Trimming midi regions, help needed.

Hi all,
haven't posted too much, but since I'm starting to work seriously with Logic I'd apreciate some help.
Yesterday I was recording some Midi tracks. I thought that the trim tool (adjusting regions borders) would actually silence the part "supressed". That happens when I trim from the right, but not when I trim from the left. Even if there is no region information, music plays anyway.
Anyone knows why this happens? I've been unable to find this on the manual...
Thanks a lot,
Al.
Logic 7.2.3 - Mac Pro 2.66 - 2 Ghz RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Trimming from the left simply doesn't work.
When I want to mute notes but not erase them, I select the notes (usually in the score or matrix editors, but you can also do it in the event editor) and I use my MUTE key command. I'm sure that the mute tool will do the same function, though I've never used it for that purpose.
If you simply want to separate a note out of the region (like one that's a 16th before the downbeat) and keep it around for some reason, my suggestion is to create a new track, duplicate the region, open the event editor on this region and delete everything except for the note you want to keep. This is easily done by doing a CMD-A and then shift-clicking on the one note to exclude it from the rest of the events, then hitting delete.
In the other region, delete that leading 16th note.
It might seem like a lot of trouble to do a simple thing, but since you can't trim the left edge of a region towards the right, aside from muting individual notes within the region as described above, it's one of the few workarounds available.
I couldn't tell you whether or not the info in the training books is correct or not, but I can say for sure that moving the left edge towards the right does not work.

    Hi Charlotte,
You don't say what your version of Windows you have. Assuming XP, go to Start | Run, type DXDIAG and click OK. Click the Sound tab and run the tests to eliminate a hardware problem first of all. If you don't hear anything, check your cables first of all. Also make sure "Mute" isn't checkmarked in your sound setup. You'll find that in Windows Control Panel.
Which browser do you use? If you have Firefox 4, sign up to the HTML5 trial @ http://www.youtube.com/html5
HTML5 is the latest video standard and doesn't require Flash player. Google is in the process of converting all its files to work with the new format. It may solve you problem. If you don't have Firefox 4, you can get it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/
    IE8 doesn't support HTML5.
To clean out your temp files, go to Start | Run, type: CLEANMGR and click OK. Click OK again to start the utility. Tick all the boxes except "Compress old files" because the latter takes too long, and then click OK. You can run this utility any time you wish by the way.
The above steps will hopefully fix your problem. If not, post here again please.

  • Automation Problem - Desperate Help Needed

    Hi
Was wondering if anyone can help or has had the sameproblem?
I have nearly finished a remix project in Logic and I amcoming to the final stages of automating effects etc.
All of a sudden, my automation is not recording on certain tracks.
I am simply trying to automate the cut-off on the Filterplug-in, but have subsequently realised that it is also happening with volume and any other type of automation.
I thought it might be something to do with the massive synth– but the same is happening with the EXS and ES2 etc.
I have done a lot of testing and opened up a new project andcopied over the settings and midi-regions and automation records absolutely fine!
I even tried to get round it by sending the output to a bus and effecting the bus then trying to automate the bus once adding to the arrange! No Joy!  Still failed?!
It seems that it is a bug within my project?!
A black line appears and even if I try and manually drawautomation the line just disappears.
It is definitely not what I am doing, as I have replicated the process in a fresh project and it works fine.
Are you only allowed so many channels of automation?
Funnily, during my testing when I try and delete the trackto start a fresh – it says – 'Do you want to delete automation'! but there isclearly none on display and I am not hearing any!
It feels like a bug – but wondered if anyone else had any issues?
It is only affecting certain tracks, but I cannot see a correlation between them?!
I am about to start replicating everything in a new project! Huge job – but I need to automate forthe final mix and its due by Friday – I am really frustrated by this!
    Can Apple help me?
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Steve,
I haven't seen this behavior before, but it sounds like a corrupted file. It doesn't happen often, but it does, and can happen.
If you are not having similar problems in a new template, than moving everything over to a new session would be advised, at this point.
Logic 9's new track import feature will make this A LOT easier than it ever was.
Read up on how this is done, but you should be able to copy EVERYTHING over to a new session in one swoop

  • MIDI region - how do I stop it going blank when I hit record!?!?

