Tried everything I can think of -- can't connect to Internet

Please excuse me -- I should have posted this here, instead of another discussion. No one has even attempted a reply; I hope I can get some advise here. Thanks for ANY advice.
I'm able to get onto the Internet by piggybacking on a nearby open LAN.( I am not a new user, but I'm not a computer scientist.)
This is a desperation act because I can no longer connect to the Internet via Earthlink, my ISP. I have checked every aspect, physical connections to switching from my G5 to my iBook and back again to configure my Airport Extreme base station. I have even switched AEs. I have changed my own network stats. I have replaced the phone wire. I have changed routers. I have even changed modems, but I was unable to program it, thanks to missing instructions mostly meant for Windows users anyway.
I am using a Broadmax DSL modem from Earthlink, and have spent close to two hours on the phone with 3 techies. They really tried to help.
When I mentioned my phone line was from Verizon I heard ununderstandable muttering. The paranoid thought came to me: Was Verizon sabotaging Earthlink to get its customers to switch? How's that for paranoia? I even called Verizon to switch to them, but they are total incompetents -- the techies are good, if you get a good one, but the rest of the outfit haven't yet figured out what to do with two tin cans and a length of string.
The Earthlink techies and I finally agreed it might be a bad modem and another is on the way to me.
I am not confident.
My first and original modem, the Broadmax, could always be fixed by going through the unplugging it for a few seconds or hours, and then I'd have no problems for many months, until I went away and unplugged it. Getting back on the Internet was a nightmare.
The phone line, DSL, is OK. I can make voice calls over it, but the DSL just isn't there.
I may have programmed the Airport express bae staion incorrectly, except that the Internet DSL modem connection quit literally all by itself. After months of working, it just "quit." The modem async PPPoe light blinks signalling no sync. (I don't use PPPoe and it's not checked on my Network pane.)
Having tracked all, and I mean ALL, the usual suspects, I am on the point of hiring an Apple guy to come in and help me. But I would appreciate any advice from someone knowledgeable about this situation.

Yes, I have MAC filtering on. I had it off until a few hours ago. Neither seems to make a difference. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I also had made everything simpler, turning off WEP. Turned it back on. Neither made a difference. The only things I can now consider, it seems, are a bad modem or wrong AE programming.

  • Why does can't my mac mini connect to internet

    I'm running Mac OXx 10.6.8, I recently updated my software and I am now unable to connect to the internet. I am connect via ethernet. Network in System Preferences reads "Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address ..." When I try to open a website I receive, for instance, "[Browser's] connection attempt to www.url.com was rejected" or "Safari can't open the page "http://url" because Safari can't connect to the server "url".

    System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
    The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

    If using Wifi/Airport...
    Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
    For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app

        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file.     This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Stuck at Grey Screen Tried everything I could think of, still nothing.

    I think I know what caused the problem, but at the moment I haven't been able to fix it. This first started after I installed quicktime. Naturally I restarted after it installed and I have been stuck at this grey screen ever since. I've tried running fsck, I've tried using the Leopard disk and I've gone in and used the verify disk and it says "The Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK". It's the disk permissions thats giving me trouble. It wont let me verify disk permissions, it gets stuck and just keeps going. So, in turn it won't let me repair disk permissions because it first has to verify them and that is where it gets stuck. I should add that I went in and tried to remove QuickTime Player.app from the applications directory and it didn't let me, I'm not sure if I was typing it in wrong but it just won't work. Can anyone help me?

    Thanks. You actually have been a lot of help to me. Although nothing is working yet. I have come up with an idea that might work. If it doesn't I'm just going to have to reinstall Leopard on top of all my files. The most important files such my music, videos, and family photos. I might be able to retrieve from my iPod. I have the school documents from this semester on a usb drive. And although I would really like to keep my work from past semesters it isn't really necessary. The applications I can track down and reinstall no problem. Thanks so much for your help. I'll let you know how everything works out.

