TRIED EVERYTHING/NO LUCK with Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools 29.97 to 24p

I read an article that was on Ken Stones site. It said that, basically you CAN'T
take a clip that is at 29.97 and has 3:2 pulldown in it, and get it to actual 24 progressive frames? Is this true? Has ANYONE out there actually removed pulldown CORRECTLY with footage shot at 24, then transferred to 29.97?
I've tried all options with Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine, and I always wind up with some interlacing.
My QT clip has a 3:2 cadence, one can frame through it and see this.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone know a procedure that can get me to 24 progressive frames. Is there a 3rd party piece of software out there?
Any relies appreciated.

Well then, that is your problem. Those aren't reverse telecin-able. What are reversable are DV tapes that you captured at 29.97...in the DV/NTSC codec.
Are you working with Digital Intermediates? Or footage telecined to tape?
Typical Telecine to Tape workflow is:
Telecine to DVCAM
Lab provides DVCAM and Flex file to you.
Open Cinema Tools. Import Flex file and export batch Capture list.
Import batch capture list into FCP.
Batch Capture the DV footage.
Reverse telecine the footage with Cinema Tools.
Edit.
What exactly are you doing? Where did these files come from? What is your workflow?

  • Problems with reverse telecine in Cinema tools

I am trying to reverse telecine some 24p footage I shot on a panasonic dvx. I have captured several tapes of footage in FCP 7 (as 29.97 footage to get the full data stream), then I have been sending clips to cinema tools to be reverse telecined, then bringing them back into FCP and editing on a 23.98 timeline. So far, I have used this workflow with three of my tapes and they all look fine in the end, but with one tape in particular I took all of the same steps but am having problems. When I bring clips from that tape into cinema tools and select "reverse telecine" it seems as if Cinema Tools is working and processing the footage, but at the very end the window with that clip suddenly disappears and no .rev file of the footage is created. Cinema tools remains open, only that window with the footage that was being processed is gone. I have tried recapturing the footage, renaming it, and double-checking my capture settings in FCP but have yet to figure out why these clips from this tape in particular will not be reverse telecined. Any suggestions about what I could be doing wrong?

I am almost positive I shot them the exact way, although the scene file dial on the dvx is pretty easily changed, so maybe if I bumped it during filming...
So to check, I looked at the footage before it was reverse telecined on an external moniter and it looks the same as all my other footage--with about 2 interlaced frames for every five frames. Is there another way I could check?
I'll try your compressor idea and see if that will remove the 3:2 pulldown! Thanks for the advice!

  • Reverse Telecine Question (Cinema Tools)

    Dear board members,
I have footage that was shot with Panasonic AG-HVX200 in 1080i60 (29.97fps), but with 24p function with a 2:3 pulldown. When I ingest it in FCP through Log and Transfer this footage (for some peculiar reason) shows up as 1080p30. I also need to remove pulldown to make it 24 (23,98) FPS.
    My workaround is as follows:
    1) I export these files from FCP as DVCPRO HD 1080i60 QT files.
    2) then I send these new "masters" to Cinema Tools, where I do Reverse Telecine process.
The results looks fine, but I just want to double-check my settings in Cinema Tools, because the batch for this job contains thousands of clips and there is no room for mistake.
Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools settings:
    Capture Mode:
    Field 1 - Field 2
    Fields:
    AA
    File:
    New (smaller)
    Frames:
    Conform to: 23.98 FPS
    Standard Upper/Lower: Checked
Thank you very much for your time and (hopefully) helpful comments.
    Regards,
    Tim

I just did a test yesterday with MXFX software and there is a visible recompression in the resulting file. I compared the same frame (from different clips) processed through Cinema Tools and MXFX and also compared it to the original frame and MXFX clearly does something to the image (recompression or noise reduction, whatever you want to call it). Contacted them about it, they said they will look at it. Anyhow, the result is pretty visible at 200% zoom. Anyhow, that made me decide against MXFX.
    Thanks for a suggestion though.

  • Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools

My 24p fcp project is finished and I need to reverse telecine it to get rid of the ugly interlacing. How do I do this?
I've tried importing the movie into Cinema Tools and it keeps crashing. When I import the whole thing as a single clip (QT Movie), the Reverse Telecine button isn't available.
Also, why can't I import an mpeg-2 clip?
I'm using Cinema Tools 2.2, in case this has something to do with it.
    Thanks in advance.

