Tried to update to mavericks, installation failed.

I tried to update to Mavericks installation failed. I cmnd r, erased disk reinstalled ML online. Macbook will restart in safe mode only. The start up ding is clearly audible and the sound device is recognized in system report. But system settings shows "no output device found". Video is super slow. I have reinstalled ML for the second time with the same results. I cannot access diagnostics with the "d" key at start up and have ran out of options.  My MBP is a 2.66 Ghz intell core 2 duo 4GB and was working great before the attempt to upgrade. Help! thanks.

Linc Davis is a very smart guy on here, and his recommendation in that thread is to reinstall the OS. I'd suggest a backup first.

    Hello there, Goraksanat.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good pointers for troubleshooting your issue:

    Hello,
I tried to install the new Security Update for Mountain Lion (2014-003) and received an error message at the end of the installation process a la:
"The installation failed". The Installation fails because of an error. Please contact your vendor (roughly translated from German).
So I didn't found anything on the web to these issue. I remember a similar problem by the last security update too. So now I'm a little bit concerned regarding a virus or something else on my iMac.

Disable anti virus softwrare if installed
Check firewall options in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options
    Make sure Gatekeeper is enabled
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Make sure either Mac App Store or Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

    Hello Vineet,
I did a complete uninstall (including the CS5 Clean Tool) and reinstalled MC CS5.  I ran the updater and everything seems to have updated properly.  Thanks for your help.  I was holding off on the reinstall because of the time involved with reconfiguring the apps, reinstalling plugins, etc.
Looking at the installer log, there appears to be some permissions related entries that were not present in logs of the failed installs.  Here is the relevant section of the log.

  • (PS3) GT6 update 1.10 installation fails repeatedly

Hi, I have a serious problem with installing update 1.10. The system downloaded and installed the 2GB installation package but when the game started and the installation script wanted to apply the update the installation failed during the process. The only option was to press OK button but the update procedure started over and over again with the same result. I did a complete restore of my PS3 to its defaults and formatted the disk (full format). Even after that I couldn't update GT6. The game can run without any updates installed. Once I check for updates, the system downloads all 9 packages and installs them. Then I start the game and the update proceduce fails the same way like before the PS3 restoration. How could I solve it?

