Tried to update now wont wont even come on
Ok so last night I tried to update to OS4 or whatever and now my iphone wont even come on. I think I'm stuck in DFU mode and when I plug it into my computer it says this phone must be restored to be recognized. I restore it and then some error message comes up and the phone will not restore. Then I tried downloading an earlier firmware and the same thing happens. What the heck do i do to get my freaking phone to work?
What happens when you connect it to your computer and try to use iTunes to restore it?

I tried opening it from the application folder and nothing happens. I have tried from the dock and the same thing. Unfortunately this is not the application that I ws intending to work on. This was running perfectly fine for me. I have a lot of music on it. I know all is still there because I can see it through spotify. I started looking for help with Face time with came up with a needing proper credentials in order to open. Now neither open after a 9 an automatic download of nine updates. Try DFU Mode Restore. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power button, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time.

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.

6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

Are you updating over wi-fi, or cellular data? Or through iTunes. If you get the mesaage that the update is not available . Make sure you have the correct date and time on you phone. then try again.

If there is no backup of the device to iCloud or iTunes and the device has gone into recovery mode when trying to update, then the data is gone. If the device was connected to iTunes to do the update originally, it is possible the default backup was done, unless your son disabled it. To check to see if there is a backup, go in iTunes, click on Edit, Preferences, Devices and see if there is a backup listed for the date/time before the update was started. If he was doing the update OTA on the phone, then there is no backup. No backup, no photos.

Connect your iPod to any computer with iTunes installed, highlight your device and try syncing the apps only. If it doesn't work might have to restore through iTunes. With the new iTunes and iCloud beta, you can have the iTunes list what apps are missing on your device but if you had previously purchased in the past and then have iTunes install them. You should always get in the habit of backing up your iPhone whenever you do any firmware/OS updating/upgrading or transferring over to new device. I really really really really hope you can get back at least some of your old info. I will tell you this, I have been kicking myself in the butt for not routinely backing up my iPhone when my beautiful special iPhone 4 came up missing and had to revert back to my 3GS. iPhone 5 will be released in a few months so I am holding off on purchasing a new iPhone til then, not that I did so without reservation and a little bit of iPhone 4 withdraw.

Hi, I tried to update iphone to new update, I updated itunes first but when I tried to update the phone I got unknown error (code was 1604 i think) first had phone in dock so tried again and the third time I went to try with the original cable but Itunes/my computer wont see it. the screen has a picture of the usb cable with arrow pointing to Itunes logo. I have tried the Apple help which included reset (both buttons 10 seconds) using different usb port and others from general help.

Error when updating, now computer wont recognise.
I was updating my iPod touch today, itunes downloaded the update for the ipod and when it went to install it apparently had an error and now it wont do squat. It doesnt show up under "my computer" nor iTunes (using usb cable of course).. i have a newer Dell with Windows 7, current update of itunes as well... I've tried to reset the ipod but to no avail.... it turns on but shows a picture of a usb cable with an arrow pointing up towards the "itunes" icon.... ALSO, this is a little older touch, its the 32gb, pre camera version with the sleep button on the top left... H E L P!

I bought an iPhone 3 from eBay and when my husband tried to update it all that comes up on the screen is the imei and iccid numbers along with the iTunes icon and a USB. I can only use it for emergency calls as that is all that happens when I slide it on. Have I paid $250 for a dud phone or what can I do to fix it. Any help would be appreciated .
Sounds like your iPhone was hacked to unofficially unlock it. You can put it in Recovery mode, connect it to iTunes and Restore it in iTunes. Then you will need to call AppleCare, give them the model and serial numbers and find out which cell provider it is locked to. After you get that information contact that cell provider and see if you can get it officially unlocked.
