Trouble accessing files on external USB drive after 10.6.8 update

Upgraded to Mac 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro (I'm not a techie, but the "About This Mac" thingy says 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 - I assume that means something to somebody). Since the upgrade, I've been having problems accessing data on an external HD connected via USB - there were no issues before the upgrade, but now it's impossible to even navigate to a particular file or subfolder half the time, as the process freezes 95% of the time (every so often I am able to get through, for no obvious reason) - usually I just get what looks like an empty folder and a little spinning thing in the bottom right-hand corner. Sometimes when I do get to a file - say it's a ZIP file - I'll try to unZIP it and the process will hang; if I try to drag it to the desktop and unZIP it there, I can't get it to copy to the desktop, I just get the "copying files" box and a bar that never shows any progress, it just hangs at zero bytes out of whatever it might be.
Also having intermittent issues with another external USB drive, which is the one I use for Time Machine - about one in every five backup attempts is successful, the rest of the time I get a message saying the backup couldn't be performed.
I have two external FireWire drives as well, and I'm having no trouble with either of those - so I'm assuming the problem is USB-related (and 10.6.8 related, since none of this was happening before the upgrade).
So - I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same issues, and f there's a solution that a non-techie like me could handle that won't make blood come out of my ears.
Cheers!

Thanks baltwo - the PRAM tip was helpful. For some reason I still have trouble accessing a few files, I'm putting that down to them being somehow corrupted. Eric, thanks, but I tried using Disk Utility and the communication problems I was having with the drive meant that the repair couldn't be performed. I may try again now that that side of things seems to be running a little more smoothly. Anyway, thank you both!

  • Automator to mount multiple ISO files on external USB drives

I have several ISO files on an external USB drive on a Mac mini. Double clicking on any of the ISO mounts it, one at a time.
I need to have an automator that mounts ALL ISO it can see on a given USB external drive. I have written an Apple script but that hangs up the Mac mini. I need help because I am not familiar with Applescript or Apple automator. I used Unix years ago, butg have a hard time with AppleScript.

Macs can't normally write to NTFS drives:

Your other problem sounds like another computer has the files open or application has the files open simultaneously. Try shutting down your Mac, and isolating your Mac from any network and try rebooting again in safe mode by holding the shift key at startup.

  • Can't access my apple lossless files on external hard drive after reinstalling windows 8.1

    Hi guys
New to this. I reinstalled windows 8.1 after windows continually asking me to change my password after not recognising it despite it being the right one. All my apple lossless tunes are on my external hard drive. Windows keeps saying 'I don't have access to this file currently'. I tried right clicking on hard drive, clicked properties, and tried assigning administrator rights to everyone but still no luck. Contacted windows who said it was an apple issue so here I am.
Can anyone help. I've got 900 albums on this hard drive and the thought of ripping them all again is stressing me.
    Thanks guys
    Stuart

Changing the path to the media folder doesn't change which database iTunes opens. If your original database is on the external drive then shift-start-iTunes and use the choose option to open it. If you no longer have access to the original database shift-start-iTunes and create a new empty library at X:\iTunes, where X: is the external drive letter, ensure the media folder is set to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, move all of your content inside X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, use File > Add Folder to Library > X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. There are some scripts near the end that can extract ratings, play counts and playlists from your device and the rest of the tip explains how you backup and restore the device with the new library to avoid losing data.

  • Access rights on external usb drives gets reset.

    Hi!
I use external usb-drivers for backup. I don´t wont other users on my iMac to access this drives, so I have set the access rights for "Everyone" to *"no access"*.
This works as intended, for a while... But for no reason what so ever, the access rights get´s reset to *"Read & Write"*. This might happen after a day or two..
Anyone experienced the same? Anyone know why this happens, and maybe have a solution to this problem?
    Best regards
    Geir.

Other users on your iMac can easily right-click on the external hard drive icon, get info and check the "Ignore ownership on this volume". Then everyone can read and write on the backup drive which probably isn't what you want. Theoretically, only users with admin rights can check that box, but there's plenty of ways to circumvent this.
If you want to restrict access more, lauch Disk Utility and create a new Read/Write disk image with encryption on the external drive. This will take some time to create and ask you for a password. I'd recommend a strong password (use the password generator that pops up) and let it be stored in your keychain. This way, Time Machine won't ask you to enter the password to back up or enter time machine. You should write down that password though in case the internal hard drive fails or your home folder (including the keychain) gets corrupted. You will be required to enter the password to do a full restore from Time Machine.
The downside of this is that the other users of your iMac can't use Time Machine at all.
Per default, the Time Machine rights are so that you can only access your own home folder plus the shared and public folder (and other non-standard folders within anyone's home folder as it has no specific access rights). Try logging in from another account or the guest account and see if you can access your user account's backup files in, say /Documents. It should deny access and not even reveal the folder's contents.

  • Troubles deleting files from external hard drive!!

