Trim captured media from FCP in quicktime

i was wondering if there is any benefit to trimming media in quicktime that i captured in FCP. When i captured the media i left on handles big enough to build a bike from, and i was looking at cutting down the size of the media files. Is there a way to actually "cut" out the unwanted handles in final cut, or should i do it in Quicktime 7 pro?

Well, here's the issue. FCP is an editing application. You import material, you cut it down into smaller and/or re-arranged sequences and then export it as your final-- whether that is-- back to tape, to dvd, to computer playable file or any other possible medium.
It's simply a matter of not capturing more than you need, if you're concerned that you took in way too much footage. Finish up the project, archive what you have to and delete ALL of it from your drives. And drives are cheap these days, so what the heck, get a couple more. A terrabyte costs about 1000 dollars. That's cheap. Try buying a terrabyte 15 years ago! You would have had to sell your house and your kids.

  • Is it possible to encode FLV from FCP or Quicktime export?

I am using Final Cut Pro 3 and would like to export FLV movies either directly FCP timeline or from Quicktime export.
I have used systems with Adobe CS3 installed and they have a quicktime plug-in for encoding.
However, I've just purchased Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium and I have not gained that functionality.
Going to Adobe support is going to cost me more money (I would have thought that spending over £1700 would give me a little help).
Can anyone tell me how to get export from FCP with what I have?
    Do I have use CS3 or CS4?
Or do I have to export a quicktime movie from FCP then use Adobe Media Encoder to create FLV files?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for your info. I'm already evaluating squeeze, but the trial version doesn't have the plug-in. I would have to pay for it to check it out. As I'm not planning to pay another $600 I suppose I'll have to go with the export from FCP. However, I might just save a reference quicktime movie.

  • Capturing media from DVD

Is it possible to capture video and audio media from DVD, and if so how do I do it? I am fairly new to FCP, I have experience on an AVID symphony but am acclimating myself to FCP. Any help would be appreciated.

Either of the software titles above work well ... or you can simply connect a DVD player to your DV device and set FCP device control to Non-Controllable Device, then use Capture now. Or dub the footage to a digital tape format then capture from the tape.

  • Trimming XML export from FCP

Is it possible to trim the sequence XML export? FCP exports the entire XML sequence even when using Mark In/Out. I just need portions from the sequence to facilitate text extraction from my sequence chapters... if it helps to know why. Thanks.

Duplicate the sequence...trim out what you don't want to export. Then export the XML.

  • Saving from FCP to QuickTime is distorting the video

Hello all - I'm repeatedly trying to save a FCP sequence as a QuickTime file so that I can import into iDVD. Each time I save it and then open the file in either QuickTime or iDVD, the faces in the video appear very thin (as if I had converted to a widescreen format or filter - but I didn't).
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks so much for the help.

OK, here's what's going on. When the anamorphic flag is checked, the image is displayed as 16:9. The actual media is 4:3 and it is distorted horizontally to acheive the "wide screen" look. I don't work in IDVD, so I'm not sure how you make an anamorphic dvd with it. It's pretty simple in DVDSP. As far as the quicktime goes, you can set the dimensions of your export to properly reflect the "widescreen" look, or simply change how quicktime player displays the file. I'm not on my system at the moment, but do a little exploring in quicktime player and you should be able to find it. I don't have the correct pixel dimensions on hand for the quicktime export, but if you're sole purpose is creating a dvd, that's not the way to go.

  • Color changes from FCP to Quicktime to Youtube

I'm editing on FCP7 and I add color correction but then the color changes once I export to quicktime conversion. And then it changes again when I upload it to youtube.
I'm editing on Apple ProRes 422 1920 x 1080. I export with quicktime conversion to h264 same dimensions. Please help me out thanks!

The color will change. This is due to many factors, like the Canvas in FCP not being color accurate, so it won't match a QT file that you export if you do it with the same settings as the sequence. But it REALLY won't match if you compress it in any way, as compression means information is removed to make the file smaller.  Color information.
Here...look at my second to last post on this thread for a reason for all of this:

  • Re-capturing media...

I have recently editied a wedding video with a highlights sequence. I have since exported the project and removed the captured media and render files. I need to now export just the highlights sequence again. What is the most efficient way to recapture ONLY the media I need for that one sequence? BTW I removed the capture media from the finder menu from my hard drive not the delete unused media option from within FCP.

