Tried to sync phone to itunes & i think i lost everything on my phone

i had been using my ipod for my itunes. i finally wanted to convert and use my iphone for my music. i connect to the computer and itunes asked if i wanted to set my phone up as a new phone or use my ipod. i picked ipod figuring then my songs would transfer to my phone. then my phone restarted and it appears my phone is now brand new and all the settings are gone. my phone is making me set everything up, i.e. language, country.
does this mean everything is gone and my phone cannot be restored to how it was a few minutes ago with all of my settings/texts/contacts etc?

The prompt you mentioned is provided the first time an iPhone is connected to iTunes. This is designed to be done right away with a new iPhone. Had you selected as a new iPhone and not choosing to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch, no data on your iPhone would have been touched. You could have then selected to transfer music in your iTunes library to the iPhone.
Since you chose to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch, the data that was on the iPhone is gone unless you have an iCloud backup available for your iPhone.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

Can you clarify your problem? Are you having trouble restoring your new iPhone from a previous phone's backup? Or are you having trouble logging into iMessage?

How is your iPod configured to sync content from your iTunes library? Any error messages during the sync process?
You may want to reset warnings on the device by right->clicking on it under Devices and choosing Reset Warnings. Then resync the iPod to see if any alerts appear.
Is this the same computer you normally sync the Nano with?

Hey guys, I found a solution. I had the same problem, the sync will say "Determining apps to sync" in step 4 - 7 then suddenly just quits. So I did some research, apparently a lot of people have this problem, but everyone were just trying on their own PC, so I decided to try on my other laptop. My iPod synced perfectly with the other laptop so I knew it was the PC that was the problem, not my iPod. So basically it's just iTunes. I followed these steps to completely remove and reinstall iTunes on my PC and Viola! It syncs perfectly again!

Note: Before I did this, BeBuoi said to remove all the apps and resync, but that didn't work for me. So when I did all these steps, I had no apps in my iPod.

To be honest I'd be very tempted to ring Applecare and explain that prior to downloading iOS5 your iPod Touch worked perfectly however since downloading Apple's new iOS5 it's "bricked" therefore can they as a matter of decency try to help put things right warranty situation notwithstanding. Afterall it does appear to be one of Apple's products that has broken your previously working iPod Touch.

As a rule syncing is one way, from the library to the device. There should have been a warning that media content on the device would be removed and replaced with that in the local library. If the content were still on the device it could be recovered with the steps in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. You can redownload your qualifying past purchases from the iTunes Store, Amazon store, etc. Do you have the previous computer your device synced with, or a backup, from which the library could be recovered?

You might wish to sync everything in the future. It makes it a snap to recover when necessary.
