Trouble burning a DVD using AVCHD format

I recently completed about a 19 minute video project (photos and short video clips), and I was able to burn it to a DVD at standard quality using Premiere Elements 10.  When I try to burn to AVCHD, though, I get an error just before it's ready to start burning.  It encodes all of the media and just switches to the Burn menu when "Error" pops up.  There isn't any other explanation.  I've also tried to burn to a folder and I get the same result.
I've used Premiere Elements 10 for 4 years doing this same type of project, and I've been able to burn to AVCHD successfully in the past.  Any ideas why it's no longer working?
Computer specs:  Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop, i5 processor, 12 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive w/ 770 GB free.
I appreciate any help.

Premiere Elements 10 Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit). Just to get it out of the way...what video card/graphics card does your computer use? If NVIDIA GeForce, please stop and let us know immediately.
Have you found that this issue is confined to this particular project with its particular Timeline content? Can you start a new project and get a successful
burn to AVCHD format on DVD disc with the same or other Timeline content?
Let us go through the drill of deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file, and, if that does not work, then the hold 10.0 Folder in which it exists.

and in the 10.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then you delete the whole 10.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives enabled so that you can see the complete path cited. The path to Folder Options starts with File Explorer in Windows 8.1 64 bit.
Depending on your answers, this issue may take us into a deeper look into the Timeline content construction. But, the answers will be in the details. Let
us see what they tell us.

Reduce your burn speed to 1/2 the Rating of the Media.
    Disc Burner
If more than one supported disc burner is connected to your computer, choose one from the menu.
    Preferred Speed
When you burn a CD, iTunes automatically uses the best recording speed for the CD. However, if your blank CD is rated for a slower speed than the maximum speed of your drive, or if you experience problems creating CDs, you may want to change the recording speed to match the CD’s rating.
    Disc Format
Choose the type of disc you want to burn: Audio CD; MP3 CD; or Data CD or DVD.
    Gap Between Songs
Choose the amount of silence, if any, between songs.
    Use Sound Check
To have all songs on the disc play at the same volume, select this option.

  • I have been having trouble burning a DVD.

I have been having trouble burning a DVD.  It goes through all the steps until it gets to the multiplexing "burn" step and then with 3 minutes left the disk pops out.  The disk is left empty and an error comes up.  I have been able to burn DVD's before, so this is frustrating.

Well - not correct answer as I understands it - This is a very complex question. In my case I'de put a button just touching the TV-Safe area boarder. Moving it a minute inside and the Error disappeared.
BUT - there are so many other things that I collected a long long list on this - read and see if You find help here.
    Multiplexing Error
    PART One.
Use of strange video/audio material eg .avi, .wmv, .mp3 etc.
    I only use.

Audio = .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else coverted to this .aff 48KHz)
    Chapters !
    A.    Using strange letters in video project name eg +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name eg +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
    • Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)

I always makes a DiskImage first and test this so that it runs OK
I use only - Verbatim DVDs
    I use only - DVD-R

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.
    2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutly needed.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing widescreen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the uneditited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous trys, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no mulitplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 secs beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplexer Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.

  • I have an '09 15" mac book pro running os x mavericks and I'm having trouble burning a dvd.

I have an '09 15" mac book pro running os x mavericks and I'm having trouble burning a dvd. In iMovie, I sent my movie to file and then to iDVD to burn a copy. It was saved in Documents. When I went to iDVD, the thumbnail image of the movie to be burned was faded and inoperable. What's going on now?

Did you export the movie out of iMovie as 480p?  Next just drag the movie from the Documents folder into the iDVD menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Lastly follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • My MOV videos do not play when I burn a DVD using iPhoto.

My MOV movies do not play when I burn a DVD using iPhoto.  I can use the other method with my Mac to burn DVDs but the videos are not good quality like they are in my iPhoto albums.  How can I get better quality in the DVD videos if I am unable to burn a DVD using iPhoto?  I upgraded to the free Mavericks.

