Triple Display issue Mac Pro 4.1, GTX660, GT120.

Hi guys.
I have a mac pro 4.1 with a GTX 660 and a stock GT 120.
The 660 has 2 x DVI, 1x HDMI, 1x Displayport
The GT 120 has 1x MiniDp 1x DVI.
I have both NVIDIA drivers and stock drivers.
I've recently received a Dell U3011 2560 x 1600 to compliment my 2 20 inch 1600 x 1200 monitors.
I plan to have the 20's flank the u3011 in portrait on either side to create a PLP setup.
The problem is that I can't get them all to work together.
Most of the time the monitor on the left isn't recognised (in system information it is described as color LCD display) and displays a resolution of 480 x 640. The other two monitors will work fine.
If I fiddle with the video outputs on 660 and 120 (mix them up, use adapters etc) I can get all three monitors to display their correct resolution, But if the computer sleeps or is restarted it goes back to low resolution on one monitor and doesn't display an image at all and goes to sleep.
The U3011 is always recognised at its correct resolution via displayport.
Other two are connected to DVI1 on the 660 and the DVI on GT120
Currently both 20's are recognised as 'vga display' or 'color LCD', no resolution options are available, just what it defaults to (640 x 480)
What it is at the moment:
What it was before I had the 30 and was using a 24:
I'm pretty sure its not a monitor issue, as the issues vary between monitors (depending on which is plugged in where)
I'd prefer to resolve this issue by running everything off the 660, allowing me to remove the GT120.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

I'm pretty sure its not a monitor issue, as the issues vary between monitors
I'm pretty sure this is a display and adapter and interface problem, especially when the name(s) of your display(s)  show up wrong after sleep.
The Mac uses one display driver that is highly parameterized. The parameters to be used are set by sending a query to the display for its name and capabilities. This query is sent on the secondary digital data channel, and is sometimes referred to as EDID data.
Currently both 20's are recognised as 'vga display' or 'color LCD', no resolution options are available, just what it defaults to (640 x 480)
When the name of the display is not correctly reflected in the name of its Display Preferences pane, that is a direct indication the display-adapter-cable-display part of the chain "dropped the ball" in resounding to the Mac's query for capabilities.
Adapters that do not pass the EDID data through, and displays that do not answer when queried for their name and capabilities are the primary source of problems. For example, TV sets that are not "paying attention" to the secondary data channel, and therefore do not answer the query, drive Mac users crazy.
The query is sent in response to four different events:
• System Startup
• wake form sleep
• cable insertion at the Mac-end (not necessarily at the Display-end)
• The use of the Option-Detect_Displays button in Displays Preferences window

  • Display issues, Mac Pro

Just got my Mac Pro, and it has a pretty frustrating problem. When waking up from sleep the display (ACD 20") stays black and there's no way of getting a signal without rebooting. If that wasn't annoying enough, the same thing happens about 7-8 times out of 10 when I reboot. The computer boots just fine, but the display stays off. I've tried with other displays and get the same problem.
This is a list of the things I've tried so far:
    1. Called Apple Support, who wanted me to send it for a repair which seems kinda sad seeing as I've only had it for a few days. No replacement will be given though. Unfortunately Apple in Europe aren't as generous with the 14-day DOA period as they are in the US.
    2. Reset PMU/PRAM/NVRAM (sometimes brings the display back up, sometimes not).
    3. Removed and reinserted graphics card.
    4. Removed and reinserted memory sticks.
    5. Tried a new set of memory sticks.
    6. Reinstalled OS X, which is the first thing I do whenever I get a new Mac anyway.
    7. Tried different monitors with both ports on the graphics card.
    8. Ran Apple Hardware Test without any errors registering.
Anyone have any suggestions of anything else I should try, or should I give up on this one and get it fixed?
    Thanks

If the display has a DVI connector it will plug into the Mac Pro directly.  If it uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)

you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display

  • New cinema display on Mac Pro monitor keeps turning off/going dark. Support told me a keyboard shortcut (something like option R L)... I'd appreciate it if anyone knows it. I had this problem when i 1st bought it 2 months ago.

My new cinema display fro mac pro just went dark. When I 1st bought it, the display wouldn't turn on.I called support and they gave me a keyboard shortcut - something like Option+R+L - that you held down for 2 restart cycles. Then it magically turned on. I can't remember the sequence and I'm afraid to guess! I'd appreciate if anyone knows the trick. I'm also wondering if I should bring this display back...

