Trouble capturing HDV with Firewire Basic easy set up

I recently updated Final Cut and have since been unable to load HDV media
via firewire using a Canon XH-A1. I am only gettng small fragments at a time
and capture window reads (searching for media) most of the time during capture.
Previously, I had no problem . Still able to load via Kona card with Betacam in standard def, etc.
Any suggestions?

A)Still this could remain a Canon camera's timecode implementation issue.
B) Or caused by recent QT updates if you did.
But...
C) Just out of curiosity,
do you have external devices like an external drive connected to your computer when your Canon is connected?
If so, unplug everything from your FW bus but the camera's FW cable.
Any improvements?

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).

  • Can't capture HDV with Canon Legria hv40

    Hi,
I'm having this very irritating problem - when I try to capture HDV(25) footage with Premiere Pro CS6 the program:
    recognizes the camera
    has control over camera navigation
doesn't show preview in the capture window
says it's capturing, but only captures audio from the camera (in mp3)
I'm using FireWire and all the Premiere/camera settings are set to HDV.
I can't figure out what the problem might be here.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I originally had this problem with a  #trial version of CS5.5 and it did exactly what you describe, (incidentally Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 @ $75 USD, captures perfectly) ,but, on going to full version and upgrade to CS5.5.2 it has been working perfectly for the last 18 months. (It won't help you but, HDV Canon Capture in Premiere Pro 1.5.1. and that is 5+years old was/is very efficient)
And later as well, just double check New Sequence > Presets > HDV 1080i 25 (50) or other .
Click on Preset Descriptions it will show what it is doing.
    Good luck
#Ps. This occurred in a downloaded trial version (Adobe may not have included the HDV/mpeg-2 codec or it may have been corrupted), but, there is no problem here on 2 x i7 64 bit computers running the program from disc.

  • Trying to capture HDV with a Canon HV30    CS4

I am new to this HD video.Im trying to capture to PPRO cs4 and not sure what settings to use. When I first start out I have my new project set to HDV after that it takes me to new sequence panel there I have selected the preset HDV 1080p30 (Im hoping this is correct) after this I go to the capture panel there I select where to put the video and I also select HDV.When I try to capture the video does not show on the PPRO preview screen but it does capture the video and run the camera from there. The camera is set to HDV output and while its capturing it shows a fire wire symbol on the camera screen and says something like HDV out
Just like to know if Im doing everything correct.'
    Thanks for your time

Had you read the manual or help file on capturing HDV, you would have seen that there is no preview during capture with HDV material. I suggest you read the manual from front to cover to get acquainted with this program and watch tutorials. It will make your editing experience much nicer.

  • Capturing HDV through Firewire

It seems in my Audio/Video settings that I have 2 Capture Preset options. The first is simply 'HDV' and the second is 'HDV Apple Intermediate Codec'.
If you're capturing HDV please share which you prefer. I'm trying to capture 1080i HDV footage.
I searched on the subject here and it didn't give me great results. I also searched the manual .PDF file which only turned out 1 result, explaining no details about it's features.
    Thanks
    Monty

HDV is for capturing the footage (via firewire) to its native HDV codec.
HDV Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) is for capturing the HDV footage (via firewire) to the Apple Intermediate Codec.
with FCP6.0.2 you can also capture HDV footage (via firewire) to Apple's ProRes codec.
HDV is a heavily compressed MPEG format which means the the data rate is quite low ... the same as DV in fact. Low data rates mean your disc can store more of the footage and it can handle more concurrent streams of that footage, however the down side is that the algorithm for this compression format is complex and consequently very taxing for the computer to manipulate when editing. Not every frame of video is encoded in its entirity, only I-frames, all other frames are stored as predictive data describing how these subsequent frames change as compared to previous of forthcoming I-frames. Its a processor intesive operation editing with this format and that impacts you most when rendering effects and treatments etc as those renders will take longer to process. All that said and done, you shouldn't be unecessarily alarmed, this is all pretty run of the mill for todays computers.
AIC is an "intermediate" codec meaning it is not intended as an acquisition format nor a delivery format, but just as an interim working format ... selecting this means your incoming HDV footage will be transcoded to this intermidate codec as it is captured. AIC is a codec which stores all the data for each frame individually, thereby bypassing those processor heavy calculation caused by the HDV codec, as a consequence there is much more data to be handled so the file sizes are necessarily bigger and your hard disc will need to be able to keep up with the extra data rate needed, especially for multiple concurrent streams.
ProRes, as with AIC, is an intermediate codec. It is considered to offer higher quality than AIC.
It worth noting that when outputting back to HDV tape via firewire, regardless of your edit codec, there is a long render process known as "conforming" which you need to perform first. The conform process re-encodes your edit master to a single media file which conforms to the HDV data stream format.

  • Unable to Capture HDTV with Firewire

I would like to use the Firewire out capability of my LG HDTV and record video into the computer.
I've connected the G5 and tried using iRecord 0.4 and VirtualDVHS. The TV recognizes the 1394 connection and will often tell me it is transfering data, but no application has received any video. The time counter will increment, but the destination file stays at zero size.
I've downloaded FireWireSDK21 and looked over the applications and some of the source code. Wow, there is a lot to learn to figure out what is going on here.
I've wondered if buying QuickTime Pro will help, I only hesitate to do this because in the past, as soon as I buy Pro, a new QuickTime comes out and I have to do it agian. I'll buy it if it will help. So, Will it help to have QuickTime Pro?
I am also looking at some of AVCVideo applications in the SDK and wonder of these might be closer to what I want to work with. So, With Firewire, how specific are devices, i.e. do I want the G5 to look like a DVR or something else?
Finally, iMovie seems to expect to see a camera and the video from the TV does not seem to look like a camera (iMovie tells me no camera is connected). Is there a plug in or tool to trick iMovie or add capability to it to act as a DVR? I've downloaded FireWireSDK21 and looked over the applications and some of the source code. Wow, there is a lot to learn to figure out what is going on here.
Thanks! This was posted in another forum for a few weeks with no repsonses, this is the last chance.

