Travelling to Canada

I will be on vacation in Canada some questions:
if someone in the USA sends me a text while I am in Canada am I paying any extra charges to receive it?
If I send a text to someone" in the USA"  from my phone while I am in Canada am I paying extra charges?
if I send a text t5o someone in Canada while I am in Canada I assume I will indedd pay extra charges
Generally i assume it all still goes against my allotment of text msgs, but I am wondering about "extra" charges?
THANKS

Hi, I will be traveling to  Canada and USA.
(Meteor PAYG Samsung Trend Plus )
I am trying to find out if there is anything I need to do to make sure I can make and receive calls.
Looking at Meteor website I understand it should work but it says the same for Serbia where I was few weeks ago and I was not able to make calls.
    Thanks

    Hi mariusL
Send me on your number and PIN in a PM and I'll make sure you're set up for roaming.

  • Text charges when travelling to canada

If I don't activate Canada calling plan, will I be charged to receive a text message in Canada? If I keep the phone turned on, will I receive text/calls even when i don't have a canada/global plan?
I want to use the phone to check my emails when on a wifi and use the camera to take cool pics while travelling. .
I plan to fwd the calls to my other phone which has canada plan. Will I be charged to call customer service *611 from Canada from this other phone?
    Please advice.
    Thanks

    Hello PC27,
I'm glad to see that you are traveling to Canada! It's one of my favorite countries to visit. I know that keeping in contact is super important while traveling so I would suggest visiting our global support page for a reference of all of the services and its cost. Here's a link for your review, http://vz.to/1pDgI2c. If you keep the phone on the text and picture messages will come in. Elector gave a great suggestion, turning off cellular data. This way, you won't incur any additional data charges and have still have the option to use wifi. If you have any additional questions then we are here to help.
    Thank you...

  • Help with Droid Selection and also travel to Canada?

I am being given a choice between the Samsung Stratosphere, the Motorola Droid 4, and the HTC Incredible 2. The Stratosphere and Droid 4 are very similar phones. Both have physical keyboards as well as touch screens. The big difference I can see is the Droid 4 has 16GB (double) the memory. Both the Stratosphere and Droid 4 are 4G, but the Incredible 2 is not.
I travel mostly in the US, but do travel to Canada a couple of times a year. I have been told that the Stratosphere and Droid 4 are domestic only phone and that the Incredible 2 is recommended for international travel.
    1. Will the Stratosphere and Droid 4 work in Toronto ... but reverted to 3G?
    2. Recommendations on a choice between the Stratosphere and the Droid 4?
    Thanks in advance!

Any 4g phone will work in Canada/Mexico... on CDMA (3g).
The Stratosphere is a phone from 2010 with LTE bolted on (it's virtually identical to Sprint's version of 2010's Galaxy S, the Epic 4g). The Droid 4 is a RAZR with a keyboard bolted on...
Droid 4 is the far superior device from a hardware standpoint.
Either phone is better than the Incredible 2, due to LTE.

  • Traveling to Canada with iPhone for a weekend? ...

Hey guys, we're pretty new to AT&T. In a couple months I plan to head from the U.S. to Toronto for a weekend. I've heard horror stories about people racking-up insane voice and data charges when traveling to Canada.
When I was with Sprint a few years ago we could add some kind of international plan add-on for something like $3.99 for a single month that completely covered us there.
Does AT&T offer anything similar? What are the options?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Chris

WoW !! It is year 2015......
    Lots of change in Canada.
Making and receiving calls & text are much cheaper now with AT&T while roaming in Canada with Rogers wireless.
But using roaming data still cost a lot.
My suggestion to all my friends are if you coming up North only for a few days, and you really really need to use your phone, remember to turn off data roaming.
For data, use the free wifi in your hotel or free wifi in any public place
Most major airports in Canada got free open wifi for public use.
Burger places and coffee shops also got open wifi for public use,
some of them may need a  password , you can alway ask if you are a customer.
This only apply to major big cities in Canada, like Vancouver BC,Calgary AB,Edmonton AB, Toronto ON,Winnipeg MB, Regina SK, Halifax NS, Quebec QC,St. John NL etc etc.
If you go to Yukon or NWT the above do not apply

  • Carrier not under settings while traveling in Canada.

I am traveling in Canada and I want to connect to Bell 3G rather than ROGERS. However, carrier does not show up under settings and I even tried a hard reset! Can someone help me please?

If you're with AT&T then you can't. AT&T have a partnership with Rogers. Actually at one time it was known as Rogers/AT&T wireless in Canada.