Oh, and Mr. Gilman was saying that there will be interlacing no matter what if it's on DVD or Beta? Why is this?
It's what I was trying to tell you when I said If tape, you need the pulldown anyway. If DVD, the pulldown would be added by the player.
You have to understand where the interlacing is coming from. It is coming from the pulldown inserted to bring the fps from 24 to 30...
Google reveals these Pulldown explanation pages:
    http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/#24pRecording
    http://home.aol.com/ajaynejr/pulldown.htm
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p
    http://www.zerocut.com/tech/pulldown.html
    http://www.denecke.com/24pinfo.htm
here's a visual representation of 24P with pulldown added to be recorded on a 29.97 tape (this is how all feature films are broadcast on NTSC)
You can see from this image that two frames BC and CD are interlaced - that is, they are made up of two fields taken from different frames. When a DVD has 24fps material on it, the DVD player automatically inserts this pulldown to bring it up to 30 fps so it can be shown on a regular TV.
Now. I believe your problem may stem from an incorrect field order, but first I want to ask - When you created your export of your movie that you fed into DVDSP to make your DVD, did you try importing it into FCP and playing it back on your TV. Did it look okay then?

  • I give. No success with reverse telecine...

    Here's the scenario...
I have footage that was shot on Super-8 and telecined to Mini-DV. I have no flex file, etc., and no specific cadence information.
One would assume that I could select an arbitrary frame and simple rotate through the obvious permutations (<F1-F1|F2-F1> <AA|BB|etc>) and end up with a properly reversed 24fps clips.
However, even the best results still exhibit interlacing artifacts every three frames.
I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that others have the same issue.
I'm placed a sample clip at...
    http://nedron.net/av/revtc/00.dv
This is from the "master" Mini-DV tape and is about 25 meg.
Anyone with a broadband connection want to take a look and see if they can correctly reverse the telecine on this? Hopefully, using something relatively common like Cinema Tools or After Effects, etc. My hardware options are pretty limited for the time being.
    -David

Try using the reverse telecine in Final Cut: Tools->Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine. I went through this with 1080i footage, not DV. Couldn't get a clean reverse out of CT directly. But this seemed to work. I suspect that FCP understands the pulldown correctly and then tells CT how to do it. But try it and see if it works for you. Just make sure you copy your original file and work on the copy in FCP, because CT will overwrite the file and there are no warnings or options. You should see the property of the clip change in FCP from 29.97 to 23.976. Then go through frame-by-frame and see if it worked.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with reversing telecine pull-down

I'm preparing to edit a feature film shot on S16mm. The film was telecined to HDCAM SR at 23.98 for the online. Than down-converted to DVCAM at 29.97 for the offline. I imported the flex files into FCP and captured a bin. Than ran the batch reverse telecine following all instructions in Cinema Tools manual. Clips were converted to 23.98, but when played in FCP strobe or flicker. I cannot for the life of me figure out why. The A-Frames hit on 0's and 5's and that's what all the clips start at.
Note, the strobing or flickering only happens when going out to an external NTSC monitor, not in FPC viewer or canvas.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I see you're on FCP5... if you're about to bust into a feature edit you really might want to move up to FCP6. It's a bit more mature all around.
We just did a Super35mm project (offline in ProRes, and then a 2K DPX-based online) in FCP6, albeit with a slightly different workflow.
I assume you did the HDCAM SR to DVCAM downconversion because you didn't have an HDCAM SR deck and/or HD-SDI input mechanism for the system you're editing on, but you did have a firewire DVCAM deck or something similar.
If the issue was introduced during the HDCAM-SR to DVCAM step, perhaps that's where the issue lies. You may want to try to eliminate that possibility.
Other than that, I'd go through and verify that you are in fact looking at the right fields in the right order. Use whatever mechanisms you have available to you to view the fields independently of each other.
Also, if you're outputting 23.98 video to an external monitor, does that monitor support that output format? Or are you having telecine frames inserted during playback?
There's a limited amount of things that could be wrong here. If your canvas is accurately displaying all of the frames and looks normal, and there's no frames "bleeding fields" into each other when you step through it, and you're sure you're not MISSING any frames or fields, then the telecine frames must have gotten removed properly, that's the only logical conclusion. If that's the case, then your problem is either a bug (possible), a field dominance issue (which you seem to have ruled out) or it's in your external video monitoring system/path. i.e. monitor doesn't like the video it's getting, hardware doesn't support the video signal, something is flat out broken, etc.
That said, HDCAM-SR to ProRes or ProResHQ is a pretty reasonable mastering format for S16-acquired content. If all else fails, go rent an HDCAM-SR deck for the weekend, capture the whole project to ProRes/ProRes HQ, and boom, you're in your online @ 23.98. Just skip the offline altogether. You've already got your FLX files so you could batch the whole job pretty quickly. Storage is cheap.

