Trouble burning with OneStep DVD

I've been archiving a number of my Digital hi-8 tapes onto DVD using OneStep DVD with no problems until recently. The last few hi-8 tapes I want to archive onto DVD do not start immediately so OneStep seems to think there is no information on the tape and will not burn a DVD. I get an error message as follows: "Nothing Captured. No video has been captured. Aborting OneStep DVD creation."
I've been trying to figure out a way to "trick" OneStep DVD into not rewinding the tape on my camera all the way so it will start when the video actually begins on the tape but I can't figure out how to make it work because it keeps rewinding regardless. I have too many tapes to create actual DVD projects so OneStep is the way for me to go at this point. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

Hi Len;
I actually tried this approach but, for some reason, I get an "out of memory" message when I take this route. It's worked fine (with other movies of the same type) when I am able to burn straight to DVD but gives me grief when I try to burn the very same movie from iMovie. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

  • Trouble burning dual layer dvd's with my superdirve

Hello, my question is regarding burning dual layer dvd's on my macbook pro. After finishing up a 5.6 GB movie in DVDSP4, i exported as an image (burned it as a .img) and then opened it up in disk utility for burning. Upon execution, i received an error message that said " the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I then tried burning the .img via DVDSP4 as well as the standard drag to disk on my desktop, all with the same luck. When trying the standard drag, drop and burn method (burn folder on my desktop), i received the error code 0X80020022.
After having no luck, i tested my super drive with standard CD's and single layer DVD's which it burned to just fine. I then tried switching media from memorex dvd dl +r's to sony dl + r's, but unfortunately it just refuses to burn to dual layer.
Any ideas as to what might be the problem?
    Thanks.

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

  • Trouble burning with Alias and DVD studio pro

Thanks for taking a moment to read this.
I'm trying to make a DVD-rom and have everything linked up correctly, however, when I drag or copy my pdf documents into the right folder, it creates an alias of the files. This seems to be common when burning regular DVD's and the computer then simply burns the main files from the alias onto the disk, however, when I burn the dvd-rom through DVD Studio Pro, only the alias's copy to the folder and then the links within the dvd don't work(there is no data, only the alias for the documents)
    Any ideas are much appreciated?

It sounds like you have set up a "Burn" folder. You do not want a burn folder. Create a regular folder. Drag everything you want on your DVD into that folder (or copy everything you want into that folder by Option–dragging the file into the folder.) Then in DVD SP click on your disc in the Outline then look at your Inspector. In the DVD-ROM section, select the folder that you have set up.

  • Trouble burning to a DVD

Hi, im new to iMac, im trying to copy some photos to a DVD, ive checked the size of the files, together they come to 3.7gb, the DVD im using is a Imation 4.7gb DVD+R, but when i try and burn them using iPhoto it says that theirs not enough space on the disk, any help or guidance would be appreciated,
    Kindest regards Ant

What's the purpose of the DVD?
When you use the Share -> Burn command in iPhotot it makes a "mini-iPhoto Library" on the Disk, complete with database, thumbnail and preview files. These are no included on the calculation in the iPhoto Window. This method of burning is designed for sharing with other iPhoto users or as a (limited) back up option.
If you want to just share snaps with other computer users then File -> Export and send them to a folder on the Desktop, Burn that to disk with the Finder.

  • Trouble burning a PAL DVD

Hi, I am having issues with trying to burn PAL DVDs.
We have a distributor that requires PAL DVDs as screeners with & without TC burn.
They required we take our masters (HDCAM, 1920 X 1080, progressive, 23.98 fps) & send it to a post house that could do  an Alchemist conversion & make 1080 50i, 25 fps masters on HDCAM.
This was done & we have captured the tape to FCP in a PAL project. Exported out & files went through compressor using DVD Best quality - 90 min template.
Confirmed that files are correct size & speed in inspector.
In DVDSP i set the project up as PAL.
There are no menus - just the program with 5-6 chapter markers.
PAL DVD was created as region free.
When we check the DVD on a region free deck the playback is very jerky.
Have tried playback tests with commercial PAL DVDs & they play back fine.
Anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Using a 12 core macpro with FCS 3
If you need more detail please let me know .
    THANKS.

