Trouble compressing with Chapter Markers

I have a very large (136 gigs) 10 bit uncompressed quicktime of a 17 minute movie. Knowing that DVD Studio Pro will only let me place chapter markers on I frames, I brought my quicktime into final cut and placed 5 chapter markers exactly where I want them. I've now tried to export that quicktime with DVD Studio Pro markers and then compress into an MPEG-2 in Compressor. I've also exported with chapter markers and then compressed into an MPEG-2. I've also tried sending my sequence straight to Compressor and, using one of the tabs, "maintained DVD Studio Pro meta-data." No matter what, every time that I bring my final compressed MPEG-2 into DVD Studio Pro, the chapter markers do not appear. Any thoughts? Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Boards
When you open the movie in QuickTime are you seeing the markers? Have you tired using Export -> Chapter Markers (not DVD SP Markers?)
Take a look here shows selection of Chapter Markers on export

Also is a basic cheat when markers are causing issues...

  • Missing with chapter markers after Export Using QuickTime Conversion

I have my FCE workflow setup as follows:
I create the sequences using relatively large video source files, in Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).
Then, I use Export -> Using QuickTime Conversion to H.264 Codec, but my chapter markers are lost.
If I use Export -> QuickTime Movie, the chapter markers are preserved, but the codec is still AIC.
I need a compressed file with chapter markers. What am I missing?

One more time: "Where are you looking at the exported file? After making a DVD or somewhere else?"
Can you answer this for me? How are you looking at this material? Off the DVD you've burned? Is that what you're saying? Comparing the QuickTime Movie export to a DVD burned from a PhotoJPEG export? Or are you playing it from the computer to HDMI? If so are you using the QuickTime player? Is the QT player set to high quality playback? Yes, PhotoJPEG (not JPEG Photo) is a very large file especially at full quality. You probably don't need any more than 75% quality. I'd be very surprised if you say you can see the difference between 75% and 100%.
The length of the video is important not the size of the disc. iDVD's compression is fixed by the length of movie and the amount of content that has to be encoded.

  • Problems with rendering a 16:9 project with Chapter markers to iDVD

    Hi there
I'm having an issue where I'm trying to export a DVD for a client with chapter markers as it's required. Problem is when I put the project into iDVD the project squishes back to 4:3 ratio.
One solution that was on here was to use the Quicktime Conversion to create a 16:9 video however when I use Quicktime conversion I lose the chapter markers
I need to have both 16:9 ratio and Chapter Markers in the DVD how do I overcome this problem?

    Anamorphicizer didn't work.
I can use Quicktime Pro cause I currently have Quicktime X on my computer (snow leopard) which doesn't have a Pro upgrade.
Any myDVDedit is really confusing to use do I have to export the DVD into a VIDEO_TS file to fix it? I'm still puzzled

  • Using iMovie to Make a DVD with Chapter Markers

    All,
Can someone explain the shortcomings of the following workflow to create a simple DVD with chapter markers?
    1. Create each "chapter" as a separate project in FCP X.
    2. Export each project using "Export project as QuickTime movie using current settings".
    3. Import each QT movie into iMovie and place them into a single timeline in the desired order.
    4. Add chapter markers at the start of each clip.
    5. Choose Share>iDVD from within iMovie.
    6. Choose desired templates, etc. then burn the DVD.
I have used this workflow successfully but want to make the best quality DVD possible and am concerned that I am making compromises with this method.
    Thanks for your help.
    Peter

As long as you aren't "optimizing" the movie when importing into iMovie, I think you aren't doing anything to degrade quality prior to sharing with iDVD.
I've read on other threads that you can add chapter markers using garage band. you might give that a try, as it would let you use just one project and would save you time if you have a lot of chapters. Export the same way from FCPX (quicktime, use current project settings) but open in Garage Band instead. Place chapter markers, then share to iDVD.
but want to make the best quality DVD possible
You should know weak link in your workflow regarding quality is iDVD, because you have extremely little access the settings that actually control quality. iDVD might end up creating an excellent quality DVD, but without knowledge of bitrate and whether it is VBR multipass vs CBR, you can't be sure.
Unfortunately, there is really no low cost option I know of (other than iDVD) on the Mac for creating "the best quality DVD possible" that also gives you flexible authoring tools (e.g., templates, menus, etc).