  • Issue with Reverse Telecine

I just finished a short film that I shot over two shoot dates. My cinematographer accidentaly shot 1 in 24P Advanced mode and the other in 24P Standard mode.
I brought my 24P standard footage in to cinematool and did a reverse telecine in order to convert the footage to 24 frames. I am having a problem now as the dialogue is out of synch.
If anyone has any advice on how I can fix this problem, it would be great.
    Thanks,

I have resolved the issue for the moment, I just manually moved the sound timeline and it seems to have brought the audio back into sync.

  • Search and Replace... tried everything, no luck, think it's quite simple!

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to do  some editing on many many html files. As it wouldn't be realistic in the slightest to do it manually I'm trying to use the search and replace feature in DW, but it's proving quite difficult. I've looked at everything available on this forum and others with no luck.
So I'm trying to replace a huge block of code, but as the code is different in all the files I have to use the wildcard. So I match up the code at the front and the block which is the same in all the files I'm trying to change and insert [^"]*. For example, if I wanted to change the meta content  I search for:
    <meta name="description" content="[^"]*" />
    It doesn't find it.
The other blocks of code are much bigger and it's the same story. If I copy the code in which I am looking to replace (without the wild card) and search it doesn't find it, but if I click off 'use regular expression' it does find it, so this leads me to believe that it may be something to do with the special characters that is in the code that I am trying to replace, but I am unsure how to go about excluding these..
    Any help much appreciated,
    Brian

I'm the very first to admit that I STINK at Reg Ex.  It's a totally foreign language to me.
Whenever possible, I use the Search Tag with Attributes feature.
So let's say you need to find all meta tags that contain attribute "name" & the content is different in each one.
Find In: Current document (to test)
    Search: Specific Tag         meta
With Attribute                      name = [any value]
Action:  Set Attribute          content   to: type your new values here....
    Replace All.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes won't start in Win7 - tried everything, no luck

I've had an iPod Nano for only a few months. iTunes worked one day, then the next it does not.
    I'm running Win7, 64bit, iTunes version 10.6.0.40 (the latest).
When I attempt to launch iTunes (from the Start menu) I can see iTunes.exe briefly launch in the Task Manager. I also see AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe and distnoted.exe in the Task Manager as well.
All three of these close by themselves. No error message, nothing on screen, iTunes does not even display an icon on the task bar. If I didn't have the Task Manager open it would look like nothing is happening (which really it isn't).
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, now on the latest version of iTunes. I've tried the Repair option in the Control Panel, I've tried running as Admin... nothing works.
I can see my Nano as a drive in my Computer, but of course can't do anything with it. If I plug the nano into my work computer, also Win7 64, iTunes runs without a problem.
What else is there to do? Any suggestions? iTunes is just now a waste of space on my computer.....
    Thanks!
    Karl.

I just tried the Win7 msconfig option, again with absolutely no luck, and the same 3 processes starting then closing in the task manager.
Looks like so many people having this issue, and nothing from apple to fix it!!!

  • My macbook pro will not  start up. I get the apple logo and the little  start up waiting avitar. I tried everything including starting with my back up drive and nothing happens.

My macbook pro mid 2012 will not start up. I was running bitdefender and when I went to see if it was done, I had the apple logo and the loading (winding circle) on the screen. I can not get out of this. I used my back up external drive and it did nothing. It did light up.

    samnleosgpa,
you may have faulty RAM. Are you able to boot into your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test (“AHT”)? If so, try running it to see if it can detect a problem. If you’re not able to run its AHT, and you’ve upgraded your MacBook Pro’s RAM before, try reïnstalling its original RAM and see if you can get past the “-6002F” error code. If you aren’t able to run its AHT, and you haven’t upgraded its RAM or you no longer have its original RAM, then I’d recommend that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple store to have them diagnose the problem.

  • Blurred fields after reverse telecine

I am digitizing DVCAM tapes recorded at 29.97 (telecined from film @ 23.98) I'm cutting in a 23.98 timeline but need a correct database to go back to film. I do the normal procedure from Cinema Tools to reverse telecine, but when I bring the clip into the timeline, The A, B, C, D fields are blurred. The video plays fine, but it seems like something is wrong with the fields. Any ideas?

