Trouble burning backup discs

Attempting to backup my recent additions to iTunes onto discs the burn procedure is interrupted.
I put a fresh disc when requested. The computer "checks the media", then it "reviews the playlist" and states "burning to disc". Immediately it runs to "burn completed" and ejects the disc.
A message appears on the screen: Burning has failed due to an unknown error (-8785). You may retry burn, start the next burn or cancel. (buttons for the three choices appear at the bottom the error message window) I attempted each several times always getting the same message.
I have tried with more than half a dozen blank discs. Some DVDs some CDs. Still the same error "(-8785)"
Has anyone else seen this message? What can be done?

Hi slothz,

We have the same Problem on the mac. Nobody knows an answer.
I personaly have the problem on Intel and PowerPC Processor and in the moment I'm investigating:
My last Backup was successfully burned on Oct. 13th. I guess it has something to do with the amount of files or the files (filenames) itself.
Take a look at the reference for updates of my investigations...

  • Can't burn backup disc

Tried to backup about 1.4GB to a DVD+R (4.7GB max). I get this message:
"This disc did not verify correctly and is unreliable. Because this disc is unreliable, discard it and try again using a new, blank disc. Error code OX80020063"
    Tried 3 times.

Have you ever been able to burn DVDs successfully?
    What brand DVDs?
What burn app are you using & what burn speed?
May be a clue on the links with the same problem.

  • Trouble burning a disc

im trying to make a disc with pictures ive edited but 15 pictures are taking up a 700mb disc???? Why is this and how can i get more pictures to my disc. Especially since im having to edit most if not all the photos...... and yes i have flattened the images. Thank you in advance for any help

    Hi,
We need to know more details of the images that you are trying to write to the CD.
What type of file are they and what is a typical file size? You can get those detail from the file information/properties.
It sounds as though the images may be in either PSD or TIF format which tend be large files as no compression is done. If you save them as JPG files, you will get more on the CD as they are compressed.
Can you also let us know which version of PSE you are using and your operating system.

  • Having trouble burning mp3 discs from media sou

    hi all
is there any way i can stop mediasource re arranging a playlist when it tranfers it to the burn list. it puts it in alphabetical order, but i want it left in the order i have made the play list in. it only does this when i try to burn an mp3 cd
    thank you

I too was wondering the same thing. My burn list jumbles them up by track number meaning several albums means all?the number tracks are together etc... instead of alphabetically. Is there any way of doing the burn list so that they burn in order at least by album? I have tried windows media player,?Yahoo music Jukebox and creative media source. one fo them will let me sort my burn list by album but when I select burn list it mixes them up again as it burn them. since mine does it by track # would it be possible to go into my music library and renumber my tracks from top to bottom?

Having trouble burning discs, sometimes error 4280 comes up, anyone know?
sometimes it will say checking media, then it will do nothing!

Look around for more posts about this. There are TONS. I'm guessing you have upgraded to the newest Itunes. Which apparently makes you CD burning fail! Itunes needs to fix this problem but so far they haven't. I think there are little things that you can do to maybe fix it but I'm not sure so look around for other posts about this same kind of thing, anything along the lines of CD's not burning and error 4280. I wasted 5 CD's trying to get past this error thinking it was my CD's fault.

  • Trouble burning Blu-ray image using share to Hard Drive or disc.

On  version  Final Cut Pro x 10.0.6,  When I try to share to a DVD disc it tells me there is not enough space on the DVD disc , the project is 2:30 minutes, I put dual DVD .
After that just update on version Final Cut Pro x 10.0.8
I have a tried to burn to a Blu-Ray  to the hard drive as a disc image using Share>Blu-ray. when trying to share Blu-Ray to the hard drive  I get this error after a day of transcoding:

This is the error message I get. It's after FCP X is done with making the BMV folder and runs that disc burner app. There is about 850 gigs on the drive I want to save the disc image to, lots of space.
I thought maybe the drive the events was on was affecting this process, because it was full. I cleared out about 30 gigs and still got this message.
I never had any problems creating a Blu-ray disc image before. That's the optimcal way, IMHO, because you can burn the BD in Toast as the disc image and Toast won't reencode or do anything, it just burns the disc image and the disc has played on ever Blu-ray player I've tried it on.

  • Trouble burning Blu-ray or disc image using Share

I have a project I have tried to burn to a Blu-Ray disc and to the hard drive as a disc image using Share>Blu-ray. I have burned successfully before to the same Blu-ray burner with other projects. But now when trying to burn a disc I get this error after a day of transcoding:
The operation couldn’t be completed. (DSPPublishing error -1024.)
When I try to save it as a disc image it tells me there is not enough space on the disc even though there is over a Terabyte empty. The project is estimated as 21.6 gig so I know it should fit on the 25 gig bluray and of course on the hard drive. Trashing prefs did not work either. This is a very frustrating process as each attempt takes a day to transcode before the error pops up and you have to start all over again.

