptop and Android phone), so that UK friends anf family can call him on that number from their landlines mobiles, at UK local phone rates, without paying the international rates for those countries he will be in.
I also want him to be able to call people in the UK at local call rates (again not at nomral international call rates. I'm not worried about him making calls within Morocco/Egypt/Algeria from his Skype account as he will have local SIM for his mobile for those calls.
What is the best way to achieve this please? I'm a little unclear on the differences between obtaining a Skype Number or a Skype To Go number, and Microsoft Support have not been able to clear this up for me satisfactorily when I contacted them by phone.
Many thanks for your help

Hello and welcome to the Skype Community.
1. He will require a UK Skype Number to achieve that objective. Skype Number The Number will travel with him so his location becomes irrelevant.

2. For this he will require a Subscription which covers calls to UK or Skype Credit. Details can be found here: Skype subscription Buy Skype credit Both Subscriptions and Credit work from any location.
3. A Skype Number provides the facility for contacts to call the Number holder at their local rates [inbound calls] whereas a SkypeToGo number is designed to allow users to make outbound calls from a regular cellphone at competitive Skype rates. Skype To Go
I hope this helps.

  • Region Coding limit prevents Mac owners traveling abroad from using DVD

I have a friend from the US that travels, works and lives in the US and UK. She has a current Macbook and when she is in London, a DVD bought there brings up the 'Set DVD region' message. This tells her she can only change the region code 5 times before it is stuck on the last one.
This is truly dumb. Windows doesn't do this and she just 'switched' to Mac, not knowing that the Macbook was so limited.
Is it possible to ask Apple for a software or firmware fix so that a Macbook owner that travels internationally can actually use legitimately purchased regionally coded DVDs without their Macbook going toast?

you've posted in the iDVD section of this board, which is an iLife app to create 'homebrewn' DVDs.. not the DVDplayer app.-..
... This is truly dumb. .. Is it possible to ask Apple for a software or firmware fix so that ...
ask the Movie Making Industry to get rid of region-coding.. an 'out of the box' Windows has the same limitations, but for sure, there're zillions of 'hacks' which override that protection.. illegally, just to mention that.

  • How do I get my iphone 4S ready for traveling abroad (from Canada to Mexico)?

I want to use free wifi at the hotel and that's it. Do I turn off data roaming and 3G and then put into airplane mode? Then connect to wifi when it is available? I do not want to incur any extra costs!  Thanks!

Airplane mode powers off all radios completely.  If you then selectively turn on just the wifi radio, the cellular radio remains completely powered off - no cellular voice or cellular data connection of any kind is possible until you disable airplane mode and the cellular radio is powered back on.

  • SPF, SRS and travelling abroad

    Hello,
I've just been reading KB14081 on configuring SRS to overcome the problems with SPF blocking e-mail from Blackberries and the address which the KB advises you to add to your configuration is *@srs.bis.na.blackberry.com. I just did a test mail to myself to see the message header information and I noticed that the Return-Path address is srs.bis.eu.blackberry.com. Making a mental leap, I'm guessing that 'na' stands for North America. I tend to travel abroad from time to time (including North America) so do I need to add both the 'na' and 'eu' lines to my SPF configuration. If so, what other regional codes would one need to apply to be globally covered, or does everything just feed back to my original, 'eu', provider?
    Many thanks,
    Mark.

    Yes.
All iMessage requires is an internet connection which can be wi-fi only.
Turn Cellular Data off and you can enable Airplane mode followed by turning wi-fi access on. All other iPhone radios will be off except for wi-fi.

  • Can you still download from UK i tunes when you are traveling abroad - I have UK i-tunes, but going to study in Europe, but still want to use my UK account?

can you still download from UK i tunes when you are traveling abroad - I have UK i-tunes, but going to study in Europe, but still want to use my UK account?

You can ONLY buy from the itunes store of your country of residence ( proven by the valid billing address on your credit card) and ONLY while inside the borders of that country.

  • How to properly update iTunes content while traveling abroad?

