Trouble Accessing Virtual Machine After Time Machine Migration
I am hoping that someone else has run up against this problem and is able to help.
I recently purchased a new iMac. I upgraded to 8 GB of ram specifically because I have VMware Fusion and want to use it on my new machine.
I chose to migrate my entire old iMac to the new machine using my Time Machine backup.
VMware appears to have migrated successfully. I do not have any trouble accessing the application, but when I try to resume my only virtual machine, which is for Windows XP I get the following message:
VMware Fusion cannont connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program and to access all directories it used and rights to access all directories for temporary files.
How do I resolve this problem?
Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to offer me a clue on how to overcome this.
If I can't access this machine it appears as if I will be able to create a new one. I would like to avoid having to do that if it is possible.
Terri Schurter
Captfred,
In that folder there is a virtual machine. It is called Windows XP Professional. So it is there. When I am in VMware Fusion I can see Windows Media Player, which is what I was probably accessing the last time I was in the machine, so it does appear to have backed up the virtual machine. I would expect it to because it is a part of a Mac application, VMware Fusion.
It appears to be an issue with permissions that I don't know how to solve.
I know there is a VMware forum, but I can't even figure out how to sign up for it the darned thing is so confusing. I can't seem to post to it no matter what I do.

Can't access my account after time machine hard disk restore. HELP please.
i was attempting to partition my hard disk with boot camp when an error message appeared saying that it could not be partitioned and to backup my hard disk, reformat and restore using time machine, then run boot camp again. i did this and now i cannot access my account. at the log in page my password is accepted but a message appears saying that i am unable to access my account at this time due to an error (error not specified). any suggestions please.
thanks :-)
triggs.just been reading through various posts on here and it seems that timemachine does not backup file vault home folders. Thanks for the warning message apple. i have wiped my harddrive lost all my home folder and am now panicking becuase some of the data was for a charity that i help out with and can't exactly go asking for the information again. i presume if my old home folder was there i would see it in the user account on my external drives backups? any help would be appreciated but think i am now losing the will to live.
Cue the massive shouting match when i have to explain this to the charity secretary -
Accessing iPhoto Library From Time Machine
I recently began backing up mine and my wife's MacBooks using Time Machine. Previously, I would drag the folders to my Lacie drive to back them up. Generally, only iTunes, Documents, and iPhoto had anything new in them after the first time.
My issue is that I can't find a way to access the Time Machine backup files from another Mac. What if one of the Macs is stolen, as happened to us before? How can I access the images from the lost/stolen Mac that are backed up in Time Machine? Time Machine protects everything and in the case of iPhoto it's not possible to access the iPhoto Library using folders any longer, as it was in earlier versions of OSX. The images/folders are all somehow imbedded within the iPhoto Libary itself.
Thanks --You do not "access" your TM backup - you open it using TM and restore the file(s) you want from teh time your want
specific TM questions are best ask in the TM forum

Prior to the initial release of the 1G AEBSn, Apple hinted that support for Time Machine with AirPort Disks was going to be implemented, but it never came about even with the latest generation (5G) of these models.
If one wants to use Time Machine via wireless, must I use Time Capsule?
Basically, yes. However, the are other TM backup destinations that are supported that can be used besides the TC. A number of NAS manufacturers provide TM backup support with their products. -
Is there a way to put system to sleep after Time Machine runs?
I don't need to run Time Machine every hour, especially since my TM disk is on Firewire and not built in (had a disk fail with TM volume on same disk - bad idea)
When TM runs, it has to spin up the Firewire external disk, so I just run TM by hand now. I'd like to do this when I go to dinner or to sleep etc
Is there a way to have the Mac system sleep after Time Machine finishes running? An AppleScript perhaps?
thanksWilliam Donelson wrote:
Nope, there is an error message and TM does not automatically run when the drive comes back online.
What is the error message?
I have not seen one, and that is exactly how I use TM. Unmount, turn off the drive. Turn on the drive, the backup volume mounts automatically and TM resumes its scheduled backups.
Your Console logs will reveal the times in which TM attempted to back up but could not find the device:
Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Starting automatic backup
Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Backup failed with error: 1002
Dec 21 10:23:07 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1198]: Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume.
Dec 21 11:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1408]: Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
The last entry will repeat every hour, until it finds the TM device. Its normally scheduled activity will resume when it does.