I had my external hard drive plugged into my Macbook but i cannot delete any folder or file in it! There is not 'Move to Trash' option from the drop-down menu! Does this have anything to do with 'Folder Action' thing? please help! sorry i jst switched to Mac from Window recently so still trying to find my way through! Thanks

    Hi,
Mac OSX can read and write/delete files and folders on harddisks that use the FAT32 file system.
Mac OSX can only read and not write/delete files and folders on harddisks that use the NTFS file system.
Use Disk Utility to check what file system your HD uses.
To enable write access from OSX to NTFS drives, you can either use NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ or buy Paragons NTFS for OSX http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

    Ok, lets be brief.
This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have
had issues using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and
the external drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager
properties of the drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • Accessing files on external Hard Drive plugged in a Time Capsule

I am keeping the 2TB DATA for network backup drive only but cannot access content of Hard Drive connected to the TC. Also, is loging in as registered user a prerequisite to access shared files on the network? Configuring initially Time Machine with Time Capsule with AIrport Utilities requires a name and a password, do you have to create it? I started using my User/administrator name and passwords which were rejected.
In finder, Shared>time capsule>HD name, does not show any content while there is 450Gb on it. How to access it? Thanks

You are asking a heap of questions at the same time.
Access to the TC is set by the settings on the disk page.
The USB drive must show up on this page. It must also be formatted correctly which can be FAT32 or much better HFS+ ie Mac OS extended.. etc.
If you have device password that is public by default .. if you changed it find the password.. but you can also have a disk password.

  • Lost files on external hard drive after upgrading to 10.8

I needed to format my laptop and upgrade it from 10.6 to 10.08
i uploaded everything on an external hard drive
some files had some names like "Music", "Pictures", etc ...
but I named two files "                     " by that name the the icon i made it transperant
when i came to copy everything from the external hard drive everything was ok but the two files with the space name and transperant icon
they disappeared at all and i even tried showing hidden files by terminal and it didn't work
i tried installing NTFS but still didn't work
the problem is that i know they are not deleted but they are somewhere hidden because when i uploaded the files to the external hard drive the free space on it was the same so the files are there and they are not deleted
i just dont know how to get them back i even tried on windows 7 i did see the files but can't copy them and it tells me that they are under use
    help please ???

It is powered (the light is on).  I was uploading photos from the drive yesterday, so it worked perfectly fine before the upgrade to 10.6.8 (which I did during the night).  Is there anything else to try before I move it to another computer to see if it works?  Again, thanks.

  • Problems copying files to external USB drive

I am trying to copy my Pictures folder to an external drive, but I get the error below. I have checked permissions and that does not seem to be the problem. None of the files are open and neither is iPhoto, Photoshop Elements are any other program that would try to access the files. Can anybody help?
"One or more items can't be copied. Do you want to skip them and copy the remaing items?"
    Thanks.

So have you clicked through to copy them to see if any are missing? It may only indicate that there are some invisibles it cannot copy.

  • Accessing files on external TimeMachine drive under Windows XP

Ok here is what I know: after installing MacDrive7 and enabling "backup/file transfer" file view I can see the folders of my TimeMachine drive on my Windows XP PC.
BUT it almost impossible to access these files due to the crazy archiving structure of TimeMachine. I have got the feeling, that there is no way around this issue. I hope I'm not right! It would be nice if Apple could address this serious issue in further TimeMachine releases.
    Cheers

TM is a bunch of hard links (aliases that get you the actual file), unlike regular aliases, or Windows shortcuts. You DO NOT want this fixed. It's what makes TM so great. Windows may not be up to it yet.

  • Having trouble moving files to external hard drive

I have a freeagent pc&mac ext. hd that i usually use on my pc. I have used it on my mac in the past but i tried trasnfering all of the music from my macbook to my ext. hd and i got the following error message: "The item could not be moved because FreeAgent" drive cannot be modified". Does anyone know how i can resolve this issue? Thank you.

I'm guessing that you can only WRITE files onto your ext in windows. But you can only READ files in ext from mac.
FAT32 would support writing files in windows and mac, but I doubt that you can format it to FAT32.
So if you want to write files to your ext from mac, then simply reformat it using DU

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • Unable to access external USB drive on my windows machine

I have an XP SP2 box with several partitions. I Just purchased a MacMini (fisrt time apple user). I have joined the maac to the same workgroup as the XP box and can access all the partitions on the XP box with no problem. With the exception of the C: drive and the External USB drive.
I have the drive at Fat32 and can connect directly to the mac with no problems. Read, write all works fine. connect back to the XP box and I get an error -43. It ask for a user name and password and knows if I use the wrong password. I can even see a list of shares on the sub folders of the external drive but get the error when I try to access.
    Thanks in advance
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

This could be a smart design inside XP. FAT32 can't store file ownership so maybe it refuses to share a FAT format drve? From a security point of view this would be the right thing to do. On the other hand it could be a bug in XP that just by dumb lock looks like it is doing the right thing.
Either way it sounds like you have a good workaround: put the drive on the Mac and let the Mac share the drive. It's best if the drive is reformatted for the Mac so that user ownership and permissons can be used.
Don't worry one computer can't know how another's dive is formatted. The network hides this. All my shared files are on EXT3 formatted drives on a Linux server. All the clients see is "SBM".
