Treat JPEG files next to RAW files as separate photos? or How do you not download JPG's

Environment:
LR 1.1
PC: Windows XP SP2, Dual Core 6600, 4GB RAM
Camera: Konica-Minolta 7D shooting RAW and JPG (CF card has 3 files for each frame, RAW, JPE, THM)
Although I Imported my RAW files with no problem, I discovered that the Import also copied the CF card's JPGs to the same folder as my RAW files on the hard drive. So I set out to figure out how to import RAW into LR without also downloading JPGs to my hard drive. I have not succeeded at that and have added a, Delete of the JPGs from my HD before synching Metadata step, to my workflow, but I DID find some truly weird behavior.
The File menu dropdown offers two ways to Import from the card.
1) Import Photos from device which goes directly to the Import dialog where I have preview ON.
2) Import photos from disk . . .which goes to a file display of the CF card for file selections before going to the Import dialog. (Required if you want JPG only)
Also, if I click on the Import button to the left of the tool bar I am given a dialog box to choose:
1) M\(Camera or Card Reader) or
2) Choose Files..
These correspond to the same options that the File menu offers.
My results:
If you want to Import only RAW files use the Device option.
If you want to Import only JPG where you have RAW on your CF card use the Disk option and only select JPGs(with or without the preference switch set).
If you want to Import both RAW and JPG use the Disk option with the Preference option ON and select both JPG and RAW files.
But, I assumed (my error) that I could, using the Disk option, mix and match JPG and RAW selections.
THEN the strange stuff . . .
If in the disk option with the preference switch set ON, I selected just RAW or both RAW & JPG files on the CF card in the file selection dialog, the Import dialog always showed BOTH RAW and JPG files in the preview. If then, in the Import dialog for any specific file, I selected a RAW or JPG but not both, selecting RAW Imported a JPG file and selecting JPG Imported a RAW file. No kidding.
I ran this test three times. I dont consider this a big problem because there is a way to get RAW only, JPG only and both when needed, but someone could look at the code before the next release. (Maybe the shell game goes away in Pirate mode.)
My biggest disappointment is I could not find a way to Import RAW without copying a second file to the same folder on my hard drive which I will need to delete later. Maybe, next release. (Please)
For the development team, I offer my thanks for your significant advancement of digital photography.
For those that get to the bottom of this post, remember Rule 5.

>Speaking of which, WHY would anyone want to import jpgs alongside raws in Lightroom? I can't see any reason, and they just take up disk space. Am I missing something?
I'm not as gifted at file editing as many of you are, and often the jpgs I get from Canon or Nikon are much nicer than the raws. Sometimes I am sufficiently pleased with the jpgs that I just toss the raws. Sometimes I want to play, and the jpgs give me a target to shoot for and try to surpass.
Only when I really blew the exposure, not too common anymore, do I really need the raws to save what should have been a really great shot.
I understand the arguement for raw files. I just haven't found that they are automatically better than the jpegs without a lot of tinkering.

  • Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files still imports and displays them as seperate images

Hi, I am taking RAW + JPEG files on a Nikon D810. The RAW files are saving to a CF (primary slot) and JPEGs to an Eye-Fi card (secondry slot). When I am importing into Lightroom 5 directly from the camera, even though I have 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files as seperate files' UNchecked in preferences, it still imports and displays them as seperate images. I am trying to import the JPEG as a sidecar file only to the RAW file as I have read about but this is not happening, any ideas why? Thanks

Well in Lightroom they are apart from each other before the actual import, all the JPGs list first then all the NEF files next. The same actual photo as the NEF or as the JPEG both have the same file name apart from the .JPG or .NEF so that is not the problem. The NEFs go to the CF card and the JPGs go to the EyeFi SD card, I think you are onto the issue but I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. I guess I need to change a setting on the D810 itself. There really doesn't seem to be any other settings apart from the RAW + JPEG vs only one or the other and allocating which card is primary for the RAWs and which card is secondry for the JPEGs. I really need the JPEGs to go to the EyeFi SD (secondary) for live iPad image viewing and not to the same primary card (CF) as the NEFs (RAWs) go. This does seem to be a typical setup so I would think it has been encountered before.
Thanks for your help any other advise is appreciated.

  • Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files.

I'm using Panasonic LX3 with its RAW format (a supported RAW format since sometimes with iPhoto '09 already)
When I choose to Photo Stream my images after import with iPhoto '11, it says "Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files."
My files are RAW formats so why can't I photo stream it?!
Is there something I can get around or need to wait for Apple to support this?!

You don;t have a preset set. What you are seeing is normal behavior when importing Raw files.
What you see at first is the camera produced JPG preview imbedded in the Raw file. Aperture puts this up while it decodes the actual Raw data. This JPG has all the special settings and enhancements set on the camera and is basically the image that would be produced if you were shooting JPG.
As a rule none of the settings on the camera (apart from the basics) are applied to the Raw file though some of the newer cameras have settings that could affect the data stored in the Raw file.
This is a often asked question by those just getting into Raw and you can search the discussions here for other answers to this question.
Given the capability of today's cameras, especially the high-end ones, a lot of users have decided to abandon Raw as unnecessary  if they are happy with the images the camera produces. It's all a matter of personal needs.

Than LR should have brought in the RAW files as well. ACR is the RAW
processing engine used by LR under the covers so anything not supported by
ACR would not be supported by Lightroom.
Are you shooting RAW plus JPEG? By default, Lightroom will stack then
unless you tell it not to. Check to see if there is a small badge on the
preview that looks like two sheets of paper with a number. That is how
Lightroom indicates a stack. You can unstack them by clicking on the badge.
There is also a menu item to stack/unstack photos. Otherwise, I would have
to research but not sure why Lightroom would ignore the RAW photos but
    still import the JPEGS.

  • Flat file Destination VS Raw file Destination ??

    Team ,
Can some help me understand few differences and similarities  between Flat File Destination and Raw File Destination ? Thanks in advance .
    Rajkumar Yelugu

    Hi,
    Please check these differences :-
Flat File Destination: The Flat File Destination component writes data out to a text file in one of the standard flat-file formats: delimited, fixed width, fixed width with row delimiter.
Raw File Destination: The Raw File Destination is all about raw speed. It is an entirely native format and can be exported and imported more rapidly than any other connection type, in part because the data doesn’t need to pass through a connection
    manager.

  • Jpeg link to original raw files bridge or lightroom?

I have recently exported jpegs and given them to a librarian to add metadata. He used Bridge to add the metadata to the jpegs. Is there a simple way to give him the original raw files and they will automatically link together?
The filenames have been changed. I am hoping there is a residual filename in the metadata.
    Thanks, Rob

Not that I know of.  And with a new name it is a new file.
There will only be old name if he did batch rename and had the box check to preserve current file name.

  • How can I open multiple files as Photoshop Raw files at the same time for Photoshop CS6 extended on a PC?

I am trying to open 20-25 files at the same time as Photoshop Raw [*.RAW] files.
The only way I can open multiple files is if i leave the file type as All Formats. When I change it to  Photoshop Raw [*.RAW], the files a deselected.

Use bridge. Select all the files then press ctrl-r or cmd-r to load the selected files into camera raw.
If you try this in Photoshop use File>Open As then for file type choose camera raw. (I have not tested open as for opening multiple files)

  • .Tiff files show as RAW files

I have an Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom and have just shot some .Tiff files and loaded them into my 5th G. iPod via the Apple camera connector. They have shown up as RAW files for some unknown reason so I can't view them on the iPod. What is going on and what is the solution?