  • HT201210 iphone 3gs ios4.1 ATT upgrade fails, cannot activate, I am travelling in Canada  - help

I am travelling in Canada and tried to update the ios from 4.1 on my ATT iphone 3GS. It backed up the data, then it restored to factory settings  then the activation fails. I now have an unusable 3GS.
    Any suggestions?
    Gregg

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?

  • Travelling to Canada...how to disable EDGE?

Heading to Canada for a few days. I plan to do the following to save money but don't have a perfect solution yet for EDGE
-phone calls - my wife has north america plan from legacy network so all my calls are auto-forwarded to her cell (which is a us number). eats into my minutes but no long distance or roaming
-for email I will have some wifi access. but how do I disable the edge part so emails don't come in through edge? even if I set the request email frequency to manual or every few hours when I do access them with wifi I have no guarantee that they will not first look to the EDGE network and cost me money. Is there anyway to shut off the phone/edge part so I just have wifi?

You have to call AT&T and ask them to disable Edge for the time that you'll go, there's no other way. I went to Canada for 5 days, checked some e-mail, some maps, not a big deal, got a bill for $749.00, so I learn my lesson the hard way so you won't have to.

  • Hi I'm traveling from Canada to USA and I want to be able to use my iphone over wifi only, iMessage, and FaceTime etc. but I don't want to get charged. What do I do?

I was wondering what I need to change or turn off in my settings and where I could find those things. I just don't want to get charged for roaming fees when I will only be using my phone over wifi. Please help. Anything is appreciated!

    Julibella,
I think you should try a quick experiment on your local wireless provider's network.
First turn off wifi (settings-wifi-toggle to off).  Open safari and ensure a webpage will load.  Then go to settings-general-cellular-and turn off cellular data.  Attempt to reload the webpage, the webpage should not load.  If that doesn't convince you attempt to use anything else that uses data (facebook app, email, etc) and they will all say you don't have a connection.
Also you could call your provider and I am certain they will give you similar instructions.

  • Some question about International Travel

Ok so i know alot of people have question about international travel weather is USA to Canada, Canada to USA or where ever.
So i just got off the phone with someone from AT&T these are my questions for them. i hope it can help, im confuse myself.
*1. I travel recently travel to canada a few weeks ago, when i cross the boarder i switch the data roaming ON and it picks up Rogers Wireless, a few days ago i try i again it said NO SERVICE is something wrong with my iPad?*
NO, consider yourself lucky u didnt get charge for that roaming, your ipad well not work out of the US unless u buy one of our International plans that AT&T has provided. The reason for this is so you wont have any unwanted charge or high charge on your bill.
*2. If i was to buy a sim card from Canada and pop it in to my US ipad well it work?*
Honestly that's something you can try at your own risk, it's design for AT&T so by switching sim cards it may affect your ipad such as running slow, virus, crash. You can try it, i dont work for Rogers so i know nothing about them, i work for AT&T so i can only tell you about our plans and i wont lie to you.(I THINK U JUST DID) This ipad is not unlock just like the iphone so it well only work with AT&T.
*3. If i pop my sim card out and put in an international sim card well it affect my plan at all or in any way?*
Yes it can, right now your on the unlimited plan if you put in a different sim card and then re-put in ur AT&T one chances are you're going to loose your unlimited plan and have to settle for the newer plan. That's why AT&T has reduce it's international plans so people are more likely to use it. It's a contract we sign with Apple, if u want to use in canada you can always buy an Ipad in canada and use their plan. (***)
At the end of this conversion i was just more angry with them. All in all she told bottom line is dont do anything stick with AT&T and pay for international plans. So i have to pay over price data plan if i want to use it intertanional? or i have to buy an ipad for each international places i go to?
Has anyone try or done any of the 3 ive mention and did it affect ur plan or ipad in anyway?
    Thanks
    Andy

Ok so here's a little more info
I called AT&T again today asking them the same question the guy was more helpful then the one yesterday. Even though he kinda told me the same saying that the ipad need to be unlock. , Afterward he transfer me someone from Apple. The lady told me
    1. The ipad is UNLOCK so dont bother trying to get it unlock.
    2. she doesnt see why sticking in another sim card from one of the apple ipad carrier is a problem. U would just have to sign up activated it like u would when u first got it.
    3. Contact phone company (my case Rogers) to see if they carry the mico sim cards.
    4. She doesnt see why it would affect the current plan u have now.
So at the end of all that she told me, seem like AT&T is just telling you, you cant do this or u shouldnt do that is simple THEY WANT YOU TO USE THEIR PLANS.
so with that i said i just want to let everyone know. I'm gonna go pick my Micro sim cards from Canada in a bit and sign up for thier plan we'll keep everyone updated if anything change or how it work

  • Living in Canada with a Verizon phone

I live in Canada (near US border - Detroit) and my Verizon phone keeps dropping my calls when my Iphone5 switches between the US and Canadian cell towers...is there a fix?