  • Exporting QT with Chapter markers for iDVD

When I export a QT with Chapter markers for iDVD I get one movie file then a number of "AV" files - what are these and what do I do with them?
    workflow as follows:
1.Place chapter markers in timeline using mm the Add Chapter Markers
    2. set in/out points in timeline
    3. export quicktime movie
    4. select include Chapter Markers and include audio/video
    5. do NOT select recompress all frames
    6. DO select make self contained movie.
    7. Open exported movie file in Quicktime and chapter markers are present
    8. import ONLY the movie file to iDVD (NOT the AV files?) and answer yes to read all chapter markers
    9. burn seems to work fine but when I playback on DVD player there is digital stuttering in the picture
Any ideas on how to remedy the problem?
    thanks in advance
    patrick

The project is only 75 minutes. Do think it is the codec that iDVD is using that is causing the stutter. I assumed that it always encodes using MPG2.
Any idea what the AV files are?
When I export as an uncompressed DV stream the file is 15 GB.
When I export as uncompressed QT I get one file (movie) at 2.5 GB then
5 more "AV" files that are each 2.5 as well. So when I import the movie file without the AV files am I missing something?
Should I look into DVD Studio Pro? I have version 1.5 but I am fairly unfamiliar with it.

  • Exporting 16:9 with chapter markers to idvd

I have been triyng to export a video in 16:9 with chapter markers but when opened with idvd I can only get either the format or the chapters by using two diferent procedures. Is there any way I can have it in the right format and with the chapter markers? If not, is there any other program, lets say dvd studio pro, that can do it. How should I export them?
Thank you all for your help.

    Hi
Got problem with Chapters too - It was my own fault.
    A. Must Use Chapter Marks - not just only Marks
    B. Must NOT - fiddle with the text in this box set - I thought me to be clever by renaming as I wanted them to be - Result = No Chapter Marks.
Do the re-naming in iDVD - here it's OK and works.
    C. The export over to iDVD Export as
    • EXPORT With Chapter Marks
    • Not self-containing - not important but saves Time and Space
    • QuickTime movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL ! !
    D. This file I import (drop) into a BRAND NEW iDVD Project - Never go back to update as this set's off the iDVD BUG. If error in movie found and need of change - THEN Start a Brand New iDVD project and all will be well.
    (E. Never let iDVD convert from NTCS to PAL or other way around and not feed it 24fps video - as result will be BAD) - If of need - Please come back for instr. on how.

  • IDVD 7 trouble with chapter markers and burning

After importing my iMovie into iDVD, with all the chapter markers working fine, saved fine. When I try and burn, I get the message - "Assets used in your project were changed since you last opened this project". It then asks if I want to update. If I say no - I can't burn it. If I agree to the auto update it screws up all the chapter markers and doesn't seem to let me fix them!
I have one week left to have this completed. I'd so appreciate any suggestions!! Thanks.

That, I am afraid, is 'normal' behaviour.
Chapter markers are screwed up this way, and all we can do is to create a new iDVD project.

  • Burning movies with chapter markers crash iDVD in snow leopard

    Hi Everyone-
When attempting to burn movies that have had chapter markers added in iDVD, my machine will crash during rendering. Removing chapters fixes the problem, but I would like to use that functionality. I've tried the usual fixes (delete plist files, permissions repair, re-install iDVD, re-install snow leopard) with no luck.
    Any advice out there?
    Thanks

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions

  • Import from FCP4 with chapter markers to DSP2

I have read manual of DSP2 and discussions. I could not get chapters appear on DSP track editor. I only see add embedded markers. I could not see import one. Please help. Thanks

I'm currently having the same problem. I have always been able to simply put markers in my FCP4 timeline - compress the movie using compressor mpeg2 and the markers would show up in DVDSP2 -- Now i'm using DVDSP3 and Tiger, still have FCP4. I re-compressed in compressor to mpeg2, marking the markers as CHAPTER MARKERS. still not showing in DVDSP3.
We should NOT have to export as a quicktime then compress to mpeg2. That's what Compressor is for - to eliminate steps. Unless something has changed with DVDSP3 and TIger. I will try George's suggestion and see if it works.

  • Converting NTSC to PAL with chapter markers

    Hey guys,
I have just a quick question.
I am making a home made video. I did all the editing in FCP and made a great DVD in iDVD. I would like to do the same thing in PAL format so I can send it to my parents in Europe. My original footage is in NTSC. I did my own research and tried using compressor to change format to PAL.
I tried several different settings (PAL DV, Mpeg 2 PAL) but the outcome movie is always missing chapter markers.
I also tried to import the PAL movie (after conversion in Compressor) to FCP and added chapter markers but did not work.
Does anybody know how to convert the format from NTSC to PAL and keep the chapter markers at the same time? I would like to mantain as high quality as possible.
    Thanks for your help.

