Trojan threat detected when installing Rescue & Recovery

I am performing a fresh install of Win7 on a T61p.  I downloaded the 'Thinkpad Rescue and Recovery' installer (tvtvrnr43_1027fi.exe) from Lenovo's download site and ran it to began installing it.  After some unpacking and working through the setup wizard a bit AVG detected the following as a threat:
File:   C:\preboot\utils\rnrdbgtool.exe
Threat: Trojan horse Agent_r.BKV
Since I know this package came direct from Lenovo and since R&R is likely doing things that LOOK like a trojan, I have to believe AVG is throwing a false positive here.  But before I proceed I wanted to ask anyone else if they have encountered this before? Is it possible that the R&R installer is actually infected with a virus??
Thanks,
Rob

Thanks,

The answer to this is No...   not even your AVG suspects that. A trojan is much different then a Virus. An example of a trojan would be a computer program that claims to do one thing, but really does something different. A virus is a generic definition of a type of malware that infects and reproduces and spreads.
Any program that can make major changes to a computer could easily be detected as a false positive by anti-virus software, and AVG is one of the worse when it comes to false detections.
My advice is to look it up on AVG's database and see what it is they claim to have found. Odds are it's a generic classification or a heuristic definition, meaning their software is basically making a wild guess that it might not be what it claims to be.
If you're overly concerned about this you can update your AVG definitions each day until it's removed from the database. I'd also report it to AVG, they can't rule it out until someone reports it. Odds are it's been reported already, but it's best to check and do your part and improving a freeware product.
I doubt lenovo can do anything about it anyway. If the file was infected with a virus, that may be a different story, but most servers will detect a change in the file and anything infected will be removed very quickly. With a trojan definiton, it would be like trying to prove a negative. For example, if you say you're a doctor, but I say you're a plumber, you can easily prove you are a doctor, but you can't so easily prove you're NOT a plumber, and in this case AVG probably isn't even saying what type of program it thinks this really is, so that makes it infintiely harder to prove...      so the ball is in AVG's court, then need to fix it, or provide something specific for lenovo to contest or fix.

  • Error while trying to install Rescue & Recovery 4.3 on Lenovo 3000 N500

    Well, hello to everyone.
I hope you can understand this, because my English is not very good.
So, let's get to the point.
Recently, I tried to install Rescue & Recovery on my Lenovo 3000 N500. But when everything is nearing completion, I get the message that states: "Rescue & Recovery can only be installed on some systems."
Please explain me a bit this "in some systems," because I've had before the Rescue & Recovery. I do not understand why I can not install it now.
I appreciate your help in advance

    Hi,
the key point is that RnR application can be installed only on some systems (especially ThinkPads)
This is due to the fact, that these systems have some functions, like the F11 key, hardcoded in the machine and can thus use the full quality of this application.
Unfortunately system like yours is not supported by this application, so you will not be able to install, nor use it.
    Cheers

  • Error when installing Rescue and Recovery

    Hello,
    I own a 2 year old Thinkpad L430 running Win7 Pro 64bit.
I've been trying to install Rescue and Recovery because I want to reset my PC from the recovery partition, and as far as I understand the only way to do that is through RnR(?)
But whenever I go through the installer i get this error message:
    click me
which, in english, basically says that there was and error with the return code 6.
After googling around for a while i found out that the fact that I once had a Linux Distrinution installed alongside Windows may be the cause of aforementioned error, because Linux replaces the default Lenovo boot loader with it's own GRUB one. When i removed the Linux distribution I typed the following into the command line: bootrec.exe /fixmbr to return to the Windows boot loader.
Do anyone know if the Linux thing is in fact the cause of  the error?
Can I somehow restore the Lenovo boot loader or is there's some other way to install RnR and/or restore my PC?
    Any help is truly appreciated!
    thanks,
    Simon

A typical factory ship of machine from Lenovo: (yours may not look like this).
    Q (lenovo recovery)
contains Rescue and recovery standalone software.  This standalone software also  can call The factory recovery software, if the Factory software is still on the Q drive.   Lenovo modifies the BIOS to support launch of standalone RNR.
Regardless of RNR installed or not, on the windows platform, standalone SHOULD launch. There is always a standalone RNR  in the recovery partition.
    ==
    workaround:
    (1) order REcovery DVD from the support center. $50 us if not under warranty
    (2) find a bud with a Lenovo machine. Create Rescue media to a DVD.  Boot your machine with the DVD. If it finds the recovery partition intact, you can do a Factory reinstall. Rescue media is a standalone RNR, it will not rely on the boot structure on your C drive HDD>
    (3) Your main issue is RNR install died with RC=6. This shows up. Check the msi logs in
C/users/YOURID/appdata/local/temp. I have researched some of these.  It is confusion in the installer/ and the condition of the PDA/predesktop area (corrupted) . PDA is standalone rnr. Your PDA is probably just fine.
SO, which version of RNR did you try to install? Was it the USA english version or the NLS support version.
    Your cant mix and match.
You cant switch from the English only version to NLS. denmark version, it will rc=6. I personally think this is a bug..
Region lang, local lang etc also confuse RNR installer.
The rc=6 occurs way after the installer had a bug in it. Yes it is trying to modify the MBR/BCD. I dont think your linux stuff mucked it up.
    ==
    Simple solution:
Get a DVD of standalone RNR to perform the factory recovery.
-or- hit pff11 at boot time, and use RNR standalone for Factory recover<<< this shoud work. << my choice.