After Time Machine backs up my file vault files (after logging out), when I next log into the user account it beachballs permanently during log in. The backup was successful, as I had to restore after this issue last time. Hard resetting doesn't resolve the issue. Is there a Time Machine setting that I should be aware of?
I have 2011 13" MBP, 10.6.8 and use an external hard drive connected via USB for my Time Machine backups.
ThanksI was able to get it to work. Thanks for your help. It's unfortunate the two applications do not work well together. This is what I did:
1) Safe boot and logged into the affected user (since the whole issue damaged the account's system settings).
2) Turned off File Vault in System Preferences. I needed to make some space on the hard drive first since apparently the total free space on the hard drive has to equal or exceed the amount of data currently in the file vault. I deleted some files and moved others to the Admin account. This whole process took awhile.
3) Finally, just restarted and logged in. The next time machine backup seems to be a significant backup, I assume because it's backing up the user account in a different way now that File Vault is turned off.
Thanks again! -
No internet after time machine backup
I sit here on a new computer under a different user name from my old backup. I can't get internet on my old user name. I realized my internet was working fine when I logged into my old computer at the same time to see if it was an internet issue or a computer issue. I'd hate to have to transfer all of my old info from my old user name if there is an easy fix for this that I'm not seeing.
I've rebooted the modem several times, I've run disk utility, and run all of the maintenance scripts for ONYX. I haven't deleted any preferences and I guess that should be my next step.
What's odd is that my old user name gets literally 1kbps internet, the new user name gets 1.5mbps, the usual for my internet. I've turned off the old computer to see if maybe there was a conflict with that as well, but the issue still happens.it's all the same as far as I can tell. No sharing, and I only use airport and one network.
I went ahead and deleted a bunch of the preferences in the users>library>prefs. It reset all of the network options, but the lag still exists.
One thing I forgot to mention was that on my first attempt at the time machine backup, it got hung up at the very end when it said "transferring network preferences". This makes me think the time machine backup has some corrupted file in the network prefs. I wish when I had made my second and successful attempt at the backup was that I unchecked the network prefs to be tranferred.
I opened up terminal to see if there's some extraneous process running, and there's a lot of stuff running and I can't really decifer if the root processes are supposed to be running or not.
Anyway, I'm giving up and just starting over on a new account. I've searched around the web, and this seems to not be an uncommon problem (no internet after time machine backup), and there's no apparent solution either.
At least I don't have to reinstall the programs, just move a bunch of stuff. It's a pretty odd bug and I hope Apple picks up on this one to fix. -

Hi guys,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
hope somebody can help me with this issue with TM.
I decided to restore my entire system from a backup I got in an external hard drive ( formatted mac Os Journaled). I didnt exclude any folder from the backup.
Basically using the mac osx installation disk
Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
Desktop files frozen after Time Machine Backup
When I get home and plug my Mac Book Pro into the external hard drive time machine starts up and backs up. After time machine is finished I cannot click on any of the icons on my desktop. I have to switch to the login window (i don't actually have to log out, just switch to the window like I am changing users) and then login in again and everything is back to normal. If it doesn't happen on the first back up it happens on one of the subsequent ones.
I have the exact same configuration at home and at work so I my guess is the problem I am having is time machine because it only happens at home when my external hard drive is plugged in. It has never happened at work.
Any ideas?I have the same issue, but I don't know it it's related to time machine. Perhaps. It happens after I disconnect my USB hub at work (including the TM backup disk). I assumed it was related to this, but maybe it's TM backup. I usually force quit finder, but maybe your "solution" is better.

Mail Restores after Time Machine Restore - Why?
I just re-formatted my hard drive and performed a Time Machine restore using Lion's Restore. When I launched Mail it asked to Import my Mail and once done many of the old msg's appeared as 'unread' including every msg in trash. Why? I though a RESTORE from Time Machine restored an "image" of a system and therefore Mail should have acted just like my old mail.
Comments?Your analysis is correct. It is, alas, a complex and imperfect world.
Time Machine is designed to make backups automatically without you having to remember to do so. it also saves a historical record of all of those backups so that if you don't notice a file is corrupted, wrong, or missing right away, you can go back 3 weeks and get the last known, good version. It also has a funky, intelligent interface that allows you to restore data in some specific applications. For example, you can restore individual Mail messages and Address book entries even though this data is stored in very hard-to-decipher databases.
All of those Time Machine tricks come with a price. The price is that you can't boot from Time Machine and Time Machine isn't always a perfect image. -
Has anyone encountered this message on their time capsule/machine? Time Machine couldn't complete the backup because the backup disk image"/Volumes/Patti's Time Capsule/Patti's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use"?
If you reboot the computer it should fix the problem. Also see the first link under More Like This to the right of this page:
I am received an error on my Time Capsule which states the backup disk image "Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro. sparse bundle? is already in use. so time machine couldn't complete the backup to time capsule - any suggestion -
2 problems: All files are locked - how to globally unlock on the backup drive? I am backing up large video files 500GB on a 2 TB machine. Time Machine repeatedly copies everything using up all of disk space. I only need 1 copy not, twenty. What to do?