    Hi
In Logic 7.2 how can I set it so that when i'm in MIDI region edit view (where i can see the midi notes i've played in) - hitting the record button DOESN'T change the view to a new BLANK region. This is really annoying!!
I might have a beat i've programmed in, and I perhaps want to add in a missed hi-hat sound - and it really helps to SEE the point at which i need to play it!
    Thx

To be honest, I would rather that Logic doesn't do this. I'd rather keep each take as a separate object and keep merging under my control. I usually create a new track for the same instrument and record new info there. From there, I comp my changes (or I may leave it alone if it's MIDI data and I'm not going to print a score).

  • How do i connect 2 soft synths to 1 midi region?

I have a bassline made from Massive and Scrabee Bass , i want them to booth run of one midi region like a rack in Ableton . I have them booth running together by going to "Environment - Mixer" and link the channel at the top of the strip . the problem is now as i alter the volume on one instrument booth are adjusted . So--
How do i get booth instruments working form one midi region but allowing me to alter volume pan ect seperately , thanks.

Actually it's very easy to do in the Environment.
    1. Create an extra track in the Arrange area. Doesn't matter the type of track as we'll reassign it to something else later.
    2. In the Environment's Mixer layer choose: New > Instrument
    3. Assign the Instrument object (you can rename it if you wish) to the empty track in the Arrange. Loads of ways to do this. My fave is to drag the object from the Environment onto the Track Header in the Arrange area.
    4. Drag one output cable from the Instrument object to one SI channel strip in the Environment. Drag a second output cable from the Inst object to the other SI channel strip.
    5. In the Arrange area move the MIDI region onto the Instrument's track. Done.
You can now independently control the volume, pan, etc on each of the channel strips.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I avoid this unwanted MIDI Region?

This happens at odd moments, but most recently with the Step Input Keyboard, in the Score Editor.
I added a note to a staff and the following occurred:
--A new treble and bass clef appeared in the staff with a line connecting the two staves (bass and treble).
--In the Arrange window, a new region appeared, labelled "midi region", right next to, but separate from, the existing region.
I have to delete this from the Arrange window and try again; usually the second time it's normal.
Can someone tell me why this happens, and how I can prevent it?

No - this limit is meant to guard the client from malicious servers. It is possible to send valid OData feed which will consume lot of memory to parse. This can be done on the XML level or on the OData level. This limit guards against both.
Servers have other ways to limit amount of data returned to the client, the reason there is to guard against expensive query execution
In general a good way to look at OData is to think about it as the "minimum necessary protocol" to do what is needed. We try to keep it that way anyway. It's also stateless (REST...). So the more coupling between client and server, the worse... so to say.
I can imagine having an HTTP header for this purpose, but I don't think that lot of clients would be interested in it.
I think you should approach this limit from the security point of view (that's what it's for). Set it to the maximum amount of memory you're willing to give up to process the response. At least roughly (the memory consumption should be linear to the size
of the input, cases where it's not are guarded by the other options on the MessageQuotas).

  • Is it possible to automate software instrument parameters in a MIDI region? And alias the region with the automation?

