TROUBLE BOOTING MAC OS 10.3.2

I am having trouble booting my powerbook g3 pismo to the mac os. when i start it up, it has the apple logo, then after about 3 seconds it goes to a circle with a line through the middle!!! what are possible causes for this?? How can i fix this?? thanks -roger

roger,
"well when i bought it last week it had 10.3.2 on it..."
How do you know that?
"It did not come with any install disks or system disks however,..."
Can you contact the seller, and request that they be provided?
"I have an OS 10.2 install disk which I previously purchased."
Do they look like THESE?
If the Firmware Update, was not applied, prior to the installation of OS X, there could be problems.
As you really don't know the condition of the system, it's difficult to diagnose where the problem lies.

  • Trouble Booting Mac Mini

Older Mac Mini. Hard drive failed. Just installed new hard drive. Reset PRAM. Got it all the way to the point where it was installing the OS on the new drive... (I was impressed with myself! Of course I probably spoke too soon).
Anyway, got about 75% of the way there (Disc 1 of 2) and the mac shut down unexpectedly.
Now, when I boot (regardless of the options I try), I get the apple logo screen and the do-hickey thing that rotates for about 20-30 seconds and then it shuts down.
If I try booting while holding <SHIFT> -- I get:
A screenful of hex codes and at the end:
Darwin Kernal Version 8.2.1: Fri Jun 24 23:31:10 PDT 2005; root:xnu-792.c.2.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC panic: We are hanging here....
for a few seconds before it dies.
I also can't seem to eject the OS CD...
    Yes, we are hanging here!
Help? I'm probably a couple of replies away from making a lamp out of it.

+From your last message it sounds as though the timing of pressing "C" is tricky. Can you give me a sense of whether I should be pressing it before, during, after the startup sound?+
I think immediately after the startup sound will work best. But again, you may have to experiment. Hold the C key down until you see the "gears" spinning on the screen. Or hear lots of CDROM activity.

  • Problems triple booting (Mac, Windows, and Tails on usb)

Im having troubles booting TAILS (built on linux) from USB on my Mac.
I have a windows partition setup on the same drive as my Mac os (mavericks).  I also have rEFInd setup.  When I reboot and enter rEFInd my Mac, windows, and Legacy USB options appear.  I select the usb option and windows boots instead.  I need to figure out how to boot from the flash drive and stop the Windows boot loader from taking over.  Mac os boots normal however.

  • Fresh OS X install: Trouble booting, crashing.

    Hey Apple Community,
I have an iMac 7,1 - mid 2007, 24 inch. About a week ago my iMac (gradually) became very slow, and crashed regularly. Trouble booting as well (booting took ages, with the grey progress bar on the white screen) At that time I was running Mountain Lion.
To fix the problem, I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, and upgraded to Mavericks.
After this there was still trouble booting, sometimes just a white screen, or a white screen with an apple logo. About one out of five startups are succesful and get me into Mac OS X successfully. (Disconnecting all peripherals gives me a higher success rate.)
When OS X has booted successfully, my iMac is extremely fast, except at some point it just freezes, I just get the round rainbow cursor, and the only way out is a hard reset with the power button.
Since the problem started, there's a process called "kernel_task" that is always using the most memory of all processes (about 400 mb), at all times. However, my RAM or CPU isn't using the maximum capacity, and I have plenty free CPU or RAM.
    My system specs:

    All help is appreciated.

  • Trouble booting from Leopard installation DVD

I'm having some trouble booting from the Leopard installation DVD, I was wondering if anyone here could help.
I want to reset my administrator password since OS X does not seem to be accepting it, and I heard that the best way to do this would be to boot from a Mac OS X installation DVD or CD and change some settings. When I start up my computer with the Leopard DVD in the drive, I hold down the 'C' key after the chime, and continue to hold it until the spinning gear appears.
From there, the spinning gear stays on the screen, and nothing happens. I've heard that it takes a while for the screen to come up, but I let it sit for over three hours and nothing happened. I also tried holding the Option key at startup and selecting the DVD, but the same thing happened. The DVD is in good shape and has no deep scratches, and it appears right away in the OS itself. I can't access the installer from the OS since it asks for my Administrator password, which it does not seem to be accepting. I also tried another solution to the Administrator password problem that involved typing some commands in Single User mode, but that did not help either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what exactly did you try to do in single user mode?

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

  • How to restore OS from time machine to a non-booting Mac HD

My Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage.  I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD)  kept rebooting.
So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot.  How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD?  When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still).
    Thanks

On the second HD, I'm using 10.5.8 (couldn't find my Snow Leopard disk) while the corrupted Mac HD had the latest 10.7.3.  I did try migration assistant but it didn't work, I guess because the 2 operating systems are different.  I will spend time today to try and find my Snow disk and upgrade and then upgrade again to my download version of Lion - on the second HD. When I look at the Mac HD it appears to be intact (that is, all files seem to be there) so I don't know why it can't boot unless on one of my migration attempts, something has gone awry.  I still have Apple Care on the machine and have put in a service request so will see what happens from there.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Dual boot Mac OS X and Arch: Arch installer cannot find CD drive?