Cassandra from Apple Support ROCKS!!!! She's a supervisor somewhere and should have a raise. Pleasant, smart and professional with a customer who wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer.
If your cinema display goes dark:
    1. shut down computer
    2. restart
    3. immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously for a few minutes (seems forever)
    4. keep holding keys for 2 startup cycles
    5. release and go back to work if you're lucky to have a restored screen

  • Display issues between Pro and reader

    Greetings,
My colleague and I are having issues getting a form we created to display as designed in reader.
The editable pdf displays as designed in Pro. When we open it up in reader and begin to type in a field, the text displays in an extremely small size. Once you click off the field, it will enlarge the font to the desired size. We are obviously overlooking something but I'm not certain what that is.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • 2*17" Studio Displays and Mac Pro -

    Hi,
I have two 17" Studio Displays and want to buy a Mac Pro. can anyone fill me in on what connectivity issues there are with this setup.
(I am sure this question has been answered - if so please post a link to the thread - I don't know enough to be able to sort through the answers when I searched)
    Thanks very much
    Aaron

If they are 17" LCDs with the ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
then each will need a DVI to ADC adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8661LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTgyNDg>
If they are 17" CRT with VGA connectors
    <http://www.jestineyong.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/vga.jpg>
they will need DVI to VGA adapters.
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTI1NzQ>
One is included with the Mac Pro.
If they are 17" CRTs with the ADC, you cannot use them with a Mac Pro (or any computer without built-in ADC ports).

  • Sharp 4K Display 60Hz Mac Pro Bugs

    2x Sharp PN-K321 4K Display
When the display is put in MST mode (multi-stream transfer) it does not allow for rotation to portrait mode (270*).  As far as I know the drivers allow for this and this issue is merely with resolution preset within OSX.
Please resolve this ASAP as the vertical real-estate afforded to me by portrait mode is useless (in my situation) at 30Hz and it's a bit disappointing that these displays are still having such issues when they're touted by Apple as being fully TB2 compatible (especially considering that TB MST has been around for a while).
Also given that you pushed major updates in multi-display support with 10.9.3 it's a bit ridiculous that such a basic issue would be unresolved, even on top-line flagship hardware.
If you need any help interfacing with the firmware please let me know as I am happy to assist, but seriously, you need to find a resolution to this.

  • Retina display on Mac Pro goes off randomly while working

My client has the latest Mac Pro (cylinder) with two screens, one of which is the latest Apple Retina display.
In my client's own words, here's the problem:
"My monitors have been really buggy. The retina display just cuts out - then randomly comes back on.
I have verified that all cords and plugs are secure and that the power source is on... it's been doing this since the beginning but is worse now.
Sometimes one stays on and the other goes off -- sometimes it switches.  When I reboot the same thing happens.
I ran disk utility permissions and repair just in case and all seems to be in order."
    Mac Pro (64G RAM)
I searched online but haven't found any info on this problem
    Any ideas?

    Howdy generatech,
To help resolve or troubleshoot the issue with these monitors intermitently turning off on their own, I would use this part of the following article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • Graphic issues mac pro

    Distorted imaged on HDTV

I'm not sure if this is related or not.  A client of mine is using a MacPro (Late 2013 - 32GB RAM - 6 Core) with a Samsung 4K display.  The problem began recently in Mail, he get's the spinning beach ball constantly, making Mail useless.  Only Mail is affected and I have gone thru all the Mail fixes (rebuilding, reindexing, recreating account, creating new user account, etc...) to no avail.  If I log in with TeamViewer, the problem instantly corrects and no issues as long as I stay connected. Once I log out, spinning beach ball.  No processes in Activity Monitor or TOP indicate anything running amok.  Since the problem seems to go away with TeamViewer (not VNC or ARD though) I assumed it might be display related.  After some experimentation, changing the display resolution to another setting and back again fixes it for a bit.  I assume it's a problem with the graphics adapter working with the 4K display but am wondering if others have seen this or know of a possible fix?  I've seen posts about the Mac Pro's 4K problems with certain displays but not this specific issue.