I am trying to track down a detail about how automation works in Logic Pro X.
What I want to know is:
    1. Can I draw control-point curves (and smoothly bend them) in a MIDI region to automate a software instrument parameter (and/or smart controls)?
    2. Can a region containing this automation be aliased and reused around the timeline (without the automation points being duplicated)?
If this is possible, can someone please post a couple of screenshots - a MIDI region with MIDI Draw automating (for example) the cutoff of an ES M, and screenshots of aliases around the timeline?
    thanks!!
    H

First, I'd recommend going to Track>other>new with same instrument.  This gives you a blank lane to make a region with no notes.
Now, there are two strategies: do some track automation and then convert it to region. You can go into the local view menu and find the option to view MIDI automation and still adjust it.  Now you can make aliases of that region. You need to be careful of accidentally writing new track automation, which is easy to do and can happen if you have 'move automation with regions' on for instance.  If you make sure and delete all the track auto for this parameter you should be good (the line should be barely visible black, if it is highlighted in color, that means there is at least one active node at the beginning).  If the parameter freaks out, instead of following your curve, you can bet there is track automation fighting with the region automation, you might need to tell the automation menu in the track header to show the parameter in question.  None of this is a big deal and after doing it once you'll see.
The other strategy is to assign a controller to a parameter (or use the quick MIDI things on certain instruments - you mentioned ES2, which has that) and you can use the hyper draw in the piano roll.  The view tip from the first strategy still works so you can edit the automation in the arrange.  I prefer the first strategy because the knob you are automating will still move.
If you go to audio tuts plus (something like that) you can find a tut on the first method that's a few years old, and from Logic 9.  Basically the same, you just have to look through different menus for everything.

  • MIDI regions won't play back in Logic X

Suddenly my MIDI regions won't play back. I can hear the notes when when I play on my MIDI controller and when I mark the MIDI notes in the piano roll, but not when play it back in the arrange window. This worked fine the last time I opened the project.
    - I have done a restart of all my equipment, computer and Logic.
    - Nothing is muted - not the track or the regions.
    - The MIDI in/out in the piano roll is ON.
    - The channel strip setting is set to ON.
    - This applies to all instruments.
    - It works as usual for MIDI written using the pen tool, but not for MIDI played on the keyboard.
    - MIDI channel are set to 1 (as seen in the event window).
    - Instrument channel is set to "all".

Does anyone know what could be wrong? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

See if this is the problem.
Is this an imported Logic 9 project file?
Check the track Inspector settings and see if you have any over the top values for some of the settings (like Delay)

  • Spacebar is entering midi regions instead of playing my track

    Hey guys
I'm having a really strang problem and I can't figure out what happend. Everytime I try to play my track using the spacebar it doesn't work. It just enters a new empty midi region. I've looked at the Keycommands and just can't figure out what to do.
I've rebooted my system and still nothing!!!
Anybody knows what might be the problem?
    Cheers

You "looked at" you keycommands? And?
Here's a tip: in the keycommand window, make sure the list is highlighted (as in the pic). Then click the "Key" column header, then hit the spacebar: the first command assigned to it will be selected. Hit spacebar again and the next command assigned to it will be selected, etc. I believe by default the spacebar is assigned to two commands: Play or stop and Play/Stop Selection. If it is indeed also assigned to creating a region, then simply delete that assignment.
If it is not, then simply restarting Logic or even restarting your Mac might help.

  • MIDI Regions turned shaded white - won't play back now.

Several of my MIDI regions in Logic became a shaded white color and don’t play. However, when clicking on a note in Logic’s piano roll, it plays!!!! Anyone help here?
Here’s what may have led up to it, earlier I was recording MIDI into Logic by playing my keyboard (a Motif ES). I had several tracks laid down - then I did something not too smart and pulled the USB cable out of my Motif ES while Logic was still running. I am fairly sure, but not convinced, that’s when they turned from the standard green to a white shaded color.
After reconnecting the USB cable, I’ve tried rebooting both the Motif and Mac but still not working. Also copied the MIDI regions to a new song - they are still whited out.
    Any suggestions here?
(I am using a MOTIF ES keyboard and Logic Pro 8.0.2)

That sounds like the regions got muted. Right-click the region and select Mute/Unmute. In my default keycommand setup it's the same as pressing the 'M' key.