Hi, everyone!  A friend convinced me to install Arch about a month ago on my desktop and I've loved it so much that I want to dual boot Mac OS X and Arch on my Macbook Pro 7.1.
So I have a Macbook Pro 7.1.  I have partitioned the drive in Mac OS X and installed rEFIt.  I have the Arch x86_64 disk which I know works because I installed Arch on another computer.
When I boot from CD I get the familiar Arch screen with options "Boot Arch Linux, existing OS... etc."  I click boot Arch, and it starts to load.  However, it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201005 ... ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt.  /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off."
After searching around the forums, some people said they had similar problems attempting to install via USB.  I used "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" and my CD drive does not show up in ramfs.. What can I do to install this amazing OS on my MB Pro 7.1?
    Thank you for your time!

Solved!  sledgehammer and MrE (sorry, I can't spell it) in IRC helped me out.  I had to download a newer iso that offers better Mac hardware support.  2010-12 iso

  • Windows XP SP2 freezes and then has trouble booting up

I've got a recent problem with my PC freezing while in use.  All of a sudden it freezes with no error messages.  The only resolution is to reboot the PC; however, most times the PC has trouble booting up after that.  Usually at some point before it boots up I'll get a CMS checksum error, hit the F1 key to continue and Windows will load up.  I'll have to restart it multiple times before I can get it to boot or I have to unplug the PC, let it sit overnight and then it tends to boot up with no problems the next morning.
I did notice that the fan to the PSU isn't running all the time.  Should it be?  I would have thought so, but don't know for sure.
I haven't tried reloading Windows over the current installation.  I have an original Win XP disk ()non-SP2).  This is a Windows CD, not a restore CD.  I've updated to SP2.  Will it be OK to reinstall over it with an older version of XP?  I guess I can just not replace any newer files if it asks?
    Thanks for any feedback.

Bosskiller, I just know the basics of hardware installation and such.  I can put them together, but don't have much knowledge in diagnostics.  The Geek Squad ran the basic diagnostic package and said everything checked out OK and that it was most likely a mobo or processor going bad.
I see you linked to an earlier post you made.  However, if the memory checked out OK and it's run fine for the last 6 months without any problems, would it do any good to run another memory check on it?
"Bosskiller, I just know the basics of hardware installation and such.  I can put them together, but don't have much knowledge in diagnostics.  The Geek Squad ran the basic diagnostic package and said everything checked out OK and that it was most likely a mobo or processor going bad."
suggest you to ignore "The Geek Squad ran the basic diagnostic package" and to test it personally.
    get memtest http://www.memtest.org/download/1.70/memtest86+-1.70.floppy.zip
extract files and make diskette bootable from installer. then reboot PC and boot from floppy, select test n5 only from there and leave it to test over 20times ensure no errors will come... step by step with memtest:  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=103598.msg760534#msg760534
other way is to try to install XP with each memory sticks separately until works.. leave only one stick into DIMM slot close to CPU socket and have a try to install OS again, if no go remove memory and replace it with other one. and retry.
or take PC to some computer repair shop to diagnose.

  • Unable to boot Mac OS X

Yesterday I decided to install Windows on my MacBook. I had both a Windows XP installation disk and a Vista Upgrade disk. I successfully did both according to the Boot Camp instructions. After tweaking Vista and downloading software and upgrades that I wanted to use on Vista I tried to reboot Mac OS X and I can't. What happens is the grey Apple logo appears for a split second and is then replaced by a circle with a line through it like a do not enter sign. From here my computer just boots up Vista. I have tried booting Mac OS X by choosing to do so through the Boot Camp Control Panel in Vista and have also just tried turning the computer off and booting up using the option key to select the Macintosh partition. Both ways produce the same result I described above. If anybody knows how I can fix this problem that would be great! Thanks!

try booting off the leopard installation disk and run disk utility and verify the disk and disk permissions. if nothing shows up wrong there, you might have to reinstall the mac system. you won't have to delete any data for this, just archive the old system and make a new one (yes, you can do this all off booting up on the leopard disk).

    Hello;
The best way to go about that is to completely uninstall the NI-DAQ driver you have installed on that machine, turn the computer of and remove the board from it.
You then reintall NI-DAQ, and put the board back. If the same behavior shows, the best bet is to search for some other peace of Software/Hardware currently installed on the machine that might be conflictant with NI-DAQ.

  • Boot Mac OS when temp copy of windows is expired?

    Hello,
I have found myself in a bad situation. New Macbook Pro; installed boot camp a while back and used a temp copy of windows (use it for 30 days and then buy or dont use it anymore); I'm booting the Macbook Pro up as windows and forgot the test copy expired. Now how do I get back to Mac OS? When the thing boots it boots windows then I cannot log on because the windows copy expired. There is also a CD in the drive which I don't know how to eject because I can't get into WIndows, and therefore cannot boot off a Mac OS CD.
Can I force the system to boot Mac OS?
    Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the quick reply. Also, for those who find themselves in the same situation you need to reset the startup disk once you get bakc to Mac OS or it will continue to boot into Windows.
