Trojan email

Ok.
This is new to me. I have been a mac user for quite a while. And have several if not many apple products and mac machines.
I just picked up a brand new Macbook pro yesterday and migrated all my stuff over from about a 1 year old macbook pro.
Now the problem lies in that recently (today) I have been getting a couple of notifications from protectmac that I have a potential threat mail.trojan.gzc on my machine.
I delete it within protectmac. It says it is removed. But when I try to delete it in the POP account it just goes grey and doesn't move to trash. Then when I close mail it comes back as brand new message. It isn't in the actual "mail" folder as a emzl or whatever file.
It isn't on the server, it isn't in the deleted folder or anything.
I have looked everywhere, have done multiple scans, and everything. But I can't seem to find it so I can delete it.
Also should I be worried if the email with "DHL Tracking number" as the subject line. and I didn't open it, just previewed it. And protectmac not being able to delete it.
How do I delete this? How do I protect my machine. This never happened with my old machine. Now just happened today.
Please help me delete this message. And NO i don't use or download pirated software or go to crazy websites.
Thanks in advance...

Not sure what you mean by opening it and rebuilding it?
I suppose this was a reply to my post, but I'm not sure.

Did you or did you not delete it with protectmac? If you did delete the email using something other than mail, the display in Mail might not update because it is using indexes to display the messages in the Message viewer. If you deleted it already, and then try to delete it with Mail, it doesn't have anything real to delete.
You can rebuild the mailbox indexes by selecting the mailbox that the message is in, then, in the mailbox menu, select rebuild. If the message was deleted, then it should disappear from the message list.
As for having something bad on your Mac, it can't cause you any problems. If you send the email message that contains the trojan to a Windows user, it may affect them.

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse.  It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book.  I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month.  It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone.  Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word.  The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer.  It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have.  The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up.  If it pulls up at all.  I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean.  I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks.  I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either.  I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me.  I do remember when I believe my computer became infected:  I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected.  I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late.  I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all.  I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer.  It refuses to uninstall.  The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible.  If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,

  • I have received an email from a friend with a link which I clicked. It directed me to the google home page and I am now suspicious that it is a virus  or a Trojan horse. I would know what to do on my PC but am new to Ipad. How can I check?

I have received an email from a friend with a link which I clicked. It took me to the google home page. I am now suspicious that my friend's email account has been hijacked and the link contained a virus or a Trojan horse. I would know what to do on my PC but am new to the IPad. Can any form of Trojan horse be planted on IOS 6 or am I worrying unnecessarily? Reassurance would be most welcome as I do use the IPad for checking bank details and web purchases. Thanks for any help.

PC virus won't run on iPad.

  • I downloaded what I think is a Trojan to my ipad2 from the ios email client. It was this scam: We attempted to deliver your item. and then you download a link. How can I check for it?

I got a package delivery notice from my email and stupidly clicked the link. It locked my screen for a minute and all seems to be fine, but I see it's a password trojan. How can I find and get rid of it if its there.

Due to the same security features that mean there's no malware capable of infecting an iPad that hasn't been jailbroken, there's also no real anti-virus software for the iPad. The security of iOS (specifically, the sandboxing feature) would not allow an anti-virus app to scan your iPad. There are a few anti-virus apps, but they can only scan things external to your iPad, such as your e-mail or Dropbox accounts.
So, in short, yes, you're just panicking.

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • New Cridex Banking Trojan variant Combines Data Stealer and Email Worm

    Hi Team,
In an effort to infect large number of people, cybercriminals have developed a new malicious software program that contains functionality to spread itself quickly.
Geodo, a new version of the infamous
Cridex (also known as Feodo or Bugat) banking information stealing Trojan works in conjunction with a worm that sends out emails automatically to continue its self-spreading infection method, effectively turning each infected
Windows system in the botnet for infecting new targets, Seculert warned.