I just got my Mac back from Apple repair and I can't burn a disc. What do I need to do to make that happen?

    Hello deneye2112,
Thank you for providing the details of the burning issue you are experiencing.  I found some resources that I think might help:
First, I recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac (I wasn't sure if you had a removable battery or a built in battery, so I listed the steps for both):
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
Note: Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your ownNote: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:

  • I can't burn a disc even though my computer is authorized

I'm having trouble burning discs from a brand spanking new laptop with Windows 8, and the latest itunes version! My computer is authorized, but the option to burn a playlist to disc still doesn't show-up in the file catagory. I'm baffled and frustrated....

Look at your sidebar.  (If you don't see it, enable it by View > Show Sidebar.)  Right-click one of the playlist names, and the contextual menu will include "Burn Playlist to Disc."

  • Windows 7 does not recognize cd/dvd drive. Will not burn a disc

In November 2013, I  bought a refurbished hp Compaq 7900 convertible minitower, Product No. NJ3226UC#ABA, 32-bit.  Windows 7 and WMP 12 were installed by the company that refurbished it.   WMP's  play, rip, burn, sync worked perfectly.
I made the mistake of installing itunes.  I purchased music and made a playlist from my library and itunes.  I tried to burn the playlist with Memorex discs.  WMP burn would kick out the cd at 99% complete.  I tried a different brand of disc and had the same  problem.  The message each time was 'Windows Media Player Encountered an error while burning. Verify that the burner is connected properly and that the disc is clean and not damaged.'  I tried burning a disc using itunes burner but it didn't do anything.
First, I removed every Apple application from my computer.  Then I ran Microsoft CD/DVD trouble shooter.  It didn't correct the problem and gave me the message "cannot locate CD/DVD burner".  I ran trouble shooter in the Control  Panel selected System Security's, Find and Fix. Then Selected  Configure a Device .  Results were 'Hardware may not be detected try to do what you wanted to do again' I tried 2-3 times.  WMP would not burn.  Tried Apple for help and didn't want to reinstall itunes.  I reinstalled Quick Time.   Followed Microsoft's 5-step resolutions:
              1.  Used the troubleshooter in Control Panel.
              2.  Ran CD/DVD Fixit trouble shooter.
              3.  Manually fix corrupted registry.
              4.  Update or reinstall driver.
              5.  Create a sub registry key.
I tried to burn after every step and got the same result.it burned to 99% and kicked out. I used system restore back to May 15, 2014  thaat was before installing iTunes.  No burn.   Checked  driver and response was that 'Driver is working.  No problem was found'.    Today, ran Troubleshooter in ControI Panel and this was the messsage, 'Configuration Settings May Be Incorrect'.  How do I correct  this?  Help!  What next?

    Hi,
You were given some very good advice on your other post.  I ran into a very similar issue when I had installed iTunes and the end result was that I had to do a factory recovery back to a day one condition. Then I had to do a slow software installation process, checking every time I had installed a third party application.  I got tripped up a couple of times but determined that I had to install iTunes before installing other CD/DVD media programs (Roxio,WMP and Cyberlink).
Do a fresh OS installation without the extra third party software and then install Imgburn.  Then use Imgburn to determine the capabilities of your optical drive and match the media specifications those detected by Imgburn to the media type that you are using. Do not use cheap media as the firmware in your optical drive may not support it. I prefer to use Verbatim media. Now see if Imgburn will burn your optical media before attempting to install iTunes and other CD/DVD optical media programs.

  • "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly"

    Hello everyone,
I have suddenly developed a problem when trying to burn a CD. I get the "Checking playlist" and "Initializing" messages, and then Writing...(the name of the first track)", but about 20 seconds later, just when seems as if it will start burning, the CD is ejected and I get the following message: ""The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
I have browsed the forums here and it seems that many other people have had similar problems. I am running a Powerbook G4, OS X version 10.2.8, iTunes 6.0.5.
I have used several different brands of media, and many slower burning speeds, but nothing helps.
I can still listen to CD's with my computer, just not burn anything.
My computer is about 5 years old. Do you think that this problem is suddenly occurring simply because my optical drive needs to be replaced?
Also, another issue, possibly related, but maybe not, is that, after my burn failed for the first time, I put in a completely different CD to see if it would play. It did, but instead of listing the correct tracks on the CD, it showed the tracks of the previous playlist that had the failed burn.
For example, I imported the tracks from one CD into my Library, then moved them to a playlist. When I tried to burn the contents of that playlist to a CD, I received the "attempt to burn failed" message that I previously described.
Then, I inserted a completely different disc, but iTunes read it as having the same contents of the playlist that had failed to burn, but when I clicked on the track titles, they played from the new CD that I'd inserted, not the failed playlist. So although the titles indicated that I was working with the failed playlist, the media that played was from the new CD.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Sarah

