Tried Transferring Photos in Finder, Only To Crash and Lose Files

So here's the story... I wanted to transfer photos from one folder to another on OS X Lion.  All I was doing was moving JPG photo files, not copying.  Then Finder crashed so I had to relaunch.  Okay, that's fine... it happened every blue moon on Snow Leopard.  So I thought I would just have to repeat my efforts after relaunch... Wrong.  I went back to where my photos originally were and they were gone, so I went to the location of where I wanted to move them and the folders were there, but no JPG photo files.  They've completely Vanished... I'm the biggest Apple supporter but this is completely Unstable!  I just lost thousands of photos for a photo shoot I did, in Finder nonetheless.  It wasn't like this was through iPhoto, Aperture, Picasa, or anything like that, just Finder.
Any possible solution to this?  Please and thank you!

Open Windows Explorer once your IPOD is plugged in and in Disk mode. Drag the folder with your pictures in it to the IPOD icon and drop it. That's it. Just remember this is for transferrring photos from one location to another and cannot be viewed using the IPODs interface.

I transferred photos to my computer by cutting and pasting.  I have some on my phone that I didn't cut and paste.  Now they are gone and and I cannot find them anywhere on phone or computer. Are they lost forever.  I have done no back-up recently or icloud.  My daughters 8th grade graduation was on it.  I am devastated.

A lot of I should haves.  I had too many photos and while at work I opened up the 4 folders inside of the DCIM folder on my phone.  I didn't think it would be a big deal to just cut the photos and paste on my computer as I have  done this before.  i moved one folder that had 803 pictures in it and all was fine.  I ran out of time and unplugged phone and went home.  When I got to work this morning I was looking at my phone and realized I only had 34 pictures.  I knew there should have been 400+ there and they are gone.  Don't know what happened and if they were deleted off phone or computer I cannot see them anywhere.  I didn't back up (I know mistake) Lessoned learned I just hope there is something i can do!

  • Problems transferring photos to iPod from Nikon D70 and Finepix S602 Zoom

I've been having some difficulties getting a clean transfer of photos from both the D70 and the S602. (Yes, I know the latter is not on the supported list, but the D70 is.)
The first couple of attempts worked fine (both on S602). Transferred 16 photos (9.8 MB) and 13 photos (15.2MB). One from a CF card and one from SmartMedia.
However, the third time it went wrong and not only did the transfer fail but all previously transferred photos apparently disappeared.
Short panic and one reset later the photos are back, but the third roll a) claims to contain only a subset of the photos and b) isn't browseable. Delete is the only option. Further attempts have the same problem, but manually stopping part way through is more successful, so I was able to deal with it in batches. But this is a real pain.
Same problem arises with the D70. But with a 1GB CF is even more painful to manage.
There seems to be little consistency in how much can be successfully transferred before a problem arises. Sometimes it is breaking after 15 shots and a few MB. Other times I can get more transferred, for example, 101 MB (38 photos) or 61 photos (60MB).
I tried switching the D70 to PTP mode (the S602 doesn't support that) and had more success. Everything was going well until it hit 118 photos (299MB) and then it stopped, with the 119th photo showing up as a question mark. This is repeatable. No need to reset this time, so I wonder if it is the same problem.
All the photos successfully transferred are accessible from the PC, but it would be really nice to get it all working more smoothly. Any suggestions?

This is weird, when I connected the iPod to my computer it opened iTunes, and I had to do all the stuff you do the first time, but this time I checked 'Automatically add photos' or whatever as well. So, then it started to put them on my iPod but I pressed skip because I didn't want like over 770 pictures on my iPod, just the ones I would pick... so then, it updated the songs and everything, that was great but I got my hopes up too soon and figured I'm in, but no, I still get the same message when I try to upload photos... ahh, please help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's still a good chance that the photos are in the library but just not being recognized by iPhoto. Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Lenovo T420s: Finding source of crash and reboot

    Hi,
I have been running Arch on my T420s since I got it in Jan without any problems. However, recently my laptop started to suddenly reboot: Suddenly the monitor goes black, everything shuts down, roughly four seconds of silence and the laptop suddenly boots again.
As I am not very familiar with this type of problem, I do not know where to start looking. However I observed the following:
    - The log files do not contain any valuable information (I grepped /var/log/* for "error" and "warning" but nothing interesting showed up).
    - After rebooting the "recovering inodes" message shows up.
    - No clear pattern is visible: Sometines the crashes occour withing 2 minutes after rebooting, sometimes nothing happens the whole day.
    - No difference in behavior is observable when I change my power supply / bettery.
Has anyone an idea where I could look in my system - or does that behavior indicate a hardware / power issue?

I unfortunately experience the same. On Ubuntu this problem is widely spread and many bug reports are being filed since one of the last updates (for instance, here, here and here), but also noticed on Arch (and claimed to be fixed, see link below, but it doesn't prevent all crashes).
Often diagnosed as having something to do with the nvidia graphics card, but also appearing on other systems (like my own T420s). I just installed Arch over the weekend and had one of those crashed again last night. So it seems an upstream error in the xserver itself; potentially in combination with some other packages. A bug that produces the same behaviour (xserver crash and landing back at the login manager) has been reported in openbox with some gtk3 applications: here. although the patch fixed some specific crashes (in my case) some other crashes persisted.
Concerning the logs: it's a bit weird to me as there is no trace in the log on Arch. On ubuntu, in either the syslog or the Xorg log, you can see a segfault in the xserver. (I'm sure the issue is the same; just unsure why it doesn't appear in the logs)
I really hope somebody could at least find out where the error comes from and to which version we can roll back to avoid it. (I never had this problem on my ubuntu before upgrading to 12.04 and applying several updates)

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • Lightroom 4 is crashing and corrupting files. it also crashes my entire system sometimes. I'm on windows 7 64x, Intel 5 4670, 16gb ram.

