Trouble capturing

Hello,
Today I'm having issues with capturing video. I log my footage, place it in a bin and go to batch capture and the capture screen is cancelled and an error message comes up reading " insufficient disk space in capture scratch". Does anyone know what this means??? My hard drive has over 40 GB on it so this just doesn't make any sense...
Thanks for your time...

I am having trouble capturing media in fc express as well as imovie. my footage is HD. when I start to capture the media goes in normal for like 2 seconds, then it says that the capture is 95% behind(in fc express) or that it is capturing at 1/8 speed (imovie). even when i stop the capture in order to let it catch up to real time, the media freezes up so that i cant really view it. i dnt know what i am missing.Ive even tried to use a different firewire cable. any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply Tom. (BTW I'm not the original poster.)
You are correct- It is a USB drive formatted FAT 32 . After my original post, I erased the drive and started over with a clean slate. This was successful for tape one (about 60 minutes). About twenty minutes into tape two though, it was deja vu all over again. FC froze, I force quit, and lost all of what I had captured from tape one in the process. I unsuccessfully tried to recapture tape one. Same problem again.
Although this is the first time I've tried to capture through FC onto an external drive, I've got three other USB drives full of video I've captured from VHS with the same computer through a DV encoder. When you say USB is not supported by Apple for video applications, does that mean video editing applications? As for complete information, apologies but I'm not exactly sure what other info. you mean. Please let me know. Thanks again. I appreciate the time.

  • Trouble capturing HD media ...

I am having trouble capturing HD media from my Sony HVR-Z1E! Three months previous I had captured 18 hours of HD media with no problems. Presently when trying to capture FCE engages the camera into play but the capture preview window remains black with the message “cueing tape”. The tape keeps playing but nothing else happens.
    Any ideas?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I've gotten this suggestion from a lot of different places, but it doesn't help me if I ever delete my captured footage and then need to reedit. If I go the "Capture Now" route will the program remember where the clips belong in my timeline or can I expect to have to start from scratch if I ever delete my footage (which is likely, since HDV takes up quite a bit of space)?
Also any suggestions on how to avoid a non "I" frame? Sometimes all it takes is for me sitting there telling it to capture again and again before it finally sticks.

  • FCE4 im having trouble capturing

im having a lot of trouble capturing my footage from a miniDv using the firewire.
my laptop isnt noticing the camera attached to it and therefore i cant capture anything.
I know this is vague but i use this software at college but i have had nothing but trouble with it since i bought it.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.

  • Trouble Capturing with my Sony FX1000

I cannot get my Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 to recognize my Sony FX1000 camera. I am familiar with most FCP settings, and I never had any trouble with any other camera, but for some reason now that I have switched my equipment to HD I can no longer capture. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I shoot 1080i on MiniDV. All of my standard definition works just fine... but for some reason I simply cannot get my HD equipment to work. Every time I try to capture, a window pops up saying," Unable to initialize video deck."
my sequence preset is set to DVCPRO-HD - 1080i60
my capture preset is set to DVCPOR HD - 1080i60 48kHz

  • Trouble Capturing from Canon Optura 20

For the past few days I've had trouble getting FCP to capture from my camera. It is picking up the camera and I am able to control it (play, stop, rewind) from the computer. I set the in and out point to capture and it starts but only gets a few seconds before it says something is wrong with my camera or tape. I've tried capture now, capturing a clip and batch capture. iMovie will capture but the imported DV files from there don't work quite as well in FCP. It has all worked before so I'm sure its fixable. Any help will be much appreciated. THANKS!!!

sounds like either a firewire bus or a quicktime issue issue.
If it has worked before and does not now, have you either added new external drives or upgraded your FCP/Quicktime installation?
new external drives: Try removing the drives and capture to an internal hard drive. Does it work? if so, you have a firewire bus collision issue.
upgraded FCP/Quicktime: Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Trouble capturing to xserve raid

    Hey,
I'm having serious issues capturing from my Dual 2 Ghz G5 with 3.25gb RAM (running os 10.3.9) to my apple xserve raid.
My raid is striped as raid0 and is connected by fibre channel to another G5 running os 10.4 server software. Capturing from this G5 works perfectly, but when I try and capture from my other G5, which is connected to the G5 with server software via a gigabit ethernet cable, I encounter numerous dropped frames.
I have tried everything I can think of to get this working, but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Am I wrong in thinking that I can capture DV to an xserve raid across a gigabit ethernet? If so, what would I need to do to solve the problem?
Sorry if I've been abit vague or if I've not supplied as much info as needed. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to add!!
Thanks in advance for any help given.
    Cheers
    Adam