Russ: Converting the standard is not an option through Compressor as they absolutely need the timing to be the same. I am the post person, so it is not my call. The producer's have determined that this what they have to do (right or wrong). I can do a test with the master file in compressor to see if I get better results, but it is something that I cannot deliver.
Nick: Again it is not my call. I have pointed it out to the producers & was told that is not acceptable to them. So it is my hoop to jump through. I have told them about the NTSC DVDs vs PAL & their response is that is not acceptable. We don't need worry about DVD replication anymore as all of our sales will become either digital, or delivery through this means by the distributor from the HDCAM 50i masters & using the PAL DVDs as reference.
Michael: We are monitoring the video from FCP with an AJA KONA 3G card to a broadcast monitor thru SDI (dont remeber the exact model - think it is a panasonic monitor). I will try your test as well, but I think that if I can't get the DVDs to work the way they want them then they are going to get the post house that made the 50i masters to make the PAL DVDs for them as well. They would rather not do this as all I am told is it is expensive, so they would rather not. If it comes to it, and it might based on our deadline, then they will go that route if they feel forced to.
Thanks to all three of you for the suggestions.

  • No 1x burning with Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A

My 2.7 GHz/Dual Power Mac G5 comes with the Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. I am unable to burn a DVD at 1x. Why would I want to burn at 1x you ask? At lot of DVD Players will only recognize 1x and 2x burned disks. We have the ridiculous situation of having to create DVD's with the Dual G5 and then transferring our creation to an 800 MHz iMac in order to burn at 1x so that people don't return the DVD's. My daughter recently had her PowerBook fixed by Apple. I noticed that part of the fix was installing a Matshita DVD-R UJ-825. That drive is also able to burn at 1x speed. Is it that this Sony model is "speed challanged" or is it just a problem with my drive?
I don't even know if buying 1x and 2x media is a solution with this particular drive. I have also read that there might be a firmware upgrade available for it. Unfortunately, from the directions I read, I would need to remove the drive and use an external USB connection with Virtual PC or install it on a PC and flash there. Are there no other solutions?

    PowerPC G5/Dual 2.7 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.1)

There is no official Apple firmware update for your
drive - using non-Apple firmware will void your
    drive's warranty.
Regarding your trying to burn 1x: Try another brand
of DVDs and make sure that their speed rating
    includes 1x
The same brand I used to burn on the laptop at 1x was used on the G5. It just seems that the Sony drive is "too stupid" (okay tha'ts not a technical term - lol) to listen to Toast when I request a 1x burn. On the Powebook with the non-Sony drive when I tell the software to burn the disk at 1x, it does, taking over 40 minutes. The blank DVD's I'm using are Verbatim 16x that are rated "up to 16x".
Just to make it even more clear, I have no problems burning 16x discs using the Sony drive. They are readable when used on my computer and on very modern DVD players that have DVD drive transports originally designed for PCs. They just won't play, for instance, on my Sony DVP-S500D which is a much older machine. When I burn at 1x on the iMac or Powerbook it plays fine on the S500D.
At the end of the day, if the drive won't burn at 1x what's the difference if Apple voids the warranty on a drive that can't be used for the purpose for which it was intended -- namely the creation of DVD's that will play to a wide range of DVD players.

    Hello anyone/everyone!
I need some help, I'm trying to burn a file using the disk utility. Only thing is that the disk utility wants to used the drive installed on my iBook (combo drive) and not my external DVD drive! I couldn't find a way to be able to chnage the default burner, and I was hoping that someone/anyone could help me out? The file is too large for a regular 800mb disk so I have to use the external dvd burner. Help me please oh wise-ones?!

Find out if the external burner is Patchburn compatible. If it is, then apply it from http://www.patchburn.de/
If not, I'd sell the external burner and get one that is compatible like those from http://www.macsales.com/

  • Using OneStep DVD with a HDD Camera

I am a relatively new mac user (4 months) but i've navigated my way around pretty well and have used all the ilife software as well as final cut express and some other things with much delight. But I have a wife and have a 1 year old baby. The wife is intelligent but would rather not spend time editing video etc.. but would rather take our files directly off the camera and burn them to dvd.. So i noticed the onestep dvd process which would be perfect if we had a firewire type camera.. But we don't. We also don't have firewire on our new macbook. Hence the reason we bought a HDD camera that does AVCHD. Just wondering if anyone knows if iDVD could use a HDD camera with a quick process such as OneStep DVD.
    thanks
    Steve

Too late to edit my reply so I'll add this here .....
The only way I can think of to accomplish your wife's objective is with a FW minidv camcorder (example pictured below) and a Dvd Recorder with a FW input like this one (Daewoo DVR07):
The advantage in this is that all is done in real time (as opposed to waiting for iDvd to capture and encode a one step dvd) and includes a basic menu and interval chapters if you wish (not to mention the ability to record in sessions as opposed to write at once only thru iDvd).
Btw ... iDvd's One Step can actually take longer than using the traditional approach of iMovie => iDvd (just so you are aware).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Burning footage to DVD with Chapters using FCPX

