Trim lines ??

Hello anyone
I'm trying to learn illustrator cs2 on my own and am having some issues with a few basic functions.  I am drawing shapes using the rectangle, ellipses and trying to join them together.  How do i trim 2 lines together to make a corner.  I would like to cut off the exess at the ends by cutting to the other lines.  I know this seems basic but I can't figure it out.  In the end I want to make a figure using all the drawing tools  ( pen, line, shapes etc) and have the outline just one feature.  help please

Interesting workaround. Thanks for the link.
Seems to effectively 'fool' Illustrator into using pathfinder by 'filling' the lines, which seems like a contradiction. Still quite alot of steps to accomplish a simple corner trim, haven't counted the 'clicks' but suspect it is about the same - or perhaps more by the time you've reallocated the line thicknesses - than using the Scisors.
Anyhow, I'm not sure if either of the previous replies were yours.  IMHO the following:
"Have you looked through the online help at all? You don't learn a program like Illustrator by just poking around in it.
You are misunderstanding the most basic principles of the program."
Is neither polite nor helpful.
"How do i trim 2 lines together to make a corner.  I would like to cut off the exess at the ends by cutting to the other lines." seems like a perfectly legitimate question that does not "misunderstand the most basic principles of the program."  It simply seems to be asking how to perform a basic line-work function that Illustrator just happens to make a right old meal out of.  AI deals with complex filled forms in any number of clever ways, but there is an anomaly by which two simple crossed lines that one wants to trim back seem to require multiple steps.
The next section of text gives lots of possibilities but no method or sequence.
You say that "What is rude to one is valuable advice to others." I would suggest that advice can be rude and valuable simultaneously, but that the best advice is also valuable but does not make the recipient feel belittled.
Anyhow, I suspect Shorrtty would be the best judge of that. However, I note there was no grateful thanks as has been for some of his other answered questions.

  • Basic printing questions with safe zones, trim lines and bleeds

    I am working with a file that has safe zones, trim lines and bleeds. If I place something that touches the outer edges of the document at the bleed zone, how will it display if there is a trim line before it? Won't it be trimmed anyways?
    Thanks.

    Consider the bleed a precautionary measure in the case of registration variance when cutting the actual printed product.
    So it should be cut off, but it may actually become visible (partially).

  • Cropping PDF's to Trim Lines

    I'm having trouble finding a way to crop my pdf's to the trim lines in automator. I have used the Preview Crop to crop images, but that is not working for what I'm trying to accomplish. I have inconsistent sized pdf's that just need to be cropped to one standard size. Would someone be able to help? Thank you!

    Do you by chance have Preview turned on in your Windows dialogs? Sometimes this seems to interfere. You can find more detail about this in this discussion:

  • Any way to trim line ends?

    I used the shape builder tool in CS5 to "trim" the blue lines as they overlapped the rectangle boundary.  Is there a better way to trim the lines so that the ends of the lines but up to the border rectangle?  Any other ideas how to accomplish the same thing?
    Thanks for any advice on this problem.

    One way would be to use the crop button in the pathfinder palette. Select all and click on the crop button. (note: I added another dark blue rectangle in the back after cropping).

  • How do I trim lines?

    I am new to illustrator. Please explain in detail how to trim the dash lines so they don't go past the "edge" of the thermometor on the right.  When I try to clip or use any tools basically it deletes the entire line or distorts it.  See picture.

    mmadams,
    Sorry, I was, presumably wrongly, thinking of filled paths as the rounded lines. I now believe they are just simple paths with heavy strokes. Is that right?
    If it is, you may place the copy of the outer (white) path in front, select that and the lines, and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.

  • Adding bleed and trim lines with Pages?

    Hi - I a designing a book with Pages. The printing company wants trim and bleed lines to show in the final pdf. How do I add trim and bleed lines to each page in Pages? Also, they want fonts embedded. Does this happen automatically when crreating the PDF?

    Already checked that, Twitch. All the check boxes you mentioned already unchecked.

  • Change color of trim guide lines?

    Is it possible to change the color of the guide lines that indicate trim from black to something else? I often use black or very dark background colors and when I'm checking bleed and other things close to the trim line, the guide becomes almost impossible to see. I hope the answer is yes, but I can't see where to do it. In Preferences it seems possible to change the color of all the other guide lines, but not the trim lines.
    Any help much appreciated.
    thanks!

    I don't think there is a way to change it. But you could add a new layer with a Frame the size of your trim, give it any color stroke that you want, put it on top of all the other layers, lock it, and you'll have what you want.

    Try this:
    String trimmedLine = lineFromFile.trim();
    if ("".equals(trimmedLine))
        // logic for trimmed line
    }That's some ugly procedural code. Long "if/else if/else" is a very bad sign.
    I'd advise that you at least move this mess out of main() and into a method that you could just call. I don't know if this will be reusable or not, but you won't have a chance of it being callable in another context if you leave it all in main().

  • HELP - Trim marks in bleed area won't print

    Using Illustrator CS3 I have imposed an item 8up on the artboard with manually created trim and score lines within the bleed area. For some reason the lines will not print.
    - I have checked the attributes and the lines have not been selected as non-printing items.
    - I have created the lines with the line tool in registration colour and placed them 2mm away from the edge of the artboard.
    - In the print setup I checked the page trim marks on.
    - In the print setup I set the bleed to 5mm and when that did not show the manual trim lines I even tried 10mm.
    - When the document prints the only trim marks that appear are the page size crop marks applied during print setup.
    - The objects overlapping from the artboard into the bleed area print but the trim lines that do not touch the artboard won't print.
    I have previously been using CS2 and this method has been working fine until I upgraded to CS3. Has anything changed? Why is this no longer working? Is there a preference somewhere that tells illustrator to not print items that don't touch the artboard?
    Can someone please help as this is causing me lots of problems.