Michael - you are exactly right - the media must be present for MM to remove the unused media.
Everything else I am reading here is a bit inaccurate to say the least. Dragging clips from the sequence to the browser will still create instances of the clips with the same media start and end times as the master clips. Hence this does not remove the unused media from the clips, and never will, no matter what you do. Understanding the difference between the media start & end and in & out is fundamental to understanding Final Cut.
stilltoe - did you test this method on a sequence in which all the clips had already been made offline before you Media Managed? Did you actually look at the media start and end times of the resulting offline master clips? Did you initiate a batch capture and see how much media it was estimating it needed to capture? In my experience, MM uses metadata from the existing media quicktimes to verify how it is creating the timecode and reel info for the resulting clips. Running Media Manager on a sequence with clips that have their media offline will not remove any unused media from the resulting clips, really.
Anyway, if the original poster still needs to recatpure and really wants to remove the unused media before capture, and really has removed the media from his system, I believe the only 2 choices are to use and EDL, which really should work pretty well, though you shouldl read up a bit on the process, or to re-log clips one at a time, which can be easily done by option-dragging timecode values from the browser to the log&capture window.
    Hope this helps -

  • DARK exports from FCP, why?

    Appreciate any help in advance!
When exporting a 422 from FCP, the quicktimes come out as DARK. Way too dark to use.
There's a setting for automatic gamma correction, which is already selected and I let it go. Even without it, clips come out much darker. Is this just a major flaw with FCP? It really *****.
    Thanks!

    Hi creativeescape,
I'm with the same problem with my Final Cut.
I had several tests with some codecs.
Each codec exported has a different gamma.
For instance, if you export a DVCPRO it will be more iluminated than the original take and more than Pro res.
I search for informations and I found some about the digital processing wich FCP does.. aparently it don't processing all data from images. It crop some data from "white and black levels"... Like, if you have an white 100% (255, 255, 255 in 8bits) FCP understand as 235,235,235... something happens with black levels, 16,16,16 instead 0,0,0.
Actually I'm not the best guy to talk about it, because I'm trying to understand why it happens too.. but it can help...
I noted it happens when I capture some from tape too. the image is always more dark than should be. I have an Aja Kona 3.
(but I already noted it in several FCP versions since 4.5 HD, using capture cards like Aja IO, KONA, KONA2 and KONA3 and some Blackmagic cards, all have presented this issues)
(I compared it using an Autodesk Smoke Linux wich use a KONA3 as capture card and it don't happens, nether with a older Smoke with VBOB)
Actually, to discover it you don't need have a broadcast monitor, here I have, but don't need to see it.
You can just put the two clips in different tracks in same sequence to see the gamma diffence.
I'm searching for a solution for it.. If I find I wrote here....
But I need help too.. if someone had this problems too.
    Sorry about my English....

  • Exporting from FCP to DVD

    Hey
Just wondering if I can get some advise. I need to export my project from final cut pro to DVD but just wondering what the best way to do this would be to get the best quality DVD. (This is for a company to take out to potential clients to sell what the company does - so it needs to look good!)
My project is no longer than 5 mins
    1920 x 1080 - 1080i (16:9)
    Field Dominance: None
    frame rate 25
I have Final Cut Studio latest version.
I'm trying out a few options at the moment using compressor - best quality - so we'll see what these look like, but I'm not sure what all the settings should be set at.
Any advise on what you think will be best would be great.
    Thanks

Wouldn't use Quicktime conversion - no need. Just export from FCP as Quicktime Movie at current settings.
In my experience, changing the field dominance from interlaced to progressive can cause stuttering particularly in motion graphics - this might not be an issue if you're laying to tape for broadcast but when you convert back to interlaced for SD DVD it can look very ugly.
In any case, at the very least, you need to be using a Kona card or IOHD to do this type of conversion properly - and really, if you want progressive you should shoot progressive.

  • Capturing media on a laptop with only one firewire input

So, this question may or may not belong here: I have a MacBook Pro with its single Firewire port. I have an external firewire drive for my scratch disk. But how do I capture media from my tape-based Canon HV40 onto the external disk with only the one firewire port? Is there such a thing as a firewire Y-adapter (i.e. two into one) or is that even possible? I'm thinking I may have to capture one tape onto the laptop's drive, then disconnect the camera, connect the external drive, drag the files there, and finally, after all is done, let Final Cut know that the scratch disk has been changed and the media is not on the laptop drive any longer but on the external firewire drive. Suggestions welcome, please.

I realize that the slower device on a daisychain will mean that the fastest speed is limited by the speed of the slowest device
My understanding is the speed of the bus will be restricted if you have the SLOWER of the two devices connected directly to the computer. If it is: FW400>FW800>Computer, each device should connect at their normal speed.
In any case, count yourself among the lucky as Canon cams often will not work when connected on the same firewire bus with other devices.

  • FLV encoding from FCP?

Any tips for software (not too expensive) for encoding FLV direct from FCP or Quicktime?

