Tried to save space old libraries and Trashing

Hi everyone. I have the latest vers. of Itunes and just got a Tera byte I thought it'd be better to save space and put all my "itunes" folders on my Tera. I realized that was wrong and now I have a folder with all types of old Itunes libraries some from years ago and Itunes folders. Does anyone know the layout of what it should be clean? i.e. hardrive/music/itunes/itunesmusic ? I want to trash what I don't need. Also when I download an album I tend to trash the album thinkink it would be ok because I've already imported it into itunes. well now Itunes can't find alot of my songs. Do I really need to keep a copy of every cd I have on my drive for itunes? and if so where should they be kept? last one I promise..... can I combine all these old libraries I have?

Thanks Donald!
Bit ? Remins. My workflow is; Import fr.o.m. Camera to iphoto. Delete bad photos. I nerver Edit in iphoto. Move the best by drag and drop to Aperture in the dock, and do all editing there. Then printing (Epson 2880). Intill now Only jpeg.
But now i want to insreas quality and start working raw. So import raw and jpeg to iphoto. Drag end drop good raws to Aperture. Are the originals in Aperture libraries then,so i can delete it in iphoto libraries, or beter keep it there Also?
What to chose in iphoto preferences; use raw for extern editing? Keep Edith pictures in 16 bit tiff???
And another question. Wien in jpeg, is shoot With My 16 mp camera. Filés are according to iphoto info Around 5mp.
When i export to desktop as "jpeg original size" filés are much Bigger,Around 15 mp.does that mean that the original filé in iphoto is that big and that the fileinfo in iphoto Only showa à preview or à trumbnail??
Apologien My spelling, but My iPad has à verk strong Will, and prefere to "do it My Way".
Kind reglars

• Permissions issue: An error occurred while trying to save your photo librar

I recently upgraded from a Mac mini running OS X 10.4.10 (iPhoto 08) to an iMac Core2Duo (2.4ghz) running Leopard (and also iPhoto 08).
My iPhoto library resided on an external Firewire drive when running on the Mac mini, but now that the iMac has such a large hard disk (750gb), I wanted to move my library there. I copied the library over to the Pictures folder in my user folder on the iMac and started up iPhoto, and everything seemed fine.
When iPhoto is running for any length of time, I get the following error:
*An error occurred while trying to save your photo library.*
*Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library.*
(I have over 300gb available on the disk and my library folder is approximately 40gb.)
I've repaired the permissions on the library using iPhoto's built-in mechanism (command-option while booting iPhoto) and Disk Utility. Additionally, I've used BatchMod to give my user and group full read/write/delete permissions (as posted elsewhere in the forums), but I still get the error.
Searching the forums yields other users w/ the same issues. What's the scoop? TIA!

Sean:
I just had the very same problem when I was messing with permissions and reset my unknown group to staff. I lost all write permissions in my nome folder. Here's how you can reset it for your pictures folder:
In the Terminal type in "sudo chmod -R -N " (there's a space after the N) and drag the Pictures folder into the Terminal window. Then hit the enter key. It should chug along for a couple of seconds and return a new prompt. Give iPhoto another try after that.
I had to do that for my entire home folder and it fixed the problem.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• HELP! I'm trying to clear space on computer and it's not working.

Hi,
My computer is saying that I have very low disk space. I am trying to remove videos/photos/duplicates and the space is actually decreasing. I'm putting most of the stuff on a hard drive and deleting things from the trash. I'm also trying to delete movie clips (as opposed to projects) from imovie and I have no idea how to do it.
Is there any sort of system or something I can use to free more space??? And why is the space decreasing when I delete items from trash?
Thanks!
D

Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box. Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is *free*!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  I store all 5000+ of my music & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine, to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidentally threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue. You can do this with a *FREE* utility called http://monolingual.sourceforge.netMonolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly. However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*.  Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $.99 - FreeSpace shows you how much space is available on all local, connected, and network drives with a single click.
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

• Trying to save a new document and then "The file "lyrics project.pages-tef" couldn't be opened."

As the title says...  Open Pages, Create new document, click Save, the dialog box comes up, I give it a name and select the Desktop as the destination, click OK, the dialog box disappears for about a second and then I get the above message.
No way to save the doc.  I even copied the text, opened another new document, Renamed it and tried to save and same results.  It's a very simple document saved in Pages format, without involving iCloud so it should be as easy as it gets.  On top of that, I just want to Save.  Why is it trying to Open something???
I ended up having to copy the text into an email and sending it to myself in order to copy it into a SimpleText file.
Any ideas on what might have been going wrong?
MacBook Pro 13, OSX 10.8.2, current version of Pages.
Thanks much.
Bo

That is the iCloud version of the document as I understand it. There is a version saved on the Net for iCloud to be shared and a local version on your hard drive. One of those is currently inaccessible.