For those who are still struggling with updating problems...pls try to follow steps mentioned below...at least them worked for me !I found these instructions from elsewhere on this site...--------------------------------Hi mate, sorry to hear of your troubles.   Settle in because I'm about to write a novel.   Seems like you covered most of the big things to try.Unusual that a new formatted HDD is still giving you trouble.Sounds like the issue is probably related to the downloads then, possible packet loss, causing issues with the install. Are you using a wired or wireless connection?Obviously wired is better and you should always use that if possible.Wireless is more susceptible to packet loss during downloads than a wired connection. Do you have a copy of your save file? Are you installing copy that before you try the updates? In other words, any chance the save file is corrupted and causing you issues? Digital download or disc copy?Obviously, also make sure the disc is clean and not scratched, and the laser lens is clean. Only a few things come to mind that you may not have tried. One is downloading the patches in stages.Another is downloading via the new v4.60 XMB option.(Never done it, not sure how it works, but doubtful it will make much difference)The last is an in-game function ... switching off the 'Install Game Data' option.(I'm unsure exactly how this function works) At this stage, considering the game isn't functioning at all, you may as well delete all traces from the HDD.New HDD ... so refomat?Option available from the XMB.XMB ... Settings > System Settings > Restore PS3 System.I believe you will need to update PS3 to v4.60 again.Check HDD looks okay regarding System Software Version and Free Space.XMB ... Settings > System Settings > System Information. Otherwise remove all GT6 files from the console manually. For disc copy   XMB ... Game > Game Data Utility > delete GT6 file.                            XMB ... Game > Save Data Utility > delete both save file (GT6 and GT6 Backup)If digital copy   XMB ... Game > Game Data Utility > delete GT6 file.                             XMB ... Game > delete GT6 icon.                             XMB ... Game > Save Data Utility > delete both save file (GT6 and GT6 Backup)Again, just check HDD looks okay regarding System Software Version and Free Space.  So .... once happy everything is removed, load GT6 onto console. If disc version start the game offline. If digital version download the game only.Start the game offline (or cancel option to Update Software) and confirm it's playing correctly.Play far enough to establish a save file.Quit game, and still 'offline' restart the game and again confirm all is good, and at this point you could consider swithing off the 'Install Game Data' option.Start button > Options > Game Data > Install Game Data.Check link for details.http://www.gran-turismo.com/us/gt6/manual/#!/save_load/autosaveYou may need to manually save to hold this setting change. So you now have a functioning game with a valid save file and the 'Install Game Data' function switched off.  Okay, time to try updates. You could consider doing it in stages. Each patch will download and then install.Once installed, the next patch will begin downloading etc etc.It is possible to cancel out of the download once a file has installed. (circle button) So if it says 'Downloading File 1 of 9' allow for the download and install to finish. When it changes and says 'Downloading File 2 of 9' cancel the process. You should now have updated to the next version ... eg v1.01.You should now be able to play the game (by cancelling the option to Update Software) and check everything is okay. So try updating and installing the first patch file.Check the game is playing correctly. If you have the 15th Anniversary content, you could now consider introducing that the the game data.Access from XMB.XMB ... PSN > Account Management > Transaction Management > Download List. If you have a USB copy of your save file, you could also consider reintroducing that.If you do either of these things, check the game is still playing correctly before proceeding with the other updates. While testing game, you could also consider switching on the 'Install Game Data' option from the in-game menu. You may need to manually save, and then quit and restart game for the function to activate. It's unknown to me exactly how this function works.Whether anything will install immediately after you switch it on, whether it's not until you restart, or whether it will install anything at all, I'm not sure. After giving that a go, you could consider switching it back off again, and manually saving.(As I say, I'm unsure how this function works. Whether this is a worthwhile exercise is perhaps questionable, but apart from wasting a bit of time I see nothing wrong with trying it at each step.)  Then try next patch.Download and install "File 2 of 9'.Cancel download once finished.Check game is playing correctly and manually save.Switch on 'Install Game Data'.Initiate data install, then switch off function and manually save. *Special note for v1.02*There is a known issue for updating forwards from v1.02.Check the link for details.http://www.gran-turismo.com/au/news/00_3266694.html  Continue with 'File 3 of 9'.Repeat process as before. Next patch ... etc etc etc.Checking game and installing data (if available) after each patch. Going roughly from memory ...v1.01 and v1.02 were around 1GB and 1.2GB.v1.03 - 1.06 were all quite small.v1.07, v1.08, and v1.09 were again around 1GB or larger. So you might choose to skip through a few patches part way through if you wish.  As I mentioned earlier, v4.60 introduced a new Game Update function to the XMB.By pressing 'Triangle' while on the GT6 (or any) game icon brings up a menu.On this menu is a new 'Check for Update' option. This allows you to check for updates without launching the game. How it works if it finds an available update I'm not sure. (haven't had a chance to test)So I don't know whether there's any advantage trying to patch GT6 via this option. But it's there if you want to try it out as another alternative.  Obviously, with all that said, there is no guarantee it will work. With a new HDD, a regular full update in one go shouldn't be an issue, so there's a problem somewhere.Maybe the step by step approach will help.Again, and most importantly, wired connection if possible. If no luck it's just a case of try and try again. As you mentioned, using a friends internet, particularly with a different ISP and/or better connection, is a good option.  Please let us know how you get on.Also, please let me know if there's a problem/error/mistake with how I've described any of the procedures. And if you could add anything to that step by step approach, or info. on the XMB 'Check for Updates' function it would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck with it.

I'm assuming you are trying to run the installer from apple. What I would suggest is you download the installer manually to your desktop then launch the installer. If try to run the installer over the intertubes you may run into a problem like you did.
Then I would uninstall itunes 8 and any software associated with it like the apple update software, quicktime, apple mobile device support. However uninstalling itunes should remove any additional software it installs. Then clean out your temp folder:
    6. Clean out your temp folders,
    a. C:\windows\temp (if one exists)
    b. C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp
Sometimes installers will pick up old files or won’t delete their temporary files.
Then with a newly download installer on your desktop try launching it. Let me know if that helps.
Here is an apple doc that help.

  • I'm trying to update to Mavericks, but the App Store isn't signing me in.

So I decided that I want to update to Mavericks, and they take me to the App Store on the Macbook Pro. When I put all my info in and clicked the sign in button, it doesn't sign me in. Rather, it's still loading. It has been around 30 minutes already and I'm still waiting to get signed into the App Store. Does anyone know how to fix this or know what may be happening?
    Thanks!

Bummer!  You should have uninstalled on the day before the end of the trial.    The Uninstaller is also subject to the trial period limitations.
If you plan to buy a full license, you don't have to uninstall the trial version at all.
It's exactly the same binary you'd be getting anyway, and it's the same binary for the Extended and Standard version of Photoshop.  It's your serial number ("key") that turns it into either Standard or Extended.
I'll bet that if you attempt to launch your expired trial version, it will prompt you for a valid license number or to buy the license.  So when you have bought the license, just input the serial number there and you're good to go.
If you're absolutely itching to delete the trial version, and provided you have no other CS applications (any version or flavor or CS), then just drag the Photoshop folder to the trash, empty the trash can, and then run the Adobe CS Cleaner Tool, which you must locate on the Adobe site and download.  The Cleaner Tool will (should) get rid of all the other components scattered by the CS6 installer all over your HD.
Hope that helps—at least to put you at ease.
Enjoy your Mac.  Typing "MAC" reveals you are relatively new to the Mac, congratulations!. It's Mac for Macintosh.