Nah - but with QuickTime Reference it is almost the same thing... Any reason why you are trying to stay in FCP? I encode all day and usually try and get out of FCP for encoding via QuickTime reference... Not only does it bypass tying up FCP (in version 6 or below) but I have less issues with the encodes.
I had another thought - Make something like this: H.264 Main Profile, 5 Mbps max., 1280×720 max., 30 fps max. Audio: AAC-LC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 48 kHz. Then change its file extension to FLV.
    See what happens.

  • Anyone using Encore to burn to Blu Ray from FCP?

Given that there's no way to burn a "real" HD DVD, is anyone exporting their FCP movies to Adobe Encore and burning to Blu Ray? If so, have you had any success?

I'm yet to Author a BluRay w/ Encore using Media from FCP... but I do Author SD DVD's by exporting DV QT's from FCP then importing and encoding w/ Encore.
Seems like you'd be able to do the same by exporting an HD QT w/ a CODEC that's also on your PC.

  • Huge wim files with sccm 2012 capture media.

So I'm making new image of two new HP models. 850/840 G2.
    Win 7 and Win8.1
Image will have only newest win updates
    Newest device drivers
Problem is that when I use capture media from SCCM 2012 R2, the WIM files are around 40-50Gb. And I'm a bit lost with this and don't know what to do.
I did all the things in same way like it was with G1 models. And then the WIM size was 9-11Gb.
I checked the inside of the wim file and there was hiberfil.sys files etc  that are 16Gb as the RAM on the machine is the same ammount. Ram ammount was same in the G1 models also and this didn't happen. Also winsxs folder was under windows and that was
    way over 10Gb.
Also one thing that is strange is that during capture, it captures 3 volumes. Disk should only have that 350MB and the windows installation.
Anyone have had this kind of experience?

    Hi
I don't know exactly how I should go with the virtual machine thing .
This is just a small part in my work that I do, so I have done it the most "fastest" way for my self.
Basically I just need 2-3 images with machine drivers and windows update installed.
If making image trough virtual machine would require me to create driver package for each model and then notice that x amount of devices still don't get installed and I would need to create installation package of those missing drivers. That is something I
    don't have time for...
Also when using driver package and installation for some special drivers from their won packages it feels that it takes long. And if i have my stuff already in the WIM file, things go smoothly much faster.
But if the virtualmachine trick is somehow superior, hit me with url. Thank you!
Strange thing is that some time ago all worked fine. And I was thinking that if someone has seen this kind of problem before.
It somewhow feels that it's capturing all the drives I have attached to machine. Volyme 3 of 3. And volyme is a disk? Not a partition?
I had usb stick (sccm capture media), machine harddriver with 350mb partition and the windows partition. Also external USB disk that it should save the WIM into.
Probaply next I will test the same machine with different harddrive...

  • Hard Drives needs Freeing Up from FCP Renders

Hello . . . Is it just a case of dragging unwanted files and projects into the Trash from the Render Files and Autosave vault to free up space on my G5 Hard drive and External Hard Drive so I can continue to Log and Capture new footage?

That is certainly a way of doing it. Render Files will give you a lot of space (if you have many of them).
Another place to get space back is from your Capture Scratch folders. Careful with these, though, as this is the footage you have used for cutting. If you "Log and Captured" instead of using the Capture Now feature and you still have the tapes, you can recapture later if you need to. So, if you have used "Log and Capture" and you have the tapes and the Project files, you can delete the Captured media from projects you are done with for now.
I don't think you'll get much space back from the Autosaved project files. They just aren't that big.
Be very careful that you don't delete anything you don't know how to get back if you need it. And make sure you only delete what you want to.
You also have to Empty the Trash to get your space. But one last warning: When you Empty it is gone.
    Hope that helps!

  • Capturing footage to FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVRZ1U HD Camera

I'm doing an HD project using a Sony HVRZ1U camera. I'm capturing footage from a Sony HDV GV-HD700 deck. I get nothing in the viewer when I go to log and capture and I cannot capture anything when I press capture because there is no video signal. I can see video on the viewer for the deck. When I change the settings on the deck from AV-DV out, I can see a stretched version in DV quality when I change the settings. I just cannot see a HDV signal to my computer. What are the correct settings for capturing this format? I've tried all the various possibilities and haven't been successful. The deck is connected to the computer via firewire to the HDV/DV iLink cable. Is this deck compatible with FCP? Is the video too much info for the computer?

When setting any Sony HDV device to output HDV you should disconnect the ilink/wirefire cable first, in the menu find Rec In/Out and set the ilink Conv to OFF for HDV. Then connect to the computer when both computer and deck are turned off.
If you have 6.0.1 then why not updated to the latest version, if you do update you will also need to update Quicktime.