Well, this seemed to work. However, being completely new to converting to PAL, I was surprised to see the "jumpiness" that goes along with the frame rate drop. Looking at it taxes the eyes as it seems like its dropping frames every so often. I realize, through more research that this is due to the 25 FPS nature of PAL plus the fact that I'm converting and not just authoring from PAL material. Having said this, is there a tried and true way of "smoothing" this jumpiness that anyone would share?
A friend of mine suggested that when I place the file into DVDSP, I choose the TOP field in the encoding tab, prior to burning the disk. In the past I have always left the FIELD menu set at Auto. He says that setting it to TOP might help a little.
He also told me that a lot of the software based converters don't do the best of jobs. Although acceptable results may come from tweaking the settings, the best way to convert NTSC to PAL (with the most pleasing results) is by using a very high end converter (not a computer). Although you have to weigh out the circumstances such as how many disks will eventually be converted compared to available budget, is it worth spending a little extra for a master that will ultimately see 1,000 copies?
I'm planning on showing my client the burn with field dominance set to TOP, on Monday. Hopefully she'll find it acceptable and I'll be able to move on with this project. Thanks for all the help!

  • Self-contained QT with Chapter Markers

Hope this is the right forum:
    I use FCE HD
My buddy uses latest versions of FCP and DVD SP.
I have an FCE Project/Movie with Studio Pro Chapter Markers. Can I make this into a self-contained Quicktime Movie, give it to my bud, and can he now drop that into DVD SP and create a DVD with Pro menus and my chapter markers?
    Thanks in advance

    Yes!
Once the QT file has been exported from FCE, you need to turn on the chapter text track of this QT file, so that the chapters show up in DVD SP. You can do this in QT Pro, by loading the QT file and pressing Command + J, then place a check in the text track for the chapter markes and then save/close the QT file before encoding with Compressor.
Once he gets the QT file, (self contained QT file) he needs to use compressor to encode the QT file into a Mpeg2, (.m2v) file. He will also need to encode the audio, (if he is using DVD SP 4.x) into .ac3, using compressor 2. This can all be done in one batch, using Compressor 2.
Once the video and audio are formated into Mpeg2 and AC3, those files can be brought into DVD SP and the DVD authoring process can begin.

  • Imported asset from Compressor with chapter markers- Now what?

I put chapter markers in (Compressor) before submitting in Compressor. I have opened DVDPro and imported the asset which is divided up into 6 chapters. I want each chapter to have a button. I have a template I have chosen with 8 buttons and deleted two of them. How do I activate those buttons according to the chapter breaks? I feel I am close... Thanks!

Thanks. Tried to read the manual but became very confused. I'm recovering from surgery and it's alot to absorb right now and I'm under a deadline- easier to ask a question. For what it's worth, I did read the FC6 manual

  • Quicktime H.264 with chapter markers

I tried encoding a DV25 sequence with Encore/chapter markers to a Quicktime H.264 movie. Upon playback and checking through markers on Quicktime X, the movie keeps jumping to the end of the file rather than at the marker point. Anyone know why this is, and how to remedy it?

The markers actually show up when I playback on Quicktime X. I tried Make Movie again from Premiere to a Quicktime movie with DV25 codec (HUGE file size since it's not H.264), and the markers actually work right. What gives?

  • IOS Client Video Streaming with Chapter Markers

Are there any ios client applications that will receive an h.264 video stream and provide a list of chapter markers for the video?
It seems AVFoundation definitely supports this: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/releasenotes/AudioVideo/RN-AVFoundation-O ld/_index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40011199-CH1-SW6
However, I can't find any client applications out there that seem to support this. I can't even really get a clear answer as to whether or not HTTP Live Streaming for iOS has a feature for providing chapter metadata.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

My most sincere of apologies.  My "instruction redo" for clarity included a cerebral gaseous emission in the one place that was most important.
Step 6 should read "Select "Movie""
    1. Go to iTunes->Home Videos
    2. Right-click the video
    3. Choose "Get Info"
    4. Click the "Options" tab
    5. Click the "Media Kind" pull-down menu
    6. Select "Movie"
    7. Click "Okay"
Fell into that trap where you read something over several times to make sure you got everything correct, but you aren't really looking because you KNOW you got everything right.
Not only that, but I got it wrong the first time as well, although Florbid got it right (for Windows) in spite of my initial blundering.  If you read my first post, I say to select "Video", which was supposed to be "Movie" even then.
Hope this relieves your frustration.  But if it doesn't solve the problem, I have no other answer.
Message was edited by: Clyde Crocker to replace "brain **** " with "cerebral gaseous emission".