  • Gget error message while trying to update to Maverick on macbook pro

while trying to update to OSXMavericks on macbook pro I get an error has occurred message

    You're welcome.
I usually install app updates with iTunes on my computer followed by syncing my iPhone to install the downloaded updates on my iPhone. When syncing your iPhone with iTunes the first time after downloading app updates with your iPhone, the updates are transferred to your iTunes library on your computer. Less of a chance for a potential problem when doing so with iTunes on your computer.

  • OS X Mavericks installations fails after reboot, stuck. Safe mode does not help

Quick Summary: Installation of Mavericks gets stuck after reboot, no safe mode boot, only recovery console works.
    Update:  Currently following procedure http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US
I have upgrade 4 out of my 5 machines, but the most important iMac 27" mid 2010 went through with the installation and then got stuck on a grey screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel for 6 hours.
A few restarts did not help.
Started from recovery a new download and install. But it ended up in the same end.
Trying safe mode/boot, but does not finish
Going back to recovery and try repair disk, does not help
Going to recovery using terminal resetpassword and then setting the permissions for all login accounts back, no good.
Going to recovery and using terminal to check /var/log of the mounted Macintosh HD.log shows at the end "The installation was successfull"
    System.log shows
com.apple.kextd: Failed to send personalities to the kernel.
Error: Couldn't send kext personalities to the IOCatalogue.
    Exited with code: 71
Throttling respawn: Will start in 8 seconds.
Resetting NVRAM/PRAM and reboot, waiting so far stuck but I still hear some disk activity, waiting a little bit longer.
    Any help?

Do you have a Recovery HD from your previous systems?
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Look for another Recovery HD, although you need the OS 10.9 one if it's available. If it's not, then you will need to start over from scratch by erasing the drive then reinstalling 10.9.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mavericks installation fails, unrecoverable

Downloaded Mavericks from the App Store on 10.8.x (current), backup to time machine, then install. After the first phase of the installer completes...
This error comes up that indicates the install failed....
.... even though it looked as if the install should have just completed.
Proceeding as instructed, I try the Startup Disk utility...
    Whats the deal here guys??
P.S., rebooting results in the installer starting over, then failing again, even though it says to click restart to return to my previous system.
Running on 2008 MacBook Aluminum with SSHD and FileVault enabled...

I suspect the fact that you have FileVault enabled might have something do to with the issue.
Did you have Lion/Mountain Lion prior to the update? If yes, hold down Command -R to boot into the recovery drive.
If you have a partition set on an external drive you can install OS X 10.9.0 on the external drive and boot from this new empty partition. I would run a clone backup of your internal drive to another partition if possible. I like SuperDuper to clone. It's free for an "Erase & Install" clone.
    Download SuperDuper! — http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
If the clone fails, can you see your files to move then to the new OS X 10.9.0's partition? After you have saved all your data, then erase the internal drive and clone the new back.

  • I am trying to update to Maverick, and am told I have SMART problems on my disc? What is the next step?

Hi - I am trying to install Maverick, when I get a message window which says I have SMART problems and my disc will soon crash.
Is there a way to proof this info? And continue to install Maverick?
    Thanks!

Your HDD is failing and needs to be replaced. Back up your data immediately, as Kappy stated. Bring your machine into Apple for a HDD replacement, or you can save money via DIY. Best of luck.

  • X6 firmware update to V40 installation - fail loop...

    Hi
My Nokia X6 16GB will not update to V40 through Ovi, Nokia Suite or PC Suite.
    The phone knows the V40 update is availablefor but wont let me update OTA as it wants me to use the PC to update which is where the problem begins;
Ovi suite knows it needs V40 as well and gets as far as doing the backup, it detects a USB connection then gets in an endless loop where it loses then gains the USB connection (you have to press next everytime).
PC Suite doesn't work at all
Nokia Suite - occasionally connects and it can see the update but loses the connection almost immediatley between it and the phone and I have to start again (the phoen itself remains connected to the PC. Nokia Suite also does some strange things to the screen, which ciorrupts 50% of the time but is cured if repaired only to fail again. No joy on that count
I have tried every possible combination of reloading, wiping, deleting the various nokia elements etc etc. Ovi gets me closest and is the most stable of all the suite's but still wont finsih the job
I'm at my wits end. Geniuses please step forward
    Cheers Grayzza
PC is Core 2 Quad, W7 Home Prem 64 SP1, 4GB RAM. All drivers up to date, no viruses.

    Hi Farby
Thanks for this, however despite disabling virus/firewall etc no success.
Nokia SUite is up to date
Software Updater loads but gets stuck on install stage so no success with that either.
So I still can't get past the looping USB lost/USB connected phase when installing V40. However, I was able to update MAPs throught Nokia Suite with no problem. Weird
Any other solutions you can think of?
    Cheers
    Grayzza