  • Unable to install Rescue & Recovery on X201 Think Pad

I have just bought a pre-owned Think Pad X201-3680-FZ2 laptop with Windows 7 professional, and for my own peace of mind wanted to restore it to factory settings before I start using it.
There are no recovery disks so I have downloaded the Rescue & Recovery 4.52 Setup but when I run the programme it gets to a certain point and then I receive the error message Error 25014. There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager.  Return code: 6
I have searched for a solution to this problem online, and see that I am not alone, but the responses I find either do not seem to apply to me as the other programmes mentioned are not installed, or I do not understand them.
I am not a computer expert, just a domestic / home office user, so need a solution in very easy to understand terms.  The Think Pad I have came with no instruction manuals, and as far as I can see, all the programmes installed relate to the operation of the Think Pad itself.  There does not seem to be Rescue & Recovery already installed on the ThinkPad.
Does anyone have a solution to this which they could explain to me in simple terms, please?

    What are the partitions labels?
According to the information you've provided:
    1. you have fresh installed OS in OEM reduction, it's activated from the BIOS, it's not a Lenovo preloaded image
    2. two recovery partitions (recovery workspace and partition for the stored image) were removed during the new OS installation.
Also, needed bootloader was removed so you are facing error regarding R&R installation. Perhaps OS was installed w/o complete drive cleaning.
Are there any archives on the drive? Try to find files with .wim extension (like sdrivebackup.wim and cdrivebackup.wim). It's the only chance previous owner saved preloaded image.
Nevertheless, don't worry, no problem to perform fresh installation

  • Problem re-installing Rescue & Recovery

I run X200S Windows 7 and uninstalled Rescue & Recovery some time ago believing it was causing some problems (not sure if it did). Now I want to restore the laptop to factory settings and need to re-install R&R. I have downloaded tvtvrnr431_007en.exe but keep getting error message cannot find correct .tvt file for installation. I have tried to put the exe file in different directories where I find .tvt files, but to no avail. I have also run a registry scan. A week-end's work so far, can anybody help, where should the exe file be installed and what other files need to be in the same direcorty. Your help would be much appreciated.
    Elling

Well, now I know, thanks. All this is because the machine has become slow and unstable. I have tried various magic tools that are supposed to spruce it up (AVG and Uniblue) but I experience nothing but frustration. Do you have any suggestions short of restoring the drive? Maybe uninstall all programs from control panel and install fresh ones? I am using a spare X61s running XP at the moment, feels like Formula 1.
    Ideasmiths wrote:
No, it doesnt work this way. A fresh lenovo comes with an S:  C: and Q: drive.  The Q drive is where all the factory recovery stuff are located. The blue button and RnR check the S: Drive and launch the Q drive. So if you do not have the S and Q drive, there is nothing much you can do.
All new lenovo users should burn their recovery discs when they get their computer. And before they delete the Q drive, another warning will come up giving notice for burning the recovery discs. If neither of these actions are done, then there is no recovery. There is nothing RnR can do as you have discovered, it just can't find the Q drive.
Since your data are safe. As mentioned, the options you have are to request for a set of recovery discs from lenovo or download a genuine window 7, install and use the win7 keys at the back of the laptop (underneath the battery).
    For advanced users
If you want to try something, check if the S drive is there (it's hidden), then find a partition recovery tool and try to recover the Q drive. It's located after the C drive and quite deep into the harddisk, maybe it was delete but the track has not been overwritten or tainted.

  • Installing Rescue & Recovery on a dual-boot T60

Should I be surprised that the installation of Rescue and Recovery 4.5 fails on a dual-boot T60?  It has had a recent upgrade from WinXP to Win 7 32-bit and I have since deleted the old SERVICEV0001 partition.  Linux Mint 11 is on another partition and grub is launched in the C: partition.  The error I get when the installer has unpacked the kit and starts to run the .msi is: "Error 25014.There was an error installing the Rescue and Recovery boot manager. Return code: 6."
I did have to do a repair job on grub as a result of deleting that service partition.  Unbeknown to me, grub had been previously running on there.
The BIOS version is 2.23 from Sept 2008.  I see that a v.2.34 is available.  Could this be what is throwing this installation?  Are there any known pitfalls with this BIOS update?
I do have a second hard-drive in the Ultrabay and I note that, since the OS upgrade, that drive is stealing the drive0 (sda) slot and forcing the boot drive to be drive1 (sdb).  This doesn't bother grub;  but does the R & R installer perhaps want the Ultrabay empty?