    Thanks for your quick response and link.
    While I was searching for a solution to this problem I actually posted on that site with another solution for importing files into InDesign with bleed. (Anonymous said... 2/15/2008 1:42 AM)
    I do find your post helpful for printing illustration files placed in Indesign. However is there no solution to printing directly from illustrator apart from increasing the document size?
    Is the bug only recent to CS3? I could print directly from Illustrator CS2 and the lines and bleed would print.
    If I group all of the trim / score lines would they print then?
    I don't understand why this has changed. How painful.

  • Double sided card in Indesign

    Hi,
    I have a problem with creating some double sided cards in Indesign and I was hoping that someone can help me please?
    I have to create double sided cards in Indesign, so each side of the card has a border and crop marks in the exact same place. Each side is also a separate pdf file.(a front pdf and a back pdf). I cannot make these as a single pdf and print because the printing is on card, which is on the bypass try of the printer.
    I need to print this double sided and then chop the edges off using the crop marks as guides. I have tried printing these files - so I place the card on the bypass tray and print the front, then place the card back on the bypass tray and print the back - in the exact same place. But when I print this, one side of the card always prints to the side - meaning the crop marks are misaligned for chopping.
    I'm wondeing if there is anything I need to do in Indesign rather than the printer to print so that the crop marks on the same place on either side of the card.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks very much
    pd

    As Bob says, desktop printers, and even commercial copiers generally don't have the kind of precision for sheet-to-sheet and front to back registration accuracy.
    Avoid borders closer than about .25 inches to the trim line unless you plan to cut each card by hand. Even the fronts won't be perfectly aligned to each other in the stack so you need to allow for some drift in the design. The further you keep anything from the edge that will lead the eye to see a mis-alignment the less likely anyone is to notice. A hard, narrow border is not a good choice for this sort of output.
    Leave the border off the back completely if you can, and allow as much margin as possible to hide the shift there, too, and trim for the front side as that is presumably the most important.

  • Sun JVM works, Microsoft VM gives an error

         String vergelijkLines = lines.toLowerCase();//Hoofdletters maakt niet uit
         int plaatsTerm = vergelijkLines.indexOf(term);//plaatsen opzoeken van de tags

              lines = lines.substring(plaatsTerm,plaatsEindTerm);//tekst kopieren
         } else {
              lines="";//anders niks teruggeven
    It works fine on my computer with the sun jvm, but it doesn't seem te work if you have the microsoft vm installed. I still want to make the applet compatibel for other people. What can I do about this?

    There is a way to enable the IE Java console - try googling for instructions. There's a good chance the console displays an error message. Or if it doesn't, add debugging println's to pinpoint where something goes wrong.
    The MS JVM is old and has bugs, including security bugs. If the users of your applet are in any way important to you (such as paying customers), try to get them to dump the MS JVM. They are opening themselves up to worms and such nastiness.
    By the way, ' if (line != "")' isn't right, you need 'if (!line.equals(""))'.

  • Leopard (10.5.2) and iPhoto 6.06 problems

    I just upgraded to 10.5.2 and am having difficulty using my Canon Pixma iP6600D printer. I can print from AppleWorks and web pages, however, when I attempt to print any pictures using iPhoto 6.06 the printer only goes a few lines and then stops. I have already downloaded the latest 10.5 drivers for the printer from Canon.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have a feeling that I will have to go out and purchase the latest version of iPhoto.
    Thanks,

    Hi Thierry,
    I have tried that too. It still does not make sense. I can print several pages of text and graphics from the internet with no problems. Then I try to print a picture using iPhoto 6.06 and it stops printing. I have also been able to use "Comic Life" without any problems, which also contains pictures.
    Still puzzled????
    JeffSh
    Hi Jeff,
    I understand it's puzzling. I can't decide for you. Here are some information for your understanding, that could help you.
    I've just done this test for you:
    - I've Paused the print spool for my office HP 4600 Color LaserJet
    - I've queued one print job: one photo printed from iPhoto
    - I've queued one other print job: a 5 pages Word document (with graphics in it)
    Here is my CUPS (CUPS is the printing framework used by MacOSX) print spool queue. The "-155" job is the iPhoto job and "-156" is my Word job. The one-page iPhoto job is already 3 times bigger in bytes count than the Word 5 pages with graphics job.
    When you say that your printer starts printing then pauses, it means to me you have a transmission problem somewhere. It can be the printer driver (PPD) not knowing exactly how much RAM you printer have. It can be many thing that cause your printer to not get the whole data set.
    At home, I have an HP WiFi printer. It's fine for Word docs printing. But on some occasion, the WiFi thing simply doesn't work and get printings to stall half way done. So I prefer to hook my MBP on my Ethernet Switch and print while on 100baseT when I know I'm going to generate very big raster files.
    This is only to get you some leads to look for other possible causes than just the application who generate the raster that then will be handled by many other OS layers.
    I hope this helps.

                                                                Nu-Steel Pre-Engineered buildings help you in erecting your structures easily and conveniently.
                                                                The structures are strong, easy to build and are also economically priced.  Many of our customers choose
                                                                to erect their buildings themselves.  All structural pieces come pre-drilled and pre-cut ready for
                                                                assembly - no welding required.  Nu-Steel buildings are shipped with user friendly manuals while the
                                                                knowledgeable staff can answer any questions you may have during assembly.  Pre-Engineered builings,
                                                                depending on complexity, are usually shipped within 4 - 6 weeks from the time the drafts are approved.