Read only access issue after time machine migrate
Having a small issues on my new rMBP. I recently switched from my MBA to this newer rMBP and I previously had a Time Machine backup that I migrated over. For some reason though..when accessing my external hard drive it keeps asking to authenticate the user and I have to put in a password anytime I edit or add files to this external drive. I was also having issues running some commands in Terminal where it said I didn't have access..my current user shows up as being admin but I'm not entirely sure how to get past all these restrictions and have read/write access to everything.
So I looked at the above images and noticed that the disk labeled "HD-PATU3" is almost entirely full - only 5GB of 1TB is available - so it's essentially "full".
You said that this drive "was" used for Time Machine backups - is that still what you want to do with it in addition to your own files? If you do still want to use as TimeMachine that's OK, but you can't predict what TM will do with it as far as space goes unless you split the disk into two partitions. TM knows how to remove old "snapshots" to make room for new backups, but do you need space on there as well for your own stuff? Some people think it's not a good idea to mix your own stuff and TM stuff on the same disk volume, so that has to be your decision to do.
You might want to take a look at http://pondini.org/TM/6.html and read what he has to say (Pondini is a TM expert/god/phsychic - basically he recommends splitting up the drive into two partitions - one for TM and one for you - that way things are easier for your data as you don't have to live with issues the TM enforces on it's backup volumes. So answer the questions:
1. how large is the internal drive on the rMBP?
2. how much do you want the external drive to have for backups and your stuff - in fact is there a reason why you don't have all
stuff on the internal drive? There are performance penalties for having your data and TM backups on the same disk. You
probably have a nice large internal disk on the new rMBP so is this really what you want to do?
3. Depending on the answers we can get more specific to solve your issue(s)

Mail 5.3 crash after Time Machine migration
All,
I'm facing a problem with Mail 5.3 while trying to recover my email db from Time Machine after an update of MacOS.
Here the following steps I made to perform this update:
Update my iMac from SL to Lion 10.7.1 using the clean install way.
Install last 10.7.5 combo update.
Perform migration of content and system preferences from my last Time Machine backup before the upgrade (using the Migration wizard)
Finally, run Mail.
After having performed the email db conversion (without any error message), Mail seems to crash since no main window appears in the application.
I need to force the application to show the main window with the dedicated command of the Window menu.
But the result is not what we should expect !
Please check the snapshot herein attached.
While looking at the console, it seems that an error occurs during the execution of Mail, with the following error message and code :
29/10/12 08:30:37,835 Mail: An exception occurred during invocation of -[MailboxesController _writeSmartMailboxesToDisk]
29/10/12 08:30:37,836 Mail: *** -[NSSet initWithArray:range:copyItems:]: array argument is not an NSArray
Is there any member of this community who could have an idea what's wrong with this ?
Thanks,
MichelSome progress on this issue to share with you.
First, Mail.app on the others user account was fine and I managed to successfully perform the migration from Time Machine.
This led to the point that the problem was relying on the Mail DB rather on the Mail.app itself.
I have reinitialised the Mail.app on the user account where the problem occured using the following guidelines:
- access to the Library folder using the [Alt]+[Goto Menu] of the Finder
- rename Mail and Mail Downloads folders into Mail.old and Mail Downloads.old
- delete com.apple.mail.plist and all com.apple.mail... files in the Preferences folder
Then, start the Mail.app again
Mail.app has been reinitialised completely ! -
How to access iTunes library in time machine after changing corrupt HD_
Hi,
have a mini with 2.66GHz Intel Core Duo where several months after installing Mavericks it seemed not to be able to handle it anz longer. Whatever the szmptoms and mz attempts to save the thing, I brought it to the Service Center which finally said the hard drive needed changing. They copied the content onto a new 750GB one, but then found that thez couldnt move the itunes folder. They said I should just retrieve it from my time capsule.
Back home, time machine says it doesnt have a location set up for time machine, kind of telling me that my mini is not being recognised as my old computer.
There s threads and sites that tell you how to avoid a full new backup after hd change when you ve managed to copy the data directly. I couldnt find anything about retrieving specific data from the time machine that were not successfully migrated when changing the hd.
Any pointers, please?
Thanks,
HHey,
no I have not. I was kind of afraid that if I set up time machine, it'll create a new "account" and won't let me access the old backups in time machine. While user name hasn't changed, nor password, it seems that the service center has not copied my "preferences" or "profile" for the lack of a better word. It looks to me that time machine doesn't recognise the mini being the old one.
i just linked up itunes again and at least through itunes match I can see my library in icloud. But I don't want to download 130GB from icloud if I have them on my time capsule 10 feet away from the mini...
