Tried to install widgets, no sign of users/library/widgets folder

Hi there everyone, I hope someone can answer my question.
After about 2 years of having this eMac, I have finally decided to install widgets. So I downloaded a couple and the folders have appeared on my desktop with a file ending in .wdgt. When I open these, inside the folders are images and .css files.
I checked on some sites saying that the widget installs itself in users/library/widgets. However, when I looked in my users/library section, there is no widget folder to be seen.
Do I need to create one? Are they located anywhere else?
Thanks!

Actually, you can run Dashboard widgets on Panther using the shareware utility Amnesty. Not all widgets run (some widgets use Tiger technologies) but many do.

  • Can't install fonts in user/library/fonts folder

I have a problem which has a number of different symptoms (I presume they are related as they all started at the same time):
I can't install any fonts into my user/library/fonts folder. Or, rather, I can install them but they vanish about five seconds later
I have three files on my desktop. Every 60 seconds (precisely) they vanish for about a second and then reappear
Seemingly randomly, but always when I empty the trash, I get a message saying "The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?"
The error message I get in (3) above always disappears when the desktop files blink as in (2) above.
These problems only started in the last 24 hours. Yesterday I installed an update which took me to Mail 6.6. I also installed a Microsoft update to Word. I also installed an update for TechTool Pro taking me from v6 to v7.
    Solutions I have tried:
I have checked SMART status (no problems)
I have verified volume structures (no problems)
I have reset boot and kernel caches
    I have deleted font caches
I have reset home directory permissions and ACLs
I'm running a MacBookPro with Mountain Lion 10.8.5
I am stuck, puzzled, frustrated but hopeful that someone in this community can help me out.
If you can, I would be so very very grateful.

Also when I called Wacom support they actually had me create a new user account to install the software. It's odd that I can install the fonts in the applications folder in one user account but they do not show up in the administrator account.
As I stated, if that new account was an admin one, the fonts should be available to all users. Alternatively, they might be user specific, but you'll have to ask Wacom about that.

  • User/library/mirror folder

can anyone tell me what this folder is for (user/library/mirror)? i have a 17" G4 powerbook and dual 2.7 GHz G5 desktop. my powerbook hard drive was full so i backed up the entire drive and did a complete hard drive wipe then reinstalled only the applications and files i needed but found that there was still about 30 GB of "stuff" in this folder hence my drive was still pretty full. i then removed all of my documents that i could get by without (about 10 GB). then one day i noticed that the mirror folder was empty and i have plenty of storage space again.
now my G5 hard drive is maxed out (400 GB) and there is 300 GB of "stuff" the the mirror folder just like my powerbook. i have called apple support and the tech i spoke to could not tell me what that folder is. i then went to the genius bar at an apple store and again no luck.
it seems this folder is some sort of back up or copy of the entire hard drive. it is empty on my power book and it works great. can this folder be purged from time to time?
    thanks for the help,

Do you access your iDisk contents on a regular basis?
Do you have have an always on internet connection?
If so and your internet access is reliable, there is no reason to keep a copy of your iDisk locally on the hard drive.
Unless you have a reason for doing so, I would turn off iDisk Syncing.
I'm not sure why the Mirror folder is becoming so large over short period of time but I would turn off iDisk Syncing as a test to see if it resolves the Mirror folder growing in size over time.

  • I deleted preference file and now cant find any mail in user/library/mail/ folder!

I actually overwrote the preference file with an older one, because mail was having major issues sending and receiving and other password related wierdness...it actually made my host block my ip when I tried to reset the mail settings and test...meaning I wasnt able to see my website anymore...my administrater for the hosting reset it now...but its kinda freaking me out!
anyways the major issue now is the fact that after I overwrote the mail preference file and reopened mail everything was different...somewhat what I expected since I changed the preferences...but I was confident that I could easily go to the mail folder in library and retrieve all inbox, sent, draft, and trashed folders of messages...nothing was there!!!
    Has anyone experenced this?
I didnt look in the mail folder before changing the preferences, so I dont know if they were their at all...ever?
but the interface was showing all files, sent and recieved deleted etc...is it possible that it was only setup somehow on a server, like using imap or a cloud?
I recently got this computer (sry I should have mentioned: Macbook, snow leopard 10.6.8, using mail 4.6 i think)
SO maybe the dude I bought it from somehow had it set to use a server based repository for mail?? is there a way to know...
I fiddled with computers a fair bit and feel pretty confident with OS related issues, but this is way out of my league!
    anyone?
    all ideas appreciated!
    Thanks

All in all there are about 20 folders and they are all empty.

Some versions of Photoshop have been known to create such things. Don't remember under what conditions, I think I saw someone say their strange folders appeared when using Photoshop with a either an Epson scanner or printer. At any rate you can toss them without doing any harm.