    Hi
Most common origin to this are:
Brand of DVD used - NoName, Memorex etc cheap brands might work as Data-DVDs - BUT NOT as Video-DVDs
Type of DVD used - I only use SL-DVD-R as they also playback on older DVD-players. DVD+R for newer DVD-players. Never ever DVD+/-RW. Dual-Layers usually creates more problems than Single-Layers
BURN SPEED - Very IMPORTANT factor - I never go faster than x4 - Normally I use x2
Material used - Video Codec, Photo and Audio file formats
Video-Codec: StreamingDV, AIC and HDV (I use)
Photo: .jpg - NO .bmp or other - all converted to .jpg first
Audio: .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz (as on Audio-CDs) - NO .mp3, wma etc ailient formats - all converted to ..aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz first
Free Space: on Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk - I never go less than 25Gb when doing Video-DVDs (for SD-Quality Video - if HD material is used 4-5 times more are a safe low level) (Other external Hard Disks - DO NOT COUNT as space here can not be addressed by Mac OS or iDVD for it’s massive use of .temp files)
Dusty DVD-burner Laser: I use a Cleaning DVD (no liquid but the one with brushes) from time to time.
Harmed DVD-burner Laser: Easy to do by burning more than three DVDs at a time - I let it rest for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs. If this happened - then only a costly repair will help. It will not heal by it self.
OBS: There are more than one Laser in the DVD-Burner so other functions might work OK as Playback CD/DVDs and even burn CDs. Still being broken.

  • Does iDVD work with Maverick? This is the first time I tried to burn a DVD using iDVD after upgrading to Maverick. It seems to get stuck at encoding menu stage and not doing anything.

Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

Converting does not mean losing the original files.
iTunes creates copies of the files in the chosen format.
You can easily distinct them by looking at the 'Kind' column or by sorting on 'Date Added'. The converted files will have the most recent 'Date Added'.
Then put them in a playlist, choose 'MP3 CD' in the Burning preferences and burn them to CD-R.
If you don't like a long list of songs, read iTunes: How to set the play order of songs on an MP3 CD how to burn by artist or album.
If all went well, you can delete the mp3's from your library.
If you would like to keep them, but not in your current library, drag them from the library to a folder on your desktop and then delete them. Dragging to a folder will create copies of the mp3's.
If you're using iTunes 7, you could then create a second library and drop the folder with mp3's in that one.
Creating a second (third etc....) library is done by pressing and holding the Option-key when launching iTunes. Hold the key until you see a window which enables you to create or choose another iTunes library.

  • How do I burn a dvd using the PAL setting for Europe?

    This is an older answer:
Make a new project in PAL using custom settings. Copy and paste the contents from the NTSC project to the PAL project. Render everything.
Don't do this unless you really need to. If you're making a DVD for Europe you don't need to.
    And my question is:
Why is it not needed to change it to PAL if this DVD is for Europe?
Would it not be best to use a project with PAL SD 720x576 DV Anamorphic  25i  ?
What's the difference between .... x756 DV  and  ... DV Anamorphic
and also completely without this DV and DV Anamorphic?

You don't, unless you want to have PAL resolution. Would it not be best to use a project with PAL SD 720x576 DV Anamorphic  25i  ?
Yes, if you want a PAL resolution DVD. That's why the OP is asking how to make a PAL project. What's the difference between .... x756 DV  and  ... DV Anamorphic
DV is 4:3. DV Anamorphic is 16:9. and also completely without this DV and DV Anamorphic?
Not sure what this means. The DVD specification is the same as DV resolution. If the OP as an HD project that has a frame rate of 23.98, the output resolution will be NTSC DV anamorphic, because DVD only accepts 23.98, 24, or 29.97 frame rates in 720x480, not in the PAL resolution 720x576. That has to be in 25fps.