Thanks for your post - I know its been a while responding, but it seems to be one thing after an other at the moment!
Right, for a time, your suggestion worked! We started capturing to our local drives, then transferring the media across. Render files and project files were also saved on the raid. Generally our workflow was very good - but not perfect!
Then I realised that one of the macs that is connected to the network isn't gigabit, which, from my understanding, means that all the other macs would be limited to 110mbs instead of 100 - Do you know if I am correct with this assumption?
Anyway, it hasn't caused us major issues and because of how busy we've been we haven't really had a chance to test the theory and/or reslove it.
Anyway, my boss then kindly went out and bought me a G5 Quad, which was also added to the network and then we upgraded to FCP5 on every computer - now we are having no end of trouble working across the network. When we capture locally, move it across and then play it back the footage is constantly freezing, especially on the Quad!
People keep telling me that you can't use dv across a gigabit network, but surely this can't be the case.
There must be something I'm doing wrong? if it the 10mbs issue I mentioned, or do I simply need to go spend alot of money upgrading every mac to fibre channel? Even if I did this, would it definately solve all our problems?
    Pleae, please, please help!!!

  • Trouble capturing just audio from beta tapes

Hello, I am trying to capture some audio-only beta tapes and having trouble. The deck is all hooked up correctly (deck to IO box to mac), and I followed the manual instructions on how to create an audio only capture setting. When I go to capture the audio, I can hear the audio playing and it says "now capturing", but when it stops I get an error saying "Final cut was unable to read the movie file just captured." Is anyone familiar with this kind of problem? Let me know if you need anymore information about my settings (unfortunately I am relatively new to final cut).
    Thanks,
    Mike

Try this (no guarantees but it used to work): Go into your scratch disk settings and enable "capture video and audio to separate files." Wasn't consistently a problem, but when it was, this solved it. But I used to get the error when tried to initiate the audio only capture. Be sure and turn this off before you capture video and audio.
Also, what happens if you try and capture video and audio of the same section? You can always just export the audio and then delete the capture.

  • Trouble capturing problematic mini dv cassette

I have received a panasonic super mini dv in the mail that i need to capture in final cut pro for a project.
When i play the tape on my deck the image is boxy. the deck has trouble reading it...it shows an image but blurry and it looks almost like boxes are all within the image...I tried to play it on my canon xl2, but the same thing happened. i normally use panasonic mini dvs with no problem...but they are not super mini dvs...is this the problem? or is the tape just damaged? or am i do something else wrong?
    please help
    thank you

No, no need to push the PMU button... I'd only do this if it was every tape...
The dub might help... it's just a matter of having a deck/camera to play back the original, then set another deck/camera to record it in the SP mode. If it is the LP mode this will help... I'd suggest you get the same camera that shot the tape if you can for the source machine.
If it was recorded in Israel, it's likely a PAL recording. try capturing it as PAL. I'd see if I can make a dub somewhere...?

  • FCE having trouble capturing

When i am capturing a video off a tape via firewire. final cut always stops at the same spot stating "capture encoutered a problem reading the data on your source tape...." and so on. I have a samsung scd107. my firewire hard drive is connected to my computer and my camcorder is daisy chained to it. can you guys help me out? the camera isn't even recognized in imovie ...
    thanks.
    tyler

iMovie and FCE have little in common and FCE uses QuickTime files that carry timecode. That's probably why iMovie seems to work.
The FCE Easy Setup sounds OK.
I suspect a tape problem because it is repeatable on the same spot. Whether the tape is physically damaged or it's simply non-contiguous timecode.
Timecode is a bunch of numbers that look like this: 00:25:12:01. This example read from right to left says, frame 1, second 12, minute 25, 0 hours.
The timecode counts like a clock and a break in it's continuos counting will upset capture.
You can see the timecode displayed on the camera if in the correct menu setting. Refer to camera manual.
Watch the footage on the camera to check if there is a break on that trouble spot. Maybe even lift the protective flap on the cassette housing to inspect for damage.
BTW: If tape is recorded, erased and recorded again for more than three or four cycles problems can quickly creep in.

  • Trouble capturing using XL 2

I am trying to capture using a Canon XL 2. I've tried using two different 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cables. I've even tried two different XL 2s. Not only do Final Cut and iMovie not recognize it, but under the "about mac" firewire section, it doesn't show anything being connected. I've tried it with the camera stopped, playing and even off (just to try it) and still nothing. I think the settings are right, but do anyone have any suggestions?

