Trouble accessing a remote machine via ARD over a VPN
Hi There,
I'm having trouble accessing a remote Workstation via ARD over a VPN.
The VPN is set up and I can:
- Control our 10.6 server via ARD remotely
- Mount volums from the 10.6 server remotely
- Access another server (we run an accounting server) remotely
But we can't access a Workstation using ARD.
I can connect to the Workstation when in the office so assume it's configured for access - I guess I suspect the issue lies with the Firewall on the 10.6 server and/or the Netgear FSV366G Firewall.
The VPN is setup on the 10.6 server so figure it's something to do with Snow Leopard server?
I'm just not sure how to narrow things down and fix the issue - although I setup the server I'm not super Unix savvy.
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Ben
I can't say for certain what is going wrong in your case but I can confirm it is possible to do an ARD connection i.e. Screen Sharing to a remote user connected via a VPN. The way we do this is to get the user to connect to the VPN server (a Mac OS X Server), then on the Mac OS X Server in Server Admin see what IP address they have been allocated by the VPN server, then tell ARD Admin to connect to that IP address.
This works fine for me.
The IP address will be a 'local' to the ARD and VPN machines IP address it would not be the remote public or private IP addresses.

I suspect there is also information you are not giving to us.

how can i access any remote machine connected via a LAN for I/O oprations on Wndows platform, Could it be possible? i'v IP address.
via a LAN for I/O oprations on Wndows platformThe easiest way (assuming the I/O operations are file operations) would be to set
up a share on the remote machine and access it using File as usual.import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.IOException;
public class LanTest {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
File file = new File("//10.144.32.13/jdctest$/message.txt");
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
System.out.println(in.readLine());

Trouble accessing Lotus Notes DB Via ODBC NotesSQL 8 driver.
Hello,
I am using Crystal Reports version XI and am trying to access lotus notes database via an ODBC connection. My reports have been running sucessfully but we recently upgraded to Lotus Notes 8. I was receiving error messages stating that the ODBC driver was not compatible so I upgraded to Lotus Notes 8 SQL driver. Now I am receiving the following errors.
Crystal Reports
Database Connector Error: 'IM005:[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_DBC failed'
Crystal Reports
Logon failed.
Details: 01000:[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The driver doesn't support the version of ODBC behavior that the application requested (see SQLSetEnvAttr).
I am now using NotesSQL 8 and Lotus Notes 8, is there something that I need for crystal to recognize them.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, StacyHi Stacy,
I would appear Lotus changed the way their ODBC driver works from version 6. According to our [platforms |https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e09198a1-911e-2b10-179f-ce8eed51aed0] for CR XI we only support Lotus Notes 6.
We can't fix this now but you may want to ask Lotus if they know of any work arounds or updates to make it backward compatable.
You may want to try donwloading CR XI R2 SP4 and use your XI keycode to see if that works.
Thank you

Accessing a Windows computer via ARD
Just downloaded the ARD app and have successfully connected to my wife's MacBook, but I'm having troubles connecting to a Windows XP computer using RealVNC. I'm not sure what user name and password ARD is looking for from the XP computer. When connecting to the XP computer via RealVNC viewer, I'm not asked for a username (It's greyed out) but only a password.
Any insights?
Thanks in advance.
LoboHi
From the mac can you telnet to the PC on port 5900? Instead of paying for the Enterprise Version of RealVNC to install on the mac you could have used the free RDC for Mac:

Trouble accessing devices remotely.
I have a Linksys E1200 router.
My problem is I have installed a camera system that allows remote viewing.
I cannot access the system through the E1200 I am not very knowledgeable in net working.
What do I need to do to access the DVR from a remote computer?You have to enable a port number for the camera to be viewable over the internet or remotely. The first thing that you have to check though is the internet connection type that the router is getting from your internet provider. You would need a public ip address from your ISP in order for this setup to work. If you are already on a Cable internet service then it is okay because they usually have public ip addresses. If you are on DSL internet connection, make sure that your modem is set to full bridge. If that is all set then you can proceed to the next step of enabling port range forwarding on the router's setup screen for the dvr or the camera. Contact tech support for your DVR system to obtain the correct port number that will be opened on the router. And with that, the DVR should be assigned with a specific ip address so that say if you are on a remote location you can access the camera this way: http://publicwaniportnumberofcamera. You can refer to the links below for further instructions.