There are many ways which FEP protects you against different kind of malwares, for example using heuristic detection and behavior monitoring , it is possible to detect even unknown malwares. The issue with new malware and cybercriminals is an on-going issue
and for this reason you have regular updates.
If you have sample of this threat, you may submit it to Microsoft Malware Protection Center:

  • Email phishing, malware, trojan horses, key stroke

I have a iMac with the new Yosemite 10.10.1 SW installed. I received an email and clicked on a web link that was characterised as Phishing and I enterred private information. I have since truned off all online contacts that may be compromised. What is the likelyhood that when I went to this scam website and enterred information that Malware, Trojan Horse, Key stroke counting type SW was installed?  Would the new Yosemite OS prevented this from happening?

Those sites are mostly designed for Windows PCs, so OS X should not be affected. Furthermore, OS X Yosemite uses Gatekeeper, which only allows to install apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers by default.
If you want to be sure there is nothing bad in your Mac, you can use ClamXav and scan the hard disk.

  • Anyone recieved emails infected with trojan which wouldn't delete?

I received two emails, both with similar headings: "Love letter from your Girlfriend" or something like that and both with attachments. As soon as I tried deleting them Trend Smart Surfing came up saying it had found numerous issues and couldn't quarantine them. Trend listed a couple different Trojans. I continued attempting to delete the emails however every time I did a pop up message from iMail says can't move email failure to connect with something. Now Trend is coming up saying that the Trojan is in my Time Capsule and I'm starting to get a little concerned!!
Has enyone had a similar experience or know of how I can get rid of this bloody thing?
I guess I should mention I have the Trend Smart Surfing (as mentioned above) and also MacKeeper for security. Strangely, MacKeeper's scans are coming up clean!
If anyone could offer some advise I would be very, very grateful!

    Hello:
Opinion is sometimes worth what you pay for it and mine is free
FWIW, here is my view after reading both of your posts.
Nothing has "infected" your Mac unless that A/V package you installed did something "under the covers" that neither of us is aware of.  I have never heard of an E-mail that was not opened ever causing a problem.
I did a little research on the file suffixes you posted:
.AW is a Microsoft suffix (figures).  No Apple could open it, ever - anymore than an Apple could open the dreaded .exe Microsoft files.
    http://www.filesuffix.com/extension/aw.html
I couuld find nothing at all about an "EKD" suffix....there was something about an "EKG" suffix.
Upon trying to delete them a message from iMail came up saying it couldn't connect to server or something and couldn't move the emails.
Is "iMail" referring to Apple's Mail application?  If so, that probably relates to something that was done in the overall activities you describe - what, I do not know.
"My concern now is obviously what they may have done, infected etc. and also why I keep getting these scan logs saying I've got Trojans when apparently there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none."
IMHO, the messages and whatever they found are bogus and useless.  The A/V program is scanning (and apparently) found something that certainly does not affect a Mac running OS X (the last part of your statement is my original observation and is quite true).
In summary (again IMHO) you have no problem.  If I were you (and I am not) I would uninstall the A/V software.  If you are really worried, reinstall OS X (you should, of course, have a good backup first).

  • Trojan / Virus accessing email contacts

    Looking for some help please.
For the past two days emails are being sent from my hotmail account, though I haven't sent them.  The emails are really random and are being sent to all my contacts in my address book and am thinking is it possible a Trojan/Virus may have attached itself to my contacts.  I have changed my hotmail password without success.  Is there any anti-software which can be used to check if I have a Trojan/Virus? Should I take it to an apple store?
    Thank you

There is no malware capable of infecting any iOS device (iPad, iPhone, etc), so this is definitely not malware. What has undoubtedly happened is that your e-mail account has been hacked. See the information here:
Someone is sending messages from my e-mail address!
(Note that this page was written for Mac users, so information that page contains regarding malware is not applicable to your iOS device.)

  • I received an email to update Firefox and when trying to upload my McAfee security said it was a trojan and stopped upload

I received an email saying to use the link to update Firefox, on doing this my McAfee security said it was a trojan and stopped the upload. I deleted the email but I have just received another on. Is ther an email address I can send it to so you can check it out.

Mozilla doesn't send email about updating Firefox from a link in the email. Someone is trying to induce you to install Malware or a virus on your PC under the guise of a Firefox update.