    1)  Make sure that the camera is the only device on the FW bus. If you were planning to capture to an external, you may need to capture to your internal drive first, then move the footage to an external for editing. Canon cameras are know to be finicky on the FW bus.
    2)  Are you using a 9pin to 4pin cable or  a 6pin to 4pin with an adaptor? There has been some anecdotal reports that using adaptors, as opposed to fixed cables can cause problems.
    3) When ever you FW troubles, disconnect everything. Turn everything completely off for 5 - 10 minutes. Reconnect and turn on the camera. Now turn on the computer. Not only can the computer FW get jammed up, the device itself can get jammed up as well.
    4) Trash your FCE preferences, espcially if you have been making lots of Easy Set Up or Capture Settings changes with the device attached.
You can download Preference Manager (free) from Digital Rebellion to do this for you:

  • Trouble Capturing Buddy Picture

I'm having trouble using iChat to capture a buddy picture on my 24" iMac.
I click on my existing photo, choose "Edit Picture...", press the camera icon, pose, watch the countdown and the photo flash, but no picture materializes.
    Any thoughts?
    Mark

    Hi,
If you click on your Own Video icon do you get a Preview ?
If you go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video/Audio Section can you see your preview ?
With the first of these can you use the Video Menu "Take Snapshot" option ?
This should end up on the Desktop (Video Snapshot.jpeg) (it maybe numbered if you do several)
Also check in your Home Folder/Library/Images/iChat Recent Pictures (this is where they are supposed to be put from the method you are using).
Using your Start Method can you actually chose a pic that already exists from somewhere else on your Hard Drive ?
(You can not look in the iPhoto library by this method so it will have to be a loose pic).
EDIT:- Please note my Time zone and personal Post time as I may not get back tonight (my time) to a further reply.

  • Trouble capturing waveform from PXI-4472

I'm really a very green newbie at this stuff, so bear with me...
I've got a PXI-4472 data acquisition board and a PXI-5411 waveform generator. I've connected the arbitrary out of the 5411 to the channel 0 in on the 4472. An external oscilloscope shows a 1v-amplitude sine wave being generated.
I created a very simple VI to show what the 4472 is capturing. It connects a NI-DAQ channel I generated to the standard "AI Acquire Waveform.vi", then out to a Waveform Chart, all within a while loop with a Stop button. Problem is, all the waveform chart seems to be showing is the running average of the waveform instead of the form itself (solid line, a tad above zero).
I can hook the 4472 input channel up to a DC-out power supply, a
nd when I vary the voltage, the waveform chart changes as well.
So my question (whew!): What's wrong here that's not allowing me to capture a waveform from the 4472 (in turn from the 5411) and display it on my waveform chart?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Never mind.... it was a sample rate problem. I upped the sample rate and it came out ok.

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • Trouble capturing video from VHS via Analogue to DV converter

I use Final Cut Express 1.0.1 and I've always been able to capture video from VHS via a Director's Cut analogue to DV converter box. Today it keeps freezing on me. I've tried force quit, logged off and back on again and even re-started the computer. I've got plenty of space on my two hard drives (125GB free on main drive and 85.42GB on my scratch disk).
I'm sure I've set the rest up correctly (composite cable from VHS to DV convertor box set to output and connected to input slots on box, and DV box set to capture). The box is correctly connected to the Mac.
I've also logged on using another user's account to see if the same problem occurs, and it does. I believe this means that dumping the my preference file won't help, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas how to stop this freezing on me would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Karen

Last bit of help from Martin may have some mileage in it as far as excluding hidden problems with the drive you are capturing too.
Have been reading into the requirements for the hard disc and it does make it clear having a separate one like you have is almost a requirement because of the work it does. Would it be worth trying a small capture to your system disc. If it helps that is how I am working at the moment so it doesn't appear to be instant fireworks if you do use this one but give it some thought first...
On the firewire port side of things I have seen some unexplained connection issues on this front which were cured by shutting things down, unplugging and then beginning again. Take it System Profile didn't yield anything?
Now I got back in front of my Mac it appears Quicktime Pro will allow capture from an attached device but appreciate you may not have the Pro bit, iMovie should be as good a test.
    Nick.

    Hi
My table for this was once for iMovie - BUT it's more General than that so You might find help here.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.