I have created some footage using FCPX and now want to burn it to DVD. As the footage is long I want to include a menu with chaptures to allow me me to go sytreight to a certai  part i.e. scene selection.
When I select the DVD in the share menu it only appears to allow me to burn the footage and not include chaptures.
    How do I do it

If you choose Compressor, it'll cost you $49 from the Mac App store unless you already have it. The DVD subsequently burned by Compressor will have a basic menu that you have limited control over but the process to a finished DVD has few steps.
If you choose iDVD, it's free. (disclaimer: I don't know for sure if iDVD is still included on new Macs. If it isn't and that's what you have, could be a bit of trouble trying to get a copy). iDVD has a large collection of themes you can use to author a DVD and you can customize it fairly well. iDVD will recompress any video you give it so you can just export the full movie out of FCP X without compressing it first (Share->Export Media command)
    I haven't used "Burn".

  • Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E?

Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E? I'm trying to burn a DVD using iDVD on my iBook. The blank DVD's are Memorex 16x (I've used Memorex 8x successfully in the past), the DVD drive is specified above. The finder tells me that the drive has reported an error "sense key=medium error/ sense code=0x73, 0x03" I couldn't find firmware updates in either Panasonic Matshita or Apple websites. Am I forever confined to 8x DVD-R's with this laptop?

    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    First, welcome to the discussions.
Sorry, No Firmware update to allow you to burn at 16X.
The drive you have is only capable of burning at 8X.
You will also find that for the most part when you recieve errors that it is more often than not attributed to MEDIA.
There are so many problems with the cheaper media they are to numerous to cover.
DVD is not at all like CD burning, in that the technology as well as the Optical Drives used, seem to be touchy, and require the use of good Media. This will allow you trouble free burning without errors.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You will also find that the reason that DVD-R Media works the best, is because it is the most wirely used and recognised in both Computers and Players.
If I may suggest. There are several 16X DVD's on the market.
Take your time and look at the back of the Jewel Cases and read. You will see that the better Media will tell you that it will burn at 1X through and including 16X, if your drive is capable of handleing these speeds. I prefer Maxell 16X DVD-R Media in the individual Jewel Cases. This Media burns at the slower speeds on the older Superdrives that will only burn at 1X or 2X.
Like many others I have learned my lessons the hard way.
    Cheers Don

  • I have been having trouble burning a DVD.

I have been having trouble burning a DVD.  It goes through all the steps until it gets to the multiplexing "burn" step and then with 3 minutes left the disk pops out.  The disk is left empty and an error comes up.  I have been able to burn DVD's before, so this is frustrating.

Well - not correct answer as I understands it - This is a very complex question. In my case I'de put a button just touching the TV-Safe area boarder. Moving it a minute inside and the Error disappeared.
BUT - there are so many other things that I collected a long long list on this - read and see if You find help here.
    Multiplexing Error
    PART One.
Use of strange video/audio material eg .avi, .wmv, .mp3 etc.
    I only use.
Video - StreamingDV (miniDV tape via FireWire) and
Audio = .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else coverted to this .aff 48KHz)
    Chapters !
    A.    Using strange letters in video project name eg +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name eg +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
    • Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)
Important when from iMovie HD6 or previous - Now also observed when using FCE 4
    PART Two.

I always makes a DiskImage first and test this so that it runs OK
I use only - Verbatim DVDs
    I use only - DVD-R
I burn at an as slow speed possibly eg x1
    This gives good DVDs
    PART Three.

    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.
    2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutly needed.
eg external USB/USB2 hard disks, other FW hard disks etc.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing widescreen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.
    by dheb0422
Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the uneditited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    *One user more writes*
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous trys, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no mulitplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 secs beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplexer Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.

  • I have an '09 15" mac book pro running os x mavericks and I'm having trouble burning a dvd.

I have an '09 15" mac book pro running os x mavericks and I'm having trouble burning a dvd. In iMovie, I sent my movie to file and then to iDVD to burn a copy. It was saved in Documents. When I went to iDVD, the thumbnail image of the movie to be burned was faded and inoperable. What's going on now?

Did you export the movie out of iMovie as 480p?  Next just drag the movie from the Documents folder into the iDVD menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Lastly follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