  • Want to run two 30" cinema displays from Mac Pro

I'm running Avid Media Composer software to edit a film that I made, and I would like to run (if possible) two Apple 30" cinema displays next to each other off of my Mac Pro (the computer was purchased at end of 2009). While editing with Avid software, I like to spread out my work and bins in able to see everything, and strange as it may sound, I'd like more room than one 30" display can provide. Currently, I have one Apple 30" Cinema display in use, and could purchase another large display if I can find out-- definitively, if my Mac Pro computer will be able to handle it and power it effectively. I realize that Apple doesn't sell the 30" displays anymore, but I saw a few relatively inexpensive ones available on Craigslist recently.
The second monitor that I'm using now is a much older (non-Mac) monitor (and smaller) and the resolutions don't match the high resolution of my single Apple 30" display. So, my reason for wanting a second, larger display are twofold... 1) to see more of my work, and 2) to get the highest resolutions to match (2560x).
The ports on the back of the Mac Pro don't look like they will support the use of a second 30" display, just one. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Do I need to purchase another video card to run a second 30" Apple display? If so, which ones are best/do you suggest?
Do I need to upgrade my processing speed (get a faster processor) to run two large, high-rez monitors?
    specs:
    Mac Pro
    10.6.6
    Processor: 2 x 2.8 GHz
    Memory: 2 GB
    800 MHz DDRZ FB-DIMM
    Quad-Core Intel Xem
    Purchased end of 2009

If it has two DVI ports, just plug in the second display with an additional Dual-Link DVI cable -- the card can run both displays without issue.
If it has one DVI and one other type, Exactly which display card do you have installed?

  • Dual Display Problem - Mac Pro / 23" Apple Cinema

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a hard time right now. Here's my situation. I'm using my Mac Pro with a primary HD Apple Cinema Display 23". I just recently stumbled upon a Sony HS95P. I've used this monitor before as a second display a few years back. I bought a " DVI 24+1 male to VGA female adapter DVI-D DVI-I DVI-A " and plugged it into my computer, no problem. Display shows up in system preferences, when I check mirror displays it takes the resolution of the 2nd display and the Sony flashes. However no screen, Blacked on the Sony. When I set up the displays to run into eachother, I can venture my mouse over onto where the other monitor would be, however it's black on the Sony.
What could be the problem? I didn't buy the Apple adapter, but could this REALLY be that serious of an issue? I didn't use it in the past, atleast I don't think I did.. Also could it be the OS? I'm using 10.6.8. Any help or advice/things to try would be awesome...  I have two DVI slots in the back of my Mac Pro, gfx card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. Thanks guys.

I'm back. Got my Mac Pro back from repair today. Ahhh...25" screen. However, they (the Apple Repair People) have put a new GeForce 8800GT in, to replace the old one.
And the final bill was $380 CDN ($40 for work, the rest for the card, around $300.)
What's Apple's policy on graphics card replacement, even if the customer is paying for it? I thought I asked for a new ATI 5770 card, but maybe I was wrong. I don't think I can take her back in and ask 'em to put a better card in there, and only ask for a bit more to cover the difference in price. I've got a feeling it doesn't work like that.....
    thanks

  • 27" Thunderbolt Display on Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro (late 2010) with two 27" Apple Cinema Displays,  I would like to replace one of them with a new 27" Thunderbolt Display just because of the HD iSight camera.  Is it possible to connect it to my current Mac Pro?  I don't care about the Thunderbolt at all.

No.  Unfrotunately I was in the same boat with a late 2010 MacBook Air.  I went ahead and took the hit getting a 2011 MacBook Air and sold my previous one to a friend at a discount.
With a 2011 MacBook Pro (w/ Thunder bolt) you woudl be able to place the Thunderbolt display first in the chain and then the second cinema display on the end.  The thunderbolt display will have all the expansion ports (firewire, usb, etc. available).
Note -- you may have issues though using Bootcamp with thunderbolt as currently there is no way to use the iMac 27" thunderbolt as a target monitor even with the late model MacBooks which have thunderbolt.  I feel it's plausible they will address this with better thunderbold windows drivers however.
If you are interested on getting rid of one of your Cinema Displays I may take you on it just because of the Bootcamp issue which works fine with that one.  Let me know.

  • How to connect the 27" cinema display to Mac Pro?

Hallo, I want to connect my mac pro, early 2008, with force gtx 285 to a apple cinema display 27", which adapter do I need??? Sorry for my english, I'm from austria. Thanks for your help :-)

To drive the 27" to its full reolution you need a male dual link DVI to female mini-displayport adaptor.  Apple makes one but it is not cheap ($99).  Stick "dual link dvi to mini-displayport adaptor" into a google search and maybe you can find something cheaper.