Thank you for replying. That is right, I am quite suspicious of memory - my laptop is full to the brim and I suspect that this may affect available memory and cause some problems in LR. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about computers to be certain.
The card reader - quite simple: the card reader is the same, whether I save the files to the internal or external drives. I put the SD card in it, then copy the files and paste them where I want them. When done, I then open the LR and synchronize the folder. When I copy and paste files to the internal drive, the images look fine in LR; when I copy and paste them into the external drive, 80% of them come up visually corrupted in LR. Since the same card reader is used in both cases, and the files are OK when saved internally, I am assuming it is not the card reader.
So, basically, when I became aware of the problem, I tried copying and saving the same file both internally and externally from the card reader, in order to verify what was going on. That is how the same file (more than one, actually) ended up on three different drives.
Right now, my instinct is to copy everything to an external drive and clear some space on the internal one. I am very apprehensive though - what if something is causing file corruption on the external drives - in that case I will be corrupting everything when I migrate the files. Hence my previous question - are the files actually corrupted, or do they simply appear corrupted in LR because of memory issues? As I said, I don't know enough about this to be certain and do not know what to do.

  • Jpg files produced from RAW files

I use PSE 12.  I shoot RAW photos and use the Organizer to upload the photos from my camera to the computer.  The organizer produces a jpg file with me doing anything.  How do I turn off this unwanted freature?

I'm pretty sure the Organizer isn't the reason you have JPG files in this case.
One possibility is that on import, you have turned on an option, like automatic red-eye removal (actually, I don't have PSE12 but I know that earlier versions of PSE did that)
Another possibility is that you have (accidentally) set your camera to shoot RAW+JPG

  • RAW files: View embedded JPEG next to RAW file

I would like the opportunity to view the JPEG thumbnail that is embedded in my Nikon NEF files, so I can see how the camera's adjustments look, and possibly use that while making my own adjustments. I know the embedded JPEG is tiny, but this might still be a useful feature.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but this is exactly my question.
Can I access a camera embedded JPG as a reference. I know I can't use it for the basis of editing but I would like to see it just the same. I know some other tools can do this, but can LR2 show that JPG.
Ideally it would be an X-Y comparison to my current image.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

  • Jpeg Displays pick up Raw file sxif info when displayed

After creating a jpeg images as the last part of a raw -> psd workflow I noticed that the jpegs were not displaying correctly in CS5's bridge.
This can be corrected by opening the jpeg in RAW, setting everything to 0, and clicking on DONE.  This erases the info about how I processed the CR2 file - but is a REAL drag.
Am I missing some setting somewhere to fix this oddity?

By the way I spelled Exif wrong.
What I mean is that, if e.g. I increase an image's exposure by 1 stop in raw, process the image, then the final jpeg is displayed overexposed by 1 stop.
It displays correctly (i.e. like the psd file it was created from) if, as I say, I reload the Jpg and UNDO the saved info (that the file was processed with a +1 exposure in raw).
    Thanks for your interest.

  • XMP files for non RAW files **PLEASE!!**

This is useless if I cannot write the image adjustments that I make out to matching XMP files.
How can I move files/folders between machines???
So PLEASE add XMP sidecar file support for non RAW formats.
OR give us the ability to "export" a folder or files.. like in Aperture.

    Lee Jay,
    Thanks for that info!
Since I did not see the XMP files I assumed...
I just did a test and sure enough, the XMP data is written into the JPG file!
On my mac I copied the file to another name, imported it and the changes were there as well as the ability to modify the changes.
Further, for the geeks like me, I did a
    "strings file.jpg | more"
command and was able to see the XMP data.
    Thanks!
Edit to add: This is even better than Aperture projects and even separate XMP files!

No, that's not currently possible.  A .mpkg installer package can be opened automatically, because it is just a document opened by Apple's installer.  As such, it cannot run any third-party code without user intervention.  It's possible an installer might not require a password (though then it wouldn't be able to install in Applications), but would still require the user to follow through.
Didn't mean to restrict what I was saying only to an .mpkg installer package (the current avenue of attack this current Trojan is using.) Just meant that it seems to me that where a download of any kind automatically follows from clicking a link, this might be an exploitable first level of weakness for someone who finds a way to write code that bypasses quarantine, admin authentication and elevates to root. Of course, would hope that would be very difficult. But Apple seems constantly to be patching against this kind of possibility, so it doesn't seem completely out of the question. I don't know enough to know how completely out of the question it is.
And, those still using Safari with Tiger, unsupported going on two years, would seem especially vulnerable.
At least, Firefox alerts you to a download and gives you the option to cancel.