  • HT5364 My Safari 6 is really slow. Tried everything. I think...

    Safari 6 keeps lagging and it takes forever to upload most websites, it doesn't matter if it's this Comunity Support page or a website with flash, YouTube or otherwise. And if I try using YouTube (for example) once the website is finally uploaded and ready, I can expect to wait for the video to start for at least three times as long as the website upload. And the video then play for about 3 seconds and it needs to buffer, for about 10 seconds to play another 3 seconds. If I try opening up a newspaper website the article thumb pictures usualy never show at all.
    I tried Reseting Safari, didn't help.
    I emptied the Caches, didn't help.
    I changed the DNS, didn't help.
    I deleted certificates that were out of date, didn't help
    Everything on the Mac (MacBook Pro) is updated.
    I don't have any fancy Plug-Ins or Apps.
    I have fast Internet.
    There's nothing wrong with my Wifi as I've got other stuff hooked up to it that runs smoothly, including my Iphone and iPad.
    I don't have too many things hooked up to my Internet Connection either as other people (visiting) use my Internet (with their Mac and computers) and theirs run smoothly as well.
    Lastly I'd like to add that I haven't had any problems with my MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion or Safari 6 until this problem started. And I have restarted the Mac after every above mentioned attempt at solving the problem.

    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. 
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands. 
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply. 
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: 
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) 
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

    i've made a catalogue of mistakes.  I've had an Overdrive app for ages to access library books which was great but this is what happened-
    1.  Suddenly a message kept coming up each time I logged in saying Adobe acct ........... is saved in your overdrive acct do you want to deauthorise or authorise.   I kept clicking on authorise but thought it might be better to deauthorise and authorise it properly in settings.  I tried this but my Adobe ID didn't work- nothing came up to say it was wrong but I kept getting thrown back to the authorisation screen and could not get any further or download books.  I did check my password was okay by signing into my Adobe account and it was the only one I had which I had used when I upgraded to I.o.s.7 and it was fine.
    I tried logging in and out, resetting my overdrive acct and eventually deleted the overdrive app and then reinstating it but nothing worked.
    2.  I decided if I got a new Adobe acct using my google email address then authorising the Adobe reader through this  might work.  However. It all seemed to go well I created the account then put all the details into my overdrive acct.  thought this was going well but I got a message as I tried to download a book 'fulfil code 2004' , saying another ID could not be used.  I'm now stuck it won't allow me to try my original ID.
    Can anyone help help me out of this mess and can I delete an Adobe ID once created please?

  • Search and Replace... tried everything, no luck, think it's quite simple!

    Hi Guys,
    I'm trying to do  some editing on many many html files. As it wouldn't be realistic in the slightest to do it manually I'm trying to use the search and replace feature in DW, but it's proving quite difficult. I've looked at everything available on this forum and others with no luck.
    So I'm trying to replace a huge block of code, but as the code is different in all the files I have to use the wildcard. So I match up the code at the front and the block which is the same in all the files I'm trying to change and insert [^"]*. For example, if I wanted to change the meta content  I search for:
    <meta name="description" content="[^"]*" />
    It doesn't find it.
    The other blocks of code are much bigger and it's the same story. If I copy the code in which I am looking to replace (without the wild card) and search it doesn't find it, but if I click off 'use regular expression' it does find it, so this leads me to believe that it may be something to do with the special characters that is in the code that I am trying to replace, but I am unsure how to go about excluding these..

    I'm the very first to admit that I STINK at Reg Ex.  It's a totally foreign language to me. 
    Whenever possible, I use the Search Tag with Attributes feature.
    So let's say you need to find all meta tags that contain attribute "name" & the content is different in each one.
    Find In: Current document (to test)
    Search: Specific Tag         meta
    With Attribute                      name = [any value]
    Action:  Set Attribute          content   to: type your new values here....
    Replace All.
