Triming VOB for export to mov

Hi there,
I don't seem to be able to use the "trim to selection" feature when i have a vob file open in Quicktime. Am I not able to trim these files before export?
I've got QT pro with the mpeg2 component.
Thanks indavance!

Actually MPEG Streamclip is very simple to use (it's no harder than QT as for in/out trim and cut) so this reply makes no sense.
Get the right program ,which is free, and note you will need the MPEG-2 decoder as VOB's are MPEG-2 (DVD format) . If they are AC3 audio as they most likely are, QT won't play AC3 anyway, and exporting MPEG (1 or 2 regardless of audio codec) you lose the audio, so MPEG Streamclip is the way to go. And QT is not.
Note a search here would have shown thousands of posts (not exaggerating) on this very subject .
Note to the above in Streamclip you don't save as a VOB file you save as a MPEG file. A VOB file (Video OBject) is just a standard MPEG-2 file anyway. Use an MPEG/MPG extension.

  • Best settings for highest quality for exporting a .mov  file to h.264

    Hi,
I want to know what the best settings are for the highest quality for exporting a .mov file (720p50) to h.264. I want the same quality as the original.
I want to know the data rate etc.
    regards,
    Jeroen
    Message was edited by: Woudgraaf-AV

There is no way to get the exact same quality when transcoding from an editing source to a highly compressed H.264 QT. However, you can get a real high quality by adjusting the data rate.
However, these things depend on the length of the original. I routinely encode H.264s with good results in the 3000-5000 data rate range. I also make sure that I use multiple pass encoding. Take a short snippet of your project (10 seconds or so), and try various bit rates until you have one you like that doesn't take forever.

When you converted the original files via MPEG Streamclip, what did you convert them to?

  • Best practice for exporting a .mov file for YouTube

I am using FCPX 10.0.9 with a MacBook Pro. We are needing to upload relatively small-size high school football videos as .mov files to YouTube for my newspaper. I have been choosing the Export File option with the setting set to h.264, exporting the file to the desktop and then uploading that .mov file to YouTube. (I do not have Compressor installed on this Mac.) The other night the first of three files done like this uploaded fine, but the next two just kept processing and processing at YouTube and never finished. The following morning the files processed fine. Any thoughts about why ths might be happening?
And would it be better to export in another file format --.mp4 files -- instead that might cause less of a problem and which of the export options would be best?
    Thanks,
    Douglas

    douglas i wrote:
Am I correctly uploading a .mov file to YouTube by using the Export File command with the export setting set to .h264 then if I wish a reasonable size file for upload?
Sure. There are many ways to get videos to YT and yours is a reasonable approach.
"Reasonable size" should be thought of in terms of upload time. Again, YT will re-compress whatever you give it. So depending on how quickly you need to get it up on the Web, it's better to upload files that have more information than less information. (To that end, some folks upload very large Pro Res files; they also have a lot of patience.)
Just to let you know, the majority of FCPX users follow one of two workflows:
    1) Share>You Tube option and have FCP handle the uploading;
    2) Export as a Pro Res Master File; bring the master file into Compressor and apply the user's custom settings; upload using YT's uploader.
FWIW, I prefer the second workflow.

  • Best MPEG Streamclip settings for exporting a .mov file? Please help!

Am really stuck... I have a 1.6GB VOB file (which also exists in copy as a 2GB and a 1GB .mov file). I need to make a quicktime copy of the movie to upload online, but the maximum limit is 500MB. Because it's for a contact for a film festival, it needs to be as high quality as humanly possible, but has to be sent online. What precise settings should I use? I'm in the UK. Can anyone help me? Would be seriously grateful.

We don't care how big the original is; it is the length that matters. Take your limit of 500MB and multiply by 1024 to get megabits. Divide that number by the length in seconds of your movie. That is your bitrate in megabits per second. Duplicate one of the best-quality presets and change the bitrate. Make sure all the high quality options are on.

  • Help Emergency for Exporting Quicktime Movie from FCP

    Hello -
Not sure if anyone is up at this hour, but I have a huge grant deadline TODAY and we are having trouble getting my film trailer onto a DVD. NOT newbies, checked manuals and searched more than a few forums.
Details: 11-minute sequence made with FCP version 5.0.3 G4 Tower Dual 800 Processor.
Following suggestions found here and other places, we selected sequence in FCP > Export > Using Quicktime Conversion
There is supposed to be an MPEG 2 format choice that comes up but it does not. Other choices but not MPEG 2.
In the past the editor has exported as a regular quicktime movie, self-contained, and dragged it into DVDSP and the conversion was done in DVDSP. When we try that we get "incompatible format."
So we have the trailer sequence as a regular quicktime movie, and an MPEG4 which may be of use as a coaster since from what I've read it's not readable in most DVD players.
Is there any way to convert the MPEG 4 sequence to MPEG 2 so it can be seen on a DVD player?
Please, Please help with any suggestions. Manuals HAVE been consulted prior to posting. Have been up all night, and I have to get this trailer in today. thank you for any help you can offer.

so we have one cooking in the oven now -
we ended up going with Best/120min/4:3 because the 90-min one didn't allow us to choose "all"
It's an 11-minute sequence, and hopefully in not-too-long it will be recorded on a DVD. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you responded to my smoke signal! (I am, in fact, quite fried at this point).
I'm kind of surprised that after an hour searching about this on this forum and others, no mention of how to actually do this despite a lot of mentions of "threads about this." I tried so many searches using different terms and date ranges, but i'm just glad that you were at or near your computer.
Again, thank you and sending lots of gratitude from NY. It's still cooking, so hopefully I'm out of the woods, but it will be nice if things go smoother now that the sun is up over here.
    grazie

  • Exporting my movie

I am using Final Cut Express 4. One of my files is in .wmv and I have downloaded Flip4mac.
I have followed the User Manual's steps for exporting a movie. I have clicked on Clear In and Out to export my whole sequence. But whenever the movie is being written, it freezes at 98% percent and the amount of time given is less than a minute. To conclude, my movie cannot be exported.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to do something else? Please answer.