Unix Desktop of a remote machine via tarantella?
Hi,
is it possible, to start a Unix Desktop (i.e. a KDE session) via
Tarantella like it is possible to start a Windows Desktop Session?
I'm using EE 3.42 on a Linux machine.
Regards and thanks,
JensJens,
I'm a bit confused by your post. EE 3.42 provides as a default object
either KDE or Gnome (depending on what is installed). You should have
this as one of your default objects. This would launch on a Tier 2
server (EE server). If you wanted to launch the same application on a
Tier 3 (application server), you would just modify or better duplicate
the default KDE object and specify the new host in the "Hosts" tab in
the Object Manager.
If you don't have a KDE app object configured you can configure one such as
/opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella object list_attributes --name
"o=organization/cn=KDE (squiddy)"

Applescript - Access to remote machines

I am currently writing an applescript that will activate remote login and remote management from system preferences AND add the admin account under "Allow access for:"
Here is what I currently have,

This succesfully activates both remote login and remote management but I can't seem to find out how to click the "+" button under these tabs, or then add the correct user.
Any help would be appreciated.Here's the full script for adding a user to the Sharing > Remote Management list with all permissions:

Accessing windows shared printer via mac over wireless
So i want to share my deskjet 812c thats attached to my pc and be able to print via my MBP over wireless. I simply shared teh printer in windows, but have yet been able to figure it out, or to get it to work. It seems that the MBP will not see the printer, so any advice or any walk throughs would be appreciated.
ThanksTo connect to a shared Windows printer, open the Printer Setup Utility and click More Printers. For the new window, click the drop-down and select Windows Printing and then Network Neighborhood. The workgroup name that has been configured in the Windows computer should display. Double-click the workgroup name and then select the computer name from the new list. A new window will appear asking you to enter your Windows account name and password. Enter these details and click OK. Select the printer share name from the list and then for the Printer Model, browse to HP and then to the Deskjet 812C. If this model is not listed, download a copy of Gutenprint 5.0.0 for Mac OS X (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3). This has the 812C which you can use for network printing. With the 812C selected, click Add.
Note that if you are not prompted to authenticate to the Windows computer, then this can impact your ability to connect to shares, especially on XP SP2. You will need to either enable the Guest account or create an account on the Windows computer for the MacBook. -

Am having trouble connecting to remote site via FTP in DW CS6
It is asking for a SERVER NAME... What is that supposed to be ?? [First line in remote connection setup]
Did you define your site in DW yet?
Site > New Site or Manage Sites...
Your hosting provider sent you log-in credentials when you signed-up for hosting. Refer to that e-mail for the correct info to enter under Servers. See screenshot.

Silently/remotely upgrading clients from 10.6 to 10.7 via ARD/Script
Hi!
Apple finally made it possible to upgrade from a major OS (10.6 to 10.7) via an application running on the client, rather than having to boot of a DVD on 100 individual computers.
Does anyone know of a way to kick this installation procedure off remotely?
Currently I am remoting onto the machines via ARD and manually clicking the "Install Mac OS X Lion" app, then choosing Next, Next, Next, Install
it would be nice to be able to schedule this via an ARD task so the installer runs silently without the need to click on the GUI to kick off the installation.
Any ideas?
TIA!
FZI can add it's the same with upgrading to Lion... So I guess they changed some driver code between 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 and its not compatible with my logic board.
Annoying tbh.. -
Using Adobe CS3 app's via ARD?
Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has tried to use the Adobe CS3 design app's via a VPN connection. I have a client who's office will be physically inaccessible for 2 weeks plus, but their computer and internet connection will be functioning normally. I've tried and succeeded in setting up a solid VPN connection, and can remotely control her machine via ARD, screen sharing (10.5.x) and VNC.
The problem arises when trying to use some of the finer control tools within the app's. Specifically, the pencil tool. I get random starburst type rays across the pasteboard. I've checked to make sure that no specific brush strokes are selected. If someone at the office uses the machine with all the same settings the pencil works fine. I've had intermittent success using the pencil in InDesign, but Illustrator and Photoshop consistently give me bad results.
Any thought would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
RandyFirst: if you have CS3 on your computer and do not have the install disks then you are in violation of the software license.
Second: Minor bugs in Photoshop and Dreamweaver. PS gets slower and slower the longer you work in it.
Last question: probably not as the installer puts files in various places.
The operative answer is the first one. You are on your own conscience. -
Have to restart Lion server every time I want to access it remotely
L.S.,
My Mac Mini Server (10.7.3) is colocated at a data center.
At this point I have to restart Lion server every time I want to access it remotely for screen sharing over the internet.
I can make the connection, so all the right ports are open, as the port scan also shows, but it just times out when I wish to connect again within the same server without rebooting.
I bought Apple Remote Desktop but that doesn't help either. I can still connect through AFP, web and VPN.
I do hope that someone can give me some more insight in this problem.
Rebooting isn't a problem by the way...
UPDATE:
If I keep the session active overnight, there is no problem whatsoever, but when I log off as a "good practice", which I've learned using Windows, screen sharing will not work any longer. Forgetting about logging off seems to be a viable workaround at this point .
