Tried everything I can find, iMac won't start up!

Yesterday, my iMac told me there were new updates to be installed, and some of them required the computer to restart. So I clicked ok to update and restart, everything went along normally until after the updates, when it tried to restart, it won't get past the white screen with the gray apple logo and the little spinning wheel underneath it. I have been searching these forums all day looking for answers and trying anything I've found that I think might help, and nothing's working.
The closest I've come is this: I put in the install disc (1), and tried to restart while holding option. This allowed me to click on the disc and start it up from that, and I went into disk utilities to try and repair the disk, as suggested in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8807992&#8807992, started by someone who seemed to be having a similar problem.
When I tried to "Repair Disk," it said "The Disc "Macintosh HD" could not be unmounted."
I tried "Verify Disk," and this is what it said in the little box (everything in bold was in red on my screen):
Performing live verification
Checking journaled HFS Plus Volume
Checking extents overflow file
*Invalid leaf record count*
(It should be 198 instead of 187)
Checking catalog file
*Incorrect block count for file pcsd.pub*
(It should be 16 instead of 17)
*Invalid sibling link*
*Volume check failed*
*Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed*.
Then a box poppped up saying:
First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Also as suggested in that linked thread, I then tried to "use the Restore tab in Disk Utility to make a full copy of my internal drive volume to an external drive volume," but it told me "Restore Failure, Could not restore - read only file system." Does this mean my external is read-only? It is brand new and has never been used, just plugged in for the first time to do this. Do I need to do something to the external to make it work? Is there anything I can do short of erasing and re-installing everything?? I'm completely at a loss here, and I'm sorry this is so long but I wanted to make all information available. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Would that have worked if I had tried it before the "archive and install"? Because that is what I tried next and it didn't work, and I'm just wondering if it didn't work BECAUSE I tried to do the Archive and Install first? Or if it just never would've worked because my hard drive's messed up?
I'm just wondering because after I got the last response, I called Apple Care to see if there was ANYthing else I could do before having to either erase everything or actually haul it down to the Apple store, and it's the Apple care guy who told me to try the Archive and Restore first. So I'm just a bit annoyed if this could've been avoided by simply doing a new install first, if it's the Archive and Install that ruined everything...

I have tried everything I can find online to correct this.  Nothing works and all I can find online is dated 2008.  Surely Apple has found a cure for this problem by now.  This happened with my hp Photosmart Premium c309a as well.  I thought it was a printer problem but It's happening now with the 7510 that is only a week old.  And please, if you have a cure, don't explain in high tech computer language.  I'm ok with the computer but not that up on high tech stuff.  Thanks.

It is connected wirelessly.  The other printer was connected with a USB.  Getting it to print again---usually by just turning printer off and back on again.  This usually results in getting 1 page printed.  Then I have to do it again.  I have deleted printer and reinstalled.  I have changed IP from automatic to manual.  I unplugged printer for a short time (1-2 minutes) and plugged back in.  I have restarted both IMAC and printer after each process.  This is really frustrating and time consuming, driving me nuts.

I would instead say you have a problem since nearly all IPs work as advertised.  IF you do have a bad phone, take it into an Apple store and get a replacement.  Hope you didn't jailbreak your phone though as Apple probably will tell you, you broke it, you fix it.

  • I have some books in Ibook which have not downloaded and I am unable to delete them.  I have tried everything I can find on the net but nothing works.

Some books I purchased and downloaded free in my library in Itunes on my PC dont download properly when synced with my ipad, they only half-download.  I then tried deleting them from ibook on my ipad but they just wont delete no matter method I try.  I have found going to my pc and dragging them out of the library onto the desktop they show up as a pdf so I put them into bluefire reader on my ipad using the ap section on my pc.  Dont know what is happening here.  Since I downloaded the new version of itunes seem to be having lots of problems.  I have sifted through everything I can find on the net and tried some things but nothing seems to work.

Beads63, have you rebooted the router, this is the most common fix.  If you have and it has not worked have you any new electric items that could interfere or changed your set up at all?

    Hey pepperfromnl,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I'd take a look at this article:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
It'll guide you through troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue and get your computer to recognize the iPod nano again.

  • Blinking #1 G5 diagnostic LED. I've already tried everything I can find info on.

I have a 2005 Imac G5, non isight, that I replaced the capacitors and PSU. It was repaired and running fine for about a month when the other day, my wife went to use it. She woke it up, and was working online fine. She was then needing to print something and as we have not acquired a usb router, she unplugged her Logic USB key to plug in the printer. Then she couldn't find her cursor, then the cooling fans spooled up to a high speed and she turned off the computer with the power button. (hard shut-down) Then the computer wouldn't turn back on. Nothing. No spool up, no "bong", nothing.
I removed the rear panel and plugged in the power cord to check the diagnostic leds.
#1 was illuminated, #2 only blinked when power button pushed. OK. Possible cap problem again as this is what it did when the caps went bad before.
I disassembled the unit and removed the logic board, finding some expected loose solder joints. (those joints are tough to solder properly)  I re-soldered, all the loose joints and tested all the connections with my meter. None of the all recently replaced caps showed any sign of damage. Then I reassembled everything and reconnected the power cord.
Now, the #1 led is BLINKING. I disassembled it all again to recheck everything and also performed a voltage test on all PSU pins. All check out correctly.
Reassembled again. Same result. #1 led is blinking and nothing happens when I push the power button. I cannot find ANY accurate posts on what this means.
Please don't respond by saying "just take it to the Apple store", etc.
I need a serious Mac expert answer.