  • 'Whats App web' email virus trojan sends to all Gmail address book

My wife received an email on her iPhone 5, which is set up to work with her Gmail Account from a friend. It appeared to be a message from Whats App (it wasn't) and said 'You Have New Messages' and had a clickable '>Play' link.
This then directed to a sales website but more annoyingly ran some kind of program via Mail on the iPhone and accessed all her Gmail contacts and sent itself to them (over 600) with random subject headers.
As soon as I found out I changed the password on Gmail and it seems to be OK, although Gmail bounced one of MY Gmail emails sent last night due to it coming from an IP Address associated with Spam!
Very annoyed and wonder how a simple click link can do so much - is the Gmail contact list accessable withourt the user's password?
Also I thought the iPhone ecosystem was pretty closed off to this kind of thing...

Hi.  I had this too and I clicked on my iPhone before I had thought it through.  Easy mistake.  My query is that my gmail account through which I got the phishing request has a 2-step security process requiring me to enter a 6 digit code before I can get into my own gmails. Different each time and I know, a bit of a pain.  However, I'm thinking that this additional security bind might actually have saved me?  Am I right?  I'll change my password anyway but I'm wondering if this 2-step security thing with Gmail is a good thing after all.  Please could somebody advise..

  • Need to revert to my old OS on iPad. Cannot. Tried using old backup but this Trojan horse type software has corrupted my ability to do so. Tried emailing but it bounced back unacknowledged. I was sent notice that I can't get support. Christmas 2012 gift.

New OS causing major problems. Forced to purge data and wipe iPad. Now my computer has changed. My software has changed on iPad. Tried using old backup from earlier date but Trojan horse software created by Apple has decided to stay.
Have 16gig. IPad 2 bought December 2012 for Christmas but according to Apple I am out of Apple care and would need to pay for support. When has 1 year apple care become 9 months?
Wasted an entire day trying to purge my older computer which is linked to this iPad. I reset my iPod and ended up deleting and wiping clean but it's not factory but the aggressive 7.2 which returned. I want my old OS back. Their software has destroyed my ability to use my iPad for the purposes I intended it for.
I don't do social media other than Pinterest and I want the fluffy stuff gone. They need to forget trying to get me into the clouds and fix this iPad so I can use it for real world applications.
You can only keep resetting so often. There has been hardware issues almost since purchase because it crashed several times even before updated fiasco.
    Help please.

Ralph9430, thanks for responding but the fact that they don't support AppleCare on a unit less than a year old despite being an older version is wrong.
It suppose to be from date of purchase so their not taking responsibility for the maiming of people's computers and their subsequent arrogance in not removing it is going to their undoing.
We have purchased iPhones, Mac Pro, iPad, iPod touches in the nano, shuffle and touch versions in the past as well as the more solid 80gig version. I
I am still using 3G model phone and I can no longer find apps to use with it because Apple feels I don't deserve new apps.
My children are using iPhone 4 and my daughter was seeking to upgrade to the newest model when it becomes available. They are social, I am not and I deserve the software I paid for. It should always be an option.
I can tell you that this particular oversight is causing me to look elsewhere for future purchases and  I will not be recommending Apple to others as I have in the past.

  • Got the Trojan.Zbot before the antivirus kicked in. All previous emails show that they are there but can't see the contents. Can they be restored?

All old emails are showing that they are there but there are no contents when you try to open them.

right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button. A new index will be generated which may fix the issue or make the empty mails disappear because they are no longer available to be indexed.
BTW look in your anti virus program for quarantined files with names like inbox

  • Email disabled, bot or trojan infection

My ISP disabled all my email accounts this morning because at least one of my Macs has been infected with a program that's blasting spam email.
They say they don't know anything about Macs and that I have to clean my systems before they let me back on the network.
There are 5 Macs, 5 iPads, and 3 iPhones involved, running OS 10.7.5, 10.8.3, and iOS6.
    Where do I start?

Additionally, I would contact them and - aside from telling them what Kurt said - I would tell them that they need to check their server filters and settings as they are letting through questionable email addresses. If you have any of the emails supposedly sent from your account in your sent box or the spammers sent you any spam, please choose full headers in the email and copy the entire thing - somewhere in there it'll show the "real" place it came from, most likely .ru (Russia), or Central/South America. Offer to send them a copy of that header or, if you don't have one, ask them to check the full header on one of the emails before they accuse you of such nonsense.