  • Manipulating Overlapping MIDI Regions

Hi - I've been playing with Logic 9 and am trying to figure out how overlapping MIDI regions are handled/managed.
I started by recording a 2 bar kick pattern. Next, I wanted to "overdub" (i.e. record onto the same track without losing the kick) a snare part and a hi-hat part. I set up Cycle record for the two bar region and set my recording prefs to "merge only in cycle record".
When I record the snare part it appears to create a new region that sits "over" the kick part. i.e. if I select the snare region and delete it the kick region is revealed. Same thing happens when I record another part (hi-hat). Also, in the Arrange and Piano Roll windows, the region only displays the notes of the last recorded part.
    Couple of questions:
    1) how do I manage all three of the regions as one? i.e. if I want to edit the MIDI notes of the kick drum in the Piano Roll window I can't. It only shows me the last part that I recorded.
    2) I discovered the Merge command but is there a way to have parts automatically merged with the first part that was recorded?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
This one is a bit 'peculiar':
Assuming that you have recorded a part, stopped and subsequently you wish to record/overdub in cycle mode, you need to set the Recording Settings to 'Merge with Selected Region' to successfully merge as you cycle record.
Merge in Cycle will only merge passes recorded in that cycle, not pre-existing regions.

    Hey preachit,
It sounds like we are running into issues with the iTunes software connecting to your device. If possible, lets try plugging your iPhone 5 in with a different cable. Also, try plugging it in to a different USB port on your computer:

  • Create an empty midi region

    Hey, from the manual:
Π Tip: If you want to insert one chord per bar into a very busy part, it’s much faster to
create an empty MIDI region, and enter the desired chords into it (the cursor moves to
the next bar when you press Tab in empty regions). Following chord entry, you can
either merge the MIDI region with the original MIDI region in the Arrange area, or copy
and paste all chords at once.
I'm trying to create a few lead sheets that will display chord symbols, and ideally the melody as well. Sounds like it's easier to write in the chord symbols manually using the chord tool from the text box, but how do I create an empty midi region as stated above? The score editor will only open if there is information in a region somewhere. I could play one note I guess...but how's this empty thing work? Also, would you recommend using lead sheet from staff styles in the layout menu? Most jazz charts use a piano staff, melody up top, chord changes in the bottom. Perhaps I need to work backwards and set up the staff styles first, then record into them?

  • Record count help needed

I am trying to wirte a MySQL query where I can display the record number returned in a repeat region... eg:
    Record 1
    Record 2
    Record 3
    Record 4
    Record 5 etc...
I keep getting a stupid number or a '0' repeated  in place of the incrementing number.
    I have:
    SELECT COUNT(*) AS Count, fld_fID, fld_fTHREADID FROM tbl_forumPOSTS WHERE fld_fTHREADID = %s
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

Here's how I imnplemented it for those who require it:
Basically, to achieve an automated row count for the amount of records returned from a repeat region, one needs to take the original query and wrap it into a subquery with the rownum as the outside query... like so:
SELECT table1.* xxx, @rownum:=@rownum+1 AS rownum
              FROM
                        SELECT table1.*, `table2`.`field1` AS table2_field1, table3.* etc etc
                        FROM tbl_table1
                        JOIN table2 ON table2.field1 = table1.field1
      table1,
    (SELECT @rownum:=0) r
The SELECT bit between the first two brackets is my original query that I needed to get a count on of 1 to 10 or however records are returned.
On the outer query, you also need to make an alias of the table you're drawing records from otherwise you'll get an error saying the table doesn't exist:
    table1.* xxx
or for your clarity you could say:
    table1.* AS xxx
Now all is in place, within your bindings panel (if you still have it ), simply locate the rownum and insert it into your repeat region:
    <?php echo($row_recordsetname['rownum']); ?>
By wrapping the original query in brackets and making it a subquery, you stop the rownum returning strange results. So for 10 results, I was getting it start from 1 to 10, then the same results would start from 217 to 227, then 55 to 65 and so on... everything I did was not consistent or even accurate most of the time.
    Hope this helps.