Ok. Here's where it gets even wierder. I whacked on the PSU with my hand and the #1 LED lit solid, but nothing happens whane I push the internal power button. So...
I switched out the PSU to the other one that I replaced in the course of repairing the Mac the FIRST time.
Now... Both #1 AND #2 LEDs are blinking, albeit #1 is blinking brighter. AND the fans slowly spool. The PSU is making pulsing sounds with the power to the fans being pulsed in sequence with the sound from the PSU. The pulsing is in groups of 3 to 6, seemingly randomly.
    Can anybody help me?

  • Start up disc full, tried everything I can find, no changes, help?

I posted this somewhere earlier, sorry for repeating, but I can't find it.  AFter getting the start up disc full message, I backed up everything on an external hard drive with Time Machine, and additionally, copied everything from iphoto on to the same drive, different partition. I have freed up tons of memory, but no change to the start up disc when I check it in the activity monitor area.  I have restarted it a number of times, emptied all trash, and checked the console log for messages. I see lots of "failed to count the number of files in the "/system/library/memory/startupItems": No such directory.  Other than that, nothing popped out at me. I also ran the diagnostics for the disc and repaired all permission scripts, (I think that's what it said) no help.
I am grateful for any help, could it be a virus or an error I can't detect?
    Thanks,
    Veronica

I have a canon Vixia HF M301 camcorder and I can't get it to import videos to my Macbook Pro.  I have read and tried everything I can find and still no luck.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please make sure that you are using Transfer Utility, which is a program that is made by Pixela Corporation.  It came with your camcorder along with another program called VideoBrowser.

  • IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update

After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected.  I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally.  I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected.  Anyone else experience this?

My iPod Touch 4th generation just won't download apps. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help!

Hi, when you say you have tried everything... I presume you have gone into Settings > Store and logged out and back in with your account details?
You could try purchasing an app via iTunes to see if its an issue with the device or the account you're using.
    Hope this helps.

  • Z77A-GD65 build won't post, I've tried everything I can think of...

    Hello all,
    Here are the parts:
    MSI Z77A-GD65 mobo
    Intel i5-3570K LGA 1155
    MSI N560GTX-TiHawk graphics card
    Samsung 30nm DDR3 RAM 2x 4gb
    Corsair H100 cooling
    Samsung 830SSD
Silverstone ST1000 1000watt power supply (this and my HDD are the only components from my old build and the HDD isn't attached)
I plug everything in, check and recheck, and all the fans and lights turn on for maybe a second and shut off with no beeps. I've RMA'd the board and processor to no avail. I've been breadboarding the build since the first time it failed to start. I checked the power supply with the paper clip test and on my old build to see if it was the problem and it was not as far as I can tell. It still functions as it should with the old build.
I followed multiple instructions to trouble shoot this problem and haven't gotten anywhere. I've tried with just the CPU, H100 and a stick of RAM and still get the same issue. I've tried both sticks separately in each socket and had the same issue, as well as a completely different set of sticks. I've switch the CPU cooler from the H100 to the stock one with no results. Reseated everything. Reset the CMOS. This build has never posted so nothing is overclocked and nothing has had any firmware updates. I've tried everything I can think of to get this problem fixed and I can't find the solution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I should probably note that my old build is pretty old so most of the new parts aren't compatible with it so I can't update firmware and such on my own if those are possible issues.
    Thanks.
PS. Posting from my IPad so I apologize for any typos.

Are you saying that this is a new board and processor after having the same problems on the previous parts ?
I bought all the parts for this build, had the issue and though it was mobo caused so I sent that back. Then I had the same issue with the replacement so i sent the processor back. Same issue with the replace ment processor.
Quote from: xmad on 27-July-12, 19:37:58
Just to ask a probably silly question, but does that old psu have the proper connectors? Are the 4 pin connectors near the cpu filled? Is the backplate on backwards and shorting something?
Yes, it has all the right ports and connections. The backplate is correct as far as I can tell.
After talking with MSI and a local computer shop my current best guess is that I got a board with an old version of the bios that isn't compatible with the processor I have. That means to bios will need to be flash updated, something I have no idea how to do. My local computer shop said they could do it for 65$ but with no garuntees if something goes wrong. So, I'm going to send it to MSI and have them do it.
Thanks for the ideas guys, if you can think of anything else let me know.
