Trim to Size

Hi All,
I have a pdf document created with cropping marks. How do I trim/crop to size as when I used the Marquee Zoom to zoom the Cropping tool is not visible. If I am cropping on page view, it will be too small to crop. Pls advise. TQ

Set the zoom you want from the toolbar, then choose the crop tool. It works in a straight forward manner.

  • Displaying trim box size with Acrobat Reader

I am looking for a way to have Acrobat Reader display Trim Box size. We have many Customer Service Reps and Sales people who receive PDFs from clients and cannot tell what the Trim Box size is except for asking me. I have Acrobat Pro and can easily find the information, but I am tired of being constantly asked. It does not make sense for all them to have Acrobat Pro.  Any help is appreciated.

You need to Reader-enable the document, which allows Reader to do things it normally cannot. In Acrobat 9, you'd select: Advanced > Extend Features in Adobe Reader
In Acrobat 8 it's something different but very similar. Note that some people have reported problems when trying to use an enabled document in a different version of Reader than the version of Acrobat that was used to enable the document.

  • Crop to trim: Page size may not be reduced ERROR

I have a client wanting the complete back catalogue of his journal's hi-res PDFs supplied but without the trim marks, printer's info and bleed. This ought to be easy enough - Acrobat will trim a PDF for me and I can automate the process. Except that it won't. I go Documents > Crop Pages... and set all the options for cropping to  the Trim Box, but nothing happens. If I try putting in the page size measurements manually, I get the error message 'Page size cannot be reduced'. Seeing as I've arrived via the Crop Pages option on the document menu I can't think I'm in the wrong place. Why won't Acrobat crop my pages?
I'm on Acrobat Pro 9 fully up to date on OS X 10.6.7

  • Trimming distribution size

Since I have a considerable number of built LabVIEW applications, and sometimes send new installers out by e-mail, it is very important to keep the sizes small. Still, I would like to provide an installer, and not just the executables.
(Of course I don't built installers containing the runtime engine, but simply request that it be downloaded and installed from NI. This saves considerable volume)
The builder (LabVIEW 7.1) generates 6 installer files:
    -- data.cab (variable size)
    -- install.msi (1616KB)
    -- InstMsi.exe (1460KB)
    -- InstMsiW.exe (1470KB)
    -- setup.exe (68KB)
    -- setup.ini (1KB)
The last two are small, so I don't worry about them. Obviously, I need to include the data.cab. Install.msi is also a changing file, thus must
    be included.
This leaves InstMsi and InstMsiW. These seem to be just some version of the windows installer, similar to what can be downloaded from Microsoft.
First, "InstMsi" seems to be for Windows 9x only. Since LabVIEW 7.1 only supports Windows 2000 and higher, it is not clear why it is even there.
"InstMsiW" is the Windows 2000, XP equivalent. On all PCs I tried, the installation works without problem even if this file is not present. Obviously, all these PCs already contain the functionality of it as part of the OS.
For a while now, I've been distributing zip archives of only 4 files (leaving out the instmsi*). The archives are sub-megabyte, instead of 3+ MB with all six files. Nobody ever had an problems installing.
Is it sound to leave these files out? What the worst case scenario if these are not included?
LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

Oops, I misread, I thought you were not shipping the setup.exe or setup.ini, therefore my comment. People generally expect a setup.exe so it is probably a good thing to ship it. And yes if they have installed the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine first (or any installer that uses MSI) MSI should be installed/up to date, so setup.exe won't have to look for either InstMsi exe.
The reason InstMsi.exe is still being included is to cover one of the corner cases. Setup.exe is very generic and can be used on any Windows OS. 95 & 98 predate MSI, so they don't ship with any version of it (I think ME has it but it might be 1.0). The install.msi actually contains the logic to check for NT/2000/XP. But in order for it to run MSI must be installed. So ther
e is the possibility of someone running setup.exe on a 9x machine without MSI, it looks for InstMsi.exe, if it didn't find it and an error about InstMsi.exe is returned, this isn't useful to the end user. However if InstMsi.exe is there, then MSI is installed, the system asks to be rebooted, it launches install.msi and then is able to pop-up that NT/2000/XP is required. Which is really the message you want your end user to see.
Not a pretty corner case, but one that is still being covered for now. Setup.exe should probably be made smarter, but it seems the standard is to put the OS check in the installer itself.

  • Very large file 1.6 GB..sports program for school. lots of photos, template where media spots saved and dropped photos in..trying to get it to printer swho says its too large but when reduces size loses all quality...HELP??

Please help...large file my sons Athletic program. Had noto problem with Quality last year..this new printer said file is too large..too many layers, can I FLATTEN..He reduced size and photos look awful. It is 81 pages. Have to have complete before next friday!! Help anyone??

At that size it sounds like you have inserted lots of photos at too large a size and resolution.
Especially for a year book style project, first determine your image sizes and crop and fix the resolution to 300 dpi, then drag them into the publication. Pages does not use external references to files and rapidly grows to quite large size unless you trim and size your images before placement.

