Tried software upgrade now nothing works

I bought a new 12" G4 powerbook a couple of weeks ago and yesterday i let the automatic software upgrade do its thing...
it downloaded quite a few of the updates but then the updater crashed with the options to report, reopen or cancel. I tried all three at some point during the day but the report and cancel were the only ones to work.
Then i noticed that ALL applications I tried to open (other than msn messenger which works fine) also crashed with the same message to reopen, report etc.
I dont know the workings of a mac inside out to be able to work out whats happening. I looked at various logs and all they said was that this application or that application crashed.
I looked for a restore to previous set up type option (like...dare i say.... windows has) but couldnt find anything like that either.
(im currently on my old powerbook with half the keyboard missing and a screen that wont stay up)
Does anyone have any idea what happened? Will i have to reinstall everything to its original basic set up or what?

The first thing I'd do is get a Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue. At least that will make an effort to recover your data, without writing anything to disk. Once that is done, an Archive and Install may be an option as scb suggests, though there are some gray screen troubleshooting steps suggested in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
The reason I suggest doing the Data Rescue first, is there is no way of knowing how severe the corruption is on the drive, and any writing to a drive in a temperamental state may overwrite already poorly allocated data. Data Rescue usually can see through that mess and grab out all the important data you may want to backup.

  • Updated Software and now nothing works

I just recently done a software update to my Macbook Pro and when it had finished and I went to use the likes of Mozilla or Safari, they wouldnt work. Tried to use the system update again, it wouldn't work. So basically nothing will open at all. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I could do so it will work?

Did you restart your Mac after the installs, and repair permissions?
    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

    Hi, can anyone help me?
I was syncing my ipod Touch 3rd generation to my pc (windows 7 OS) and then both itunes (from 10.5.3 to 10.6) and the device (from IOS 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.1) went on to their own automatic software update (itunes from 10.5.3 to 10.6 and the device from IOS 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.1).
Before finishing the update a message appeared saying that my ipod could not be updated. And now it's not working anymore, all it does is show on the screen the iTunes logo and a cable pointing to the logo (obviously saying for me to try to sync).
I've tried everything that I can think of to fix this... restarting pc, the "so called" reseting of the ipod, changing the usb plug and using another cable. I've even tryed to install the old version of itunes. But nothing happens the pc and itunes won't recognize the device.
It was working fine before this, I use the device everyday.
    Can anyone please help?

Firstly delete the .ipsw file on the computer
    usually @ C:\Documents and Settings\MY_USER\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    then do a forced restore
Make sure iphone is turned off and disconnected from your computer, hold down on the home key for 5 seconds and then insert the USB cable while still holding the home key, let go of the home button when you see the apple sign. you will probably get a message saying itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. then restore to factory settings.
Hopefully this will fix it for you, let me know if it dont

  • Upgraded and now nothing works. No desktop icons at all!! Totally ruined. What do I do now?

just upgraded to Yosemite and now nothing works and no desktop icons or dock!! Help what has happened? I've an iMac early 2008 and 56 gig free and 2 gig ram. This was supposed to be enough. Now lost everything. Can anyone help?

There may be a problem with UI files inside system directories, so your files are not 100% lost. You need to check it.
Do you have a recovery flash drive for OS X, bootable OS X flash drive? If so, you can boot iMac from that drive and just fix the system on your computer.
If you don't have, you should create it (at least for safety in similar situations) with another mac or pc.
Off topic: It happened to me too when I tried to replace some textures in Yosemite with textures from Mountain Lion and the process went wrong. So don't be sure that the whole system is ruined, it may just be the graphical part that crashed, but your documents are ok.

I'm on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 and all of a sudden one day my iTunes failed to launch. The problem has persisted for months now--I've tried reinstalling, updating all software, removing all music files (which I backed up), I tried Safe Launching it--NOTHING WORKS. Help!! I'm Desperate!
I was existing with my iPhone which is my main music player anyway--and I lost it in a cab yesterday! I need to sync everything (thanks to iCloud most of it is taken care of contacts and calendar wise) and I'm sort of losing hope that this issue can be resolved with the iTunes...
    Anyone ever experience this?
Any help is so greatly appreciated!

Are you 100% sure that the HDD is totally damaged and there is absolutely no way to recover DATA at all???
Actually the drive might be working fine and there could be a Mac hardware, boot sector malware or cable issue at fault, that can't be determined until the drive is removed from the Mac and a SATA to USB adapter cable used to another Mac, PC or Linux machine.
Even if the file structure is defective there is Data Rescue type software that can read the 1's and 0's of unencrypted data directly off the drive.
If your data is really valuable and worth more than a few thousand dollars, there is Drive Savers which will physically dissect the drive and read the platters directly if the above method fails.
Is it possible.. if I take out the HDD and connect it to some other PC as standby and copy data.. may be its booting section got damaged and it cant boot but it may detect and allow me to copy my data when standby?
Yes it is possible, a piece of software called MacDrive can be installed on the Windows PC and used to read the HFS+ format of the Mac boot drive.
Linux also will read HFS+ format and also fix a lot of problems with drives to get them working.
I suggest you take your Mac to a Linux level geek first to do a hardware evaluation of the drive, a passive image of the drive if it's working so you can later use Data Rescue (no encryption/Filevault) yourself as it takes hours.
If the drive isn't working physically, then consider Drive Savers if you want to part with a few thousand and the drive is not encrypted/Filevaulted.
Forget Apple and many of their type repair shops, they usually don't/won't/can't take the time and just replace your drive and tell you tough luck you should have backed up.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

I should add that this has never been Jailbroken. I keep reading that a lot of times this is the case for a jail broken phone.
I have also gone through the not very helpfull steps on apples site to fix this.. It is not a security issue since i dont have an antivirus or any 3rd party software for my computer.

I hear they are working on one a the minute, I hate ios7

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Reinstalled Windows 7, now nothing works... help

My father-in-law was having some trouble with his pc, so he decided to reinstall his OS. Now nothing works; we have bare-bones OS with no connectivity to anything. I believe he may have completely reformatted his hard drive, possibly deleting some system files? We can't even connect to the internet, looks like the network adapter no longer has a driver installed.
I know my way around a pc, but I confess to being a little out of my depth. Any advice would be appreciated

    Hi:
No doubt the PC is missing several key drivers for the hardware.
The devices needing drivers will be listed in the device manager under an Other Devices category and they will all have little ! marks next to them.
One of them is probably the ethernet controller.
You need this driver for that so you can connect to the internet by wire.

Most of them will be under the Original Drivers category.
