Tried to Update iPad3 to 6.1.3 - Now in Recovery Mode
I tried doing the IOS 6.1.3 update to my iPad3 today over wifi. It seemed to go ok but I was eventually left with a screen showing the iTunes logo and a USB cable. When I plug it into my computer I get a message saying: "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes."
If I do the restore do I lose everything? All of my thousands of photos? This is insane! Please tell me there is another solution!
Not trying to be condescending, just honest. Weren't you the one that said "this is insane"? Having content on an electronic device that is that important and not having a backup, sorry, but that's just not right.
There are third party recovery apps. Look at one called Dr.Fone. That might help you out.

Help, I tried to do the new 8.1 update and it says I'm now in recovery mode.
Ever since I did the latest update the 8.02 or whatever every app keeps freezing so I decided to do the 8.1 today. I tried that and it put my phone into recovery mode. I said to plug into Itunes, I did and it's saying that I should do a factory restore. I don't want to lose all my media:( . I always back up my photos and was about to do this with this weekends photos but my apps were freezing again.....Any way around this so I don't lose my photos?????Help
Do you not have an iCloud or iTunes backup of your device?
You should always update any device (phone, computer, etc...) before updating.
It is never a good idea to keep the only copy of your photos/videos on your mobile device.
You should be transferring them to your computer then backing them up.

My ipod touch 5th generation went into recovery mode when I tried to update ios. When I try to recover it just keeps looping back to recovery mode. I tried to hold the power button for 3 secs. then simultaneously hold the home button for 10 secs. then hold only power button for 20 secs. I tried this several times to no avail. This is my daughter's ipod. I am computer illiterate and I'm not sure what else to try.

Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)

Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.
Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

IPod Touch will not update to 2.1 and is now in recovery mode
So I downloaded the 2.1 update and tried to install, it failed and now my iPod Touch is in recovery mode. When I go to restore now it tries and fails and tells me that it could not be restored and says "An unknown error occurred(6)" I would really appreciate any help as my iPod is useless right now. This iPod has never been jailbroken either.
Dang! I got the same message too, and this is my second iPod Touch (which is a replacement because my first couldn't install 2.0 at all). I got "Unknown Error (6)" twice, then tried a third time and that finally worked.
What is it with these devices that they're so unreliable? As it is, I'm crossing my finger that the 2.0.1 update addresses the battery problem I'm having now with this second iPT. (Won't know yet until later.) -

I updated to the latest IOS about a week ago and my phone became very buggy. I would have music playing and if i hit the next song the music app would close and almost all other apps would crash when trying to go to different windows. So i tried restore because it says "if you are experiencing problems with your iphone, you can restore its original settings by clicking restore" so thats exactly what i wanted. Now every time I try to restore i get an error 21. I have googled this and havent seen any solutions. Right after it extracts the software to restore the iphones screen goes from the "connect to itunes" screen to a quick flash then the apple logo. Please help its my only phone.
Also this thing has been taken care of perfectly. No water damage, in an otter box. Not a single scratch on it.I should add that this has never been Jailbroken. I keep reading that a lot of times this is the case for a jail broken phone.
I have also gone through the not very helpfull steps on apples site to fix this.. It is not a security issue since i dont have an antivirus or any 3rd party software for my computer. -
Updated to ios6 Last night phone now in recovery mode HELP!
Okay last night before i did this i had a bad feeling that i should backup.. .But the software update never said that i needed to so i assumed it was safe? but ofcoarse no its not! Tried to update, now in Recovery Mode?
this morning I tried to update my iPod Touch 4th generation to whatever the newest software is available (I didn't check...). It said I should back up my data before updating, which I did. The update didn't work, and my iPod is now in recovery mode. And only the first purchases I made (which were back in December) are in my 'purchased' list. The rest of them don't show up. Only 14 songs are showing up. I'm not positive how many songs I bought, but I know for a fact it was more than 14, as well as 2 videos. The only way I can get out of recovery mode is to restore, and, as you can possibly imagine, I don't want to because I'll lose all of my songs and videos! Is there any way I could recover my songs and videos before restoring, or am I out of luck? Also, will I be able to get my apps back? If I do, would they still have my information, or would that be deleted as well?
This happened to me. First my iPod got stuck in recovery mode, but now it broke. It won't turn on and it isn't getting detected in iTunes. I have to bring it too an Apple store in a few days and see what they will do. I hope yours doesn't brake like mine did.

My ipad has gone into recovery mode after an "error occured" whilst trying to update it. Will it come out of recovery on it's own? There is a lot of data I want to save before restoring it to factory settings
FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY. -
my ipod touch 5 wount let me back in after trying to update ios with my computer and now says connect to itunes. it still wount work when i plug it in and click restore for it?
it went through the extracting software stage but then an error message saying that it encountered problems came up and it didn't restore.

You have to connect your iPad to your computer now and restore the iOS software with iTunes. The update went bad. Read about how to do it here.

I've been having this problem for a while (maybe a couple of months) and avoided it until I updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS 6. Now they won't sync! :|
At first it was simply collapsing after the install process. I've tried again tonight and it is saying that it has an E drive error. I've tried to use the instructions on other discussions (using Run, CMD, and mapping the E drive to C) - but, I don't actually have an E drive. My c used to be split into two, including an E drive, but it has since been returned to one single drive. (I'm a teacher, the IT manager at school sorted this - managing one drive is easier for me to keep it working well - until now).
Itunes was reinstalled and set up simply in the C drive, but could there be something remaining from it's previous install? Help?!?

There's a few suggestion other than using SUBST at the command prompt given in the following user tip:

After updating my ipad to ios7 it is on recovery mode. Then I tried to reboot it and it shows an image to connect to iTunes. I tried to connect to iTunes and restore it but it says ipad could not be restored and an error occurred. What can I do now???

I tried to update my phone this morning, and now it is stuck on a black screen with an apple in the middle.
Press the Power button and hold it down until the computer turns off. Restart. Do you still get the same result? If so, then try booting into Safe Mode, then restart normally. A safe mode startup takes considerably longer than a normal one, so don't panic. You will also see a progress bar at the beginning.