  • Fast trim box info?

In preferences I can set "Always show document page size" so the PDF's full size always show in the lower left corner (without hovering the cursor there).
    Nice.
But I need the trim box size some 50-100 times a day, which I can only do by selecting the crop pages-menu and picking trim box from the drop down.
Is there ANY way to have the trim box info show in a fast and available manner?
    Thanks

Have you actually turned on the option for 'trim, art and bleed' boxes
under Preferences / Page Display? Not perfect as such since it does NOT
show the XY but it's maybe better than what you're used to.
Creo used to have a plug-in but many of these have not been updated to
    Acrobat 7 / 8 etc.
Preflight is another option - you can even use a droplet?

  • File Size Improvements in CS4?

I have found someinteresting things in CS4. Doing the same project as last year my total file size seemed much smaller. I opened my catalog from last year. 32 pages/tons of images 1.5 gigs. I saved that file as another name which trims size. The sie went from 1.5 gigs to 1 gig. I then export the file as inx and reopen and save as another file. Now down to 100,000K. Basically a file that is 95% smaller than the original. That is a huge improvent for me. Those on CS3 should try this and see if it helps. I know save as another file and the inx trick does trim file size. As you work on a project you should do this for performance reasons. I am doing this on windows. Not sure if this works on mac.
    rob

The 1.5 gig file was a cs3 file from last year all linked images none embedded. Other similar projects ran approx 1 gig or slightly less. The CS4 file this year stared out much smaller and I think the entire file is 100,000K approx.

  • Creating Trimmed Project in Project Manager

When I select "Create New Trimmed Project", the resulting project size is exactly the same as the original project even though the sequence only uses a small fraction of the footage in the project. Am I doing something wrong?

Collected media is what I expected to be dramatically smaller, but all of the media files are exactly the same size in both the original folder and the new folder than contains the "trimmed" project.(4.5GB).
Before trimming, the project manager reports the original project size as well as the estimated trimmed project size to be 4.5GB.
When I added the clips to the timeline, I used "set in point" and "set out point" in the source frame and then dragged the clip to the timeline. This is the way I have always done it, but this is the first time I am trying to create a trimmed project, so maybe it is not the correct way.
The option "Create New Trimmed Project" is what I have selected in the project manager.

  • I want to buy a clear iskin keyboard protector for my new MacBook pro 15" but on amazon the description does not say if it is for 13" or 15" MacBooks. Are the keyboards the same size?

    Does anyone know?

Oops, sorry, got hung up in other matters. Here's a pic of the protector on the colleague's Mac. He tells me that it if hangs out too much, you can always take a scissor to it and trim to size. Personally, being a 10-finger touch typist, I find the feel of the skin totally icky and throws off my typing rythmn, but he seems to be quite happy with the thing. To each his own...

  • Backgroup processes size

the size of the alert log and other files generated by background processes are getting high! would like to know if these files can be deleted and if also ai can trim the size of the alertlog on a regular basis.
    thanks in advance.

Generally it's harmless to delete these files. They are for troubleshooting purpose. alert log is frequently used by Oracle for logging purpose. If you remove it while server is running, oracle will create a new one.
Since all these file are text files, you usually get very good compress ratio if you zip them. I will suggest you run gzip to zip them. and have an alert log rotation script.
    You can use
    oracle_trace_collection_size
to limit the trace file size.

  • New to InDesign: things I need to know before starting my 200-page book?

Hi there (second time attempting to post this; sorry if both somehow end up on the discussion page—this version is my most recent)—
I'd practically completed a 180-page cookbook—lots of photos and recipes, instructions and comments—in Apple Pages ('cause I'm on a Mac and Pages seemed pretty straightforward) when I realized that not being able to see the book in a facing-pages view was completely ridiculous.  So I'm trying InDesign, and already I can see that this is THE app for what I'm doing.  I purchased a hard copy of the InDesign Classroom in a Book 2014 book, which I'm slowly going through... but I'm so incredibly eager and going page by page is so slow.  I will keep going through the book, but in the meantime, would people on this forum mind making sure I'm starting off on the right foot?  (I don’t want to get too far along and then discover that I should have been doing things completely differently).
Question One:  Many of my pages will be for recipes, of course—name of the dish at the top (white text on a black background), photo below, and below that the list of ingredients and the instructions.  So should I create a Master Page just for recipes?  That would seem to make sense, as all of the recipes will be organized on the page in the same way.  But what about all the other parts of the book (Preface, Table of Contents, various pages of commentary, pages of photos, etc.) that are different from one another?
Should I create other Master Pages for other parts of the book?
Question Two:  given that I’m planning to have all the pages printed at a printing house, and then bound into book form… should all my ‘left-hand’ Master Pages leave an extra wide margin on the right (to account for the part of the page that’s bound/glued) and, similarly, should all my right-hand Master Pages leave extra room on the left?  How much extra room do I need for this?
Question Three:  I really don't know enough about InDesign to even know what other question to ask, so maybe I'm safest to ask this:  are there settings I should 'build in' now, so I don't find myself trying to do it later, when it's much more difficult?  As I say, I'm going to keep struggling with the book (so many lessons seem to have nothing to do with my particular project, but I know I have to keep plugging away).  I do want to get my cookbook off on the right foot though.
Thanks so much for any advice,
    Malcolm