    Vidi didn't work.
The TV Firewire and Vidi had no compatible modes.
I suspect that iRecord and VirtualDVHS offer the same capability. There is some setting on the Firewire stream that is compatible with none of these programs. Still looking for a solution.
    Thanks.

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • Trouble networking/sharing with firewire

this is my first day with my new computer and i'm trying to network via firewire to my old G3 CRT(indigo). i can get it to boot up as target, but when i use the new computer to try to access the files, all i get is the rolling colored wheel for hours on end. the old mac hard drive shows on my desktop, but i can't access anything. i've turned on file sharing but other than that, i have no idea what else to do. the older computer is running 9.2.2 and also running 10.2.8. i have tried it with the old computer booted in each OS without any luck. anyone have any ideas what i'm doing wrong?? they swore to me when i bought this new computer that this would work, and i really need it to. i have WAY too much money tied up in apps that i need on my new computer. i'm afraid i'm finding out why i waited this long to upgrade!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Your profile indicates you have an iMac G5 with OS X 10.4.2, but you are posting in the discussion area for the iMac Intel, whose OS X can be no lower than 10.4.4. If you have the iMac Intel, have you verified that all the applications that you are expecting to move from your old iMac will actually work on the new machine? If you are instead moving them to a new iMac G5, they will.
File sharing should be turned on in both computers to set up a network between the two. If you are using Firewire Target Disk Mode, simply double click the icon for the old iMac's hard drive to open it, and move whatever files you want to the proper location in the new iMac's hard drive. Tiger is different from Jaguar, so first read up on Tiger and to what location you should be moving things.
FYI, there is no Classic folder (OS 9) possible on the iMac Intel.

  • Does Adobe Elements 13 video capture work with Firewire for DV videotapes?

I just spent $120 to upgrade to Premiere Elements 13, and it doesn't recognize my Sony DV tape recorder/player.  I was searching on the web and thought I saw somewhere that Premiere Elements 13 dropped firewire support, but I can't relocate the information. • Trouble Capturing Packets with Embedded Packet Capture

    Hi All,
I am trying to capture packets originating from a server to a host device across three switches:
    server -- 6513 -- 3850 -- 3550 -- host A
I am doing a ping from the server to host A. The packet capture is being done on the 3850. This is my configuration:
    access-list 100 permit icmp host 192.168.101.6 host 192.168.100.188
    access-list 100 permit icmp host 192.168.100.188 host 192.168.101.6

monitor capture buffer TRACE filter access-list 100
monitor capture point ip cef CAP g1/1/1 both
montior capture point associate CAP TRACE
    monitor capture point start CAP
I then issue a ping from the server to host A. Interface g1/1/1 is where the 6513 connects to the 3850. When I issue a show monitor capture buffer all parameters, there are no packets. If I remove the filter from the buffer I still do not see the packets.
Does anyone have any advice here?

I tried recreating the packet capture with no access-list filtering.

  • Monitoring and previewing audio while capturing HDV

I have seen this discussion in the thread but there is no solution.
When capturing HDV via firewire, the audio is being previewed. This didn't used to happen. Is there a way to turn this off so that I can use other programs with sound like itunes? I can't find any way of doing this.
    Any solution?

so that I can use other programs with sound like itunes..
Buy another computer and use that for iTunes. Seriously.
If you start dedicating CPU cycles and RAM to listening to music while capturing, you are asking for trouble. Dropped frames, glitches, messed up files (pick one or more)
Yes, there is another way -uncheck the audio preview button.

  • Firewire vs Firewire Basic?

I use FCP 4.5 and am looking for a new miniDV camcorder.
Canons and others are only compatible with "Firewire Basic," while Sonys are full "Firewire."
What does this mean and is it important for things such as black and coding tapes using FCP, recording from FCP to the camcorder, batch capturing and . . .?
    Thanks
    G4 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5 (HD)

Firewire basic is a subset (reduced instruction set) of firewire. You should not notice any practical difference in operation. More to the point, you need to make sure your camera will play nice with any other devices on your firewire chain. This is where Canon devices seem to have their greatest problem.
The way around this problem (if you have external firewire drives) is to install a firewire card to add a second firewire bus to your machine - PCI for a Powermac and PCMCIA for the Powerbook. All firewire ports on a Mac are on the same bus - FW400 & 800. iMacs etc are not recommended simply because adding a second firewire bus is not possible.
re: blacking tapes. I run the first minute or so of tape with bars and tone before use so I have a time running from the very beginning. Once ready to shoot, I have adequate handle for capturing.
There was a very compelling article around discussing the problems of using blacked tapes in a DV camera. The short version is it is no guarantee the timecode will be continuous and you run the tape twice through the heads for no good reason.
    Cheers,

  • Capture HDV without Final Cut?

I am on a shoot in a country that is known for confiscating tapes. Therefore, I need to have a backup of everything I shoot. Unfortunately, my plan of using a Firestore FS-4 failed when it broke 4 days into my shoot. My Mac does not have Final Cut on it and I can't find a way to download it. Is there any way to capture HDV with a program other than Final Cut?

    Sorry no.
I am surprised when you say iMovie captures at 1/8 speed.
I haven't tried it with AIC but I have tested FCE and my iMac was able to capture in realtime.
I can't see why iMovie should be so slow. Even if you have a very old, slow computer it shouldn't take more than 30% longer than realtime.
Have you been using iMovie 08? The much more "professional" iMovie 06 can be downloaded free here:-