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm having a similar problem. In my case, the problem started about two months ago. I regularly update software. Currently I'm at 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.3.2(6).
In my case, I'm trying to backup recent iTunes purchases. I'm unable to burn CDs with the original combo drive (CD) or my internal NEC burner (DVDs). I get a series of coasters. Occasionally .Mac Backup fails as well. Toast 7 works fine. Even stranger, I can burn 1 DVD successfully with an external Pioneer DVD burner (4x) USB 2 using iTunes. (I have a belkin USB 2 card) Multiple DVDs fail. I recently switched to this PowerMac from an iBook and several preference files were copied with my home directory during the transition. The external drive was used with the iBook, but not on this system before which may lend to the preferences file as a possibility.
However, I find it odd that my external drive works and both internal drives are failing. I was suspecting the IDE controller on the logic board, except that Toast works. This logic board is not as old as the computer. It was a replacement in 2005 when an after market ATI card fried and took it and the power supply out. At first I suspected a hardware problem and replaced the IDE cable which looked warn. The NEC drive is about two years old and the combo drive is the original. They are on the same controller.
In my case it is certainly possible the drives or controller are starting to fail. I wonder if anyone else might have an external cd/dvd drive they could test that are having the problem.

  • Tried to burn backup of iTunes library--crashed mid burn, now won't burn

Last night I was burning a backup of my iTunes Library to DVDs. It was supposed to burn only what's new or changed since my last backup (over a year ago). iTunes estimated that it was going to take 27 DVDs.
I got through the first 10 DVDs and then went to bed. When I woke up this morning, my iMac had powered off. I turned it back on and went to start the backup again. iTunes processed what needed to be backed up, gave the warning that it can't backup a couple of podcasts, and told me it'll take 17 DVDs--the same info as before. But then I get this error message:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry. If you want to retry the current failed burn, Click on Retry. If you want to go to the next disc burn, click on Next. Otherwise click on Cancel."
Regardless of which option I chose, nothing works.
I've called Applecare about the problem. They've had me
    -reset the PRAM
    -unplug everything from my iMac
-delete the Library > Caches folder from both my hard drive and user account
-test burning a backup from iTunes in another user account (it worked find)
The last suggestion was an archive and reinstall, which I don't want to do (I want to be able to backup my music, but it's not worth it if I have to spend a day reinstalling all of my third-party applications).
(And it's not a problem with the blank DVDs: one that was rejected by iTunes in my account worked fine when I backedup to it from another account.)
Any idea what's causing iTunes to get the aforementioned error message and how I can fix it?
    Thanks!

Ok sounds like one of two things happend here
    1. iTunes lost its activation during the update. Try clicking on one of the songs in iTunes. Will it play them? If so they this is not the issue. If not it should ask you to provide the user name and ID for your account to activate that copy of iTunes.
    2. The other thing that may have happened here is that the iPod was connected to another computer and synced with another instance of iTunes. If this is the case then the iPod will only sync with that computer. You will need to delete the songs off the iPod and reload them from iTunes.
NOTE : DO NOT DELETE YOUR SONGS OFF THE IPOD UNTIL YOU ARE SURE YOU HAVE THEM ON A PC SO YOU CAN RELOAD THEM ON THE IPOD. Once the music files are lost they can not be replaced.

  • Restoring songs from my backup disc of purchased song frm Itunes...

Awhile back ago I burned a disc with songs and videos that I purchased in Itunes. I burned them onto a cd.  Now I inserted 1 of my disc to restore but it's taking awhile.  How long does it take?
Should I try to insert another backup disc?

It should take about 20 to 30 seconds a song.  Depending on how long the song is.

  • What is on a bootable backup disc?

While I'm pretty sure what a bootable disc is...( I think) It allows one to startup their computer in cases where for whatever reason their computer is not responding. I've read in the discussion pages that I should have a bootable backup for when I update software . So my question is what is on a bootable backup disc? and for that matter what is generally on any backup disc and what kind of disc is used? Sorry to seem so dense but I'm not very techno-savvy as you can obviously tell by my questions.
Thanks in advance for your help

    Hi jopaglke,
Your first and most safely reliable boot disc is your Mac's original install DVD. It has Disk Utility on it, and Terminal, and the Hardware Test!
Personally I also keep a duplicate of my Mac's original install DVD, just in case.
    - With Disk Utility, create an image of it while it's inserted. Choose "CD/DVD Master" kind of image, the one that ends with .cdr (not .dmg), and burn it on a blank DVD.
This works for those whose original DVD is small enough in size.
    Another safe and handy solution:
    - partition your external hard drive
(you DO have an external for backup purposes, right?),
and assign 10 GB to one of the partitions where you'll install (Custom-Install)a light version of your original OS.
You can perform the Software Update updates, and install your favorite utilities on it
    (TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior etc)
so this bootable partition will be always ready for an option-boot (alt-boot) in case of a problem.
For those who own an original DVD that exceeds usual blank DVD sizes, the partition solution is the other simple and genuine one still possible.
Then there are bootable discs solutions by third-party softwares that you can buy (some of them are really good utilities).