JUst to add the reason you don't need to make PAL for Europe is because all PAL DVDs can play back NTSC. Unfortunately almost no NTSC players can play back PAL.

  • What's the best method of burning CD/DVD using MBP?

As per my title, what is the best method of burning CD/DVD using my MBP? Can I use iDVD, disk utility etc? I'm referring to burning stuff like music, photos, doc etc. I used Toast Titanium (shd be version 6) with my iBook G4 but it doesn't seem to work with MBP after data migration. Guess the version is too old and not supported in Snow Leopard. Is there any upgrade for Toast Titanium and how much would it cost?

    Hi tanvivien,
The best method is really going to depend on what you're burning. All of the iLife applications (iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, etc.) make it pretty easy to burn with the click of a couple of buttons via the "Share" menu drop down.
You can use Finder for files/data as well as media but if it's multimedia then usually the programs where they're managed or stored is easier.
Information on Toast and how to upgrade would be found here - http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html

  • Trouble burning a DVD for a DVD player

I am fairly new to Mac so forgive my ignorance but I am having the hardest time burning a DVD-RW in such a way that it will be readable by a DVD player.  I have a blu-ray player that can read MP3 and MP4 and still I get a message that says it cannot play the disc.  I have tried using Disk Utility, Burn, and iPhoto Slideshow Export.
It works perfectly fine for both Mac and PC computers but not for a DVD player.  What are the options?

Have you checked your DVD player that it can actually read DVD-RW? Some cannot. Just out of curiosity - why would you burn to a re-writable disk?
If it is a video/slideshow, then you do need authoring/burn software such as Burn or Roxio Toast in order to burn it in a format DVD players can handle. Finder cannot burn a video/slideshow which will playable in a DVD player.

T he recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)
    IDVD Version 6.0.3
Emac- OS 10.3.9--- in the owner's manual it DOES state my emac can burn DVDs. Is this correct?
I am using FujiFilm DVD-R . Never used the DVD apps or burner before. I PRAM'ed 3 times. Also did 6 CD audio burns to check the drive. Is it the media-- Fuji does not work? I used Office Depot generic for audio CD-Rs.
I keep getting this error message after about 20 minutes of programming the DVD-- then it ejects with this message:
"The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
When using the IDVD application to burn my slideshow onto a DVD; Then I contacted Apple Care and I was told to use Disk Utility to burn my DVD in lieu of IDVD not working.
I converted my slideshow into a .dmg format; all was verified successfully. Then I receive this error message when attempting to BURN DVD:
"STOP The device drained its buffer without burn under run protection"
I made a WONDERFUl slideshow-- of only 17 slides-- confirmed I have plenty of room on hard drive and et al on the "disk information". I have attempted since May 7th to get this DVD to burn my slideshow. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have deadlines-- now it is for Tuesday May 15th. Please alert me to an alternative until I can get my Emac working properly on what I can do to make copies of my slideshow ASAP. Thank you.
Now I looked thru your ERROR message archives and found NONE to match mine. What do these error messages mean-- is my Emac not working? This is first time ever I tried to use IDVD and IMovie and Disk Utility--- so the first impression is VERY VERY VERY bad for Apple's "easy to use for first time customers"....
Oh to add information-- I DO have an external DVD recorder-- have yet to even see how to hook it up to my Emac-- if this is an alternative to meet my Tuesday deadline-- PLEASE let me know-- how do I burn a copy of my slideshow into an external DVD recorder?

Your drive is actually TWO devices - one set of optics and laser burns/reads CDs, another set of optics/laser reads/wtites DVDs. The fact that your drive can burn CDs doesn't mean it is working for DVDs.
You might want to get back to Applecare and expalin again the error messages you are seeing. They really don't involve iDVD.
I converted my slideshow into a .dmg format; all was verified successfully. Then I receive this error message when attempting to BURN DVD:
"STOP The device drained its buffer without burn under run protection"
You either have a media problem or you have a DVD burner problem.