I've tried reinstalling it. Didn't help. It crashed when I was exporting 111 photos, then I only did 20 at a time and it didn't crash, but it crashed 4 times while I was editing the session. What should I do?

I tested it, its fine...my whole system is fine. Lightroom is the only
program that acts like this. Otherwise my system is good to go.What else?

  • InDesign file crashing and damaging file...even the backup file.

Of course in times of deadline but I have a lengthy 20 something page document that continually crashes and then gives me a damaged error but attempting to recover just crashes InDesign. I have tried recreating a couple times thinking maybe something corrupt in the doc but even the back up file is corrupt now! UGH! HELP!!!

Hard to tell what you mean by the backup file is corrupt.
It's possible that only the recovery data is bad, and if you empty the (hidden by default) InDesign Recovery folder you will be able to start ID without auto-recovery, then use File > Open... to navigate to and open the last saved version of the file.
If a backup file is also misbehaving it  may be that it already had a problem, or else there is something not specifically file-related that is the problem, a plugin conflict, or a bad font are two common errors. Without more information, though, it's impossible to say. What version of ID? Which OS? Do you have the latest patch installed for your version?
If yo are a Mac user you likely have a crash report associated with this. If so, post it on pastebin.com and give us a link to it here and we might be able to narrow things down.

  • Crash and .ims Files

Since I updated to Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 the project keeps creating a media a "Media Cache Files" folder on my computer's hard drive and filling it with .ims files until my hard drive is full. This happens even though I have told the project to put the media cache files on an external drive. The project also creates a Media Cache Files folder on the external drive and fills that folder with .pek and .cfa files. Anybody know how to prevent the project from creating this folder on my computer's hard drive?

    Hi Jeff,
Pardon the long post, and maybe I should direct this at Kevin, but I pick you. We've been scratching our heads over this for a year.
Trying to get a handle on our cache file set-up. Where best to put them, when to generate, etc. We have multiple rooms working with the same media, maybe picking up a project from another editor. Different configurations but all rooms have robust Mac Pros, PPro 2014, multiple fiber connections, internal hard drives, lots of RAM (48g).
I assume that its better to put cache files on a secondary drive if possible; would you agree?
For a very large file it seems to bog PPro down. I.e. you can't play the clip while its particular cache file is generating. We load entire ballgames, movies, hour long interviews, etc. Is this as expected?
A new user on the same project still seems to have to generate cache files; do you know if these files should be associated with the media, the project, or the user? We do not put the cache files next to the original media; that becomes a nightmare in the finder.
I did a test just now and the .ims files were created for everything I dragged in (ProRes, mxf, avi, mp4, aif, wav, psd, png, tif).
The second part of this test was to clean the database using PPro preferences. Before the clean I had 26,000 ims files in my common folder (tiny, yes, but a lot of files) and 7,000 files in my cache files folder on my internal hard drive (1TB SATA). After the clean I appear to still have exactly the same number of files on each. Just to be clear, the media prefs are pointing to the same cache folder. I can delete manually, and try to do that about every two weeks. The problem there being that I'm working on an hour long show with seven cameras, clips, graphics, music, etc. and I don't want to have to re-generate the big files often. My work around has been to delete all cache files, then launch the project when I'm leaving for the night so they re-generate during down time.
Again, pardon the long winded post. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Finder - Can't drag and drop files onto stacks on the desktop anymore.

    Hi,
This might sound like a strange question but in the past I was able to select a group of files in a window and drag that group to the desktop where they would stack upon one another creating a neat stack of all the files in one place. Now when I do this they drag onto the desktop and remain spread out all over the place. It's not terribly difficult to deal with except if I'm dragging say, 30 photos onto the deskop. Before they appeared stacked upon one another and I could simply drag one off the stack one by one. I am however experincing harsh symptoms of OCD because I can't figure out why. My co-worker's Mac is the same as mine (both running 10.8.2) and his files stack just fine.
I've done a fresh install after having no luck and it's till doing it.
This is really bumming me out. Any suggestions are very welcome. I've even booted into safe mode and it still won't stack drag and dropped files onto the desktop.
    Thanks for any advice,
    -Jason

Relaunch Finder and restart Mac OS X. See if this helps.

  • How can I get Time Machine to only backup new and changed files?

Time machine is backing up more than just new and changed files and is filling up my back up disk too fast.  How can I change it so that it will only back up the new or changed files instead of the whole drive?  I used to have my backups go back months, but now it is backing up only a couple days back, since there is no room left on my back up hard drive.  Each back up is like 400 gigs, instead of just the amount of the changed or new files.
Thanks for any ideas or help!
    kt

Thank you Eric!  I did go look at this info and tried to do a full reset of TM and I am still getting full backups of my HD instead of just new/changed files.  The weird thing is that I have 9 BU's from over the last 2 days and they all seem to be around 415 gigs and my backup HD is only 750 gigs!  I don't get it.  It shows that I have around 75 gigs of free space on that 750 gig drive.  It doesn't make sense.
So I am having the same problems even after doing the full reset of TM. I am using Mavericks 10.9.5 which they don't talk about in this info.
Does anyone have any further ideas on this?  I don't understand how I could possibly have that many full BU's on my HD that is only 750 gigs.
    Thank you,
    kt