Presumable the book will be divided into sections (chapters) to make it more accessible. (1) front matter – title page, imprint/copyright, TOC etc. these tend not to have pages numbers (2) Individual chapters – e.g. Starters, Main courses, Puddings, Drinks  (3) back matter e.g Index.
The simplest approach is to have page numbers on your master page with running headers – that is the name of the book at the top of the left hand page and the name of each chapter on the right hand page, and guides for the repeating elements.
Produce and print out a couple of specimen pages of the recipe pages to see how your design looks and how easy it is read/use and how you will allow in the design for short and long menu headings and recipes etc. Use paragraph, character and object styles in your design. You wouldn't need extra space for perfect binding, look at similar books of the same trimmed pages size to see what kind of margins they have.
The cover artwork should be produced as a separate document as it will be printed separately on heavier stock.
Check you have an economical page size for printing (talk to your printer) discuss the paper you might choose and how many pages in a printed section. Also what kind of PDF s/he wants.

  • How to limit /var/adm/wtmpx and /var/adm/lastlog

    Hi,
As many others I have a problem too with these files growing indefinitely.
I wanted to know if there is any system configuration or system program to limit or trim the size of these files.
I am OK if the oldest records get purged, but I don't want these files to grow indefinitely.
I appreaciate any suggestions and help.
    Thanks
    Srini

I think the easiest would be to use 'dd' to copy the file to a temporary area and then back again:
    dd if=/var/adm/wtmpx of=/tmp/wtmpx.save bs=372
    dd if=/tmp/wtmpx.save of=/var/adm/wtmpx bs=372 skip=$number_of_blocks_to_skip
The variable $number_of_blocks_to_skip is simply an arbitrary number you're comfortable with. You can build that up by using 'wc' to find the number of lines (blocks) in the file:
    wsize=`wc -l /var/adm/wtmpx | awk ' { print $1 } '`
number_of_blocks_to_skip= `expr $wize - 1000` (this will ensure that the skip is until 1000 blocks from the end)

  • Adding fold lines in illustrator

Is there a way to add a dashed fold line in the bleed for a printer to know where to fold my greeting cards?

    Larry G. Schneider wrote:
Are you really using the bleed and trimming to size? If so, then just add a dashed line where you need on a separate layer called fold.
And for good measure, make the dashed line in a spot color called FOLD, and set it to Overprint Stroke. (This will make is a bit less likely than a careless printer will print your line, and it will prevent it from knocking out your 4-color work)

  • Inner Margin Question

    Hi everyone,
I am designing an art catalog on 240 pages, size 200x280 mm, which will be perfectly bound.
I wanted to have the outer margin larger than the other margins, however, I am not sure about the inner margin size - I originally set it at 15 mm, but now I am thinking it should be larger?
Also, should I use inner margin bleed, as I have 2-page images on some of the pages?
    Thanks for your help.

Is there a special reason for making your book just slightly smaller than A4 - your size doesn't seem to be one thing or the other.
Margins are rather subjective. I suggest you go into a bookshop and look at books that are around your selected size and with the kind of design and content you want  and see which margins seems to work best.
You wouldn't have inside bleed on books that are printed in sections.
If your book is to be perfect bound, you will also need to produce cover artwork. This will be printed separately on heavier stock than the text and maybe laminated. The flat size of the cover artwork should be twice the size of the text trimmed page size plus and allowance for the spine.
Design your book in double page spreads and supply the printer with single page PDFs with printers marks. Discuss with your printer all technical matters before proceeding.

  • Premiere crashes when opening GoPro Studio cineform AVI files

First off, I'm a newb when it comes to video editing.  I just purchased Premiere Pro on a month to month basis to compile a bunch of vacation footage I took on my new GoPro.
I used GoPro Studio to edit the raw footage into hundreds of useable clips.  I took the videos in 1280x720 @ 120fps.  I used the default settings to trim the footage.
Any idea what I can do to get Premiere to open these files?
note:  I can open the original gopro footage without issue.

Yes I did try creating a new project using the software only option, to no avail.  The GoPro Studio was downloaded and installed only 2 days ago.
I could Convert all the clips again since the project is still saved.  These are my "Advanced" options when on Step 1 - View & Trim:
    Image Size (source)
    Frame Rate (source 119.88fps)
File Format (AVI, or MOV) - there is no MP4 option
Quality (low, med, high) - med is default and what I used previously
    Remove Fisheye (unchecked)
If I was going to transcode the clips using another codec, which software would you recommend?  I'd ideally like to keep the 120 fps because I plan to slow a lot of them down.