• Trying to deactivate on old G4 and transfer CS2 to new MacPro (intel)

I have been using Photoshop CS2 on my old G4 and slowly migrating (a year now, lol) over to my new (relatively) MacPro 2.99 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon running V 10.4.11.
My old G4 is now crapping out and getting hung up all the time, so I need to use Photoshop and Illustrator (CS2 also) on my new compter.
The problem is; both are on my network and if both are turned on I can use all the apps on my new computer, but if I turn the G4 off I get the message "Looking up G4 computer".
At this point, the photoshop splash screen just sits there, because it's not finding the old G4.
Why does it need the G4 to run??
I'm getting the same thing in Illustrator. Illustrator actually gets farther than Photoshop. I can get to the interface before it starts looking for my old G4....
HELP!!!!
I have a flier that's due on Monday at 2:30!
I called Adobe and they said that they no longer support CS2 problems!
You need to be rich to keep up with the Jones's!
These are legal copies that I upgraded to CS2 online. Now I don't know how to reinstall if that's necessary.
The only discs I have are Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 9.

Thanks
That makes more sense than anything else. Although it remains a bit of a puzzle why both Adobe apps run on my Intel Mac even though I'm running leopard (assuming 10.4.11 is Leopard, I have trouble keeping track of the number and corresponding animal, lol) so long as I have my old mac running on my network. It appears to be referencing something to make it run....
It also begs the questions
1. I didn't make a backup version of the CS2 upgrades, but I am still able to use my old mac and burn DVDs (for now). I can hear the hardrive re-reading, usually a sign of a hard drive on it's way out. Which files do I need to backup? And if I do back them up. What am I re-installing on the new Mac?
2. Since CS2 appears to be installed on the new Mac, is it a matter of upgrading to CS4 just on the new Mac? Will it then run natively?
Sorry for all the questions. I use the creative suite extensively, but am not loaded enough to be able to drop the cash required for a new install right now.

• Versions and Masters, size and trying to save space

I am looking at my Library and trying to get rid of duplicates - In a List view I see an image and then its Version2. The image master is 9.58 mb; the version is also. I thought versions were supposed to be just the tweaks of the masters and not themselves all that large? I'd like to delete the original and keep the version but know I can't do thatt; if you delete a Master it deletes a version so you can't convert the Version into a new Master
BUT - would this work - export the Versions - delete the Masters - reimport the Versions which then become Masters?
Of course the other option is to offload them all anyway but before going that route, I'm trying to come up with another idea. Or a better idea.

What William said +
You can turn off auto preview generation for new projects, you can turn off "maintain previews" for existing or old projects, you can delete all of the previews and then just generate them for your rated images.
You can also take a some of your images either by project or by any other criteria and then use move masters to an external drive.

• After I zip a file, should I or can I delete the original files since I'm trying to save space, or do I have to keep the original one?

I'm trying to free some space up on my computer and was going to start compressing as many files as I can.  I noticed that when I compress one, I see the new zipped file and then still the original files.  So, should I delete the original files after I get the zip file?
Thanks!

Yes, you can delete the original files.
But if you're running short of space, consider getting a larger HD for your Mac.

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

• Trying to save space...

I assume that once I import my iphoto library to Aperture, I can move the iphoto library to the trash? I think I have multiple copies of images in various places on my hard drive...

When it comes to your photo library do you really want to assume anything?
To make sure that the images are really in the Aperture library before deleting the iPhoto library you should do a search in the Aperture library looking for referenced or missing masters. If they come up empty then your images were imported into Aperture and you can delete the iPhoto library.

• Looking for a way to save space on iphone and maintain music in itunes

Okay here is the problem, I own a macbook pro and a iphone 16gb and I have been using itunes to manage my music for a very long time and my library has grown into thousands of songs.
Now, Is there a way to convert my music down to fit more on my iphone yet maintain my high bit-rate that I used to rip my CD's.
I was thinking of converting all my music and having two of all my songs, high bit-rate(for playing on my stereo system) & and converted bit-rate(for my iphone) but I do not want genius to mess up and a crazily duplicated library.
Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

ALL of your problems are caused by not allowing your router to broadcast its SSID.
Just turn that on and it will work just fine.
Not broadcasting your SSID provides no real security. Guys who can hack your wifi will find your SSID via AirSnort in about 3 seconds flat.
Broadcasting an SSID has NOTHING to do with turning off security.
You already have wpa2 turned on. Leave it on, and simply tell the router to broadcast its SSID, enter the passphrase once more, and you will be a happy camper.