Spent some time searching and found a number of threads covering T&Cs and whys and wherefores of US Citizens on extended overseas travel trying to update or purchase iTunes content. There's a lot of 'why not' but not much 'how to'.
I'm seeking the Apple-approved solution for those of us with US based iTunes accounts who are traveling or deployed overseas or take extended temporary jobs abroad. How can we legally, properly, update our podcast subscriptions, apps for iPhones, or purchase content?
Do we have to simply change the country setting at the bottom of the iTunes Store window, so we are interacting with whatever the local Store is and the content will live happily in iTunes no matter which Store it was purchased from?
Do we have to set up a new account with local credit card in every land we are assigned?
There has to be a way, it seems illogical that you can't update podcasts or apps while traveling. There's got to be an Apple-approved method for this!
If anyone knows the answer or a link to the answer or something near to it, please provide the info. The T&C are clear enough in regards to "purchases" and using the US store only from in the US, but doesn't answer the 'how-to' for customers traveling abroad who are not spending any money by getting new podcast episodes or free app updates.
So again, no need to rehash the T&C, just seeking the 'proper' way to update things if away for a while. I'll be stupefied if I hear that the official Apple answer is the iPhone content is frozen in place until I get back in US territory.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply, Chris.
After posting the message, I changed my iTunes Store to India (where there may be work opportunities) and there were only Apps and iTunes U content tabs, and the T&C were similar-can only shop at the store where you are connecting from. So unless the store looks different when logging in while physically in India, there wouldn't be a way to update podcasts.
I am concerned about an important distinction, though, which is 'what will work' vs. 'what is T&C compliant'...

  • When I travel abroad my phone shows "no sim" and doesn't work. Help?

  • How easy it is travel abroad with the Verizon model of the new iPad?

On the specs listed on Apple's site for the new iPad, it lists GSM frequencies under Verizon model as well !!!
I am sure that one can't use AT&T SIM on the Verizon model, something must have been locked to prevent that.
But does anyone know how easy it is to pop in a foreign country 3G GSM micro-sim when travelling abroad into the new model Verizon iPad?
I have already ordered an AT&T model, but later realized that even the Verizon model shows GSM capabilities. If I could find conclusively about the foreign 3G GSM freedom on Verizon, I will definitely exchange my AT&T model for a Verizon one.

I don't think CDMA uses SIM card at all, hence no SIM slot in ipad 2 VZ model.
But LTE requires a SIM card, the VZ model of the ipad 3 is forced to have a SIM slot.
Here's an FAQ page from VZ site talking about LTE SIM:
    http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/4gsim.html
It's good (I am hoping truly that's the case) that Apple also allowed 3G GSM capability, this means one can pop out the VZ LTE micro-SIM and pop in any 3G micro-SIM.
I think there might be some lines of code from Apple to at least prevent an AT&T micro-SIM to work on a VZ ipad 3 just to prevent VZ from getting upset.
But other 3G micro-SIM's should work on VZ model. We can only find out on the 16th.
Here's one article that talks in details on this topic:

No. Not without access to a computer running iTunes. You do want to use your own computer so that you can restore from your backup and sync your own content back from iTunes.

  • If I travel abroad with my i Pad mini, will local Apps be available to me???

I bought my i Pad mini in Mexico City, Mexico, Please let me know, If I travel abroad with my i Pad, will local Apps of the countries I travel to will be available to me? or am I restricted to only use the Apps for Mexico???

You will only be able to buy/download from the Mexican store whilst you are in Mexico. If you want to buy/download apps from the store in the country that you travel to then you will need an account in that country - so you will either need to update your billing address and country on your existing account, or create a new account with your billing address in that country.

  • Problem with 'No service' while traveling abroad

I am traveling abroad (Uganda) and cannot get service. I have traveled with my phone to Uganda previously (iPhone 5), and was able to send/receive text messages at that time. Prior to this trip, I called Verizon to ensure I had everything I needed in place for voice roaming. They told me that my phone was already enabled for global services. I did decline the global services package, but was told very clearly that I would be able to send/receive text messages and make/receive phone calls regardless of whether I purchased the package or not.
Since traveling through international airports and arriving in Uganda, my phone continues to say "no service" and cannot connect to any local signals. My husband is traveling with me, and his phone has no trouble picking up signals and he has sent/received several text messages. I have tried restarting my phone, taking it in/out of airplane mode, turning roaming on/off, etc. I do not understand what the problem is. I haven't had success trying to online chat. Will it cost me airtime to make a phone call to Verizon from my husband's phone? I don't want to incur large charges waiting on hold for 30 minutes.
I really need the ability to receive text messages while I am gone, in case of emergencies, and I am very frustrated. I ensured everything was in place prior to leaving, and my phone has worked overseas without issue previously. What is the problem, and how do I fix it??!!

Have you tried Resetting Network Settings yet? If not, I would...

    Hope it helps!

  • Will I be able to insert a GSM Sim card in the Verizon iPhone 5 when I travel abroad?

I am planning on buying the CDMA version of the iPhone 5 with Verizon. Is this a "world phone" that can be used with a different carrier (GSM) when I travel abroad?

I can confirm you can purchase PAYG sims ,(no contract at all ) in UK from all UK carriers
You load cash into it and just use , obviously with a telephone number allocated by the relevant carrier
Whether it works with a Sprint iPhone cannot confirm as it will be CDMA and we are 100% GSM in Europe