Now that is a problem. When I travel in Canada when approaching the border into NY the signal is Canadian. Now the trick I would assume is to go into your settings and turn off cellular roaming and see if that works.
You could also purchase a local Sim from the Canadian Provider be it Can-tel, Bell Mobility or any other local provider.
I believe Verizon has signal strength quite a ways into Canada. Normally I think in Montreal it was Verizon or Bell.
    Try what I suggested.
    Good Luck

  • My daughter is going to Canada for a week and i would like to know if it will cost extra for her to text and/or call someone in the United States?

My daughter is going to Canada for a week and i would like to know if it will cost extra for her to text and/or call someone in the United States?

    http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/international/traveling_to/North_America/Canada.html
69 cents a minute for calls, texts covered under an existing texting plan or the standard pay per text rate if you don't have one.
If you're traveling in Canada, contact Customer Service at 800-922-0204 from any landline phone.
Global Picture and Video Messages are billed at the same per-message rate as though they were sent from the U.S. Accordingly, you can send/receive Picture and Video Messages with customers of:
    Verizon Wireless (domestic rates/bundles apply)
Other domestic carriers (domestic rates/bundles apply)
Canadian, Mexican and Puerto Rican carriers (domestic rates/bundles apply)
Select International carriers (global rates apply)
When sending or receiving there's an additional data transport charge billed at the destination's Data Pay per Use Rate multiplied by the size of the Picture or Video, which can vary greatly.
A data network is required to send picture or video outside the U.S. See the Data Roaming List for eligible destinations.
Attempts to send Pictures or Videos are charged, even if the delivery fails.
Text Messages sent or received while in Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are billed as though you were in the U.S.
Check out our Nationwide plus Canada plans if you frequently call or travel to Canada.

  • It's my understanding that when traveling overseas, all i have to do is turn off cellular data to avoid high data charges.

it's my understanding that when traveling overseas, all i have to do is turn off cellular data to avoid high data charges.

With Airplane Mode you will not receive phone calls.  If you are just worried about Data Charges then just go to Settings>Cellular>Data 'Off'  This may also turn your iMessage off such that all your iMessages even in a WiFi environment go out as Text Messages.  If you still want to use iMessage from Apple device to Apple device in a WiFi network then go to Settings>Messages> and turn it back on after you have set Cellular Data to Off.  Ckuan is correct though about having some per minute received or outgoing call and text charges.  For one example, if you were traveling in Canada but didn't have a Canada Plan you would pay about 89 cents per minute and 50 cents per send / receive Text.

  • Roaming in Canada, Niagara Falls

I've been reading different and confusing reviews.  What is the coverage while visiting Niagara Falls?  I read that I could text, call US without roaming.  I read that if I get too far from the river/falls I won't have coverage.  If we are traveling there, will we be charged roaming fees/charges?  Can we text one another while there without charges?  Can we call home to family back home without roaming charges?  Where does the line end at US border and how far in Canadian boarder until we are charged roaming rates?

        Hello bwatlas
These are all very good questions that should be asked before travelling to avoid any roaming charges. Once you are past the American boarder any calls or data usage will be consider as roaming charges.  While you are in Canada you can still text without any additional charges, as long as they are not iMessages since these are ran thru data.  We have a great Canada/Mexico plan that gives you 1000 minutes to use while you are traveling in Canada. What plan do you currently have?  Check out our Global Support page for additional information: http://vz.to/17KseUf

  • Mac Mail in Canadal

When I travel to Canada I am not able to send email through mac mail. I get a message saying can not connect to mail server. Although I can receive new emails from all my accounts I can not send through any of them.
    Any ideas??? Thanks!

When you are in Canada what ISP do you use? They may be blocking access to other SMTP servers. Be sure you configure you Mail account's SMTP server to use Password authentication. I've found that usually works when I'm in Canada using Shaw Cable to access my US mail servers. If that doesn't work, then get the domain name of the SMTP server used by your ISP and use it instead. That definitely should work.