We shot 35 and are going back to film. The lab did the telecine and when Cinema Tools does the reverse, it converts it to 23.98, therefore I need to cut in a 23.98 timeline for it to match.
In regard to my workflow, this is how we have been doing it.
    Create a New Database
Import the .ale (or .flx) file into Cinema Tools
Export an FCP XML Batch List
Import the XML into FCP and Batch Capture at 29.97 from the DVCAM
Reverse Telecine using Cinema Tools *Under Tools within FCP*
Then I connect all the clips to the new media, etc..
My problem is not blurred frames, but the A1, B2, C1, D2 fields in the burn-in blur when within the sequence. The video plays fine, not choppy or anything, but the burn in numbers do not play correctly.
When I open the clip in the Viewer the burn-in numbers are OK.
Is this normal for a 23.98 sequence?

  • And yet another reverse telecine question. =)

Okay so I shot the footage in 24p advanced on a dvx100b. I batch reverse telecined in cinema tools. It worked fine except for the first frame of some of the final reverse telecined files. Only on some of the files (randomly) the first frame is interlaced. This only happened to some of the files and it is not really a big deal because there is nothing important usually in the first frame but it is a little worrying. Could it be because I didnt really pay attention to which of the 5 frame set (0-5/A-D frames where frame 3/C is the interlaced frame in 24p advanced) was captured as the first frame during capturing? I have heard that you must capture the 0/A frame as the first frame for reverse telecining/advanced pulldown removal to work. Is this true. Even if so, the whole clip other than the first frame is still fine so, any ideas?

Ive received an answer to this in another forum. It is due to the fact that cinema tools has no other field to combine with for the first frame depending on which of the 5 field sequence it started recording in. It is really no problem because it is only the very first frame that is affected.

  • Does Reverse Telecine with orig 24fps, trans to 29.97 ACTUALY WORK !!!

I've tried all presets within the REVERSE TELECINE POP UP options. Nothing seems to bring the 29.97 footage to actual 24 progressive frames. I saw a posting on Ken Stones website that said Cinema Tools CAN'T actually do it. WHAT? Am I missing something here? What good is it (Cinema Tools) if it can't do the job correctly.
    Any ideas or approaches

I've been trying to get Cinema Tools to remove 2:3:3:2 telecine from 1080i/24pA footage. I haven't tried with DV footage. Its supposed to recognize DV 24pA footage and automatically remove the pulldown, but it doesn't recognize 1080i.
I tried exhaustively to get CT to correctly remove 2:3:3:2 pulldown from 1080i footage, using manual settings, and each time it screwed up the cadence and left interlaced frames. It seems to be a lot smarter about 3:2 pulldown than 24pA 2:3:3:2 pulldown.
    But I may have found a work-around.
If you bring the footage into Final Cut, and then tell final cut to have Cinema Tools reverse the telecine, it appears that some magic happens. I've tried it several times and it seems to effectively remove 2:3:3:2 pulldown, although maybe I was just lucky.
What I think is happening is that Final Cut is recognizing the pulldown cadence and telling Cinema Tools how to remove the pulldown. CT runs blindly and when it finishes the footage in FCP appears to be properly reversed. I guess the "smarts" are in Final cut and the "how to" is in Cinema Tools.
One word of warning though: If you try this, CT will overwrite the original file. And it doesn't ask if you want to do that or provide any warnings. So if it gets it wrong there is no 2nd chance. So make sure that you copy your original file and work on the copy rather than the original.
    Good luck!

  • Reverse telecine of filmtotape transfer?

So I've got 2 35mm films from the 80's that were transferred to HD (29.97) and then downconverted to DigiBeta and then captured to 8 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 and put on a drive for me. I'd like to remove the pulldown so that I can up the bitrate for maximum quality and maximum compatability. The cinema tools manual is unclear on how to figure out the cadence without a "window." Do I just keep trying different options in the reverse telecine path in cinematools until I get a clean output at 23.9 whatever it's supposed to be or is there some trick to this?

So I just kept trying different options til I got one that exported a clean 23.9 whatever quicktime. I took a section from the beginning for a couple of minutes so it included a section with a lot of horizontal motion. If anyone's interested, the settings were F1-F2, Conform to 23.98, Standard upper/lower, Fields DD, Style 1. Don't have a clue what Fields DD and Style 1 mean but I assume it has to do with the cadence of the 3:2 pulldown. Once I had a clean test section, I exported the whole film. It'll be interesting to see if the other film works with the same settings.