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

    • Mac OS - most probably X.7 or more

  • What are the settings for exporting the best possible quality movies?

I'm trying to export movies using imove 11, there are a ton of export setting, im wondering which are the best for exporting top quality movies? assuming file size doesnt matter.

ok so heres what the movie inspector says:
    Format: Photo- JPEG, 1024 x 576, Million Linear PCM, 24 bit little-endian signed integer, 2channels, 44100 Hz
    FPS: 17.80
    Data Rate:9.63 mbit/s
    Current Size:1024 x 576 pixels (actual)
So do i want to somehow duplicate these settings?
The other thing I was thinking about was opening the file in Quicktime and using the "trim" feature to edit it down that way, although its not as neat.  Would this preserve the quality? And would it get rid of the excess footage (which is what I want)? Or would it like keep that footage attached to the file somehow?
    Thanks

I have an external hard drive which has my i-photo on it & some movies from i-movie that I have on disk now. But for some reason my ehd has a caution symbol on it & I can't move my event to free up space on my hd so that I can export i-movie events. Help!

Usually the caution symbol means that it's formatted as a PC compatible format like NTFS or most likely FAT32. For iMovie to use it the ehd must be formatted Mac OS Extended. Then iMovie will show it without the caution symbol and you can drag/drop open any Event/Project from that hard drive.
To find out if it's formatted as PC:
Go to the desktop, holding down the Control key click on that ehd and in the pop-menu choose 'Get Info'
Under Format: It will say whether or not it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The only way to undo a PC formatted ehd would be to copy everything off of it first, Erase/Format the drive using Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder on your Mac, choosing the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format in the pull-down menu there.

  • Placing SWF Movie into IDCS4 for export to PDF

I'm trying to place a swf into an Indesign document for export to PDF.
I made a simple swf using Flash CS4 (AS2 if it matters) and placed it using the File->Place menu.
I checked the Movie Options and selected, Embed in PDF, and play options.
Then I export to PDF and am sure that Interactive Elements is checked.
I found someplace that suggested toggling "create tagged PDF" to the opposite setting of whatever it is, but that didn't make any difference.
When I open the PDF with Acrobat and move to that page it just shows the default movie preview and shows a "buffering" window for ever, but the file is tiny so it should load immediately.
So how do I do this? Is it possible? I've tried some searches, but most everything I'm finding is about exporting ID docs to swf. And that isn't what I want.
At least I don't think this is what I want. I need to make a PDF that will have an animation of how to navigate a web app. So if anybody has a better way to do this, then please let me know!

I wrote up a very long explanation of this for indesignsecrets.com.
    http://indesignsecrets.com/putting-swfs-into-indesign-documents.php
    The bottom line is:
It's a bug on the Mac
Windows users can play those SWFs but the Mac hangs
Adobe is aware of the problem
But if you want an SWF to play on both Mac and Windows, open the PDF in Acrobat Professional and add the SWF there.
You will actually have more control than if you had placed it in InDesign and it played correctly.

  • Exporting QT movie that works for any browser

I started with a 922 MB slideshow with music exported from itunes
saved from QT for web it is 4KB will play in QT only if you set connection speed to slow modem (28.8/33.6 Kbps) and not at all in some Explorer Browsers even with the QT plugin.
I noticed that there is an demo Flip 4 Mac option to export the movie as a Movie to Windows Media wmv file. The demo only works for a few seconds. Is there a better way to make this movie work across all platforms without having to upgrade Flip4?
    The movie is at

    thanks!

Exporting to WMV won't make it work across all platforms it will make it work for Windows (and force every mac user to get Flip4mac).
You can manually export in QT Pro to a size and quality you are happier with than 4KB from 922 MB (quite the compression!). That is so small I wonder if it is a reference movie and not the final movie?
Most web pages use Flash for these clips, you can convert to flash free by the backdoor method - create a YouTube account; upload to Youtube then use one of the Firefox tools to download (like Video Downloader) your FLV file they made for you. I presume you can take things down from Youtube, if not, label it something like chlorophyll synthesis in cabbages and nobody will find it anyway.

  • What is the best setting for export movie in widescreen format?

Please tell me what is the best setting for exporting movie in Widescreen format?

Like in After effect we use "NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel".,
Carefully examine the codec and pixel dimensions of that output file. That's certainly easy for an experienced VFX person like yourself.
Then carefully look over the presets in FCP to find the same attibutes. You can also use the online help system for FCP and search for "D1"
However, your question remains unanswerable because we don't know how you're getting to the monitor. What are you playing back you AE sequences on that displays them on your LCD? You're assuming we know what you're doing and, I assure you, we do not.

  • How to select slides for exporting as QuickTime movie?

Is there a way to select only a range of slides for exporting as a QuickTime movie? I can hide the slides I don't want the movie to contain, then show them after the export, but this is very tedious. Is there a function like the "print range" when printing that will let me do this easier?
(My presentation is 100+ slides, all with animations, which I want to export as a series of short movies of 3-6 slides each.)

Probably easiest to open a new Keynote and drag the thumbnail of the slides you want in the Quicktime to the new presentation.