  • Installing update 3.5.3 - iPhoto Library Manager

I have been reading posts detailing all of the problems associated with upgrading to Snow Leopard and checking to see that I have everything in place in case I run into trouble.
I am trying to install the latest version of iPhoto Library Manager.
I first tried installing directly from the software update; this failed and produced this message: +The update is improperly signed.+
As instructed in the update notice, I then clicked on the website given and tried to manually download and install the updated version.
The download shows in the downloads folder in the dock along with the information that it is in users/name/pictures/iPhoto Library but I don't see it there.
How do I get and install the latest version of iPLM?

For specific help with iPhoto Library Manager it's best to consult the makers of the application.
The download shows in the downloads folder in the dock along with the information that it is in users/name/pictures/iPhoto Library
There is no way that any download should go into the iPhoto Package File. Check your settigs on whatever app you used to download.

  • User Library "Caches" missing/invisible?

This is a problem that seems to have happened since I installed SL.
I am scanning my CD booklets into my Macbook Pro, basically so I can read them more easily using the zoom facility. Using an app called CdPedia, they were stored as follows:
    file:///Users/meng/Library/Caches/Metadata/CDpedia/eli-b-f.jpg
However, the Caches folder containing all my jpg's has vanished (although the Main Library Caches folder is still there). No problem, I thought, I'll just restore from Time Capsule.
But no - I go into TC (backups back to March 2009) and there's no User Caches in there either, no matter which backup I look at. (As a separate issue, spotlight doesn't seem to work in TC either so I am unable to search for any jpg's.)
So can anyone speculate as to whether I've lost all my pics, or are they still there somewhere but hidden from me? And why doesn't Spotlight work in TC?
I'd appreciate any thoughts or speculation. Thanks.

Time Machine excludes most caches. It backs-up the <user>/Library/Caches folder to preserve the structure, but excludes the contents.

  • Can''t see inbox.mbox file in user library

For some reason, I can't see a .mbox file for my inbox when I look in my user library Mail folder. I can see a junk.mbox; I can see a deleted messages.mbox, but no inbox.mbox (or sent.mbox, for that matter). Can someone tell me where those messages live in the library? They must be somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. I am about to migrate to a new Mac Pro, and want to make sure everything gets to the new machine. I am currently using my laptop as my main machine, because my aging dual-867 mhz. MDD machine is nursing a dying hard drive, and nothing has been able to repair it, so I stopped using it. Of course, I still have a lot of mail on the old machine, and I wanted to archive the inbox contents to a .mbox file that I could import to the new computer. Are these mailboxes different from other mail folders? Thanks for any help.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Can't access user/library/Mail backup on Time Machine

I just reformatted my HD in the Mavericks fashion. When asked, I did NOT opt to start a new Time Machine backup series for fear of overwriting my mailboxes and contents from yesterday. So now my Time Machine menu item is greyed out and, since "Library" is an invisible file on the Time Machine disc, I can't get at my mailboxes to drag them over manually. The Library folder simply isn't available. So how do I restore my mailboxes to the new OS? I can access the User/Library/Mail folder by using keystrokes (Go to ~/CH/Library), but it does no good because it's *Today's* folder and there's nothing in it. How do I get at the actual backups from YESTERDAY'S User/Library/Mail folder?

Old Toad: You're on the right track, but it looks to be more complicated than even I thought. But thanks for referring me to that set of solutions. I think it worked, in that my latest good backup is now associated with my current OS. The brick wall I'm hitting again is that all I want to back up from the TM drive is my user/library folder, containing  mailboxes. I can't even see it normally without holding down Option while hitting the Go menu item, so locating it for the purposes of Time Machine is tricky, if it's possible at all. One problem queering the do is that there are traces of malware on the backups, and I want to avoid re-installing them with my data. They were the reason I reformatted in the first place. Thanks for sending me to a promising source of info; I've still got Applecare, so I'll call them tomorrow AM.

    Hi,
Please try out the following workarounds and see if it helps:
    1. Renaming SLCache and SLStore folders
    Please go to following location:
    WIN:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe
    MAC: System Library/Application Support/Adobe
and rename the SLCache folder present there.
Similarly, rename SLStore folder present at following location
    WIN: C:\ProgramData\Adobe
    MAC: System Library/Application Support/Adobe
After renaming these folders, try to login into the sign-in screen again.
In case it does not help, try out this:
    2. Switch the User account to Hidden Administrator. Try signing in from there.
Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on your WIN machine. To enable the same, please refer to link.
Sign Out of current user account and then log in with the new account created.
Try launching Photoshop Elements Editor and login into the sign in screen that pops up.
If editor launches up fine, you can disable the Hidden Administrator account created in first step. Steps to disable the account have been mentioned in the same link.
    Thanks,

  • So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.