    Hi prudhvi,
No, dual boot will not be the key points here.
"WE COULD NOT UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION" This error poped up might be caused by the low space on your system reserved partition, you may take a look at the partition usage through Disk management.
Further, in addition to upgrade your Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, you may also consider to install Windows 10 on another clean partition, which will make your system triple-boot. Or consider to take use of Hyper-V.
    If you have spaces available.

  • [Athlon64] 'No disks detected' when installing WinXP64bit on striped SATA RAID

I've been using my RS480M2 board with a dual boot config (WinXP Pro 32bit and WinXP Pro 64bit) using a Maxtor Diamond Plus 80G SATA hard drive configured as an IDE/ATA. I set the controller as "IDE Controller" in the bios. Everything has been working just fine and I must say that I really do notice a big performance improvement on the WinXP64bit compared to the WinXP32bit.
I then purchased another Maxtor 80G SATA with the intention of setting up a SATA RAID 0 (striping) config to see if I will get more performance gain. So I changed the controller to "SATA Raid Controller" in the bios. Then I used the Sil3112A GUI (by pressing F4) to configure my 2 SATA hard drives as RAID 0. I tried installing WinXP Pro 64bit but the SATA RAID drivers I've tried just do not work. The Windows setup would indicate that there are no disks detected. I already tried the 32bit SATA RAID driver, the one at Silicon Image site, a few ones at PlanetAMD64, etc. No luck!!!
So I just installed WinXP Pro 32bit using the provided Sil3112 SATA RAID driver floppy diskette that came with my board. And it installed without any problems. All is well. So the problem is: WHERE THE HELL CAN I GET A SATA RAID DRIVER FOR WINXP64BIT???
To anyone who has the solution to my problem, kindly email the driver (or link) at [email protected]
    Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I finally got to install Windows XP Pro 64bit onto my RS480M2-IL configured as SATA RAID 0 (striping) with 2 80G DiamondPlus SATA hard drives. The sata drive that worked is the one on this link:

  • Need to Password Protect Rescue & Recovery 4.5 on my X220

I have purchased a X220 and have installed Rescue & Recovery 4.5. My OS is Windows 7 64bit. I am wanting to set a password on Rescue & Recovery so that when any user tries to open the software, from within Windows, they have to enter a password. Is this possible?

    That's not a feature of R&R.
But windows has a feature where you can restrict access to any application that you specify:  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/80605-applications-prevent-running-specified-programs.html
The way this would work, is that you log into the computer as "admin" then you can run any application that you want.  Your other users log into the computer as "user" and then they are only allowed the run the applications that you specify.

  • My W500 can not install Rescue and Recovery

    Hi guys,
Has anyone encountered the same problem as I did when I tried to install Rescue and Recovery?
The process always stopped with error code 6.
    I am using Win7 X64.
    W500 T9900 8GB + TBs imageries

I was also having the exact same problem on my W500, but I did not have to download the full multilingual package to get it to work.  First I reinstalled windows, and used the "clean all" command before the install.
At the first setup screen during the Windows 7 install hold Shift+F10 - this will bring up the command prompt.  Type in "diskpart" then type "list disk"  then type "select disk 0" This number may be different depending on how many drives your machine has in.  It will then tell you "disk 0 is now the selected disk"  After this type "clean all".  You will see just a flashing cursor in the command window to tell you it is running.  This will take some time, and   WARNING:it will fully erase -write zeroes- to the entire drive.  Your data will be unrecoverable, and ALL PARTITIONS will be deleted.  Once it's finised it will give you a message saying Diskpart succeded in cleaing the disk.  Now the important part, type in "select disk 0" once again, then type "create partition primary"  This will prevent Windows from automaticaly created the 100MB partition on the drive durring the install.  After that type 'exit' and 'exit' again, and you can continue the setup as normal.
Once Windows is up you need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008  from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ba9257ca-337f-4b40-8c14-157cfdffee4e&dis...
Once that is installed, restart and it should let you install Rescue and Recovery.
This worked perfectly for me, even though it is a little more complicated.

  • Windows 7 Upgrade: Cannot install Rescue and Recovery 4.3

I recently upgraded my T500 from Vista to Windows 7.
I have downloaded the following Lenovo software: Lenovo Thinkvantage Software Toolbox and Lenovo System Update 4.
I would also like to install Rescue and Recovery 4.3.  I downloaded the program from Lenovo's site, but I cannot get it to install properly.  I keep getting an error indicating that Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x64) SP1 must be installed.  I downloaded this from Microsoft's site and installed it, but I keep getting the same error.
    And help???

Hi guys I have the same problem, however after installing the 2005 version of the package from the link provided by lenovo here (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Q2QAK&AID=10429688&PID=3719336&...
I went to the control panel and checked what version of this package is installed. The case was that there were 3 versions of Visual C++ 2005 redistributable already installed.  This is a fresh installation of Win7 - 64bit
I removed all of them and reinstalled the one suggested by lenovo.
    The problem still continues.
I also noticed the following article from about the same time the package was released in 2006 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920854
Could it be that the RnR tool can not detect the redistributable package?
So far I have no idea how to solve this. Any help is appreciated.
